Courage Have I the courage to leave the familiar And journey into the unknown? To journey beyond the way I have prayed, The life I have lived, the sensible and the secure? To trust God to take me beyond these familiar shores? These lines from the Celtic Daily Prayer of the Northumbria community express our theme this fall. Courage. We are living in times when the familiar is no longer marked by similarity. bell hooks reminds us that the dominant culture exploits that, and tries to make us afraid of difference—to make us choose safety over risk, sameness over diversity. Leaving the familiar shore by intentionally living into a bigger world, discovering what connects us, and reveling in our differences can be risky. This fall we courageously embrace that holy here and now. We’ll explore courage as a practice through stories, documentaries, music, art, scripture, writing

and conversation. We’ll reach into our hearts and minds and encourage ourselves and one another to cross borders, heal a relationship, listen to the story of someone we do not know, and confront issues of race, power, and identity. Join us in this great work, as we nourish courage in all its dimensions and widen our lenses of kinship, compassion and creativity. Be of good courage,

AWAKENING WISE COURAGE: AN EVENING’S EXPLORATION WITH MARGARET WHEATLEY AND BARBARA MCAFEE

WAITER In a dream I took a giant pair of scissors and cut a snippet of the Mississippi river.

How can we best be present, awake and engaged in this time? Even as our hearts break and our anger and frustration rise, what is courageous action? How do insight and compassion inform our courage? In different ways, Meg and Barbara have been exploring these questions with many people in many places. In this evening of conversation, music and poetry, they will share their experiences and invite you to reflect on your own, as together we explore what it means to be both wise and courageously engaged today.

I wrapped it like a thread around my finger and took it to the peoples of the world whose lands are short on water. Like a waiter before dinner I poured the water freely and woke up filled with the wonder of one human hearing the thirst of another and not ignoring that any more. IBTIS AM BARAK AT

Margaret Wheatley, EdD, says, “Now in my 70s, I can look back and appreciate what a rich and blessed life I’ve lived. I’ve been able to give my curiosity free rein and to be with extraordinary teachers. I’ve explored a wide range of disciplines and lived in several different cultures. I’ve learned from indigenous peoples to the Dalai Lama, from small town ministers to senior government ministers, from leading scientists to National Park rangers, from engaged activists to solitary monastics. Access to so many sources of experience and wisdom, held in the container of friendship, deepens my resolve to bring whatever I’m learning into my books and teachings, and to continue to be of service in this darkening world.” Barbara McAfee is a voice coach, singer/ songwriter, keynote speaker, and author of Full Voice: The Art and Practice of Vocal Presence, who merges lessons from 12 years in organization development with the transformational power of sound. “The band” for Margaret Wheatley’s Women’s Leadership Revival Tour, Barbara has produced seven CDs and is founder of the Morning Star Singers, a volunteer hospice choir in the Twin Cities. She lives across the street from the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

All programs are held at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, unless otherwise noted.

MORE THAN A SINGLE STORY: FINDING COURAGE IN A TIME OF DARKNESS More Than a Single Story is a series of panel discussions/community conversations inspired by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful TED talk, The Danger of a Single Story, which shows how stereotypes are fostered when we treat one story of a people as their only story. Moderated by Carolyn Holbrook, the panels invite writers of color and indigenous writers to discuss issues of importance to them in their own words. This conversation at Wisdom Ways will probe where and how these writers find strength and courage in our difficult times. Mother Teresa once said “I do not agree with the big way of doing things. To us, what matters is an individual.” These women will explore large and small ways they find courage when they need it, and ways that they have given courage to others, often while struggling to maintain their own center. Moderator, Carolyn Holbrook, is founder and former Executive/Artistic Director of SASE: The Write Place, and a widely published writer whose essays are included in A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota and Blues Vision: African American Writing from Minnesota. She teaches Creative Writing at Hamline University and was named one of 50 of the most inspiring and accomplished leaders in Minnesota over the age of 50 by AARP and Pollen Midwest.

new worlds. Her manuscript Midwest Mujeres: Chicana/Latina Performance explores racialized and gendered geographies of urban Minnesota. A Naked Stages Fellow at the Pillsbury House Theatre, she is a Postdoctoral Associate at the University of Minnesota in the Department of Chicano and Latino Studies where she will join the faculty in 2019. Poet, community artist activist and educator Anh-Hoa Thi Nguyen was born in Saigon and grew up in St. Paul. An MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College in Oakland, California, she has performed her work in the Bay Area and Twin Cities and has been published in many journals and anthologies, including Troubling Borders: An Anthology of Art and Literature by Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora. She is the founder of Pomelo Press, and creates self-published and hand bound artist’s books.

