TWO LEGENDARY ANNIVERSARIES Take a moment to think about the craziest, most outlandish night you’ve ever had at a party and combine that with the most colorful people you’ve ever met in your life and what you’ll soon realize is that you are sitting in the middle of South Beach’s wildest, most scandalous party, Back Door Bamby. Believe it or not, it has been 15 years since Back Door Bamby first opened its back door at Lua off of Espanola Way. From the launch to today, the party has definitely had its fair share of locations. After six fantastic years at Crobar, one of the most legendary parties in South Beach, it had to find a new home. After making a few appearances here and there, the darkest diva of nightlife finally made herself at home across the bay at one of Miami’s hottest nightspots, The Vagabond. This week, we decided to dedicate our cover story to the dark, seedy, and outlandish weekly party that regularly brings together the glamorous, trendy, freaky, ambiguous, and just any and every type of person you can imagine. As the brainchild of local party promoter, Carmel Ophir, Back Door Bamby started off as a ladies night that eventually transformed into a no holds barred party that seemed to take on a personality all its own, break countless barriers, and inspire artists, DJs, and performers to push the limits of their abilities.
On page 12, you will find the cover story in which Carmel provided me with an in depth look at how Back Door Bamby came about, how it has evolved over the years, and what people can expect this Saturday night, as Carmel and the rest of the Bamby gang celebrate 15 years of naughtiness!
of friends she made wherever she worked. She ran away from a very unstable family situation in Boston as soon as she turned 18-years-old. She knew she was gay as a kid and was ostracized by her family and friends throughout the sensitive years of growing up. So once she left, she never looked back and it took her family a year to realize where she was.
On another note, this Sunday the Palace will host a fabulous party in honor of South Beach’s most legendary drag diva, Henrietta, as she will be celebrating 50 years as a Miami Beach resident!
“At age 19 she saw her first drag show. At age 22 she dressed up as a woman for the very first time (other than when she was 10 or 11 and dressed up in her sisters’ clothes!). She won Miss Florida in 1969 singing, not lipsynching, “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever.” Then after her favorite uncle died in the early 80s, she never wore men’s clothes again! Her outfit became permanent!”
If you don’t know Henrietta, and even if you do, check out this blurb from a Wire Magazine cover story a few years back to learn a little more about the fiercest drag diva of our generation:
And we couldn’t be happier to have captured the life of such an amazing person in the pages of Wire Magazine over the course of her time here in Miami Beach.
“Everyone on South Beach knows famed South Beach Diva Henrietta. She’s the gay guy who is always dressed in drag – whether she’s grabbing a quick bite to eat, taking a bus or taxi to one of her house cleaning jobs, or having a nightcap at TWIST. “And nothing she wears when she dresses like a woman is fake. Her chinchilla outfit, lace or silk gowns, large-carat diamond rings, gold bracelets – they’re all real, just as real as Henrietta.
We look forward to toasting to Henrietta this Sunday at The Palace!
Congratulations Henrietta!

MIAMI BEACH NEEDS TO BECOME A DIFFERENT KIND OF WAR ZONE In his open letter to Miami Beach Mayor Matti Herrera Bower, the Miami Beach Commission, and concerned citizens about Memorial Day Urban Weekend Herb Sosa demanded an end to Urban Weekend for all its ill effects on the city and the residents of the Beach. Herb stated, “It shows our city as nothing short of a warzone – Filthy streets, a drive by shooting, multiple cars crashed in the process, and total chaos in the streets. This is unacceptable and must be controlled before we totally lose our city, tourism & residents.” There is another alternative and Miami Beach could be a different kind of “war zone” during Memorial Day Weekend. It would just take some planning and leadership from city government, local businesses, and city residents. It will also require everyone to actually remember what Memorial Day is about.

