ALL WIRED UP

BY THOMAS BARKER

AQUA GIRL WEEKEND IS HERE! One of the things that makes South Beach so great is the fabulous GLBT dance events that take place here throughout the year. Winter Party, White Party, Summerfest, the ancillary events of Miami Beach Gay Pride, and this week’s Aqua Girl Festival continue to keep SoBe on the map as one of the hottest gay destinations in the world! This week, we have dedicated our issue to the largest Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered fundraising event in the country – Aqua Girl Weekend. Now in its 12th year, Aqua Girl has done an amazing job of providing much needed financial and community support to a number of local organizations through the Aqua Foundation for Women. After bringing Robin Schwartz on board as the executive director, the Aqua Foundation has really honed in on its mission to serve as the funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality in South Florida through grants, scholarships, and initiatives. In fact, the Aqua Foundation is currently celebrating a massive achievement of giving over $388,000 to the community through scholarships and grants, and most of that money comes from the various dance and cultural events that will take place over the next few days. How great is it that by partying your ass off and dancing the night away at some of the most opulent nightlife destinations, you are also helping your community!

Aqua Girl Weekend will kick off this week on Thursday, May 12th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ocean Drive’s only gay bar and restaurant, The Palace, with a daily happy hour until Saturday, May 14th! If you’re an out of towner, looking to enjoy some delicious eye candy paired with a stiff cocktail, there is no better place than the Palace, as hundreds of nearly naked girls tend to pack the joint during Aqua Girl Weekend.

appear on television. She will be performing some hysterical tidbits from her newest show Semi-Sweet-Live.

If cocktailing isn’t your thing, you can check out the LGBT Walking Tour of South Beach. Get a behind the scenes look at the architecture that has made SoBe so famous, as well as the details on how the GLBT community has influenced one of the world’s sexiest islands!

Saturday, enjoy the official Aqua Girl Pool Party with DJs Just Steph and Pat Pat, as well as some seriously sexy moves by the go go Vixens! After a day at the pool, you can grab a prix fixed meal for only $55 at one of my favorite restaurants, Smith & Wollensky.

Later that night, the girls will get wild at Dream Nightclub for the annual Traffic Jam dance party. DJs Brynn Taylor and Nena will be working the turntables while go-go girls work the speaker boxes. The highlight of this event is always the glow stick necklaces, which tell you if you should proceed with caution, take a hike, or go for it!

Saturday night is all about let’n loose and get’n wild at the Paradise Garage with DJs Lisa Pittman and Latrice Perry. Beyond the great music, you’ll also get to catch a fashion show by 1160 Hair and GAG, as well as a performance by Nina Sky.

After getting your laugh on, head over to Nicki Beach for the spiciest night of Aqua Girl Weekend, Havana Nights. This party always attracts a delicious group of Latina women and the women who love them. Throw on your cha cha heels, because DJs Marilyn and Tatiana will be turning up the heat that night!

Sunday is all about my favorite event, the Co-Ed dance party, Aqualicious Tea Dance with DJs Theresa and Kidd Madonny. This event always attracts hundreds of ladies and hundreds of guys, looking to enjoy some fab beats paired with delicious cocktails!

Of course Aqua Girl Weekend wouldn’t be complete without a scandalous pool party, and that is exactly what you will get on Friday during the Splash Pool Party. DJs Citizen Jane and G-Spot will be working the turntables, while you dance poolside at one of SoBe’s most infamous resorts, The Surfcomber.

Overall, there seems to be an endless supply of things to do this weekend, and we look forward to seeing you out and about!

Later that night, enjoy an evening of comedy with Suzanne Westenhoefer, the first openly gay comedian to

See you on the dance floor!

FUN SUMMER ADVENTURES & VOTERS BEWARE!

The last week or so we’ve had beautiful weather in Miami and the Beaches. Although we can feel summer in the air, temperatures have been quite moderate. Several nights in the mid 70s have made sitting outside a very enjoyable experience. We must definitely get out there and enjoy these pleasant temperatures before summer kicks in and it starts getting hot. On Sunday, we had a fabulous time sitting on the front porch of the Lords South Beach for our Wire Magazine Traveling Brunch under their ceiling fans. We truly enjoyed eating outdoors in the shade, while sipping spiked punch and eating delicious food. In preparation for summer, we also need to start planning our summer vacations and “staycations” – a nice vacation by staying local. As I look at the stunning blue ocean outside my window, I am reminded that, living in beautiful Miami and the Beaches, we often forget that people from around the world dream of coming to Miami on vacation. Many of them save money for years to visit, splurge, and have an amazing time enjoying Miami Beach, partying, eating out, doing water sports, etc. So besides planning to travel to other destinations, we certainly must do more exploring and having fun locally. It is for this reason that in the comings weeks I plan to bring you some ideas about fun summer adventures right in our backyard. We really don’t have to get on a plane and travel for hours to have a great time and a nice break from the daily grind. My first adventure currently in the works will be a trip out on Ocean Force Adventures’ sightseeing boat tour on a Zodiac rubber inflatable – the same boat used by the U.S. special forces, DEA, Coast Guard, and FBI. Stay tuned for my adventure write-up, photos, and video. I definitely look forward to this two-hour outdoor adventure in the beautiful blue ocean I am looking at right now from my window. There is a reason this adventure is the #1 rated sightseeing boat tour in Miami Beach on tripadvisor.com