Lana Barkawi is executive and artistic director of Mizna and executive editor of its literary journal, Mizna: Prose, Poetry, and Art Exploring Arab America. Lana’s interest in fostering a local, national, and international space for Arab art and community has brought Mizna in partnership with many artists and organizations to present creative work that creates change. She has served on many grant panels and boards, including the board of St. Paul’s Cultural STAR Program. Arleta Little is an arts program officer and Director of Artist Fellowships at the McKnight Foundation. She served for nearly a decade as the executive director of the Givens Foundation for African American Literature, a literary arts organization in Minneapolis dedicated to advancing and celebrating African American literature and writers. A poet and writer, she was most recently published in Blues Vision: African American Writing from Minnesota. Interdisciplinary performance artist and Xicana feminist scholar Jessica Lopez Lyman, PhD, is interested in how People of Color create alternative spaces to heal and imagine

Susan Power is the author of The Grass Dancer (1995 PEN/Hemingway prize), Roofwalker (2002 Milkweed National Fiction Prize), and Sacred Wilderness. Her short stories and essays have been widely published in journals, magazines and anthologies including The Best American Short Stories of 1993 and Granta. An enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, born and raised in Chicago, she is a graduate of Harvard Law School and the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop who makes her home in St. Paul. WRITING THROUGH TRAUMA

When we experience trauma, we feel alone and unprotected. Trauma can be personal, ranging from the death of a loved one, immigration, domestic violence, rape, divorce, incarceration, police brutality, sexual harassment, mistreatment by an employer or a teacher, to absent or aging parents. Trauma can also be historical, caused by genocide, slavery or holocaust. Whether the trauma is physical or psychological, we often feel shame, believing that what happened is our fault.

Come learn tools and techniques for using the journal and the power of writing to tap into our innate abilities to help ourselves heal and restore wellness, and to begin to believe that we are not the problem, the problem is the problem. Please note that this workshop is intended to enhance methods of healing that engage and strengthen our coping skills rather than to replace therapy or other healing work already underway. EXPERIENCING MARY’S MAGNIFICAT IN THE WORDS OF MARTIN LUTHER AND ELIZABETH JOHNSON As we mark the 500th Commemoration of the Reformation, what do Martin Luther and a contemporary feminist Catholic theologian have to tell us about Mary’s Magnificat? Together we will read, sing, and delve into Mary’s song in Luke 1:4655. Guided by the words and insights of Martin Luther and Elizabeth Johnson and other theologians, we will consider Luke’s and Mary’s relationship to power and compare it to our own. We will also examine the biblical connections among Mary, Elizabeth and Hannah, especially Hannah’s Song. Come explore the many ways the Magnificat has shaped Catholic and Lutheran understandings and faith perspectives, as evidenced by our presenters – a Lutheran professor of Old Testament and a Catholic Marian scholar. Diane Jacobson, professor emerita of Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, was the first woman to teach Bible at any Lutheran seminary in the US. A frequent speaker and author of many publications, Jacobson is a lover of Scripture whose calling is to teach Scripture for the sake of God’s world, and to invite others into the wonders and rewards of exploring the Bible together. Mary Kaye Medinger, MA, is a lifelong educator, writer, editor, spiritual director and retreat leader with a particular interest in women’s spirituality, especially Mariology. A consociate of the Sisters of St. Joseph, she has spent nearly 40 years in various ministerial positions in parish, diocesan and ecumenical settings. WHEN: Thursday, COST: $30.00

GENEROUS I have known a thousand kinds of death: Death of a plant on the window sill, death of a pet that listened more than a mother, death of a big dream because I could not find a big warm room for it on a cold night. Not even one death was kind as it took without permission. But all were generous: offering an absence — a fierce sunset followed by a feared darkness — without which I would never have befriended the moon, and the guiding stars in myself.

