ALL WIRED UP
BY THOMAS BARKER
WIRE MAGAZINE’S ANNUAL HIP ISSUE When you live in a place as fabulous as South Florida, there is a constant stream of trendy restaurants, bars, shops, clubs, and almost everything in between making their debut on the circuit. As each of these places vies for the hottest spot in town to get your party or shop on, there are only a few that actually get it right. This is why we dedicate this issue to the hippest of the hip places and venues in South Florida. As we work our way into the heart of the social season, we have seen a number of new places open their doors, while a few of the mainstays continue to stay at the top of their game. We kick off our Hip Listings with the best burger place. As you will read, when you live in a place as diet focused as South Florida, there is nothing better than to cheat with a delicious burger and this year’s Hippest New Burger Joint offers just that with their original burger. Of course, when it comes to seeing some hot bodies, there is no better place than 12th Street Beach in South Beach. Hard bodied men pack the sand, strutting their stuff while soaking up the sun. And if you are looking for that perfect place for a romantic date, we’ve got just the spot for you with our Hippest Place for a Romantic Date, while if a more cultural experience is what you are looking for, we’ve also found the Hippest Place to Culture Yourself.
South Florida would not be as entertaining if it were not for the drag personas that regularly keep things interesting with their raunchy banter and over-the-top performances. This year, we have found the Hippest Drag Performer, and you can catch her every Saturday night at Discotekka. Keeping in line with the fact that South Florida is home to one of the most diverse Hispanic communities in the world, we’ve found the Hippest Latin Club in South Florida. Hint: It’s not on the beach! While there are some incredible parties taking place on a daily basis, there is only one place that can truly claim the title of the Hippest Club for Themed Parties, and, as anyone who has attended this club can attest, the themed parties thrown by our category winner are some of the grandest events in South Florida, if not the United States. If daytime drinking is your thing, you’re going to love our Hippest Happy Hour spot. Over the past couple of years, this watering hole and sushi eatery has only gotten better when it comes to their daily happy hour. I personally suggest the leachy martini. It’s my fav! In terms of weekly parties, no week would be complete without a hot Friday night soiree, and Score won this category by a landslide. Their Friday night party, Filthy Gorgeous Fridays has become the hottest place to see and be seen on a Friday night. But if you are looking to enjoy a scandalous encounter without all the fuss of actually going out to a club, Grindr is
certainly the place to look. Since the app first hit the market, it has grown to include over a million users internationally! Of course if you want to go from the virtual world to reality, the Hippest Variety of D#@ck Dancers will surely give you a lot to see, as Miami’s only stripper club regularly showcases the most masculine men in South Florida. And while some choose to party it up SoBe style, there’s also a plethora of entertainment taking place in Fort Lauderdale. For the second year in a row, The Manor Complex continues to dominate this category by offering one of the most diverse entertainment experiences for any and everyone’s taste. For the sophisticated drinker we’ve found the Hippest Cocktail Menu in South Florida, as Miami Beach’s only gay martini bar features some of the most elaborate cocktails and martinis in town. No nightlife experience would be complete without a fantastic bartender with a strong pour, and this year, we’ve listed the Hippest Bartender Duo in town. As you may have guessed, they work at one of the longest running gay bars in South Florida. And this is just a few of the categories you will find in this year’s Hip Issue, so sit back, grab a pen and a calendar, and begin to plan your journey through the hippest places and things in South Florida. I hope you enjoy discovering them as much as we have!

As I have mentioned in previous columns, I truly love art. So this week I bring to your attention the results of what started out as a concept idea between the famed fashion house family’s Uberto Gucci, his business partner Tatjana Labato, and Miami’s celebrated artist, Noel. This collaboration has led to an international artistic exchange that will premiere in a duo of events Thursday, November 17, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden, followed by a reception from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Raleigh Hotel.

