EDITOR IN CHIEF’S NOTE HE DIDN'T HAVE TO DIE he assassination of Chris Stevens, our U.S. Ambassador to Libya, and 3 other members of the diplomatic staff was a stark reminder that there are extremists in the Arab world that still hate the United States and want to do us harm. The policy of appeasement in the Middle East led to disastrous results during the Carter administration, and the recent attacks on several of our U.S. embassies in the Arab world showed that we cannot rely on our “friends and allies” to protect us just because we send them billions of dollars in foreign aid. We need to protect ourselves! We also need to wake up to the fact that showing strength and resolve is a must in that part of the world. Showing weakness and being apologetic will never work because those who wish us harm are our enemies and believe in the destruction of both the United States and Israel. These enemies will not relent until they achieve their objective or we defeat them. Just like Hitler and other previous nemeses, they are enemies of the United States that cannot be appeased, so it is time that we wake up to this reality. The death of Ambassador Stevens proves that playing nice sometimes just doesn't work. We also don't have the luxury of disengaging from the Middle East because September 11, 2001 showed that our enemies will reach across the vast oceans of the world to murder thousands of Americans in our own backyard. Imagine a world where Iran has nuclear weapons and is willing to provide materials for a dirty bomb to an Islamic extremist group such as al-Qaeda, so they can attack a major U.S. city with an explosive device that would cause more murder, mayhem, and destruction than 9/11. Anyone who thinks that is an impossibility is not facing reality. 9/11 happened because we did not expect such an attack on U.S. soil. Ambassador Stevens died alone in a dark room because someone in the chain of command did not expect that such an attack on our Libyan consulate could happen on 9/11 2012. Otherwise, our Ambassador to Libya would have been better protected and his security team better armed to repel such an attack. As we approach the upcoming presidential election, it is clear that many of the issues our country is facing are very complex and difficult to resolve. Yes, the economy is, arguably, the most important issue. However, we also have to keep in mind that we live in a very unsafe world where our enemies never stop thinking about how to attack us abroad and at home. The people of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu understand the risk of having a nuclear Iran where Ahmadinejad and the mullas can go from threatening the destruction of Israel to having the real capability to actually use nuclear weapons to destroy Israel and attack the United States. The history of the world is full of irrational madmen who have used their armies and weapons to attack other nations. Adolf Hitler was appeased and not taken seriously in the beginning. This allowed Hitler and his general staff to develop Germany into a military superpower that conquered most of Europe and developed an alliance with Japan that threatened the existence of the United States. We live in a dangerous world, and the dangers go beyond a weak economy and too much debt. Our nation must remain strong militarily so we can defend ourselves at home and abroad – but we need to fix our economy and lower our debt so we can continue investing in our security! his much anticipated film arrives about as half-baked as a roadside peach pie. You have to admire the film's craftsmanship and acting, but it fails to rise above its aimless and overlong length, and ultimately becomes an uneasy mix of backwoods “aw shucks” and Prohibition-era gangster cool. I don’t know why I expected more from the director of 2009’s oppressive, unrelenting, boring, and depressing film The Road. The same thing that happened there happens here, great performances all around, but lacking as a satisfying tale. Here’s the storyline: Set in 1931 Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, the three Bondurant brothers run a bootlegging operation up in the mountains. Crooked Special Deputy Charles Rakes (Pearce) is after a share of the brothers' profits. Compounding the brothers’ problems, the local competition is elbowing in on their activities, they want part of the brothers’ local monopoly. When oldest brother Forrest (Hardy) is wounded, tension with Rakes escalates into all out war. While all this is going on, Jack (LaBeouf), initially the timid younger brother, must prove his worth against gangster Floyd Banner's (Oldman) mob, while attempting to woo the preacher's daughter, Bertha (Mia
Wasikowska). It’s all based on the truelife story of the three brothers, as written by family member Matt Bondurant. I’m a LaBeouf fan and I like watching what he does on film. Here he gives a mature well-crafted performance that has a steady metered growth throughout the tale, it’s painful to watch, but fun, just like real life. However, it’s actually Tom Hardy playing older brother, Forest, in a role loosely reminiscent of Warren Beatty in Bonnie & Clyde, who comes off as the most interesting character; well meaning and protective, but scary dangerous and completely indestructible. Kudos also go to Jessica Chastain who brings a beautifully strong but vulnerable presence to her role. Unfortunately, Gary Oldman, the best bad guy on film today, is totally underused, and Guy Pearce’s performance is so over the top, he becomes nothing more than cartoon. The film work is really beautiful here, recreating its rural setting during the days of Prohibition perfectly, but be warned the action comes quick and as compelling as it is, it’s nothing less than gruesome. More or less I see the film as average, if you like this kind of tale head to the theaters, if not, it’ll be out on disk soon, catch it there.