This week and last week have probably been the busiest weeks ever for Thomas and I working on wire magazine. Why? For a couple of very good reasons: We have been working very hard on producing our second ever Pride collector’s edition of wire magazine – that we think you will really enjoy reading through. In dition, we have also been working non-stop on the first ever ficial Gay Pride Pool Party, which Wire magazine l host Saturday, 17th atSouth theFlorida hotel Victor with This localon adventure will be the first ofApril several to come. I know has a lot to offer, and I plan to explore some of it for you. Sometimes we are so busy we forget that we Vodka can definitely have an amazing time if we choose to do so. Frankly, I nlandia and herradura Tequila as sponsors. used to do that before becoming so ubber busy with Wire in the last three years. I’ve decided it is time to have some out-of-box fun once again and share it with you, so you can do the same!

Wire’s summer adventure ideas will also include other great destinations beyond our eally is hard toUnited believe that year gone by since we beautiful shores. The States and the a world offer a has lot to doalready this summer, and planning ahead will help you lock in some great deals to beautiful places. I recently visited New Wire could bring Collector’s you some ideas on what to do in theof BigWire magazine, blished theOrleans first soever Pride Edition Easy – which is less than 1.5 hours by plane from MIA. Stay tuned for my feature story about New Orleans, plus some great photos and video to make it come alive! that is definitely the case. Pride is once again taking place in Before I close this week’s column, I want to strongly encourage all of you to vote to a) elect a new Miami-Dade mayor, and b) decide on the proposed county charter ami Beach this Saturday and we hope that all our readers in amendments. It is of the upmost importance that we accomplish two objectives: 1) find an effective replacement to Carlos Alvarez – we went through a lot of trouble to get rid of him through a recall, lauderdale and 2) prevent the county commission from succeeding with ami and Fort will have a chance to enjoy this several charter amendments designed to give commissioners more power and the ability to stay in office for a long time. Countries and corporations are run by presidents ek’s Collector’s Edition. We couldn’t have gotten and 2010 CEOs, not byPride commissions or boards of directors. Why? Because it is impossible to effectively manage a large, successful enterprise by committee. re without all your support, and the support of our advertisers, Miami needs an effective, honest, hard working leader that works for the taxpayers and can fix our city once and for all. The commissioners had their chance and couldn’t onsors, and all the the terms Wire staff. Thanks very much get the job done before. POST MODERN VOTERS SHOULD REJECT PHONY REFORM AND ITS AUTHORS Early voting began this week in what I suspect will be one of the most disappointing count-wide ballots in recent South Florida history. Even if this ballot were laden with strong candidates and real reform items, it would tend to be disappointing after the landmark vote that jettisoned a lousy county mayor and put an even lousier county commission in the angry public’s sights. It’s always easier to tear down the bad than it is to build a foundation for good. Of course the county mayor’s choice on the ballot is the sexy item. But it really shouldn’t be. Given the current economic and political environment, the next mayor is going to face a lot of challenges, not the least of which will be a fractured electorate and a bitchy chastised county commission. I strongly suspect the next mayor will be fairly short term. Given the public’s success in dumping Carlos Alvarez, I believe voters’ patience with MiamiDade’s next alcalde will be rather short. Frankly, I don’t see anyone in the race with the courage or intellect to be able to make substantive change in the county. You have some same-old, same-old ambitious pols and you have some well-meaning clueless political neophytes. How serious can we take an election in which the few percentage points that a half-wit walking stereotype like Luther Campbell might make a difference in who gets elected? If there is one word of advice I would give the next mayor it is this: don’t quit your day job. Of course, sitting officials might not have a choice to maintain their actual jobs if all of the bogus reform measures also on the ballot are passed. That’s because one of the items would restrict county elected officials from holding private jobs. That’s right, in Miami-Dade County, permanently inscribing into law the requirement that electeds officially become professional politicians is considered “reform.” American founding fathers would be spinning in the grave if they read the list of “reforms” on this ballot, but they haven’t been able to find a sample ballot in English yet. The other ballot items have a similar mix of un-observed irony and typical political manipulation. There are term limits that, if passed, would mean they have no actual effect on any current members of the county commission until they are old enough for Century Village.