POST MODERN POLITICS
by Michael W. Sasser
MAYBE NOW, CITY CAN ADDRESS MEMORIAL DAY MESS Now that the election in Miami Beach is over, maybe the city commission and administration can put on their long pants, adopt their grownup voices, and start acting like responsible leaders again. Even though this election cycle was largely unexciting and resulted in a notable victory for the status quo, politics was nevertheless in play. Among other things, incumbents had to cater to their most important constituency – the media, and carefully avoid taking any bold political positions, making any comment or decision on the dais that in any way conflicted with the City’s establishment. Election cycles prompt elected city officials to retreat from any kind of attention for fear that the financial benefactors who historically choose Miami Beach officials might decide to run someone against them. But now that there is a pause between election cycles and, most importantly, because Mayor Matti Bower is now in her final term and doesn’t have to worry about reelection, come on, gang, it’s time to get on the job. Sure there are a lot of issues the city needs to address. Yes, some will get kicked down the road because they aren’t politically expedient for the guys who are going to vie for the mayor’s seat next. No one is going to make any bold moves when it comes to streamlining an arrogant bureaucracy or seriously dealing with the pension
problems. Someone might slap some lipstick on the pig, but they aren’t going to make any real changes.
Now though, it’s time for city officials to remember that they don’t work for the race baiting industry or for the collective victim pool. They work for the taxpayers of Miami Beach and it is time to try being responsive to their needs.
Memorial Day and the “Occupy South Beach” crowd that it attracts is one crisis this city commission could address and that they should address. No one in town needs The city must find a way to end the mayhem that is Memoa primer on what a complete and total disaster Urban rial Day Weekend and now would be the time to do it. Beach Week is for Miami Beach and its residents. Most probably also know that the reason it is allowed to fester is because leaders are afraid that any attempt to curb the citywide riot will result in allegations of racism from the race-baiting industry. You know how that works, right? Any criticism of any person of color or people or color or of an event where people of color attend in big numbers is automatically racist in our Orwellian leftist fascist society. No matter how many deaths are involved.
Wise leaders would be willing to look at the ideas espoused by some of the unsuccessful candidates in the most recent election. Those outsider candidates were at least bold enough to conceptualize possible solutions.
But wisdom is in short supply among politicians, so the best real possibility is that officials come up with their own plans. Fine. But have a plan. End the bloodshed. Oh yeah… the brunch also includes unlimited mimosas and bloody Mary’s – all for only $59! HIPPEST PLACE TO WINE & DINE Wine Depot & Bistro 555

When it comes to wining and dining, South Florida has some of the best eateries in the United States; however, there is one that is the hippest of the hip, the fabulous Wine Depot & Bistro 555. This is where Wire Magazine’s Traveling comes in. Wire Magazine’s Traveling Brunch will return this December, taking our readers to some of the most opulent dining destinations to experience a three course prix fixed menu paired with FREE unlimited cocktails. The best part is that the brunch is always $35. Not a better deal in town!

WIRE FEATURE: THINGS GET HAIRY @ TWIST THIS FRIDAY NIGHT
As one of SoBe’s original gay bars, TWIST has continued to evolve with the gay community and reinvent itself time and time again – all while never wavering from it’s original formula of incredible entertainment, fabulous beats, and affordable stiff drinks! It’s legendary annual parties like Warsaw, The Foil Party, and Turnabout, among many others, always draw hundreds of people out of their homes and onto TWIST’s legendary dance floors. This Friday night, TWIST is doing it once again with its first Annual Bear Party, and according to TWIST partner, Joel Stedman, it was about time: “We have seen Bear parties really take off lately,” explains Joel. “Peter (Joel’s partner) and I took a vacation down to Puerto Vallarta a couple of years ago and ended up on Bear Island, and had an absolute blast, drank a lot of beer, and danced with the nicest guys with no attitude. Miami loves an excuse to party, so why not make this one about the bears. DJ Barry Huffine and I were throwing around different ideas, and we thought it might be time to butch up the beach a bit and throw a party for the real men and the guys who like them!” Like honey to a bear, TWIST will also be offering $15 beer buckets all night long. As Joel says, “We are determined to keep the beer flowing, nice and cold at a reasonable price!” I recently caught up with DJ Barry Huffine to get the inside scoop on the bear community and what all of our furry friends can expect this Friday night at TWIST. Check out what he had to say: First off, explain what a bear is to begin with? Ah yes, the “BEAR” term, well “bears,” are considered to be guys that are hairy - facial and /or body included, husky, and not afraid to drink beer and eat in public. (Laughingly) Where are you from and when did you move to South Florida?
Well, I’m basically native of South Florida, although I have moved around and lived in some of the greatest cities, including San Francisco, Atlanta, and recently New York.
bear communities and events allow that vibe. It’s much a more laidback atmosphere. With that said, there is such a huge “bear” community that has been waiting for their “circuit” time.
How did you get into the DJing business?
How did you get connected with TWIST?
I had been a music producer/remixer for several years, and one of my first Billboard Dance Songs was a collaboration that I did with DJ Alyson Calagna and Ceevox under the guise of “The Housekeeperz” in 2003. The song is called “WURKIN”. Several other original releases and remixes came about over the years and I even opened my own record label “Purchase Musik” with DJ John Rizzo. Many of my producer/DJ colleagues convinced me that I needed to step into that world to go to the next step, so I guess it was the logical decision. What a great one it was, because after all those years of standing by my friends who were DJing, I could always feel a sense of knowing the music and what needed to be played or what maybe I would think of playing. It’s something I should have done 20 years ago.
I’ve been a patron of TWIST since I was a wee lad! Actually I was looking to spin in Miami and my friend DJ Maximus 3000 asked me to play with him on his regular Wednesday party he does there. They all loved what I did and I was asked to come back on a Friday. I love playing at TWIST. The crowd is always great and really appreciate music, and the staff is always so friendly and treat you well, especially Joel Stedman, one of the owners who has been very gracious on providing this space for the party.
What kind of music do you spin that makes you an expert DJ for bear events? Well, I spin a lot of “groovy” music, mainly house music and stuff that makes your shoulder shake. If it doesn’t have a groove, it isn’t gonna make ya move! A good vocal and melody are always key for any song. I don’t really think of myself as an expert for any genre of the community. I just like to play “good” music and if the people that are there enjoy it, cool. It seems bear events have become very popular recently. Why do you think that is? Well, I think that more and more gay guys have become comfortable in their own skin and don’t have to conform to a “typical” type of image that maybe the gay community was perceived as for quite sometime. So they don’t feel as much pressure to be thin or muscle gods just to be a part of something or a community; they can just be regular guys that can let it all hang out so to speak. The