Experimental vocalist and composer Jessika Kenney is known for a haunting sense of timbre. A longtime student of Gamelan and Persian song who has studied in Indonesia and under famed Iranian singer and ney flute player Hossein Omouni, she is known for performance of Indonesian and Persian vocal music and compositions drawing on both traditions. She has composed music to Fatemeh Keshavarz’s works. Her albums include Atria and The Face of the Earth. Jessika lives on Tataviam land in southern California. WHEN: Wednesday, COST: $25.00

The poems of 13th century Persian mystic Muhammad Jalal al-Din al-Balkhi al-Rumi, who has long shaped Muslims around the world, plunge us into a bold, full-blooded view of human reality. Gorgeous, grim, transcendent, or tragic, Rumi embraces our nature and models a language of hope.

ISLAMIC SPIRITUAL TRADITION AND IRAN TODAY

As the northern hemisphere spins toward the longest night of the year, come find solace and inspiration in a tapestry of chant, movement, and the words of Rumi. Rumi scholar and interpreter Fatemeh Keshavarz and musician Jessica Kenney will create a deeply meditative evening that touches the soul and makes space for the liminal mysteries that unfold throughout this season. The threads of hope that fill Rumi’s lines will inspire us to reach beyond our knowing, toward a vision for humanity that is beautiful, courageous and pregnant with God.

This exploration of Iranian literature and society from scholar, teacher, and poet Fatemeh Keshavarz challenges popular perceptions of present-day Iran as a society bereft of vitality and joy. Her fresh perspective provides a rare insight into this rich culture alive with artistic expression but virtually unknown to most Americans. “Through story and poetry, I hope people here will see the creative and humorous side of the Iranian people: in other words, their ordinariness,” she says. “They are not the ‘other’; they have the same hopes and aspirations and wonderful things to contribute to world culture.”

Iranian-American poet and scholar Fatemeh Keshavarz was born and raised in the city of Shiraz in southwest Iran. A strong believer in the importance of cultural education, she is the Roshan Institute Chair in Persian Studies and director of the Roshan Institute for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland. A Rumi scholar, a published poet in Persian and English, and an activist for peace and justice, her books include Reading Mystical Lyric: the Case of Jalal al-Din Rumi and Jasmine and Stars: Reading more than Lolita in Tehran.

HEDGEROW INITIATIVE The Hedgerow Initiative offers sustained, systematic programming in feminist theological education, spiritual integration, and leadership for a just and holy world. In a particular way, the Initiative highlights the scholarship of women who since the 1950s have worked to reclaim women’s presence and significance in scripture, church, history, theology and culture. The Initiative takes its name from the hedgerow schools in Ireland that kept alive the language, faith, culture and community of the people during the time of the British penal codes. In their new book Goddess and God in the World, pioneering feminist theologians Carol Christ and Judith Plaskow model a process not only for telling their stories but for critiquing and responding to each other’s reflections. We are invited to join them on a theological journey! In this engaging course, participants will explore the stimulating conversations between these two women and use their process to create their own theological memoirs.

Come prepared to read, reflect, engage in dialogue, and write reflections on what has shaped our own theological journeys!

Peter’s mother-in-law, the woman healed with the hemorrhage, the Syrophoenician woman, the woman who anointed Jesus’ head, and the women of Galilee at the cross and tomb all model faith and prophecy. WINDOWS IN OUR WALLS: SEEING WITH FRESH EYES Annual Fall Soul Conference We live in a box of space and time. Movies are windows in its walls. They allow us to enter other minds, not simply in the sense of identifying with the characters… but by seeing the world as another person sees it. * ROGER EBERT

This year’s Fall Soul conference challenges us to enlarge our windows and shrink the walls in the boxes that keep us from one another. Come engage the rich and textured culture of the Twin Cities as we view selected documentaries about people behind headlines and travel bans—many with roots and paths in Minnesota, and participating in this conference. How do young Somali women and men living in the Twin Cities see their surroundings? What can we learn about courage from women contending with daily violence in Syria, and Iraqis who counter the devastation of war and occupation by building bridges of friendship and reconciliation? Viewing these films together with actors and directors, musicians, community organizers, theologians, poets, educators, artists, and film critics, we’ll process what we’ve seen and probe race, power, and the complexities of social and political constructs that keep our walls intact. Come discover how “seeing the world as another person sees it” can touch our hearts and evoke empathy, compassion, and change. Turning away from fear and suspicion, we can see the world with fresh eyes and live from a deeper, broader sense of shared humanity.

