MOST COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO EVERYTHING PRIDE The 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride has finally arrived, and I cannot tell you how excited I am. When my fellow Miami Beach Gay Pride Board Members and I set out to create Miami Beach’s first Gay Pride event, little did we know that in less than three years it would grow to attract more than 40,000 attendees, making it the largest single day event for the GLBT community in Miami Beach! Now with the success of Miami Beach Gay Pride, a number of ancillary events have sprung up, providing Pride attendees with a smorgasbord of cocktail and dance parties, cultural and dining events. Beginning Thursday, April 14th until Monday, April 18th, you can celebrate Pride by dancing your ass off to the fabulous beats of international DJs, enjoy some culinary delights courtesy of South Florida’s top chefs, take in a lecture or two, or network at the many VIP cocktail events taking place throughout Miami Beach Gay Pride Weekend.

place to get the inside scoop on the hottest events, dining experiences, and parties!

Every year we dedicate a countless amount of hours to putting together the most comprehensive guide to Miami Beach Gay Pride you can find in South Florida. A number of publications will print the general Pride schedule, but none of them actually include all of the ancillary events that take place during Miami Beach Gay Pride Weekend, which means Wire Magazine is the ONLY

On Friday evening, I will most certainly be hitting up MOVA for its 1st Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Block Party from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. MOVA owner Babak Movahedi is closing Michigan Avenue between Lincoln and 16th Lane and bringing in a state of the art light and sound system to create a kick off event for Pride that is sure to be nothing less than amazing. To

In this week’s issue, you will notice that have dedicated four pages to the various events taking place over the next four days. Think of it as the most Comprehensive Guide to Everything Pride! So sit back, grab a highlighter, and start planning a super-jam packed weekend of Pride fun! Now even with all of the events taking place this weekend, there are a few that I am personally looking forward to the most. Thursday night is going to be the raunchiest night of Pride, as Lady Bunny will take over TWIST, performing for hundreds of Pride revelers. It’s been a while since Miss Bunny has performed in Miami, so you know she has got tons of raunchy little eggs in her basket that she has been saving just for us!

top it off, international DJ sensation Brett Henrichsen will be headlining the event, filling Lincoln Road with his heart pounding beats! Of course, I will spend Saturday taking in the parade, walking the expo, and enjoying a few cocktails at The Palace, where I also plan to check out the performance by the King of Merengue himself, Elvis Crespo on the Latin Stage presented by The Palace. Later that night, I will trade in my walking shoes for my dancing shoes, and head over to Urge at the Ice Palace Studio West. The owners of Score have partnered with Hilton Wolman to produce an incredible dance event, featuring DJs Paolo and Abel. Sunday Brunch is definitely a must, and I can’t think of a better place to do it than at South Beach’s new and only gay hotel, The Lords South Beach. As an official Pride event, you can snag some delicious nibbles poolside, while taking in all the eye candy. Later on in the day, the brunch will transform into a fantastic pool party with free Jello shots, hot boys, and great music! No matter how you plan to spend your Pride weekend, we can guarantee you will certainly find something to do in our Guide to Everything Pride! Happy Pride!

POST MODERN JACKSON PICTURE-PERFECT EXAMPLE OF MEDICINE-BY-GOVERNMENT There is no clear and obvious solution to the problems of Jackson Health System. That’s a rare thing. Generally when it comes to public policy issues, there is a simple solution that will resolve or at least severely diminish a challenge. But those solutions don’t happen because they somehow would limit the influence of the nation’s ruling class and bureaucracy. Consider how easy it would be to simply resolve some of the country’s hardest challenges. Increase the Social Security-retirement age by two to four years; wham, a century to fix the program infrastructure. Provide a tax advantage to private physicians if they give up one off day a month to provide advanced medical care/treatments to patients at public health facilities; and lighten the health care dilemma. It does seem odd that law prohibits doctors from deducting the value of charitable services, which other professions seem to be able to do. Totally fix medicine by permitting health plans be sold cross state lines. Fix overcrowded prisons by decriminalizing marijuana and by deporting the 25 percent of prisoners who are illegal aliens.

