Did You Say Coslopus? Every day it seems our community becomes more and more fascinated with the world of celebrity. At this point, I think E! Entertainment has officially replaced Lifetime as the new official television network for women and gay men. From scandalous celebrity antics, like Britney Spears going off the deep end, to glitzy award shows, like the Oscars and Grammys, we just can’t seem to get enough of all that glitters in tinsel town.

Since launching her show, Chelsea has become one of the biggest names in entertainment. She recently released her third book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang, and began a national tour, which sold out so quickly that she had to add a second show in most of the cities she will be visiting.
TopTrax returns this week with a special feature on DJ Just Oliver, who will be the official DJ this Friday night for TWIST’s annual Spring Break Party. This year, the party is scheduled to be the most scandalous one yet, as there will actually be a pants check, so all of the sexy spring breakers will get the chance to party it up in their skivvies. If that were not enough to heat up the night, Pussila will also be hosting a wet underwear/swimsuit contest. This is one party you will not want to miss!

PUBLISHERs’ CORNER Can We Afford National Healthcare? This has been a week where the issue of healthcare has been front and center in both the national and local news. The debate is really heating up as high noon approaches for both President Obama’s national healthcare program and Jackson Health System. Key decisions on healthcare are being made that will affect all of us, and votes are being cast that will determine the kind of services and benefits many of us in South Florida and the U.S. will receive for years to come. As Democrats and Republicans work on both tackling this massive problem and saving their political hides for another day, I can’t help but ask a simple question, “Can we afford national healthcare?” The answer is “no we can’t.” Unless we are all willing to pay higher taxes to get it and live with billions of our taxpayer dollars being wasted through fraud and inefficiency, we have to stop kidding ourselves into thinking that we can afford another massive government run program. Just look that at two glaring facts: 1) Medicare and Medicaid are part of the existing national healthcare program run by our government and these programs are riddled with billions of dollars in fraud and waste. News reports abound about how healthcare fraudsters steal billions of our taxpayer dollars every year using front companies, crooked doctors, and phony patients; many of the money stolen right here in South Florida. 2) The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides patient care through VA Hospitals and healthcare facilities whose quality of care has also been the subject of many other news reports exposing how veterans do not receive the healthcare promised to them for serving our country. These two examples prove that our federal government is already incapable of managing a much smaller national healthcare system than the one being proposed. If your mom had health problems and was being taken care of by a couple of home healthcare workers that you found doing a poor job, would you ask 6 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
these people to take care of your dad if he also needed home based care? Off course not! You would be crazy to do so. So why are we asking our federal government to take on more healthcare responsibilities when it has so clearly proven that it cannot handle the ones it already has?
Yes, many good, hard working people, innocent children, and the elderly are in desperate need of affordable healthcare and have a right to receive it. However, we are trying to solve the problem with the wrong solutions, and we are going to regret taking the pill we are about to swallow.
My final example is the massive financial disaster at Jackson Health System, where poor management and ineffective governmental supervision have led to millions of dollars in unsustainable losses, and the prospect of major cutbacks in care and employment. On their website, Jackson Health System states that it is “Governed by the Public Health Trust, a dedicated team of citizen volunteers acting on behalf of the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners, Jackson Health System ensures that all residents of Miami-Dade County receive a single high standard of care regardless of their ability to pay.” Need I say more?
I do not have an answer to how we should resolve the national healthcare crisis. However, an analysis of the facts has proven to me that we cannot afford a national healthcare plan as currently envisioned. We should not let our politicians pass a bill that will put us further into debt and waste more billions of our taxpayer dollars on a campaign promise. Citizens should never let either Democrats or Republicans do this to our country on any national issue. POSTMODERN POLITICS
By Michael W. Sasser
Readers Chime In In a year now since postmodern politics debuted with a new focus exclusively on regional politics, it has never ceased to amaze which columns appear to provoke the strongest reactions from readers. It’s also been curious and interesting how subject and theme often affect readers more than the actual content at times. That said, postmodern politics has attracted a solid amount of reader responses on numerous topics taken up. Those of you brave enough to go to the effort and drop me a line are being rewarded with a few comments in print here, in addition to brief replies that appear for the first time here. Some notes have been edited for brevity or grammar while preserving the focus and content. Barbie writes… I was dismayed and shocked to see that you defended convicted sex offenders in your column “No Christmas at Pervert Park.” How can you defend these types of monsters?
have been railroaded by a corrupt legal system and/or were found guilty of crimes far less heinous than other people who go on to have full civil rights in society when freed. Good for you! This column brought in the most attention of any in the past six months and it was surprisingly diverse. However the one unifying theme of the mail was that many readers didn’t get it. The column did not decry the “special treatment” these convicted but freed offenders receive. Rather it questioned whether as a culture and as a community, we have addressed this challenge at all or if we have simply chosen to ignore it. It questioned if we believe in a society that is fine with convicted but freed killers, thieves, and spouse batterers living among us but a special class existing in society for freed sexual criminals – whether the latter is a threatening child molester or one convicted of statutory rape when 19-years old. I believe the issue will have to one day be addressed and not ignored because political leaders don’t want to deal with a hot potato consideration. I don’t advocate any position on this – it is an observation.
Jerry writes… Bravo for you taking a stand for the people driven to living under a bridge even though they are free men. Someone has to realize that Aurelio writes… you judge a society based on how you treat Why are you hating on Michelle Spencethe least of its people. Many of these1 people Jones?AM Page 1 Wire_MMia_9.5x4.854_3.17:Layout 2/25/10 10:48