Sample documentary films and exhibits include: • A Stray, the story of a Somali refugee in Minneapolis who crosses paths with a stray dog. Written and directed by Musa Sayeed. • Iraqi Voices, a selection of short documentary films written and directed by Iraqi-Minnesotan refugees and immigrants in the Twin Cities, through the Iraqi-American Reconciliation Project • Photo exhibits by Syrian photographer Osama Esid and Jamal Penjweny (see page 20-21) •Q ueens of Syria, how 50 women from Syria in exile in Jordan come together to create and perform their own version of the ancient Greek tragedy, “The Trojan Women” •M usic by Native Latin American composers that tell the story of the colonization process in Latin America, led by Mexican-Egyptian conductor and pianist Ahmed Anzaldúa El Samkary of BorderCrosSing (see page 27) For more details see www.wisdomways.org Friday, November 10, 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Saturday, November 11, 9:30 to 3:30 pm COST: $20.00 This conference is supported by a grant. MEN’S SPIRITUALITY

THE WELCOMING PRAYER A Contemplative Practice Central to many religious traditions is developing awareness of how thoughts and emotions dominate much of our focus of attention. To “Let go and let God” requires some type of practice focused on surrendering our well-developed and overprotective egos or false self. The Welcoming Prayer is a simple and practical way to let go of the afflictive emotions that arise regularly. This is a discipline for daily life which originated through Centering Prayer as a supplemental practice.

The Welcoming Prayer more than holds its own as a tool of inner awakening, and used with this deliberate intention, it can take you all the way there. It is the most important practice I know of to engage the attention of the heart and apply it to the total transformation of consciousness. * CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT

Terry Shaughnessy first learned the Welcoming Prayer in 1992 from Mary Mrozowski, the creator and spiritual mother of the practice. This simple, yet profound spiritual tool has enriched his Centering Prayer practice and helped provide freedom from much unnecessary suffering in his life. WHEN: Thursday, COST: $15.00

I write for my heart has become a country and I want all people to live in it. I make space by emptying all corners of fear. I make peace by making a cup of tea for my story and yours — a cup of tea for our estranged histories that come from one family but to one another do not speak. Hot tea and mint I have meant to invite you over to my heart. Do you like your tea with sugar?

MEDITATION

M

Each time we practice Christian meditation we, through the process of detaching from our rational minds and our ego self, surrender ourselves totally to the divine Other. Each prayer period becomes a way of saying: You are not only the center of my life; you are my life. * EILEEN O’HEA

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Let the truth be in your hearts, as it will be if you practice meditation, and you will see clearly what love we are bound to have for our neighbors. * TERESA OF AVILA

MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer in which we move beyond words, thoughts, and images. We open ourselves to God’s mysterious and silent presence within us and it becomes more and more the reality of our lives. From this place of prayer we engage in our work in the world.

TUESDAY EVENING MEDITATION During these times of prayer, we will sit in silent meditation with others. Meditating together is a way of deepening and supporting our personal practice. The weekly sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. An optional short introduction to Christian Meditation follows for those new to this form of prayer. Come as often as you are able. Tuesdays, September 5 to December 19, 7:00 pm to 7:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free. WHEN:

MEDITATION DURING ADVENT Advent is a time of waiting. We wait for the celebration of Christmas, the feast of the incarnation of God in Jesus. We wait for that time when God will be all in all. And in between, we contemplate the mystery of the Divine here and now, God present in all that is, sustaining all in life and love, manifesting in all, in us. Wisdom Ways offers two contemplative experiences to enliven our waiting.

TUESDAY NOONDAY MEDITATION During Advent, noonday meditation will be offered in addition to the regular Tuesday evening meditation. The weekly session will include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. Tuesdays, December 5 - December 19, 12:00 noon to 12:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free. WHEN:

MORNING MEDITATION RETREAT This Advent morning retreat provides a more extended and focused time to deepen our existing practice of meditation. Our morning in silence will include a pattern of sitting and walking meditations, mindful movements, and chanting. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $15.00

December 9, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Facilitators for Christian meditation programs: Susan Oeffling, CSJ, spiritual director, has master’s degrees in theology and counseling and spiritual direction training from the Center for Spiritual Guidance. Deborah Chernick studies the history of Christian contemplative prayer and serves on the board of the Trust for the Meditation Process. Both have practiced meditation for many years.