The result is a cluster f--k. The problem is not that right-thinking folks who care haven’t brainstormed ideas and offered suggestions for the fundamental structural changes necessary to save Jackson. They have, and the legitimate medical and administrative figures fighting to save the System have been nobly fighting the good fight. Sadly, their pleas have not been heard and change hasn’t been made. Inevitably, as will always be the case when government is involved in medicine, their political masters are only concerned with pandering to the sycophant class and unions, and would just assume raise taxes or find another funding source to continue throwing money at Jackson and kick the can down the road. In the medical field, a public hospital is a place to save lives. In the government field, it is a vehicle through which to control votes and institute social policies. Again, this is akin to schools, where parents envision institutions in which children learn but politicians envision employment agencies for voters and labs for social experimentation.

So, why then is there no obvious fix for Functional public health systems generally Jackson? expend 40 percent of operating expenses Two things stand out. One is that the on labor; Jackson has been at 55 percent. problems have been permitted to compound at Jackson because of it being so entwined with government. In the private sector, problems have to be identified and solved. In a government-controlled organization, you simply gloss over problems by throwing money around and hope that something sticks (witness the failure of public schools). That’s what’s happened at Jackson -- problems were simply allowed to fester and become worse and more and more linked to other problems.

Which leads to the second, most contemporary challenge Jackson faces. Like Shrek, Jackson is a many-layered onion. No one is really in charge, no one is really empowered with the ability to make decisions and then implement them. Any even minor decision made by middle or senior management has to pass political muster. As if having local politicians involved in the administration of the System isn’t bad enough, the state’s fingers are all over things as well.

Jackson is the picture-perfect example of what happens at the intersection of health care and government, like other failed public health systems before it and surely more systems in the future. It would be a shame for Jackson to be closed or diminished to the point of irrelevance. But it’s future is definitely clouded. A miracle could happen and a rare gleam of wisdom could emerge from the bureaucracy. A brave buyer could come along. But with all things health care on the verge of becoming more expensive, more difficult, and more micro-managed by an even larger bureaucracy, it’s hard to imagine a positive long-term solution at Jackson. --Author and journalist Michael W. WIRE FEATURE: CRAIG STEVENS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION @ SIMPLE LIFE THURSDAYS

Whether you’re a news junkie like myself, support a local GLBT organization, or just someone who just enjoys a great party or two, you definitely know South Florida’s most famous primetime news anchor, Craig Stevens. After moving here in the summer of 1992, Craig has experienced quite an amazing career at Fox’s WSVN Channel 7. Working as a TV reporter, Craig climbed the ranks until he finally landed the gig as head anchor on one of South Florida’s most watched news programs. But even with all of his success, one of the things that makes Craig so unique is his dedication to the GLBT community. Throughout his career, he has made it a point to support our community by not only lending his name to various causes; but by also getting his hands dirty and physically volunteering for events like Care Resource’s AIDS Walk. Next Thursday, April 21st from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the fabulous Craig Stevens will celebrate his birthday at Edison Farrow’s Simple Life Thursdays at its new location, Cameo! Drag divas, fashionistas, creatures of the night, and everything in between will come out to wish Craig a very happy birthday, and for good reason! We were able to catch up with Craig to learn more about the man behind the anchor desk. Check out what he had to say: Where are you from? I was born in Massachusetts, but as a child I also lived outside Cleveland, Chicago, and San Francisco. For the most part though, I grew up on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. After so many years though – 20 in fact – Florida is now home. When did you move to Miami? Yikes... I moved to Miami and started at Channel 7 as a reporter in July 1992, a month before hurricane Andrew. You have volunteered and donated a lot of time to various organizations. Which events have been the most fulfilling? It’s tough to pick just one, though I’ve always enjoyed working at schools over the years and helping kids with