My favorite smoke screen is the proposal to empower a county charter review committee to make revision suggestions and then put the proposals directly to the public for a vote. Supporters believe this end-run around the county commission would take politics out of charter review since previous committees have seen their suggestions ignored by the power-drunk commission. Apple pie, right? Except one little detail. The county commission would choose the members of the charter review committee, meaning it will be filled with commissioners’ supporters. Give me a break. That’s not reform. That’s just creating more positions of influence to expand the ruling class’s ranks. A weak lobbying ban and raises for county commissioners are too pathetic to even warrant criticism -- it’s too obvious. The most insane item on the ballot is the reversal of the strong mayor position. Now this isn’t an intrinsically bad idea. I think a reasonable debate on the item is worthy, and my personal feelings are ambiguous. But the item is lunacy because of what it is in context -- a power grab by the county commission. The strong mayor position came about because without it, there is effectively no accountability at the county level. Now, as a reform item, the commission wants to change the nature of the government back to one in which their self-serving manipulations are hidden behind a huge bureaucracy? The commission really sees this as a logical extension of the civic activism behind this whole election? No, really? Cynically one could look at the ballot items and say, hmm, in response to public disgust with county electeds, the county commission is giving themselves a raise, codifying their incumbent seats for a dozen years, giving themselves more power, and crafting new committees and powersharing structure to avoid any accountability or personal responsibility. That’s reform? Well, that’s what’s on this month’s ballot. Pardon me if I don’t faint from breathless anticipation. --Author and journalist Michael W. WIRE COVER: KID MADONNY HEADLINES AQUA GIRL TEA DANCE

by Thomas Barker // photos by Dale Stine outh Florida is home to an incredibly diverse community that includes thousands of gay men and women, which is why it is always surprising to me that there are not more Co-Ed events. When it comes to causes like GLBT rights or HIV health resources for the gay community, there really is not one particular gender that is more affected by these social issues than the other. One organization that truly understands that and is doing what it can to bring our community together is the Aqua Girl Foundation. On Sunday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aqua Girl will host the Aqualicious Tea Dance at The Surfcomber. The Co-Ed event was created three years ago, as a way to bring the boys into the mix, and what better way to do it than with the super sexy Kidd Madonny. Kidd Madonny is no stranger to the entertainment industry. As the driving force behind 3DX INC - the Miami-based design and production company known for its unique, visually enticing creativity - Kidd has spent over a decade immersed in almost every aspect of nightclub production: decor, costume design, and performance. His talent has taken him around the globe, including Tokyo, Montreal, and Acapulco and landed him in some of the world’s hottest nightclubs. Better yet, it has given him the opportunity to work alongside the most sought after DJs in the industry, setting the stage for what has become one of his greatest passions. Born with an immense love for music, Kidd was naturally drawn to each DJ’s talent. Fascinated by their modern day Pied Piper capabilities, he easily recalls the first time a DJ floored him. “I was dancing at Arena and Junior Vasquez was spinning,” explains Kidd. “He had a song sitting on a loop for five minutes. The crowd’s reaction mirrored his own, an enthusiastic momentum that continued throughout the party. By the end of the night, a light bulb had turned on. I was like, ‘Wow!’ This is what you can do with mixing!” Intrigued, Kidd became the proverbial sideline student, learning all he could from those willing to teach. Naming Junior as his most influential inspiration and “the mentor since the beginning”, he credits Abel and Eddie X as the next to open his eyes. From them, Kidd gained an appreciation for different sounds, methods, and techniques. 10 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

WIRE COVER: KID MADONNY HEADLINES AQUA GIRL TEA DANCE How do you think the music scene has evolved since you first started spinning? The style of music changes almost very three months. Everyone was into vocal then tribal, then trance... just like disco, pop, 80s, or urban. I feel music is like fashion. It comes and it goes… like the circle of life What are you most looking forward to during the Aqualicious Tea Dance? The girls and boys dancing together! What can people expect to hear? Fun, uplifting, high-energy house music. How does a gay DJ find himself spinning at a fundraising event for a women’s charity organization? Kidd describes his musical style as a blend of vocals, a little bit of “disco house remixes”, progressive house, electro, and the all-important tribal. “It always has the drum beats behind it. You’re always going to hear something new,” he continues. “I think as a DJ you should always educate the crowd.”

