BY THOMAS BARKER

SUMMERFEST IS BACK! It’s official! Summerfest 2011 is back and will take place from Friday, July 22 to July 24, 2011! And you can bet this year’s version of Summerfest is going to be bigger, better, and even more debaucherous than ever! Four years ago, I created Summerfest to fill the void empty weekends in the summer. South Florida just really needed a weekend dance event that the locals and out-oftowners could appreciate and call their own. And beyond all of the fun events, it was also important to create a community element, as there are dozens of local LGBT non-profit organizations that need more ways to raise some much-needed funds to continue doing the important work they do every day.

merfest Pool Party has grown to include a variety of ancillary events – each one catering to a different demographic of our community. This year, we have chosen the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force as the benefiting organization and production partner on the weekend’s festivities, and have added a couple of new elements! The weekend will begin on Friday, July 22 with the Official Summerfest ’11 Bar Crawl. Revelers will get the chance to walk, crawl, and run to each of South Beach’s seven-day-a-week gay bars to snag some complimentary vodka cocktails with their bar crawl ticket and enjoy fabulous entertainment all night long.

The first year started off quite small with only a couple of events at various high-end venues in South Beach; however, the highlight of the weekend was certainly the official Summerfest Pool Party, which took place at the rooftop pool of the super swanky Hotel Victor.

On Saturday, the day will begin with the main event, The Summerfest Pool Party. Beginning at 1 p.m. Summerfest attendees will party poolside at the uber-exclusive Shoreclub, and a select few will get to party at the Shoreclub’s private beach house, which will be turned into the Summerfest ’11 VIP area. Of course, the Summefest Pool Party wouldn’t be complete without a couple of free vodka drinks with the purchase of a ticket. We know how to get the party started!

Hundreds of nearly naked guys and girls, looking to let out some summer steam, while dancing poolside to the beats of international DJs at one of the sexiest venues in SoBe, filled the party. Since then, the Sum-

Later that night, Summerfest Pool Party revelers will hit up Lincoln Road’s only gay dance club, Score, for a wild night of entertainment and incredible music by internationally known DJs.

The following day, we’ll recover at one of SoBe’s hottest brunch destinations before heading over to the Palace for the Summerfest Sunday T. Scantily clad guys and girls will fill the Palace to enjoy a stiff cocktail, stiffer guys, and great music. And this is just the tip of the iceberg! Stay tuned to Wire Magazine to get the inside scoop on all things Summefest! In the mean time, here’s a preview of what’s to come!

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO... ROBAINA OR GIMENEZ?

This morning, as I watched President Obama become the first United States president to speak before both chambers of the British Parliament at Westminster Hall. I couldn’t help noting that it reminded me of why I “came to America.” Like so many immigrants before me, I decided to come to the United States in search of better opportunities, liberty, and freedom. This great democracy of ours is the envy of many around the world and a beacon of hope for those who yearn to live in peaceful society whose principles are based on freedom and liberty for all. President Obama reminded the members of the British Parliament, to thunderous applause, that it is because of the United States and Great Britain’s basic principles that it is possible for “the grandson of a Kenyan who served as a cook in the British Army to stand before you as President of the United States.” That is the ultimate tribute to our grand democracy for its ability to overcome the enormous injustices of the past and make it possible for a young Hawaiian African American boy to become the leader of the free world and show everyone around the world that “yes we can!”

NEWS MODERN SOMETIMES PEOPLE SURPRISE YOU Cynicism is a badge of honor worn by most Americans who live in major urban areas. You know the drill. We’ve seen it all, done it all; and we’ve done and seen it in a bigger way than people anywhere else. Most importantly, nothing surprises us and the more unusual a happening, the more likely we are to shrug it off as anticipated, derivative, or otherwise not worth our attention. It’s worse for media people; and the worst for political junkies who also happen to have a lengthy history of political involvement and reporting. We’re definitely supposed to live in a constant state of nonplussed.

of people off by assisting authorities to root out corruption in North Miami. That’s the kind of thing that would make a hero out of a politician in a decent world. In South Florida, though, it only prompted some of the ugliest, most heinous tactics I have ever seen employed in local election politics.

But every once in a while, people will surprise even the most cynical among us -- and occasionally even do so in a good way. When it does happen, it’s only fair to acknowledge it. This year, there have already been a few notable surprises.

Between the upheaval in the county and the North Miami election, you can see why it is sometimes such a delight to be surprised.

I’d like to think that county voters will dismiss most of the bogus ballot items that People going to the polls this week re- are allegedly aimed at reform. For this week, I am not making any predictions at all. All I’ve got to say is that the next Miami-Dade mayor had better hit the ground running -- and running in the same direction as voters, for a change.