an interest in journalism. It’s neat when we work on something, and they “get it!” Over the years, I’ve heard back from people who are now pursuing that career path, and it’s gratifying to know I might have helped them, even just a bit. You have hosted AIDS Walk so many times. Why do you think it is important to support Care Resource? I think it’s important to recognize and support organizations that try to do a lot of good in our own community. Care Resource has spent years doing just that, so to the extent to which I can help, I’m always happy to. How has being a primetime anchor at WSVN helped the causes you care about the most? It’s been helpful in that I have a fairly visible platform, and I’ve found it can be useful when it comes to lending a voice to a cause or an event. I’m fortunate that WSVN over the years has allowed me to get behind causes I care about, and they in turn support my efforts. Do you think it is important to be socially responsible for someone in the spotlight? Absolutely! What good is having a platform like this if you can’t use it to do some good!? Which celebrities have you been most impressed by? Hmmm, Jane Lynch (of Glee fame now) is one... She was an absolute doll. She helped us out with AIDS Walk a few years ago. She was just great to be around and seemed to care about Care Resource and its efforts. Next Thursday, you will be celebrating your birthday with Edison Farrow at Simple Life Thursdays. How did you get connected with Edison? I met him just after he moved here I guess, in the late 90s... we’ve been good friends ever since. He was thoughtful and offered to throw a birthday party. And since I always enjoy a party, how could I say no?! What makes Edison’s events so unique? I think over the years he’s found a way to make an evening fun for people from all walks of life. His events al-

ways seem to offer a little something for everyone. From Jade to Buck15, 721, and now his new night at Cameo, along with a countless number of other places, he knows how to “create” a fun evening! What are you most looking forward to during your birthday celebration? An evening with some of my favorite people... folks I don’t often get to spend a lot of time with. We’ll try to make up for it that one night. What can people expect at your birthday celebration? Some surprises I hope! And fun of course! With the arrival of Miami Beach Gay Pride, what are you most looking forward to? The Beach really comes alive. I love that. It’s great the way people from all over South Florida and other parts of the country come here for it. It’s beginning to rival Pride events in other cities. I have some close friends from New York heading down, so I know we’ll all be enjoying it together. What does Pride mean to you? It’s a terrific opportunity for people to come together, celebrate who we are, and embrace our unique culture here in South Florida and Miami Beach. It’s a great event! Only a few years along, but look at how it’s grown. Look at the turnout. It’s a weekend I always look forward to. What’s in the future for Craig Stevens? Hmmm… well I hope to keep doing what I’m doing for a long time to come. Channel 7 has been very, very good to me for many years, so I hope and expect to continue to enjoy my work here, my friends, and all that South Florida has to offer.

WIRE COVER: MANY FACES OF PRIDE: MAX EMMERSON

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTO BY JORGE FREIRE & ABEL CRUZ

One of my favorite things about Pride is all of the beautiful boys that fill the streets, pack the floats, and strut their stuff for thousands to see. Pride is definitely a time for us to celebrate our community, but it’s also a time to let loose, have fun, and take in a little eye candy here and there. Max Emmerson is just the right kind of eye candy we love to see at Pride. Not only does he have a beautiful smile and a hot bod; he is also an incredibly smart, grounded film director/writer/actor, who is looking to make a difference in the world through cinema. Max is also very much dedicated to supporting the GLBT community by volunteering his time and even his body at times for various GLBT organizations. In fact, while participating in the Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Bachelor Auction at MOVA, he received the highest bid of the evening!

Describe your first Pride experience? My first Pride was actually in LA. I woke up in an apartment on Santa Monica Boulevard and walked down to my boyfriend’s bar. On the way was a group of bigot protestors yelling bible-verses and threatening damnation. I made a cross-shaped sign and wrote “God Loves Gays” on the side facing away from them. I joined their group but was almost killed when they found out. I made sure to moon them before walking away. The picture showed up online later, it was pretty sweet. Why do you think Pride is so important for our community? It’s important for us to get together as a community to share our culture in a positive way... something other than a circuit party.