What has been the most exciting part of being a DJ?

We were able to snag an interview with the beefy DJ before this weekend’s wild Aqua Girl festivities.

So many!!! Junior Vasquez gave me my first turntable in 2000, and that was the beginning of my DJ inspiration. I’ve been very fortunate to work with almost every DJ in the world. I have watched and learned so much from all of them. From Abel and Peter Rohaufer to Tiesto, Steve Lawler, Oscar G, Erik Morillo and the list goes on and on!!! I look up to all of them!!!

Check out what he had to say: Where are you from and when did you move to Miami? I was actually born and raised in Miami all my life. Miami is a place I love to call home. When did you decide that music was what you wanted to do with your life? Music has been part of my life since I was a kid! I was in marching band through junior high and high school, playing the saxophone. Music eventually became my inspiration when I went to the New World School of the Arts for dance! Where does the name Kidd Madonny come from? Back in 1994/1995, I was dancing at Glam Slam for Prince’s wife, Maite. We had a dance show every Thursday to Sunday and we all needed stage names. Since I was under age, I went with Kidd. Maite said that they used to call Prince Kidd, and that I needed to be Kidd something. Being a huge fan of Madonna, I went with Madonny, so Kidd Madonny was born! When did you get your first break? 2006 was my first real gig. I opened for Victor Calderone at the Coliseum in Fort Lauderdale.

The crowd!!! When they’re just dancing, jumping, and feeling so happy to my music!!! Which DJs have inspired you?

You’ve traveled all over the world and worked with some of the most infamous people in the biz. What has been your most memorable experience? So many parties!!! But, what comes to mind was the closing party for the Gay Games in Cologne in August of last year. Over 4000 partygoers and athletes from all over the world came together. I loved how they all had their different medals on the dance floor! I also understand that you have an event production company. How did that come about? I had a previous production company called RKM with my former partner. When the relationship ended, I bought him out and continued designing costumes and decor and doing production under the new name 3DX INC. We do all the decor for many events and nightclubs locally and all over the world. We have clients that include Aqua Girl, Care Resource, Atlantis Cruises, Absolut, 42Below, LIV, Opium Group, Space, Miami Masquerade, Ultra Music Festival, Mark Barker Events, Prism Toronto, and New Century Dance... just to name a few. What makes your company different from most others? We actually design and make everything in house. We are always trying new things, as we like to be cutting edge.

11 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

This is my second time playing for the girls. I’m honored to play for them again. Their girls are just as crazy as the boys, and they love to party!!! Do you think it is important for there to be CoEd events like the one your spinning at? It is very important. It’s an event for a great cause, and we should support each of these events! It’s all about unity! What other projects are you working on? Projects! How many pages do we have! There are so many right now. I’ve been in the studio working on a couple of tracks and I also have my Kidd Madonny clothing line working on some new designs and trying to get its underwear line launched. You can find my t-shirts on sale on my website and on South Beach at Funky Sexy Couture. Then I am working on Aqua Girl, Space’s Anniversary, Sizzle Miami, White Fort Lauderdale, Mark Baker Events, Toronto Pride, New Mexico Pride, 4th of July, and Amsterdam Pride… and that’s just the next three months! As you can see, I’m a Virgo and workaholic! Anything else you would like Wire readers to know? I have my resident gig once a month at the Manor in Fort Lauderdale. Check out my website www.kiddmadonny. com for upcoming gigs and my online store. You can find me on facebook as DJ Kidd Madonny and follow me on twitter with kiddmadonny.

Taking place from May 11-15, 2011 Aqua Girl continues to attract women from all over the country, the Americas, and around the globe. The week continues to grow year by year with newly added events that continue to enhance its wide appeal. With 14 cultural events and parties to satisfy an array of tastes, this year won’t disappoint. Now celebrating its twelfth year, 100 percent of the proceeds of this dynamic week benefit the Aqua Foundation for Women, the not-for-profit-foundation whose primary mission is to serve as a funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality in South Florida through grants, scholarships, and initiatives. Every woman who attends gets to enjoy herself and do some good; helping her community by just showing up

