ALL WIRED UP
BY THOMAS BARKER
WHERE YOU @ GEN Y? One of the things I love most about living in South Beach is that there is always something to do. Between cocktailing with friends, checking out the latest fashions at the opening of a hot new clothing boutique, and the sensational nightlife, it is sometimes difficult to remember that the rest of the world exist! This is a thought that crossed my mind, while conversing with Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower at a recent fundraising event. It seems that many people of my generation – Gen Y – are typically so focused on living the glamorous life that we tend to forget that there is a big, scary world out there beyond the security of our multimillion dollar condo buildings, high-end eateries, and GLBT friendly bubble. As a result, many of us don’t take the time to focus on political issues that affect our equality on a state and national level. Sure, Miami Beach – and South Florida for that matter – serves as the poster child for cities that have gone above and beyond to protect the gay community; but, what about the hundreds of thousands more of us around the world, who have to live in terror of discrimination or of being targeted for something as simple as our sexuality? As someone who regularly attends City Committee Meetings, various GLBT rights organization fundraising events, and political rallies, I am always surprised by
the lack of support by Gen Y, especially since members of our generation are making headlines by committing suicide, being attacked, or even killed for their sexuality.
GLBT bullying, harassment, or discrimination in the public school system! Not only was I shocked that someone could even come up with such an openly discriminatory piece of legislation, but was also blown away by the fact that it passed a committee in the Tennessee State Senate, and is on its way to be voted on by the Senate!
This past week, I was forwarded a video of 22-year old Chrissy Lee Polis, a Baltimore transgendered woman, being beaten and dragged across a local McDonalds by a 14-year old girl and her 18-year old counterpart – simply because Chrissy wanted to use the restroom. The video was taken by a McDonald’s employee, and while Chrissy’s screams for help went unacknowledged, a number of McDonald’s employees cackled, hooted, hollered, and screamed for more.
You’ve got to be kidding me! In this week’s issue of Wire Magazine, we have dedicated our cover story to someone who has not only been a straight ally of our community, but also a champion when it comes to our issues. From the moment Congresswoman and newly appointed DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz was elected to office 18 years ago, she has dedicated an incredible amount of time to protecting our rights, fighting for equality, and putting her political career on the line to do what is right!
The video ends with Chrissy seizing on the floor, while McDonalds employees scream for the attackers to leave before the police arrive, so they don’t get caught. Luckily, Chrissy survived the attack, and the State of Maryland is strongly considering to prosecute the attackers with a hate crime. In another part of the United States, Tennessee to be exact, hundreds of gay families are gearing up to battle a proposed piece of legislation, dubbed the ‘don’t say gay’ bill, which would mandate that before ninth grade, teachers not “provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality.”
On Friday, May 20th from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., SAVE Dade will host The Champions of Equality Awards in honor of Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz, The ACLU, and Greenberg Traurig LLP for their incredible work. I hope that you will come out and show your support of SAVE Dade and the award recipients. It is organizations and people like this that work the frontlines to fight for our rights!
To make matters worse, the bill would prevent teachers from addressing issues related to gay teens and gay families, meaning that there would be no protection against

TRUMP’S CRAZY TALK
I have a lot of respect for the Office of the President of the United States and any man (or woman) willing to take on such an enormous task and all the challenges and sacrifices that come with the job. So, even though I disagree with several of the things President Obama has done or not done during his tenure, this week I feel compelled to point out why Donald Trump should never be President or run for President for that matter. The most important reasons are that Trump acts like a bully, refuses to acknowledge obvious facts, and is quick to hurl insults at people who disagree with his baseless allegations regarding the President not being born in the United States.
This week and last week have probably been the busiest weeks ever for Thomas and I working on wire magazine. Why? For a couple of very good reasons: We have been working To be a successful leader and President of the United States you have to be willing to accept the facts and be respectful of others opinions. You must also be willing and very hard on producing our second able to compromise and work with others. Stig’s was selected because his birth announcement was published on the same page of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspaper as President Obama’s. 2) They interviewed Dr. Chiyome Fukino, former director of the Hawaii Department of Health, and a Republican, who stated she had seen the President’s original birth certificate and had no doubt President Obama was born in Hawaii. 3) They also confirmed that all birth announcements in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, at the time, came directly from hospital birth records and were not placed by parents or family members.