Why do you think TWIST will be the perfect spot in SoBe for this event? Well I just think TWIST is a staple in South Beach for many years, because they know how to do it right. They provide great entertainment and five different themed bars for everyone’s taste. The dance floor is there for those that want to get down, and then there is the patio and bungalow area for those that want to hang and chat. Plus two other bars with different styled music for people to roam through. I just think it offers something for everyone. Oh, and plus my music will be shaking the house that night. What can people expect at this new event? A furry, good time!

WIRED ON: MENTAL HEALTH NOBODY WANTS TO GO IT ALONE
FRAT HOUSE FRIDAYS @ JOHNNY’S MIAMI PHOTOS BY JUAN SACO MIRONOFF
One of the most frequent questions I’m asked is, “What is the most common problem that your gay, lesbian, and bisexual patients come to you for help with?” As time goes by, my answer has remained the same, and in fact, it becomes clearer and clearer to me that the primary issue which lies beneath many of the issues an individual, regardless of sexual orientation, may initially present with, is that of LONELINESS. In my professional experience, I have come to find that regardless of their presenting problem (or “chief complaint,” as we call it in clinical terms), it is often revealed that people have a hard time connecting interpersonally to others and struggle with feeling isolated and alone in the world. Of course, there are differing levels of loneliness, and not everyone experiences this feeling, however I have found that for many reasons, including cultural influences, technological advances, and past experience with trauma and loss, more and more people in our community are finding it difficult to achieve a sense of belonging, connection, and importance in relation to others. By cultural factors, I am referring to what society expects of us and how that interacts with what our ethnic and cultural backgrounds teach us. For example, one’s cultural background or family history might say that it’s normal and expected to drop by the home of a family member or dear friend without calling beforehand or having agreed upon a time to meet. When one does this in a society that frowns upon unannounced visits, or considers such behavior to be rude and inconsiderate (rather than warm and familial as it was intended), there is a risk of rejection and criticism that can lead to disruption of relationships, disconnection, and if the rupture occurs frequently enough, ultimately isolation. Technological advances, including the use of email, text, and social networking applications such as Facebook, Grindr, and other chat programs, while intended to bring us closer together, often have the opposite result of alienating us from one another when they are misused or abused. It’s not uncommon nowadays to see a group of friends huddled together at a table during lunch, each one glued to his or her respective smart phone instead of interacting with one another face-to-face. (They may even be texting someone at the same table, as if they forgot that person was right next to them!) When used appropriately, and within limits, our technology can be a wonderful enhancement to connecting socially and getting together in ‘real life.’ If we are not careful, however, we run the risk of making people feel that whatever is going on in our mobile devices is more important than they are. I once sat through lunch with an attorney acquaintance of mine who looked up at me from his mobile device only a few times during the hour we were together, and that was only because I had raised my voice loud enough to distract him from whatever he was occupied with on his handheld computer. People’s difficulty connecting with others and feeling part of a community is often created or exacerbated by previous experiences with loss and rejection, such as an abusive childhood or relationship (abuse can be physical or emotional, overt or covert, and intentional or unintentional) or a painful breakup. Many adults haven’t suffered traumatic isolation or loss, but rather simply have never really felt loved by or special to another human being. These people therefore have extreme difficulty finding realistic relationships, because they cannot recognize love and respect when they find it. Humans are social beings. We need other people in order to survive, and it is normal and healthy to seek connection, belonging, and togetherness. We thrive when we feel important to those around us, and for that reason it is important to not only respect, but also hold in high regard, the relationships we have with others. We need to protect our connections and remember that whether we like a certain person or not, the relationships we build are part of what keep us alive. No human being has yet been able to do it alone—and so none of us should ever have to. Dr. Gregg A. Pizzi, Licensed Psychologist, specializes in the Emotional Health & Wellness of the GLBT community.