WIRE COVER: E! ENTERTAINMENT SHEDS LIGHT ON LGBT SUICIDE

BY THOMAS BARKER PHOTOS COURTESY OF: E! ENTERTAINMENT

With the epidemic of LGBT teen suicide hitting its peak last year, it has been amazing how much awareness has been given to the plight of LGBT teens and their struggle to cope with being “different”. One of the major reasons LGBT teen suicide has been given so much press attention is the number of A-list celebrities, who have “come out” in support of our community, and made it a point to stand with us. Lady Gaga dedicated her album Born This Way to the LGBT community, while Katy Perry’s hit single Firework focused on the hundreds of LGBT teen suicides. And even Christina Aguilera got into the mix by giving a shout out to her LGBT fans in the song GLAM. This Sunday, May 29th at 10:30 p.m. E! Entertainment’s hottest new dance show, The Dance Scene, takes us behind the scenes of a fundraising event for the Trevor Project, an organization dedicated to ending suicide among LGBT youth. During the show, celebrity choreographer, LaurieAnn Gibson discovers this incredible organization and immediately wants to get involved. Luckily, she is given an opportunity to be a part of one of the Trevor Project’s major fundraising events by creating a performance piece and performing alongside her dancers. I was lucky enough to sit down with the gorgeous choreographer, who came from, as she puts it, “nothing” to working with some of the biggest stars in the business. Check out what she had to say: Where are you from and how did you get into the business of choreography? Well, I was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. I took a Greyhound to New York to study at Alvin Ailey while waitressing at 11 o’clock at night. I really just came from nothing. And by nothing I mean a loving mom and a lot of substance, but financially there was no famous name or hook-up or anything. As a kid, I watched Fame and believed I could be Debbie Allen and just hit it, so I did go through a lot of struggle and trials and tribulations. I studied at Alvin Ailey and realized I didn’t want to do concert work that young, so I went to a Mary J Blige audition, met

Puffy, and started to transition into the pop culture scene by doing choreography, music, movies, and that kinda stuff. I started to meet everyone under the sun from Puffy to Mary to Missy to the Jonas Brothers to everybody. When you were dreaming about where you were going to go with your career and what you wanted to do, did you ever think you’d ever reach this level of success? I knew there was something that God had put in my heart as a child, and I think that’s why I know so much. Like even with all my kids, all my babies, all my gay boys, all my gay girls, there’s a place in my heart no matter who or what you are, and everyone has a passion or a dream. And you know you were meant to do

WIRE COVER: E! ENTERTAINMENT SHEDS LIGHT ON LGBT SUICIDE something, but sometimes you just never believe it at the beginning of your journey. So I didn’t know this is how it would be, but I knew there was something pulling me to get to this place. You’ve worked with a ton of people throughout your career. Who were you most excited to work with? I think the only time I’ve had that surreal moment was when I worked with Michael Jackson. I did a video that Spike Lee directed. I worked a lot with Spike Lee in the beginning of my career. He directed a video for Michael that never got released called “They Don’t Care About Us”. It was very controversial. The only other time that I was really excited was when I danced with Janet Jackson at the MTV Awards during a tribute to Michael. It’s funny because as a dancer they were always hating on me, so I never got picked for her tour, and I told her that during rehearsal. So it’s never ever too late and it’s never ever over. And here we are. We are friends now. With all of these different dance shows, there’s a lot of attention now surrounding the world of dance. How has all this attention affected the world of dancing? I think it’s purely a positive thing. Of course, when you see things that wash your art form out or are a mediocre representation, you get upset. But at the end of the day, it’s a chance to build to the next level, to reiterate the fact that choreographers, dancers, and creative directors are valuable marketing tools. We’re more than just getting on an beat and an eight count. We’re artists, we’re stars, we’re brands. We’re the reasons other artists can continue. We are multi-faceted. We are the director. So I think it’s an enormously positive thing. What is the concept of your show and how did it come about? The Dance Scene conceptually is supposed to be about my life as a choreographer, creative director, director as a young female who has transitioned and opened different doors. What does that look like? How does she live? What has she sacrificed? How can I stand as a source of inspiration to anyone out there who has nothing? How do I show them that I’m doing it, which means they can do it too? How do I train my dancers? How do I encourage them to keep moving? How do I build them as brands? It’s really a reality, but a truthful one that lifts the veil and shows people that sometimes you win a trophy, but what happens after you win the trophy? When can we expect to see an episode with hot guys? We’re all waiting! It’s so funny because that’s one of the things I’ve been telling them. I’m like what are you doing? I do this in real life! PLEEEEEASE!!! So I’m like, “listen I’ve got some HOT boys who are THE most amazing dancers on the planet.” And they just never got it. So maybe they will now.