TYRONE WELLS ave you ever been watching your favorite show and suddenly, right at the best part, the most amazing song starts to play? Well, chances are you were probably hearing one of many tracks from singer/songwriter Tyrone Wells. Tyrone’s songs have been featured in over a dozen TV shows like Scrubs, Grey’s Anatomy and The Vampire Diaries as well as some major films. With catchy hooks, brilliant story telling and a flair for pulling on heartstrings, it’s no surprise he’s one of the most sought-after voices on television. It was during one of my guilty pleasures that I got my first earful of Wells. Thanks to my trusty Shazam I was able to track down the song and do some digging. Turns out the obscure artist has been around for a while, adding eight releases to his resume since he began his solo career in 2000. Things really took off after his second full-length album Remain dropped. “Half of the album was done in London and the other half completed here in the states,” he explains on his website, “I didn’t know what kind of record I was going to make before I got to London, but something just seemed to click while I was there that really defined what I wanted to do.” While working on the breakthrough album, the Spokane, Washington export got to collaborate with some of the biggest names in pop-rock like songwriter/ producer Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall), Iain Archer (Snow Patrol co-writ-
er), Tim Myers (formerly of OneRepublic), David Hodges (formerly of Evanescence) and Matt Scannell of Vertical Horizon. The first single, "More," reached #13 on the Triple A radio charts while his second single "Sink or Swim" was featured on Grey's Anatomy that same year. With his latest full-length album, Where We Meet, Wells keeps the hits coming starting with the upbeat debut single “Freedom”. The album is also a celebration of Wells’ newfound independence from his former record label. “I didn’t feel like they were capitalizing on the momentum that I had.” He admits, “So I wrote this long letter to my manager that I wanted to part ways with the label. The next morning, my manager told me that the label actually just ended the relationship. Talk about serendipity! After that, I didn’t have to worry about anyone else’s timelines and concerns. I could just focus on making a great record.” Looks like his focus paid off. Where We Meet features a perfect balance of acoustic ballads and pop-rock anthems all smothered in Wells’ signature hooks and relatable themes. “I’m not in music so I can get rich,” he claims. “The aim is to make great music that I can stand by. I’m doing what I love and if my art resonates with other people, I’m happy. I love it when someone tells me that my music is the soundtrack to their life. I hope I can continue to provide that.”

SUSHISAMBA'S SCRUMPTIOUS MIAMI SPICE LUNCH Images Credit: Rafa Carvajal
USHISAMBA has delicious food and cocktails, a fun ambiance and a great location on Lincoln Road. It also usually has a scrumptious Miami Spice menu this time of the year for lunch and for dinner. I was reminded that I should stop by and enjoy SUSHISAMBA's Miami Spice when I had a delectable Nina Fresa cocktail with friends at the Las Vegas Strip SUSHISAMBA in The Shoppes at The Palazzo, during my recent Fashion's Night Out in Sin City.
ATLANTIC SALMON A LA PLANCHA
So on Monday I tasted the SUSHISAMBA Spice lunch menu and enjoyed a delightful meal that I will not soon forget. From the moment Jesse Spencer and I sat down for lunch, our waiter Jaago made us feel right at home. He was also very helpful in assisting us with our choices for lunch – no easy task given the great selection on their Spice menu. The unique blend of Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian cuisine that characterizes SUSHISAMBA was well represented in the Spice choices!
SWEET CORN KAKIAGE
SAMBA SUSHI PLATE
MOCHI FILLED WITH ICE CREAM
SUSHISAMBA's lunch menu certainly pays homage to the three distinct cultures that came together in the 20th century when thousands of Japanese immigrants came to South America in search of fertile soil to cultivate coffee plantations and find their fortune. This lead to the emergence of a bustling integration of Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cultures and cuisine that flourished in cities such as Lima, Peru and São Paulo, Brazil, and now delights diners around the world – including the recently inaugurated SUSHISAMBA London, located on the 38th and 39th floors of the City’s newest skyscraper, the Heron Tower. For our 1st course we had a Sweet Corn Kakiage with black truffle alioli, shichimi, and lime, and Feijoada Pastels filled with braised beef shank, chorizo, black bean purée, and pork belly. Both of them were excellent and had wonderful textures and flavors. We followed that with the Atlantic Salmon a la Plancha with wasabi crema, ginger soy, and radish salad – which the chef prepared medium SUSHISAMBA Dromo, 600 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139 7 | wire magazine | issue #38, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter
FEIJOADA PASTELS to perfection – and a Samba Sushi Plate: a sushi assortment and ezo roll with soymarinated salmon, asparagus, sesame, tempura flake, and wasabi mayo. I also loved the sushi! Then for our dessert we both settled on the Mochi – four yummy, soft Japanese rice cakes, each filled with a delectable ice cream flavor. We also absolutely loved SUSHISAMBA's refreshing ice tea with a little mint! Make sure you take advantage of Miami Spice through the end of September and stop by SUSHISAMBA for lunch or dinner.