All programs are held at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, unless otherwise noted.

MEDITATION

STIRRINGS I thank the women who came before me, who, as they stirred sugar into tea and lemon into lentil soup, had stirrings of freedom in their chests. Some spoke of that, and some served the food silently. But all the longing conquered the long road, fed the ground, until it grew strong for me now to stand on it. Stand my ground, stand, walk, and run my ground as the master of my spirit.

LECTIO DIVINA: MORNINGS OF REFLECTION DURING ADVENT Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a “long, loving look at Scripture” says spiritual director Teresa Blythe. “It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God.” This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts for Advent, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your prayer life. Pat Jones is a spiritual director, Psychologist Emeritus, and former Benedictine. Mondays, November 27, December 4, 11, and 18, 10:00 to 11:00 am COST: Free. RSVP to 651-696-2788 or info@wisdomwayscenter.org WHEN:

GROUP SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE DURING ADVENT Group spiritual direction is a process in which people gather on a regular basis to assist one another in an ongoing awareness of Sacred Mystery in all of life. Participants seek support for their responsiveness to the Holy and agree to support others in their responsiveness as well. In this season of transition between darkness and light in both culture and church, give yourself the gift of four mornings to BE! Limited to four participants. SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR

September: Courage and Truth-telling

Introductory Workshop

Mystical experiences confound us. We’ll explore literary tricks that help us receive, integrate, recreate, and see the broader context of these encounters with the Ultimate Other.

Spiritual memoir is the practice of listening deeply to our life experiences through the creation of artful, true stories. We come more alive when we accept how our experiences have formed us and when we form something of what we’ve experienced. By writing memories with intention, we can find holiness in the details, patterns that unify our sense of self, and deep personal healing. By crafting our stories to engage the inner life of readers, we can participate in transforming our world. Join Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew for an introduction to the art and spiritual practice of writing memoir. What is memoir, and how is it different from autobiography? What makes memoir spiritual? How can the practice of writing memoir, whether for an audience or no audience, support spiritual growth? We will start with the basics, using writing exercises, readings from master writers, and conversation. We will also discuss how to sustain the practice with writing partners or small groups in hopes of launching ongoing support for new writers. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $40.00

September 30, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Monthly Writing Sessions: Second Fridays Monthly drop-in sessions focus on different aspects of writing spiritual memoir: themes that commonly arise, craft techniques, challenges and joys of the writing process, and practices for opening our work to the spirit’s movement. Sessions include writing exercises, examples from leading and emerging writers, lecture, and small group conversation. To support individual writers and writing groups in the ever-deepening practice of writing spiritual memoir, time is included for participant questions.

16

“Only one thing is more frightening than speaking your truth,” Audre Lorde wrote, “and that is not speaking.” Memoir writing is essentially truth-telling. We’ll learn techniques to facilitate courageous honesty on the page—and in life.

October: Mysticism

November: Holy Sexuality

We’ll venture into the realm of sexuality—desire, identity, energy, relationship, pain, pleasure—as a holy, life-giving source. What do sexual experiences teach us about divine movement? How can we write these with gentleness, honesty, and reverence?

December: The World Boiled Down to a Drop

Zora Neale Hurston wrote of one character, “She was the world and the heavens boiled down to a drop.” We’ll explore the holographic nature of memoir: Our small stories contain big truths. How can we reconstitute memories on the page so they hold both the vast universe and our beloved particulars? Writing instructor and spiritual director Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew is the author of Writing the Sacred Journey: The Art and Practice of Spiritual Memoir; the forthcoming Living Revision: Opening the Writer’s Art; and many other books, essays, and short memoirs. Her work explores the intersections between spiritual growth and the creative process. More at www.elizabethjarrettandrew.com. Fridays, September 8, October 13, November 10, December 8, 1:30 to 3:30 pm COST: $100.00 for the series; $30.00 per session WHEN:

Introductory workshop is not a prerequisite for the monthly writing sessions.