Our Stories” (SOS). It’s going to be the highlight event of the Festival with free food and drinks and maybe even a cock-fight! Can you summarize the films you will be screening? The first is a tragedy, an adaptation of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ about self-abuse and self-acceptance. The other is a comedy about two straight models who are kicked out of the model-dorms for ruining a fashion show and go to live with an unsuspecting gay boy. Disaster ensues. What does Pride mean to you? Pride means loving yourself and your community. How do you plan to spend your MB Pride?

We caught up with this young cutie to learn more about the man in front of and behind the camera!

What makes Miami Beach Gay Pride so unique?

Check it out:

It’s got all my friends!

Where are you from?

I understand that that you will be screening a film for the MGLFF. Can you tell me a little bit about that?

Where can we get more information on you and your films?

I’ll be premiering my two short films with MGLFF that I made in college at the University of Miami. They’ll be screened at 1111 Lincoln Road on April 26 as part of a fundraiser for a new program at the Festival called “Save

Check out www.MGLFF.com for info about the Festival, the program, membership or anything else! We’re currently looking for volunteers to help make this year’s festival happen. It’s a great way to be a part of a positive cultural addition to the community.

I’m from Vero Beach, Florida. It’s only three hours north of here, but I think it’s technically a part of South Georgia. What do you do? I’m a model professionally, but I’m working towards a career as a director/writer/actor.

I’ll be working the booth for the film festival in the morning and then bartending for Bar 721 (our official festival bar) in the afternoon. It should be a great day!

WIRE COVER: MANY FACES OF PRIDE: ROBIN SCHWARTS

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTO BY JORGE FREIRE & ABEL CRUZ

I first met Robin a little more than four years ago, when we were both invited by Mayor Matti Bower to serve on her newly formed Gay Business Enhancement Committee for the City of Miami Beach. She was sharp, witty, opinionated, and, at times, even a little bossy, and I just loved her! After working closely with her on the founding Board of Directors of Miami Beach Gay Pride, I learned quickly that her ideals and values were always at the forefront of her actions, and I couldn’t help but admire that. Since then, Robin has gone from business executive to non-profit executive, working as the executive director of the Aqua Foundation for Women – an organization dedicated to protecting the lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered women’s community in South Florida. We were able to catch up with Robin before Miami Beach Gay Pride to get the inside scoop on how she plans to spend her 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride! Check out what she had to say: Where are you from? I am one of the few people who can say, they are originally from Miami. What do you do in Miami? I am the executive director of the Aqua Foundation for

Women, an organization that serves as the funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality in South Florida through grants, scholarships and initiatives. How did you get involved with The Aqua Foundation? I was one of the original founding board members who started the organization. Which new initiatives are you working on this year? We are really focused on a new health initiative. We just put out an RFP to create a directory of health professionals who will provide healthcare to LBT women without discrimination - online and in print. We believe that if such a directory exists, more women will be proactive and go to the doctor before something is actually wrong. Part of the RFP is a marketing campaign to promote the directory and inspire conversation regarding LBT women’s health. How is the Aqua Foundation participating in Pride? We have always had a float in the parade and will definitely do so again this year. Of course, we will have a booth as well.

19 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

You were one of the original board members for Miami Beach Gay Pride. Why did you feel it was important to create a MB Pride? I believe that feeling good about who we are is the key to everything. A Pride festival gives our entire community the opportunity to feel good together. It was unbelievably awesome to be at the first Pride and see our community, straight and gay, black and white, and young and old enjoying a gorgeous day on Miami Beach... together. Pride now includes a number of events, including some women’s events. Are there any events in particular that you are looking forward to? Actually, I am most looking forward to the parade and main event. I like it best when we are all together. From a non-profit standpoint, why is Pride so important? Pride is a wonderful opportunity to remind everyone how important it is for us all to be involved in our community. My hope is that this translates to more people becoming involved in the various non-profits. What are your hopes for Miami Beach Gay Pride? Each person who attends feels they have been part of something meaningful and has lots of pure fun.