eason is back! It's hard to believe that this year's Broadway Across America season is right around the corner. Rock of Ages will make its Miami premiere October 9 – 14 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. You may have seen Tom Cruise play aspiring rocker Drew Boley in the movie version of Rock of Ages, but there is nothing like seeing it live on stage as a Broadway production. I saw Rock of Ages last year at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and can't wait to see it again in Miami at the Arsht Center. I love this show for its energy, uplifting story, and fantastic rock music.

esting people. I made some of my best lifelong friends there while learning a lot, training a lot, and playing a lot. Because I was getting to work on my craft every day I picked up a bunch of techniques and ways of looking at things that I still use to this day. My high school years are probably when I grew the most as an artist and as a person, and NWSA had a huge hand in that. It wasn't perfect, but I look back at that time period with nothing but the most loving, fondest regards. Why did you decide to train with the world’s largest children circus at French Woods Festival when you were growing up? Why wouldn't I have? Dangling upside down from a rope while holding a girl 20 feet in midair? Doesn't every young boy want to do that? Who is your greatest inspiration and why? A lot of people inspire me… huge icons like Will Rogers and Michael Jackson, role models of mine like David Phelps and Drew Sarich, great teachers I've had in my life, and friends of mine who do great things; but probably my biggest inspiration are my parents. As corny as that sounds, they're such hard working, good, loving people, and I owe every bit of my life to them – literally.

How does it feel for a Miami boy to return to his hometown as the lead role in a major Broadway show and perform at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts? Can't wait. If I know anything about Miami, it's that it knows how to party – some of the loudest, craziest people on the planet. We're gonna make some noise at that Arsht Center. Just wait! How do you relate to Drew? How are you different?

I’m very similar to Drew in a lot of ways. He's a 23 year old trying to be a rockstar. Ummm... I was in New York just a couple months ago busing tables with big hopes and dreams just like Drew, and just like Drew, things are coming together for me. Unlike me though, Drew is very hesitant and lacks the confidence to pursue his dreams or even talk to women. He LOVES girls, but lacks the social savoir-faire to handle himself in romantic situations – big words for a rock guy, huh? The hesitancy trait he's got going is A TON of fun to play. He's just always kinda bumbling around, tripping over shit, saying the wrong things. By the end of the show though, in order to get the girl, Drew grows to be the confident quintessential rock star that we fall in love with.