We’re desperate here. We’re waiting! There’s nothing hotter than a sexy guy that knows how to dance. You know what I’m saying? HELL-OOOOO! I understand that this episode is very close to your heart. Tell us what happened with The Trevor Project and how you got involved with that. Jason Sarlanis, who is one of the executives that really opened the door for the show and I love dearly, is very passionate about the Trevor Project. He told me about the foundation and I started to cry because I have seen all of these amazing artists disappear because they feel they have no other option. Jason gave me an opportunity to let my gift of dance be enough to draw awareness to the Trevor Project. That’s when I felt I’d made it. I could just purely use dance to draw awareness and help in a real way. It felt like finally, finally this is what my heart was reaching for my entire life. So I researched the organization and the cause, and it was just traumatizing because there were times when I was really, really low coming up in this business. I felt like no one liked me and I was barely hanging on, and I thought about it. To think that I had my mom and my sister to pull me out of that dark place and to think that humanity is in such a dark place that we can’t help each other out of that place of doubt or fear is crazy to me. It’s the very reason why I feel so passionate about fighting harder. It’s unacceptable to me that the very person that wants to take their life could be the person that’s sent to help your cousin or your daughter. And the more I thought about it, the more I thought this is exactly who I am, and this is the hypocrisy that I would love to change. What can we expect during this episode coming up? Well, it’s conflicted because I also have to deal with Carrington who lost her cousin Amanda to suicide. So with her, I’m like “how can you not find this passion in you when you’re dancing for someone else…” So I finally get to the place where I ask her, “can you just forget about yourself for a second?” I utilized my desire to let her know that it’s not always about you. The piece is called “Can You Hear Me”, and it’s a place of ignorance. We wrap these kids in this ignorance. It’s a beautiful piece and really emotional for me most of all, because it was a moment to shine a light on some of the ignorance. Is there anything else you’d like to add? There’s someone that really cares and the dance world is full of people that dream and are artistic. I call my dancers “dream warriors” for a reason. The piece is called “Can You Hear Me?” and my answer is: Yes, I hear you! So you’re not alone and you really need to be brave. And sometimes you will be the only person in a place of darkness because you were meant to do great things. So whenever you get the feeling that people hate you, know that it’s because you’re so special.

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH WHAT IS A PARAPHILIA? Most people are familiar with the term, fetish, and, in fact, the term has come to be used quite casually in our culture when referring to a particular object that brings excitement or pleasure to an individual either as a part of, or in preparation for, sexual activity. Paraphilias are conditions in which sexual excitement or orgasm is associated with acts, or imagery, that are considered to be unusual within a particular culture. The term paraphilia, derived from Greek roots meaning “alongside” and “love,” replaces the older term, ‘sexual perversion.’ In a paraphilia, the person’s sexual arousal and gratification depend on a fantasy theme of an unusual situation or object that becomes the main focus of the sexual behavior. When a paraphilia revolves around a particular sexual object, it is called a fetish. The essential feature of a paraphilia, according to DSM-IV-TR, is the presence of “recurrent, intense sexually-arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors generally involving… nonhuman objects… the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one’s partner… children or other non-consenting persons,” or a combination of these criteria, for a period of at least six months. The nature of a paraphilia is, for the most part, specific and static (unchanging), and paraphilic behavior tends to be far more common in men than in women. Paraphilias are different from what some people might consider to be ‘normal’ sexual activity, in that paraphilic behaviors cause significant distress or impairment in areas of life functioning. They do not refer to the normal use of sexual fantasy, activity, or objects to enhance sexual excitement or pleasure where there is no distress or impairment. Signs that may point to paraphilic sexual activity include: the inability to resist an impulse for the sexual act, the involvement of non-consenting or under-aged individuals, criminal consequences, resulting sexual dysfunction, and/or interference with healthy social relationships. The following is a list of the most common paraphilias: Exhibitionism (exposure of the genitals) Voyeurism (watching others engage in undressing or sexual activity) Fetishism (use of inanimate objects) Frotteurism (touching or rubbing up against a non-consenting person) Pedophilia (sexual focus on prepubescent children) Transvestic Fetishism (cross-dressing) Sexual Masochism (being humiliated or made to suffer) Sexual Sadism (inflicting of humiliation or suffering on another) It is common for a paraphiliac to have more than one paraphilia. Paraphilias often result in a variety of associated problems, such as depression, shame, guilt, isolation, and impairment in social and sexual relationships. A paraphilia can, and frequently does, become highly idiosyncratic and ritualized. Paraphiliacs may select an occupation, or develop a hobby or volunteer work, that puts them in contact with the desired erotic stimuli (i.e., selling shoes or underwear in fetishism, or working in a gym locker room in voyeurism). Other coexistent problems may be substance abuse, intimacy problems, and personality disturbances, especially emotional immaturity. Additionally, there may be sexual dysfunctions. Erectile dysfunction and an inability to ejaculate may be common in attempts at sexual activity without the paraphiliac theme. Difficulty ejaculating is often a result of edging, a phenomenon frequently associated with excessive, prolonged use of pornography. Paraphilias may be mild, moderate, or severe in nature. An individual with mild paraphilia is distressed by the recurrent paraphiliac urges but hasn’t acted on them; the moderate type has occasionally acted on the paraphilic urge; and a severe paraphiliac has repeatedly acted on the urges and suffers substantial distress as a result. My next column will focus on the hypothesized causes of paraphilia, and the different types of treatment available. Dr. Gregg A.
