When Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said in late May that gay marriage would cause "significant public harm" and that Florida recognizing same-sex marriages from other states would throw the Sunshine States' marriage laws into utter chaos, her words might have resembled those of many LGBT rights opponents. However, those who agree with Florida’s Attorney General represent a group shrinking in size and influence, and include such bastions of morality as Kansas's Westboro Baptist Church and, internationally, Russian strongman and bigot Vladimir Putin.
Bondi's comments were made in the context of her opposition to a lawsuit in Florida in which numerous plaintiffs have claimed that the state is discriminating against them because of Florida's refusal to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states. Bondi, fellow GOP Governor Rick Scott and some other officials oppose the lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