How does the Broadway show compare to the film? Is the movie helping draw attendance to the shows? It doesn't. They're both really different things. Although they share a similar plot, characters, and songs, just about EVERYTHING else is different. They're incomparably different experiences. Like the difference between seeing Bon Jovi in concert live and seeing a documentary about Bon Jovi. They’re both great, but totally different. Is the movie helping draw attendance? Not sure. I'll ask around. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Alive. I haven't really thought much past that… What do you enjoy the most about performing in a Broadway show? Getting to do what I do best every night – entertain. For thousands of people across the country, and I get paid!
Be smart - be your #1 critic, but also your #1 fan. Set goals, take risks. Work hard, but never stop having fun. Most importantly, don't ever stop believing in yourself. Anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine’s readers about yourself or the show? Yes. About ME: Go to Domscott.com! Friend me on Facebook! Follow me on Twitter! all tends to put a bit of a damper on gay events around the world; it isn’t until Halloween (in the USA) and snow (anywhere with a mountain) swing through that things begin to pick up again. Unless you’re a Belgian, in which case it’s a matter of national pride to keep the party going 24/7/365. It’s called “La Demence,” and if there is anything in the world such as circuit party tradition, this is it. Actually a regularly occurring bash whose bass notes habitually shake the city of Brussels to its knees (and a few Brusselaars to their knees, but that’s the height they want to be at), La Demence usually takes place on a Friday or the day before a bank holiday. This year, however, is the 23rd anniversary of the event, and officials decided to make the one on September 28th a party for the ages, and Brussels is hard to beat as the perfect location, and this is aside from the fact Belgians are almost always horny (they gotta sleep at one point). Close proximity to France, the UK, Germany, Luxemburg, and the Netherlands makes La Demence one of the most multilingual (pun intended) parties in Europe, and Brussels’ status as an international city — it’s not only the capital of Belgium, but the capital of the European Union — means that from far afield come the leather boys, fashion victims, muscle queens, drags queens, cubs, and daddies of the Mediterranean and the Americas to add their two cents, or whatever, as well. Oh, and there is no dress code. Which is a good thing to know. Circuit boys will instantly know the venue: Three rooms jam-packed with techno and house, Fuse (capacity: around 2000) is one of the best-known clubs in the country and Europe beyond. Fourteen DJs are on deck representing Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania, France, Germany, the UK, Spain, and Italy – will be blasting out the latest tracks, but don’t think that it’s just for the music the boys come flying in. Several smaller rooms allow for a more, um, “intimate” physical activity that may not necessarily be so directly attained in a straightforward dance space. erving as a funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual and transgender wellness and equality, the Aqua Foundation for Women goes above and beyond to ensure their message of “Leading, Building, and Transforming,” is thoroughly executed to further support the young women who just may be the leaders of tomorrow. Utilizing grants, scholarships, and mentors, while identifying the community’s needs, building strategic alliances, and fostering philanthropy, the Aqua Foundation for Women is “dedicated to building tomorrow’s leaders.” Wire Magazine recently spoke with Robin Schwartz, Executive Director of AFW to gather further insight about the mission of the foundation, as well as exciting details about the upcoming Aqua Affair on September 29. KEN'S QUICK TIPS BY KEN HUNT
10 TIPS TO FALL INTO FITNESS - PART 2 ast week I brought you part one of my 10 workout and nutrition guidelines to ensure you fall into fitness and reach your goals. Here is part two. 5) FOCUS ON WHAT YOU SHOULD BE EATING INSTEAD OF WHAT YOU SHOULDN'T Ensure you consume five vegetable and three fruit servings every day. Fruits and vegetables are high in nutrients and water content and low in fat and calories. It's much more difficult to overeat when your diet consists largely of fruits and vegetables. If you fill up on your fruits and veggies, you're going to have less room for nutrient-poor foods. 6) SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Practice the 80:20 rule. You can't expect to be perfect for the rest of your life, and setting these types of high expectations will set you up for failure and feelings of inadequacy. Instead of saying, "I'm never going to eat pizza again," decide that you'll eat it only once per week. Instead of determining that you're going to eat perfectly seven days a week, decide that you'll eat in a healthy way five days a week and then allow for a few indulgences on the other two days. This is much more realistic and is something that you can adhere to for the rest of your life. 7) LIMIT YOUR ALCOHOL INTAKE Alcohol poses a number of problems. It is high in calories and lacking nutrient value. Some researchers have also suggested that because alcohol is metabolized in the body first, any food consumed in combination with the alcohol will be more easily converted to fat. Alcohol also reduces your inhibitions, so you may be more inclined to indulge or make poor choices because you aren't able to think clearly or examine the long-term consequences. Instead of drinking every night with dinner, consider limiting it to a few times per week. 8) INCREASE YOUR DAILY ACTIVITY Try to think of ways that you can be more active throughout your day without having to actually exercise. The calories expended from walking a few extra blocks, taking the stairs, or performing errands the old-fashioned way really add up! If we could learn to just be more active throughout the day, we wouldn't have to spend hours in the gym. 9) TRY NOT TO EAT LARGE AMOUNTS OF FOOD PAST 8 P.M. Eating late at night often goes hand-in-hand with high-fat snacks and overeating. Secondly, it never feels good to go to bed on a full stomach. 10) KEEP AN ACTIVITY AND FOOD LOG Record your daily exercise and what and how much you eat. Some researchers have found that just the act of recording the foods you eat results in better choices and a healthier diet. Also by writing everything down, you may also start to notice patterns. You can then take appropriate action. It's also a good idea to set daily goals to break the long-term ultimate goal into smaller chunks and to keep your goals in the forefront of your thoughts. Be sure that your goals are behavioral in nature (good examples: drink eight glasses of water, exercise for 30 minutes) instead of body-focused (poor examples: lose one pound, lose 10 inches). Stay in shape in a fitness class! 14 | wire magazine | issue #38, 2012 | www.wireweekly.com | facebook | twitter
SECOND ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM ON AGING tant to educate people about this growing segment of the LGBT community? So many of us are in denial about growing older. In addition, this is the first postAIDS generation (especially the men’s population) and in most areas around the USA we have out-grown the traditional “gay-ghetto” living situation. The LGBT community is much more integrated into the larger American population and nowhere is that more evident than in Miami-Dade County. The LGBT Community often forgets that issues within the community affect more than one demographic. Issues surrounding aging are often overlooked because people would rather not deal with them until it is time to face the music. Steve Adkins (President & CEO) and Jorge Richa (Marketing & Programming Director) of the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce talked to Wire Magazine about the upcoming Second Annual Symposium on Aging and the topics it will include.
