I grew up in Costa Rica, a country known as an example of democracy in an often tumultuous Latin American region with countless examples of dictators who steal elections and go on to violate people’s rights while ruling countries as their own personal fiefdoms. I was also fortunate enough to graduate from the United States Coast Guard Academy with high honors, where as cadets we had a code of conduct that prohibited us from lying and cheating. At the Academy, we were also reminded daily of the importance of honoring our country, the Constitution and our responsibilities as members of the Armed Forces of a nation that believes in the pursuit of freedom and liberty for all.
So when I hear people tell me that they don’t plan to vote because their vote won’t matter, I remind them that every vote matters and just a few thousand votes could determine if the next president is a convicted felon who lies constantly, cheated on all his wives, and encouraged a violent mob to attack Congress to prevent the certification of an election he lost; or President Biden. For me, the most important reason for everyone to vote is to protect our democracy and our rights from a demagogue who acts and speaks like so many of the dictators that have destroyed many Latin American countries.
Since I love the United States and made it my home, I want our great nation to remain the beacon of hope around the world that Costa Rica also represents when people think of nations where democracy thrives. The United States cannot afford the perils of being ruled by a man with so many traits that remind me of Maduro, Castro, Ortega, Chavez, and some many other despots that trampled over the rule of law and the rights of anyone who opposed their dictatorial ways. This November, voters in the United States have a very simple choice to make and nothing is more important than defending the democracy created by our Founding Fathers against a very clear and present danger. Nothing!!!
So vote like our democracy and your rights depend on it, because they do. Elections are won and lost at the margin and just a few thousands votes can determine if many of the rights our LGBTQ community fought so hard to earn will be lost once again, just like women in the United States lost their right to choose thanks to one man who has cheated on all his wives and has no regard for the truth or any moral principles.
Cheers,

Last week I went to the Adrienne Arsht Center to see the Broadway musical Les Misérables, which I wrote about in last month’s issue of Wire Magazine and is one of my favorite Broadway shows of all time. Prior to seeing Les Misérables, I decided to have dinner at Teatro, the restaurant at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House. I love red, so I was pleasantly surprised by Teatro’s 2,500-square-foot dining room rich red color palette when we walked into the restaurant — an homage to the curtains on theater stages.
Teatro features a chef-driven culinary concept with a New American menu from Executive Chef Jose Danger in collaboration with Constellation Culinary Group’s Corporate Executive Chef Aaron Janus. The menu has creative European and Latin influences. Teatro’s $52 prixfixe menu includes a choice of one appetizer and entrée or one entrée and dessert, plus several appetizing sides and à la carte dishes.
You can also complement your dining experience with craft cocktails like The Cue with Dewars, Crème de cassis, lemon, and blackberries; Paloma Morada with Patron Reposado tequila, Velvet Falernum, lime juice Monin, Ruby Red Grapefruit Syrup, fresh grapefruit juice, and pea flower tea;
and Espresso Martini with Grey Goose Vodka, Bailey’s Irish Cream, fresh Espresso Casadores Café, and sea salt; plus an extensive wine collection.
Some of Teatro’s inviting appetizers are the Steak Carpaccio with espresso-rubbed angus steak, tonnato sauce, preserved lemon vinaigrette, shaved radish, crispy capers, and mustard greens; Huevos Rotos with house made crispy potato chips, truffled cheddar foam, sliced jamón Ibérico, and fried egg; and Shrimp Cocktail with white wine poached shrimp, shaved baby vegetable, cocktail sauce, and lemon.
Several of the flavorful entrées include Teatro Crispy Lasagna with Italian sausage and angus beef Bolognese, smoked mozzarella bechamel, pecorino, and spicy arrabbiata sauce; Lamb Osso Bucco with stone fruit braised lamb, orange, pomegranate, glazed carrots, charred green onion, mint gremolata, and toasted pistachios; and Southern Brick Chicken with roasted chicken breast, roasted heirloom tomatoes, creamed roasted corn, cornbread, and pork rind ‘dust.’
Some options to satisfy your sweet tooth include Key Lime Meringue Tart with Florida key lime custard, fall spiced cracker crust, and burnt Swiss meringue; Strawberry Shortcake with cane sugar crusted biscuit crumble, kaffir lime sugared strawberries, whipped sweet cream, and dried strawberries; and Seasonal Sorbet with different daily flavors.

A walk is not just good for your body, it's also good for your soul. Physical activity, like walking, is one of the best ways to reduce stress and boost your mood. However, reports show walking rates are declining steadily in the United States. On average, 1 out of every 4 U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day, per research from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. Regular exercise improves mood, boosts energy and can even help you sleep better. Staying active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy.
Consider this advice from the American Heart Association, which has worked for decades to promote policies and strategies that make it easier for communities to get and stay active. One example is National Walking Day, established by the organization to encourage people to move more throughout the day so they can feel, think, sleep, and live better.
Indeed, adding more movement can benefit your body and mind in numerous ways, such as:
Lowering disease risk. Getting the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 150 minutes of moderate, 75 minutes of vigorous or a combination of those activities per week) is linked to lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles,
improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression, according to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.
Increasing sunlight exposure. Outdoor exercise is an easy way to get moving and take in the sunlight, which can improve mood, boost immunity, and help you get some vitamin D. Spending time outdoors is a no-cost option and has been shown to reduce stress, promote a sense of belonging and improve mood.
Improving cognitive and mental function. Physical activity keeps your mind sharp now and later. Studies show higher fitness levels are linked to better attention, learning, working memory and problem solving. What's more, a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows people who get the recommended amount of physical activity are less likely to develop depression.
Living longer. Healthy life expectancy can be positively impacted by increasing activity. According to research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, swapping just 30 minutes of sitting with low-intensity physical activity reduced risk of death by 17%.