WIRE COVER: MANY FACES OF PRIDE: NOEL LEON

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTO BY JORGE FREIRE & ABEL CRUZ

Most of us have heard the fabulous history of the contemporary Gay Pride movement. For our generation, at least, it all began when the GLBT community in New York City had finally had enough and decided to fight back. In 1969 after the New York City Police Department illegally raided a number of gay bars, gay men and women flooded the streets rioting and demanding equality. At the very forefront of this movement – and definitely the most vocal – was the drag community. As some of the bravest members of the GLBT community, these fabulously frocked fellows rocked the streets of New York. To this day, drag queens and drag performers still shine as a beacon of inspiration to be true to yourself and PROUD of who you are. One person who knows this well is Palace drag performer, Noel Leon. The fierce diva will be one of the few drag performers gracing Miami Beach Gay Pride’s Official Latin Stage, and we can’t wait to see what she has in store for us! We were able to catch up with her to learn more about the Latin Stage and what we can expect from Miss Leon during Pride! Check it out! Where are you from? I am from NYC. How long have you been with The Palace? I have been performing at The Palace for over two years now. Why do you think it is important to have a Latin Stage? This is Miami Beach! Why wouldn’t we? Miami is full of

Latin flavor. Argentina, Colombia, Cuba… it is all represented here in Miami, which is why I think it is important to reach out to the Latin GLBT community as well. We also have a lot of Latin lovers who I am sure will be grooving to those Latin beats!

drag queens and fell in love with everything they were doing and representing. It is an honor for me to be the one to give that back now. I am up there spreading my love and expressing my pride.

What will your role be on the stage this year?

Is there one performer that you are looking forward to seeing the most?

I will be performing a fierce Latina jam and all I can say is that there will be a lot of hair tossing and booty shaking!

I am excited to see all the performers! And yes, when I am not up there, I will be dancing and enjoying all that Miami Beach Gay Pride has to offer.

Can you give me a rundown of the entertainment?

How does it make you feel to see that someone as famous as Elvis Crespo has dedicated his national “Indestructible” tour to the GLBT community?

We are going to have a number of fabulous Latin artists hit the stage during Miami Beach Gay Pride. DJ Maximus 3000 will be working the turntables all day long, so you know there will always be a hot beat. Our emcee for the day will be the outlandish Wilson Cruz from the show, “My So Called Life”. In terms of performers, Josue from Genre Latino will kick off the day, followed by, what I am sure if going to be phenomenal performances by Jayquan, Sohanny, Fedro, and the King of Merengue himself, Elvis Crespo! What are you most looking forward to at this year’s Pride? I love seeing our gay community show off how beautiful it is to be comfortable in your own skin. We need to celebrate and show our gay youth that it gets better and life is beautiful. What does Pride mean to you and why do you think it is important? I went to my first pride parade when I was 17 in NYC and felt like I was in a pretend fantasy world. I saw all the

It makes me happy, because someone famous is out there spreading a beautiful message of equality. My heart goes out to the gay teens that do not live in the big cities where they can express themselves without being judged. Elvis Crespo is reaching out to those children, and I will be him giving him a big hug and thank you. Why do you think so many straight artists are standing up for the gay community nowadays? Because it is long overdue for us to have equal rights!!! What are your hopes for Miami Beach Gay Pride? That we will have a beautiful experience and make a lot of noise! Anything you want to say to your fellow Latin Pride attendees? Echa Pa’lante y dile al mundo que lindo es ser GAY!