O N
You’ve got to be kidding me? First of all, emotion never enters into it, beyond the loathing and disgust I have for 99 percent of politicians to begin with. What pushes my disgust level up that last notch? Here are a few things: Making oneself more important than one’s collective constituency; trying to paint oneself a victim; and otherwise immediately playing racial politics to cover one’s crooked ass. How’s that for reasons to be disgusted. And that’s not even touching on the delusional issues…
I’m hardly revealing state secrets here – they know this is true but count on continuing to buy enough support that it won’t matter. And, no, I don’t think politicians can get embarrassed. Doesn’t work that way with crooks and narcissists. Victor writes… So now that the Miami Dolphins have said that they aren’t going to pursue public funding for stadium improvements, do you think the “fix” is no longer in?
David writes… You hit it right on the nose about municipalities screaming that police and fire are going to be cut because of budget issues…to try to get people to support taxes and [get panicky]. Do you think they read you and were embarrassed?
No I don’t think that at all. If you read carefully, you will see that I believe making it an issue exposed to the public at all is the key to using public funding sometime in the future. The balloon has been floated. It will come back when the time is right. Only the next time it won’t shock or aggravate people as much because it’s been on the table already. This is how you acclimate a population to a bad deal ahead of time. Wait and see!
Honestly that was an easy one. No politicians wants to admit “Hey we have financial problems because we give ridiculous union contracts in exchange for political support in our elections; and because we have to spread budget money around to important people’s special interests to keep campaign contributions coming in.” It would be true but they won’t say it. To answer your questions: I think some might read PP, but
Keep your comments coming and we will do this again one day soon.

COVER STORY: CHELSEA HANDLER
By Thomas Barker
Photos courtesy of Borderline Amazing Productions
Late one night, after an evening of cocktails, parties, and boys, I decided
to spend a little time relaxing by flipping on the tube and taking in some
thoughtless television that only E! Entertainment could provide. But instead of finding the usual vapid shows like Keeping up with the Kardashians or E! News, I was greeted by a vivacious and sharp-tongued blond, who spent most of the time making fun of her E! costars and talking about her love for vodka and hazy nights out on the town. Also being someone who can’t get enough of tinsel town gossip, loves vodka martinis, and has had way too
many hazy nights out on the town, I was smitten. So much so, I even began to ponder if I was having my first lesbian experience! By the end of the show, it was a done deal. For the first time in my life, I was to have an ongoing love affair with a woman by the name Chelsea Handler
every night at 11 p.m./10 p.m. Central. Since then, Chelsea has been one
of the most reliable people I’ve ever gone steady with. She makes me laugh, is always on time, and loves vodka just as much as I do.
What’s more is that Chelsea has a very interesting story that I can easily relate to. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in standup after
growing up in New Jersey with a family she describes in the dedication of
her new book Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang as a “bunch of assholes.” While
working as a waitress, she managed to party like a rock star and enjoy a
good number of one-night stands. This time in her life eventually served as the focus of her first book, “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One-Night
Stands” and then led to her second book and New York Times Best Seller, “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea”.
I can’t tell you how many times I have heard some fag-hag say, “I am a gay
man trapped in a woman’s body.” Well after reading a few passages from her books, I finally understand what they mean. Her stories make me feel like a “fag-hag trapped in a gay man’s body.” Who knew that was even possible! What’s also really great about Chelsea is her support of the gay community. In fact, she served as the grand marshal of the Los Angeles Gay Pride and was recently awarded the prestigious Ally for Equality Award by the Human Rights Campaign for her outstanding efforts to better the lives of the GLBT community. So after a year or so of our incredible love affair, matched with her dedication to our community, I was more than excited when she announced 12 | wire magazine | wireweekly.com
the beginning of her national tour, and that she would be doing a show in Miami next Friday, March 26 at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater. I guess I was not