All programs are held at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, unless otherwise noted.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES SPIRITUAL MEMOIR “SEED WRITING” SESSIONS Third Fridays Develop your writing as a spiritual practice in drop-in sessions where we write in community, share writing, and learn tools of the craft. Using prompts based on a monthly theme, we’ll make space for memories to emerge on the page, to enter others’ hearts, and to grow into projects. Together we’ll participate in generative silence and celebrate the sacred nature of our life stories. September: Courage and Truth-telling October: Mysticism November: Holy Sexuality December: The World Boiled Down to a Drop Facilitators: Elizabeth Fletcher holds an MFA in Writing from Hamline University and writes fiction and nonfiction. Her work has appeared in The Literary Bohemian, Sea Stories, and Confrontation. She is dedicated to helping writers explore wellness through creativity. Liz Olds was raised in Virginia and has traveled the country in a search for her right path both spiritual and physical. Now living in Minneapolis, she writes her way through joys and challenges, developing her relationship with God, friends, and two cats. REVISION REVIVAL: A CELEBRATION OF TRANSFORMATION AND WRITING What’s the most dynamic, surprising, and spiritually expansive part of writing? Revision! Come hear testimonials about this oft-maligned stage of writing and how deeply writers’ lives are changed by it. We’ll gain insight into revision techniques and celebrate revision’s potential to open every writer’s heart, no matter the level of experience. P.S. Duffy, Kyoko Katayama, Susan Power, and Vanessa Ramos will share stories and readings, and Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew will launch her new book Living Revision: A Writer’s Craft as Spiritual Practice. P.S. Duffy lives in Rochester, Minnesota and is the author of several books, including The Cartographer of No Man’s Land, a Barnes & Noble Discover selection and a finalist for the international Dayton Literary Peace. Kyoko Katayama’s poems have appeared in Asian American Renaissance Journal and Intersecting Circles: The Voices of Hapa Women in Poetry and Prose, and an excerpt of her memoir-in-progress was published in Where the Tree Falls, the Forest Rises: Stories of Death and Renewal. She is a psychotherapist in St. Paul and a senior member at Common Ground Meditation Center. Read about Susan Power on page 5. WALKING IN HARMONY: A LABYRINTH JOURNEY

COLORFUL AND CREATIVE: FINGER LABYRINTH FUN

Second Fridays, September-December

Creating labyrinths for finger walking is a spiritual process that yields a usable labyrinth that can be an art piece or a oneof-kind gift of functional art. All materials and instruction provided. No experience necessary. Come with a creative spirit and go home with a 12” x 12” completed labyrinth—a holiday gift to yourself or another special someone.

In the midst of daily challenges and conflicts within our greater communities, cultivating a spirit of harmony and peace is a gift for yourself and the world. You are invited to walk the labyrinth indoors or outdoors at Carondelet Center, whether this is your first walk or you are developing a spiritual practice. After a brief opening reflection, you are welcome to walk as often as you wish. There will be space for writing and artistic play as well as time for quiet prayer and meditation. Facilitators: Marilyn Larson has been making labyrinths since 1996. She creates labyrinths for personal and public spaces in a variety of media, including the labyrinth for the Spiritual Center at Hennepin County Medical Center. Advanced Veriditas Certified Facilitator MJ McGregor, PhD, introduces and facilitates labyrinth walks nationally and in Chartres Cathedral, France. MJ leads pilgrimages in Chartres, where she is a seasonal resident, and co-guided a walking pilgrimage from Paris to Chartres Cathedral. Professional labyrinth designer and builder Lisa Gidlow Moriarty has created hundreds of labyrinths, from room-size portable canvases to large outdoor concrete installations. Her work can be found in city parks, schools, hospitals, churches and private gardens across the US. Lisa also leads workshops, retreats and pilgrimages to sacred sites. As the new year begins, how do we courageously open our hearts and minds not just to what we know is coming but also to the mysteries and surprises of the unknown? How do we name our intentions for the year ahead when so much is unseen, uncertain? Inspired by poetry, stories, images and ancient wisdom teachings, we’ll use guided writing, conversation and other reflective activities to cultivate our courageous engagement with the unknowns of the year ahead and our creative participation in shaping what emerges over time. For writers and nonwriters alike.