WIRE COVER: MANY FACES OF PRIDE: DANNY SPRING

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTO BY JORGE FREIRE & ABEL CRUZ

I first met Danny Spring while working with Equality Florida. I was helping the state’s largest GLBT rights organization raise funds in South Florida, and he was not only one of the organization’s major donors; he was also one of the most dedicated volunteers – definitely something you don’t see too often. Since then, Danny and I have worked together on multiple GLBT initiatives, including Miami Beach Gay Pride. He and his partner, Jean Marc, have dedicated a countless amount of hours to making sure MB Pride is bigger and better every year! Check out what Danny had to say to us about this year’s Pride: Where are you from? I grew up in New York, but Miami Beach has been my home for 20 years. What do you do? I am the owner of the South Beach Insurance Agency. We are about to celebrate 20 years in business on Miami Beach. I live in Mid-Beach with Jean Marc, my Partner of 15 years. How did you get involved with Pride? I was always disappointed that Miami Beach did not have its own pride. When Mayor Matti Bower brought this up four years ago, a lot of us realized that we needed to show the world how our city has embraced the gay and lesbian community throughout the years. Joining the parade board was an easy decision. How has Pride evolved over the past three years? We started out with a bang! (Expecting 5,000 to attend and ending up with 20,000). We have grown since then and could possibly see 40,000 people attend this year.

We have become an event that the City and me are very proud of.

ute program on Atlantic Broadband cable shortly after Pride with highlights of the day.

What are you most proud of?

I also understand there will be a number of events.

Our Legacy Couples!!! Chuck Wallace, who sits on the Parade Committee, came up with this idea and he has organized 43 Couples - all together longer than 20 years. Our oldest couple has been together 67 years. It’s so moving to see couples together so long and in love. I am also proud of our families. We will have 50 children walking with their gay and lesbian parents this year. What makes this year’s Pride so unique? We are a diverse community, and Miami Beach Pride shows that. From drag queens to six-packed muscle boys to families, Pride has it all. I also love our Super Hero theme created by Tony Lima’s marketing team. Our community is filled with many Super Heroes. Pride is when we show this to the world. You were the chair of the Parade Committee. Can you give us the inside scoop on the Parade and why it is going to be so great? Our float participants have become very creative this year, and we will see some amazing floats with many using the Super Hero theme. I can’t wait to see the line up on the 16th. Our parade has well over 60 entries with 1,400 individuals. It does not hurt that our backdrop is the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful Art Deco buildings. I also understand that we will be broadcasting the Parade live. How did that come about? Over 100,000 people watched last year’s parade via webcast. We really wanted to highlight our parade participants this year and we will have them stop at 12th and Ocean where Mark “Marky G” Gilbert and Karen Brown will emcee the parade and talk about the businesses and non-profit organizations that make our community so special. Log into www.miamibeachgaypride. com to view the parade live. We will also have a 30-min-

Friday night kicks off Pride with an uber-glam event at the W South Beach. Mova will also have a block party on Friday Night that is free to the public. Saturday night, Billy and the Score team will have an event at the Ice Palace called URGE. Sunday is lounge time at the Lords Hotel Pool Party. There are many other events throughout the weekend. Visit www.miamibeachgaypride.com for more information. Can you give us a rundown of the schedule? The parade and expo will kick off at 12 p.m. with BRAVO’s Andy Cohen as our Grand Marshall, followed by entertainment all day on the Pride Stage. The Palace will also have two stages with one devoted to Latin talent with Elvis Crespo performing. Herb Sosa and Unity Coalition will have a series of lectures at the 10th Street auditorium. Food and drinks will be available all day. The Miami Beach Gay Pride booth will have a schedule of all events taking place during the day. What does Pride mean to you? I am proud of who I am and what I have achieved. Pride allows me to reflect on this and share the day with my friends and family. How do you plan to spend your MB Pride? I will be everywhere making sure the day goes smoothly. What’s in the future for MB Pride? It can only get bigger and better from here. I envision Pride becoming a week-long event in the future and engaging our younger gay and lesbian community to ensure that Miami Beach Gay Pride continues for many years to come.

WIRE COVER: MANY FACES OF PRIDE: HILTON WOLMAN

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTO BY JORGE FREIRE & ABEL CRUZ

Hilton Wolman has been THE MAN behind the scenes of South Beach nightlife for more than two decades. As one of the owners of the legendary club, Salvation, Hilton has built quite a following of party boys, club kids, and some of the biggest names in dance music.

It’s been great watching it grow with support from the entire South Florida community.