POST MODERN
It is that zeal, and no little bit of lobbyist influence, driving the state and GOP legislators specifically, toward the idea of contacting private companies to run a good percentage of the state’s overcrowded, under-performing prisons -- notably South Florida prisons. In making their argument, proponents of the plan -- which is still largely in the works-- cite the cost advantages of privatization, since the plan is being shopped around as one of Tallahassee’s costcutting measure in light of the current economic state.
And one of the arguments opponents make is totally laughable. The most strident members of the opposition -- primarily the media -- like to claim that privatization will result in abuse and neglect of the prison population. It’s this debate’s version of the “starve granny” campaign that opponents have employed for generations when government tries to rein in entitlement expenditures. Not only do I not equate private prison management with increased abuse of prisoners, but I also can’t help but think that Florida’s felons have it a lot easier than a lot of non-criminals in the state. No one is offering to pay for our healthcare and college education. What really leaves me undecided on the issue is cost. Supporters claim that the plan would save seven percent or so on annual prison expenses. However, there is scant little evidence to support the assertion. While it seems self-evident that privatization would decrease costs (historically, it almost always has), it seems risky to head off into uncharted waters without a map. Florida residents don’t need the state pulling a Christopher Columbus with our tax dollars.
Sometimes honest supporters of a principle are zealous enough to overlook Opponents to the proposal rightly cite the practicalities of things. If there is one principle that unites the elements of the state Republican Party, from bible belt north Floridians to libertarian-leaning Monroe County sorts, it is that the private sector is better at achieving actual goals than is the public sector. Based on available data, it isn’t a bad philosophy. Yes, examining areas where apple-for-apple comparisons are possible, they have a point. Private schools perform considerably better than better-funded public schools. Private mail carriers perform better -- and cheaper -- than the US Post Office. Other examples abound.

WIRE COVER: DEBBIE WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ: FIGHTING FOR GLBT EQUALITY
I remember the first time I met Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. I was working with Equality Florida at one of their major donor events, and the room was abuzz with talk about the appearance of the famous Congresswoman. From stories of her continued support of our community by placing LGBT rights at the forefront of her platform to her serving as the founding Vice President of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, this woman just seemed to be one of our biggest allies, and I can honestly say that when I actually put the face to the name, I could see why. Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz has regularly stood up for our community, and many other minority communities, as it relates to equality. She is one of the few politicians that has never waivered her support, and has never once cast a vote that would jeopardize the future of the GLBT community. This is why it comes as no big surprise that she will be recognized on Friday, May 20th from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Champions for Equality Awards benefiting local GLBT rights organization, SAVE Dade. And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve most likely heard that one of our biggest “champions” was also recently appointed by President Obama to serve as the Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee,
BY THOMAS BARKER so not only is Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz an ally; she is a pretty powerful friend! I was lucky enough to snag an interview with the busy married mother of three, who just happens to be a congresswoman, so instead of writing a long winded intro, I thought it would be best if you got to hear from the fabulous lady herself.
among my colleagues for important LGBT initiatives, including extending equal rights, repealing discriminatory laws, eliminating hate-motivated violence, and improving the health and well-being for all Americans, regardless of sexual orientation or gender.
Check it out:
I’ve always focused on civil rights – it goes to the core of my public service. America is at its strongest when all of our citizens have equal access to our guaranteed life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.
When and why did you decide to get into politics?
How has the gay community supported you in the past?
I decided to run for public office more than eighteen years ago because I believe that one person can make a difference.
I am proud that my commitment to the LGBT community has been recognized by SAVE Dade, Equality Florida, The Dolphin Democrats, Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Pride Center Florida, and others.
A lot of politicians tend to avoid GLBT issues; yet, you have put us at the forefront of your platform. Why is that? I am proud to represent South Florida, with its vibrant GLBT community, in Congress, and I am especially proud to be a founding Vice Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus. In that capacity, I build consensus