NURTURING THE SACRED WITHIN: A WINTER RETREAT Curious about the ancient metaphysical Chakra System? Come spend a weekend exploring it! The Chakras, sacred centers of energy placed within the body by the Divine, act like compasses telling us the what and why of our life’s experiences. On our life’s journey the chakras guide us like a map. The Chakra System diagrams the interrelationship between various aspects of our multidimensional universe. Like a portal, it helps connect our inner and outer worlds, helping us become aligned – spiritually, mentally, emotionally and physically. This retreat explores the philosophy and practices of the Chakra System, one of the many sacred gifts given to us by God to be understood, nurtured and practiced in our spiritual journey. Experience its value in your own journey, practice and ministry.

WARMTH The millions of migrating birds – of every color of feather -that crossed over our homes like mountains of songs escaping to warm weather — the endless miles ahead of them not mattering, that they may die on the journey not mattering, only warmth mattering — only warmth taught me not to be cold-hearted.

Facilitator: Corrina Thomas, DMin, a Franciscan Sister of Perpetual Adoration, is passionate about an evolutionary spirituality that sees the Divine as the primary causality for creation and evolution as a physical manifestation of the process of Divine

SOLOMON’S TENT “As a child I was frightened by the images from my family photo album,” says Syrian American artist Osama Esid. “I was unable to understand the images of people with piercing eyes and of blurred children. Most frightening of all was the thought those people lived in a world that had lost its colors. In 1977, a new form of photograph appeared, square and colorful, in the family photo album. For my father, it was the instant gratification of the Polaroid camera that made him so happy. For me, the Polaroid brought the answer of knowing where the colors came from. But it also raised another question. ‘How did the colors get inside?’ This became my interest in technical photography.” With his Polaroid camera, Esid met and photographed Syrian families living in the Adana refugee camp in Turkey. Through Esid’s photos and stories, come meet the residents of Solomon’s Tent and share their dignity amid duress. IRAQ IS FLYING Jamal Penjweny’s photographs of the Iraqi conflict have been published around the world. But at the peak of the conflict, frustrated that war was the world’s only lens on his country, he left photojournalism and began focusing on his artwork. To show another dimension of Iraq—its life and future and resilient people—he captures ordinary children, men and women, US and Iraqi soldiers all leaping into the air. Artist: Iraqi Kurdish photographer, sculptor, painter, war artist and filmmaker Jamal Penjweny was born in Iraqi Kurdistan in 1981. WHEN:

Jumping was my dream when I was a child. I wanted to fly through a highest jump to watch my house and the road from the sky and to see the entire city where I was born. It never happened! I had no chance to have a flight by airplane even once in my childhood. Now! I can see my city and even all Iraq from the tiny window of the airplane, but everything looks different. When I was a child, I used to jump with my friends for joy and happiness. I only dreamt of watching my place from height for no reason. But now! We are flying in a big competition and we all have forgotten the beauty of the games we had in childhood. 22

O ANTIPHONS: ADVENT NAMES OF GOD Seven short verses are sung before the Magnificat during the Evening Prayer of the Church on the seven days before the vigil of Christmas. Each begins with the exclamation “O”. Each ends with a plea for the Messiah to come. These O Antiphons, as they are known, were composed in the seventh or eighth century when monks put together texts from the Old Testament which looked forward to the coming of our salvation. They form a rich mosaic of scriptural images, and became very popular in the Middle Ages. Holmberg’s images invite a transformation from the traditional O Antiphons into the context of evolutionary cosmology. Poetry by Joan Mitchell, CSJ, complements these images celebrating the incarnation of God as one of us in Jesus. Artist: Ansgar Holmberg, CSJ, studied with renowned liturgical artist Ade Bethune. Holmberg’s color-saturated works are more reminiscent of folk art than conventional religious images. Her art arises from her own spiritual journey and life changes. Her interpretations of themes are not fixed in the manner of icons, but ever changing through time. WHEN:

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Spiritual Direction is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with the divine. In spiritual direction, space is created for one to learn and grow in their spirituality. The person seeking direction shares stories of his or her encounters of the divine, or how he or she is experiencing spiritual issues.

A POEM MADE OF WATER The biology teacher said that people, all people, are made mostly of water.

R

W O • • • • • •

And I understood that all of us, like water, have been through so much: Fell from the sky, spent nights in the middle of a dark ocean, cleaned dirt out of clothes, and dishes of all kinds. Like water, we had to freeze in winters and simmer under covers and be put in cubes that are hit countless times on kitchen counters. And I understood why when someone’s tears fall I feel.