Who are your DJs and why did you select them?

Why do you think Pride is so important?

This year, he is partnering with Score’s Billy Kemp and Luis Morera to produce the official Miami Beach Gay Pride after party – URGE! The high-energy dance event will take place at one of Miami’s most over the top dance destinations, The Ice Palace Studios, and feature DJs Power Infiniti, J.Felix, Abel, and Paulo from LA.

Because it allows us to show our diversity and at the same time educate people to the fact that you cannot stereotype us. At Pride you get to see all types of gay people, all ages, all body-types.

We spent a fair amount of time discussing DJs with our regular clientele and we believe that we have something that will appeal to almost everyone. On the patio we have Alex Infiniti and J.Felix spinning open format and top-40s, while inside DJ Abel is joined by DJ Paulo from Los Angeles for a harder, more tribal sound.

How did Urge come about?

What makes Miami Beach Gay Pride so unique?

We wanted a unique new identity for a Miami based party that we could build on, but at the same time not limit ourselves to using it just one weekend a year. Hopefully people will feel the Urge to come out dancing on a regular basis.

The location! While there are memorable Pride parades and festivals in numerous cities around the world, few can match the natural beauty of Ocean Drive.

Check out what Hilton had to say to us in a brief interview: Where are you from? I was born in Durban, South Africa. What do you do here in Miami? The thing I enjoy most is producing dance parties, many of which benefit local and national charitable organizations. There is nothing more rewarding than looking around and seeing smiling faces, knowing that people are having a great time while supporting a worthwhile cause. How did you get involved with Pride? I’ve been producing parties in Miami since 1998, when I was one of the owners of the legendary Salvation. Three years ago Billy and Luis from Score invited me to help them with their Saturday night event at the inaugural Pride and we’ve collaborated each year since then. How has Pride evolved over the past three years? I think the first year all of us were totally blown away by the attendance, which surpassed all of our expectations.

What can people expect during Urge? Great music - regardless of your musical taste - sumptuous surroundings, friendly staff, and well priced drinks. Of course we’ll have some interesting décor, stunning visual effects, and the hottest dancers around. Why did you choose Ice Palace Studios West for your location? It’s a venue that worked really well when I used it previously for both White Party and Winter Party, with spectacular décor and both indoor and outdoor facilities. But it’s also a venue that we don’t get an opportunity to use very often, so there is a certain excitement related to going somewhere different. Added to that is the fact that we can have guests of 18 and over and the party doesn’t need to end at 5 a.m.

22 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

What are you most excited about during this year’s Gay Pride? I think most of us that have been involved with Pride have really been thrilled by the attendance, which has exceeded all our expectations. This year I’m hearing from many out-of-towners who are coming here specifically for Pride. How do you plan to spend your MB Pride? We are very fortunate this year that the owners of Ice Palace Studios are letting us do our set up a few days ahead of time, which means that I’ll be able to enjoy the parade and festival instead of being hard at work setting up the venue! What do you hope for Miami Beach Gay Pride? I hope to see continued growth as well as support from the entire community, regardless of whether they are gay or straight.

WIRE FEATURE: DON GIOVANNI: MOZART’S TANTALIZING TALE OF THE WORLD’S MOST INFAMOUS LOVER

There are several beloved opera masterpieces, but only one is considered by many as the most perfect opera ever written. The tantalizing tale of Don Giovanni premiered in 1787 at the Teatro di Praga by the Prague Italian opera, yet Don Juan’s saga of seduction, murder, unfaithfulness, betrayal, and intrigue continues to electrify audiences today as it did when Mozart first wrote this magnum opus. Billed as a drama giocoso – a mix of serious and comic action – and catalogued by Mozart as an opera buffa, Don Giovanni brings audiences an alluring spectacle of comedy, melodrama, and supernatural elements. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart used the story of Don Juan, the most infamous lover that ever lived, to create Don Giovanni, one of the operatic stage’s most unforgettable and garish characters. Only a year after succeeding with the Marriage of Figaro, Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte decided to embark on their second collaboration. Now we have our chance to enjoy this amazing opera in South Florida thanks to the Florida Grand Opera’s last two productions of the season, Don Giovanni (premiering on April 16 at the Adrienne Arsht Center Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House) and Cyrano (premiering on April 23, also at the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House). If you love opera, Don Giovanni is a must see. If you have never been to the opera, this is your opportunity to experience a classic tale composed by