show to take place right after the first one. With so many gay men looking forward to Chelsea’s appearance, I just had to find a way to sit down with Chelsea for a few minutes and interview her for all our readers. After jumping through a few flaming hoops, I eventually found myself sitting on the other end of a phone exchanging some banter with the funniest woman on television right now. Check out what she had to say:
How did you go from New Jersey to being one of the biggest comediennes on television right now?
I went out to a gay bar the other day and asked some boys what they would ask you if they could. One of the questions a number of people kept asking in one way or another was, “what is your craziest drunken moment?” Oh my gosh! I haven’t had one of those in a long time, because now I have gotten really good at drinking. I probably wrote about it in one of the chapters of my first book. That was the wildest period of my life… my twenties. There really wasn’t one. They all kind of blended together. It was like a couple years of different people, men, apartments, and El Caminos.
Well my plan was to get out of New Jersey and get out fast. I had to scramble to come up with some idea of what to do. As soon as I graduated high school, I came to California and I had to find something I could do while I was drinking, and the only profession really was standup.
You’ve interviewed a ton of celebrities on your show. Which one has totally driven you crazy or gotten on your nerves the most?
Another was, “Have you ever had a lesbian experience?” I think I’ve made out with a girl once when I was on ecstasy or something, but not recently.
Describe your new book to me. I would just say that it is just a little recap of my life. I mean
Well not so much on my nerves, but just really boring was

is going on in my life and share them. I spend so much time making fun of other people; it’s nice to get back to my roots and make fun of myself. You can grab Chelsea’s new book, Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang at Books & Books or at your local bookstore.
Oh yea! Did you say bitches?
Well it could be a combination of the two. Well they were superiorly stupid. I like guests like that though. I like when they are kind of stupid. It makes me look like I am smarter than I am.
You have a massive gay following. How do you feel about that? I love gay people. They are like black people. They are very effusive. When they say something, they like to say it loud and I like that.

What's the craziest thing that's ever happened to you on Spring break?
Leona first got her big break in 2006 when she was crowned the winner of the third X Factor (the British version of American Idol). After signing a $9.7 million record deal with Simon Cowell and Clive ‘everything i touch turns platinum’ Davis, she quickly shot out a couple of hit singles across the pond and became an overnight sensation. her debut album Spirit sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide, mainly thanks to her monster hit Bleeding Love. it’s probably stuck in your head now… oops! the sappy single first trickled its way into our eardrums last year (not to mention the clubs thanks to a hot remix by Moto Blanco). now Leona’s back to help the healing begin.
the first single Happy is already out, but unfortunately hasn’t been able to coax many smiles from the U.S. charts yet. it definitely reeks of tedder’s signature style of thumping baselines laced with orchestral melodies that would rival some of the world’s finest symphonies, but i wouldn’t say it merits the title of ‘debut single’ considering the rest of the candidates. i would definitely recommend you get your ass on youtube though and check out the video directed by Jake Nava and filmed on location in Cuba. dále! I Got You would’ve been my choice for the first single. it starts off with a simple guitar riff then explodes into a tidal wave of unconditional devotion as Lewis vows: “When you need a place to run to / For better or worse / i got you.”
If you could pick one song to describe your Spring Break set, what would it be?