Becoming the chairwoman of the DNC couldn’t have been an easy task. How did that come about? For the past two years, I have served as a Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee. I also served as

Vice Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and as the Frontline Chair of the DCCC (protecting Democratic incumbents). I have previously served as Chair of the Red to Blue Program (helping challengers and open seat races throughout America) for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2006 and 2008 election cycle. I’m a ‘give me the ball’ type of person, and the coach just put me in the game.
lican forces are doing everything they can to prevent Democrats from succeeding in those goals. As we look toward 2012 in particular, I’m going to be working hard every day to guarantee that President Obama and Democratic candidates up and down the ballot are in the best position to win their races. That was my promise to the President and that will be my promise to every single Democrat across the country.
What do you hope to accomplish with this new role?
A lot of people have been critical of Obama’s stance on issues like Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. How do you think President Obama has done in regards to GLBT equality?
I am so honored and humbled to be President Obama’s choice to serve as the next DNC chair, and I look forward to seeking approval by my colleagues on the Democratic National Committee to serve in this important role. The DNC shares my core mission to help Democrats succeed – electorally and legislatively – so that we are able to deliver on, and win the future for, the American people. Tim Kaine will be a tough act to follow at the DNC, but I am hopeful that I will be able to build on his successful tenure, make our party even stronger, and elect and re-elect Democrats up and down the ticket in 2011 and 2012. During my tenure, there will be nothing more important to our party or to the American people than advancing President Obama’s agenda and ensuring that he is elected to a second term, so we can continue to move our country forward.
My heart was full when President Obama signed into law the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I am so proud of all the Congressional leaders who came together with our President to finally make this dishonorable policy a thing of the past. This is just the first of many major victories that are achievable when we all work together. We are so fortunate to have a steadfast ally in the White House. I’m so delighted that President Obama has announced that his administration will no longer defend the inaccurately-titled Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
I have always been proud to be a Democrat. Throughout history, the great leaders of our party have labored alongside our community and grassroots activists to advance Americans’ rights and increase opportunity for all Americans. So it is with even greater pride that I will take up our Party’s torch and continue to fight for progress at the Democratic Party.
But President Obama has also extended benefits to samesex partners of Federal employees, hired and appointed a record number of qualified LGBT Americans to significant positions, launched high profile anti-bullying initiatives, and lifted the HIV Entry Ban. He has ordered HHS to ensure equal visitation and medical decision making rights in America’s hospitals, and he called for a first of its kind study of the state of science regarding LGBT health at the Institutes of Medicine—just to name a few major steps forward.
All across America, Democratic leaders are fighting hard to create jobs and boost economic recovery, deliver real education reforms that guarantee American students are able to get ahead, and further the causes of justice and equality. Yet all across this country, entrenched Repub-
There are still many battles to be waged, but we are on the path to equality, and on the path to ensuring that every American has equal rights— including to love who we choose and to have that choice recognized in the eyes of the law. President Obama has been, and will

continue to be, a resolute partner in this fight that we can and must win. Why do you think local GLBT rights organizations like SAVE Dade are important? Hate is born from ignorance. Organizations, such as SAVE Dade, educate not only their constituencies, but the communities around us. So, it is critical that local advocacy groups continue to bring issues such as marriage equality, employment non-discrimination and gay adoption to the forefront, not only engaging those within the GLBT community, but those outside it as well. The work they do strengthens our community, and I am pleased to be a partner in that fight. How do you feel about receiving the Champion of Equality Award? I am humbled to receive SAVE Dade’s Champion of Equality Award and accept it on one basic principle— that we are all created equal! What are your hopes for the GLBT community, and what are your plans to help us get there? My hope is that we see a day when we no longer have to pass legislation in order to justify the basic right guaranteed to all Americans in the United States Constitution - that we are all created equal. I will continue to work every day, along with our President, to achieve this goal.