New York City’s hottest burger restaurant will open doors on Miami’s bustling Lincoln Road on the prime corner of Lincoln and Drexel Avenue on Thursday, June 16, 2011. The much-anticipated import will open for dinner seven days a week initially; lunch and weekend brunch will launch shortly thereafter. The 5 Napkin Burger brand is already legendary in New York and Boston as the only upscale restaurant devoted to the art of the hamburger. Miami represents the fifth location for this burger paradise and the first one down South. Executive Chef Andy D’Amico and his 5 Napkin Burger concept are at the forefront of the burger renaissance in America as evidenced by their recent crowning of Best Burger 2010 by AOL’s CityBest survey and Best New Burger at the 2009 Time Out New York Eat Out Awards. The menu at the Miami location stays the same, with the stars - of course - being the burgers. The signature is 10 oz of fresh ground chuck topped with rosemary aioli, caramelized onions and melted gruyere on a soft white roll. The full burger lineup includes the all-American Bacon Cheddar, Italian Turkey, Veggie, Lamb, Tuna, Inside Out, and the guilt-free Burger Salad. While the burgers may be the headliners, the diverse menu of expertly prepared American classics will entice Miami foodies to come back nightly. 5 Napkin is the rare burger restaurant where vegetarians and carnivores are equally at home. Temptations include expertly prepared sushi maki rolls, Matzo Ball Soup, Steak Frites, and Fish & Chips. The 5 Napkin beverage programs showcases a global selection of 60 wines and 80 beers, 10 signature cocktails, 40 bourbons and a host of decadent milk shakes and floats. This exciting new location seats 150 inside and 100 outside, with décor that can be best described as “butcher shop chic,” featuring white tile walls and meat hooks snaking across the ceiling, which is also dotted with hanging filament bulbs. Whimsical chalk murals are sprawled out over giant chalkboards, and the black leather booths and dark wood bar are sure to attract the most discriminating patrons. The 5th and only South Florida location of 5 Napkin Burger is located at 455 Lincoln Road on Miami Beach. The restaurant will be open from 11:30 a.m. daily until midnight Sundays through Wednesdays and until 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. 8 | wire magazine | follow wire on facebook & twitter: visit www.wireweekly.com & click on the icons

Heralded as one of the naughtiest parties in town, Back Door Bamby has been the diamond darling of South Beach since the town first laid eyes on her 15 years ago. Every Monday night, the curious and the brave got a healthy dose of some electro-fied, funkified, sexy, house music with a rock and roll attitude. Provocative and unorthodox, this steamy siren earned her notorious reputation by remaining true to the ethic that anything and everything goes. Back Door Bamby was born in the spring of 1996. The party was intended to be a playground for the locals, whose individual eccentricities lent so much color and flavor to Miami’s incredible underground club scene. Everyone that worked the scene became like a family and Back Door welcomed them with open arms: locals, retailers, salons, restaurants... gay, straight, black, white... rockers, rastas, models, suits’, freaks, geeks, chic, and the meek, and, of course, the kings and queens working that trashy drag! Starting at Club Lua owned by George Nunez, with the undisputed king of doormen, Gilbert Stafford working the ropes, Bamby immediately became the home for industry types and local scenesters alike. Soon, they hit capacity of the small Lua spot, and moved on to the legendary Liquid,
where the party gained even more notoriety, not only in Miami, but all over the world as well. Continuously reinventing itself, Bamby moved herself and her motley crew of locals, models, industry-types, and celebrities to other venues on Miami Beach, including the groundbreaking Groove Jet, the intimate Blue, the plush KGB club on the 600 block, before finally settling in at the trendsetting Crobar nightclub for an impressive six year run. Today, the dirty girl holds court every Saturday night across the bridge in Miami’s haven for bohemians, night-dwellers, artists, musicians, poets and lovers - The Vagabond. This Saturday night, SoBe’s most infamous party girl will celebrate 15 years of scandalous debauchery at The Vagabond with one hell of a party. As always, Carmel Ophir is planning a fabulous shindig that is set to be freaky, sexy, dirty, and downright weird. We caught up with local party man, Carmel, to get the inside scoop on what’s taking place this weekend.

Check out what he had to say: Where are you from? I’ve lived in Miami since 1990, grew up in New York City, and lived in Israel for several years as a young lad. When did you begin promoting and what inspired you to do this as a career? I guess promotions started by accident. While in college, I used to pass out fliers to clubs, on the streets, walking the sand on South Beach... pretty much anywhere and everywhere. Remember, there wasn’t any email or social media. It was all done hand-to-hand. There was something a bit more personal about it then. It was a great way to meet people, and I was kinda shy, so handing out a flier to a girl on the sand was an innocent way to talk to her. Also, being that I was in college, money was tight, so this gave me all access to the clubs for free. Moving up through various jobs in restaurants, hotels, bars, and clubs, I was fascinated by the relationship of music, energy, and creativity... the soul and substance that brought so many people together in social settings that in the “ordinary world” would never happen. I found myself curating music in every job environment I had. Then found myself promoting those various vibes and occasions. Then found myself creating themes of music and entertainment, and so on. Eventually I was in management positions of marketing, entertainment, music director/talent buyer, etc. The evolution was basically organic.