By Thomas Barker Photo By: eyesonyouportraits.com and buying her ticket. Aqua Girl organizers and their team of committed volunteers have created what is recognized worldwide as one of the hottest women’s festivals in the country to date. I recently caught up with Liza Santana, the founder of the Creativas Group and the PR manager for the Aqua Foundation to get the inside scoop on all the Aqua Girl Weekend festivities. Check out what she had to say: How did Aqua Girl come about? Aqua Girl traces its beginnings to 1999 when Alison Burgos and NYC’s legendary women’s producer, Shescape, gathered a committee of committed and empowered women from around South Florida to produce an exciting one-off event to benefit breast cancer. The event, Sweet Charity, was a dynamic event bringing together close to 1000 women and raising over $15,000 for two local-based breast cancer organizations, Gilda’s Club and Cancer Link. In the year 2000, Sweet Charity grew into an entire weekend of parties and events and Aqua Girl was born. The goal was to provide a spectacular and national fundraising weekend celebrating women and the myriad of issues that affect them. Women came to Miami from all over the map, and the first year of this dynamic weekend of events was hugely successful. It’s hard to believe that Aqua Girl will be celebrating more than a decade of fabulous parties for women who love women. How has Aqua Girl evolved over the years? Each year the event grows, as new elements and events are added based on the market. From cultural events to more dance driven parties, the Aqua Girl team, including

12 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

WIRE FEATURE: 12TH ANNUAL AQUA GIRL WEEKEND IS HERE! the board and steering committee, create the activities based on a list of factors. The goal: to make a large group of women with different tastes happy.

You have some pretty great DJs. How do you go about picking the DJs for your events?

Why do you think Aqua Girl is so important for the community?

The DJs are picked based on listening to the market. The team pays attention to who is popular, in demand, and those who are great supporters of the cause. These are all parties and events with a huge purpose. Thus the talent is carefully picked!

It’s important on many levels. First and foremost, 100 percent of the proceeds of this dynamic week benefit a huge cause. Every woman who attends gets to enjoy herself and do some good, helping her community by just showing up and buying her ticket. Aqua Girl organizers and their team of committed volunteers have created what is recognized worldwide as one of the hottest women’s festivals in the country to date. Every woman who participates is helping empower. It’s a great thing. Over the years, the funds from Aqua Girl have led to the development of the Women’s Aqua Foundation. What is the purpose of this foundation? The Aqua Foundation for Women is a not-for-profitfoundation whose primary mission is to serve as a funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality organizations in South Florida through grants, scholarships, and initiatives. Why is it important to have an organization that is solely dedicated to the LBT community? There are hundreds and thousands of organizations out there, each with a different plight. It’s no secret that we live in a world where prejudice is still out there and many challenges that do not allow LBT community members to live their lives in society as they would wish. It’s a daily fight to educate and empower. We have made a lot of positive strides but we are not 100 percent there yet. That’s why it’s so important for us to create opportunities that are celebrations of our community, to show the world who and what we are about. Hopefully it will spark enough change so that all of these obstacles will be a part of our past. What is going to make this year’s Aqua Girl Weekend different from past Aqua Girl events? Aqua Girl continues to attract women from all over the globe. How can it not? This year, it’s increased to a whopping 14 cultural events and unique parties. Supporters can enjoy some of the reoccurring events, but the new elements will include visuals and new talent, such as Kidd Madonny spinning at the Aqua Tea.

Any special entertainers we should be excited about? Suzanne Westenhoefer is a great one. We are so excited to have her perform. Everyone loves to laugh, and they will be laughing when she hits the stage. The Miami Heat Dancers are also back. These ladies get all the attendees of our Saturday pool party revved up with their amazing choreography. Nina Sky, DJ Theresa, DJ Lisa Pittman, the list goes on and on. It’s just going to be incredible! Which event are you most looking forward to? Hard to choose, but the comedy show will be a great one, as well as The Aqua Tea. We love that you have added a Co-Ed event. How did that come about? Again, keeping true to our mission to empower, educate, and create. Here we decided to create a synergy. We are all one community. Why not celebrate as one? Where does the money raised during Aqua Girl Weekend go? Its goes to serve as a funding source for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality in South Florida through grants. Led by a phenomenal group of professionals and a dynamic board of directors, this is a year round job. One of the most spectacular elements of what the Aqua Foundation does is to change the lives of young members in our community. Serving adults is always part of the plan, but being able to “change tomorrow” through our young people is a big deal for the team, which is why the scholarship program alone is so important, yet one of the many different areas the team has to focus on. How can people get more information on Aqua Girl Weekend or the Aqua Foundation? They can find us on Facebook under Aqua Girl or Aqua Foundation or simply go to the website: www.aquafoundation.org

You can use this formula: Your feelings + describe the behavior + effect on you This is how an ‘I-message’ sounds: “When I heard that you’d planned a weekend up north, I was confused about why you hadn’t asked me first, so I could be sure to get the time off.” It takes some practice, and you have to stop and think about what you are going to say, but your relationship deserves to be handled with care. • Make a list of your partner’s positive qualities.

Share them with your partner and state why you think each is true. • Ask your partner to do the same for you. • Respect each other’s private space.