the mastery of Mozart. Don Giovanni will thrill you with a vivid story of seduction, betrayal and rousing sword fights, as opera’s Don Juan confronts the consequences of his many conquests and sins - including a long list of lovers that purports 640 in Italy, 231 in Germany, 100 in France, 91 in Turkey, and 1,003 in Spain. Baritone David Pittsinger, who previously portrayed Count Rodolfo in the 2007 Florida Grand Opera’s La Sonnambula and Scarpia in the 2008 Tosca, returns to sing the title role in Don Giovanni. David has performed the role of Don Giovanni for the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the New York City Opera, and the Colorado Opera. He also performs frequently at the Metropolitan Opera and other leading companies worldwide, and was much acclaimed on Broadway as Emilie in South Pacific. Bass-baritone Tom Corbeil returns as Leporello, Don Giovanni’s loyal servant and peccadillo accomplice. Tom portrayed Don Basilio in the Florida Grand Opera’s The Barber of Seville last season. Tenor Andrew Bidlack will play the role of Don Ottavio, Donna Anna’s fiancé who swore to avenge Don Giovanni’s assassination of his future father-in-law the Commendatore, in a duel to protect his beloved daughter Anna from Giovanni’s seductive tentacles. The role of Donna Elvira, Giovanni’s previous sexual conquest hot on his trail to avenge his betrayal, will be sung by soprano Georgia Jarman. Georgia frequently performs at the New York City Opera and leading opera

companies in the United States, Europe and South America, and was lauded by the New York Times as “a luminous, appealing, and agile voice.” Soprano Jacquelyn Wagner will debut for the Florida Grand Opera as Donna Anna, the daughter hell bent on avenging the killing of her father, the Commendatore, by a masked Giovanni who sneaked into Anna’s house to seduce her. This will be Jacquelyn’s official American operatic debut. Morris Robinson, Metropolitan Opera bass and former all-American football player, will delight audiences with his powerful role as the Commendatore. The Washington Post acclaimed Morris as a “booming but well-articulated bass,” and he returns to the Florida Grand Opera after last playing the role of Ramfis in the 2006 Aida. John Pascoe, who originally designed and directed Don Giovanni for the Washington National Opera, will direct this opera. Andrew Bisantz, the Florida Grand Opera’s Resident Conductor, will lead this year’s performances, on the heels of his highly acclaimed conduction of the 20092010 season-opening double bill of Pagliacci and Suor Angelica. Don Giovanni will be sung in beautiful Italian with both English and Spanish projected translations for Miami’s audiences. Make sure to visit www.fgo.org for performance days and times, plus videos with additional information and interviews about Don Giovanni and Cyrano.

PRIDE IS A CHOICE This year, the Magic City celebrates Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride with the 3rd Annual Miami Beach Gay Pride Parade and Festival. The event is free of charge and all are welcome to attend and participate in the festivities – gay, straight, it doesn’t matter – what’s important is the connection we all share as human beings, and the recognition of our love and positive regard for one another, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The fact that the parade and festival are open to the general public and free of charge does not mean that an event like this is inexpensive to produce. Last year’s Miami Beach Pride brought out over 35,000 people from all walks of life and from all over the world, and was made possible by the generous sponsors who support our community. In order for us to grow stronger and healthier, it is essential that we identify and support these sponsors, so that they are able to continue the good work that they do. Also, if you are in a position to do so, you can make a donation to Miami Beach Gay Pride at their secure website (www.MiamiBeachGayPride. com). Pride is an accomplishment, but it is also an emotion that becomes more meaningful when shared among those who love and support one another.