How did you come up with the concept of Back Door Bamby? I suppose we’d need to go back to before Back Door Bamby actually started. In the early 90s there was a club called Groove Jet in South Beach. I was the marketing and music director, and also did special weekly events like the Sunday Goth/Alternative party, “The Church”. We had a Thursday Ladies Night called ‘Groove Girl’ that was really quite boring, so I was tasked with injecting some life into it. As I said earlier, we didn’t have the luxury of emails or social media. We literally had to use fax machines to get the word out to businesses, concierges, etc. I came up with the idea to personify the night by creating a character called G.G. (GrooveGirl). We developed a storyline... a mini soap opera if you will, of her adventures on South Beach...shopping, music, boys/girls, scandals, experimentation, etc. All told in weekly individual chapters that were, yes, faxed out to the masses. It was a hit because it revolved around the club, the local stores, brands, and the local SoBe celebrities and personalities. Business went up, and everyone wanted to know what trouble G.G. was gonna get into each week at Groove Jet. One of my close friends and co-worker, Mykel Stevens worked the door at “The Church” and was an amazing bartender at the club. He and I always got off on the edgy, naughty, sexy side of the club fantasy thing. We both came from the Northeast, so we shared a lot of the 80s Club Kid Cross-Over scenes. As he was progressing

in the scene himself, he told me he wanted to start a “locals” weekly party on Mondays. I thought it was a great idea since we had nothing to do on Mondays, and all the cool locals were off as well. Based on the personification of a fictional character like G.G. and with the assistance of local artist Attila Lakatoush, DJ GiGi (Yea, I know, what a coincidence), and the late-great Gilbert Stafford, “Bad-Ass Bitch Mondays featuring Back Door Bamby” was born with Mykel Stevens at the helm. The party was a great success for over a year, but the tides turned and after several attempts at various locations, the party eventually ended. After a few months of hiatus, Mykel and I were hanging out, just bumming around, and we got into one of our famous ‘creative’ sessions... lots of laughs... lots of “what do you think of this?”, “what if we did that”, and “can you imagine what the people would say?” I suggested that Bamby be resurrected and we give that Vixen the ‘Love Injection that the Doctor Ordered’. And that my friends is a small chapter of the early years.... What is the concept of Back Door Bamby? If you ask the artist Attila Lakatoush what he thought of when he first drew her, he is quoted as saying “She was a character I drew in college comic books. Her name was Asesina Suzanna, and she was a power dike assassin. She was Hot!” He was also inspired by the incredibly beautiful Nicole Soden who, to this day, graces us with a living fantasy version of Bamby. The best part of Back Door Bamby is the fact the many people have their own concept of what she is. Is she even a she? Is she a he? What’s with the Back Door? Is she/he gay or straight? Well... the fact is that there’s
a little bit of Bamby in all of us. She’s House Music with a Rock n Roll attitude. She’s dangerous, but worth the risk. She’s a badass bitch who takes no prisoners, shows no mercy, but will seduce you with all the things your fantasies are made of. In a dark alley, you’ll either run for cover or want to join her gang of misfits. She never enters through the front door, preferring the road less traveled through the back door. Like the great Blues legend Howlin’ Wolf sang, “The Men Don’t Know, But The Little Girls Understand... I’m a Back Door Man”
good cleansing. When I opened The Vagabond in March of 2008, there were pockets of people asking when she’ll be coming back, if she was alive. There were sightings...tabloid headlines... rumors galore... And then… the Reunion Party!
Here’s a little trivia: A Back Door Man is someone who’s having an adulterous affair. When the husband comes home, he’s gotta sneak out the back door!
Bamby was making a comeback, and this time she wanted more! Back Door Bamby’s Menage a Trois debuted in May 2008 to roaring success. After a few weeks, her fans wouldn’t let her go back into retirement and so she agreed to host Saturday nights at The Vagabond. She liked the gritty neighborhood, the bohemian scene, the sense of danger, and most of all the mixed crowds without any pretension.
Why do you think it has been a success all these years?
How does The Vagabond lend itself to the Bamby experience?
I guess you’d have to ask the audience. Without their support and longing for more, Bamby would steal away in the dark of night. I suppose one of the reasons for its longevity and success is that it continues to evolve and change, but still rings true to its essence of ‘anything goes’ attitude. There is no separation or segregation of ages, crowds, or scenes. Music and theatrics are paramount. Mystery and teasing appeals to most people.
Although Bamby tends to enjoy hosting the main room, or her ‘Playpen’ as she likes to call it, The Vagabond has three areas to play in. The main room is where the theatrics, shows, burlesque, etc. take place. In the rest of the club, Bamby takes advantage of the unsuspecting audience and playfully, mischievously interacts with them, leaving them wondering, “what’s going on here? I think I like it!”
You have taken Back Door Bamby and moved it to The Vagabond. Why is that?
How do you think the party has evolved over the years?
By 2007, it was obvious that South Beach wasn’t the South Beach of 1996. The audience had changed. The scene had changed. We seemed to have lost a relatedness to what it was turning into, and vice versa. Bamby needed to take a long-overdue vacation. The girl was burned out and needed a break! After bidding Bamby a Bon Voyage party that spring, everyone went their separate ways. I guess we all needed some detoxing and a
I guess what’s evolved most is that there isn’t a constant need anymore by the audience or press/media to try and label what the party is. Too many times people asked if it was gay, straight, wanna-be, cabaret, fetish, deviant, house music, rock n roll, electro, drag, tranny, etc. etc. etc. Always, they wanted a clarification. Well, I think that we’ve got a hung jury on that one (no pun intended). Ladies and gentlemen, it’s all and none of

Bamby has played host to a plethora of DJs, bands, performance artists, and eclectic entertainers. Some of the most prolific DJs have made Bamby their mistress: Little Louie Vega, John Digweed, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Josh Wink, Erick Morillo, Larry Tee, Jellybean Benitez, just to name a few. Live acts such as King Khan and the Shrines, W.I.T, Parallels, Junior Boys, and the infamous Mini-Kiss have graced Bamby’s stage. Legendary performance artists, such as Joey Arias, Raven-O and Amanda Lepour, have brought the wild, the mysterious, and sometimes disturbing side of Bamby to her audience. I think one of the best events Bamby had was hosting Patricia Fields’ launch of her magazine Hotel Venus. It was a stratospheric journey of mass proportions. I think I’m still in recovery I understand you will be hosting the 15-year anniversary of Back Door Bamby. What can people expect at this party? As is always the case, Bamby keeps her agenda close to the vest (or in her case, close to the chest). So sorry, but you’ll just have to come to the party to experience it. Any interesting entertainers we should be looking out for? Prepare yourselves for this momentous milestone, Bamby has invited some very distinctive company to indulge in the celebration, including the pin-up girl meets super hero meets metals shop hijinks of Grinder Girl, the weirdos from the cosmos, The Alienation, and the fame monster in the mini-flesh Mini-Gaga! In the Garden you’ll encounter the ‘Dos Equis Expedition’ - a band of Indiana Jones and exotic tribal princesses in six-wheeled adventure vehicles. Bamby and her minions will descend upon The Vagabond with the help of her familiar cult of deviants, provocateurs, and misfits like the voracious and iconoclastic director Octavio Campos, the renowned conceptual and performance artist Natasha Tsakos, and the legendary seductress Nicole Soden... And of course stalking you as their prey from room to room, you’ll find The Vagabond’s crew of naughty bandits: Adora, Andy Wardobe, Jose ‘Negro’ Ramirez, Charles Meads, Blaze, and Pamolina! Slaying the three dance floors will be the musical stylings of resident DJs: Brad Strickland, Eyan Evans, Carmel Ophir (me), Ess & Emm, A-Train, and Wasabi. What’s in the future for Back Door Bamby and Carmel? Let’s see.... Well, now that the Bin-Laden problem has been taken care of, Bamby can take it easy a bit and focus on some of the projects that have been on the shelf. A Cartoon Strip, television series, major-motion picture, international tour, opening for the Rolling Stones 50th anniversary tour... pretty much complete and total world domination.
