WELCOME

COMMUNITY

“ It’s not by chance that the word community contains unity. Our possibility is rooted in the very word. For community is an ever-potent seed waiting for our effort and care to animate what we have in common, so we can share our understanding and experience in our time on Earth.” – MARK NEPO Like a seed, community calls for care and attention. Community emerges and comes to fullness as we animate, observe, reflect, listen, and seek to understand. It is both beyond our grasp and yet as close as breath—a moment in time or a lifetime. Community invites us to be open and live life together knowing our capacity to harm and to love. Community requires tending. We dedicate this season to this essential task. We will sharpen our skills and cultivate our abilities to recognize and nurture the many ways all creation is connected.

OUR MISSION

Rooted in Spirit, our challenge and hope is to commit to encourage seeds of community. The artists, theologians, writers, musicians, teachers, and justice and peace makers in these pages invite us to explore and practice the work of being and supporting the tapestry of all life. Community—our possibility. Come be part it. Rev. Barbara Lund, Director

HEDGEROW INITIATIVE

The Hedgerow Initiative offers sustained, systematic programming in feminist theological education, spiritual integration, and leadership for a just and holy world. In a particular way, the Initiative highlights the scholarship of women who since the 1950s have worked to reclaim women’s presence and significance in scripture, church, history, theology and culture. The Initiative takes its name from the hedgerow schools in Ireland that kept alive the language, faith, culture and community of the people during the time of the British penal codes. A hedgerow is a biosphere and a haven.

LIVING LUKE’S GOSPEL TODAY: CONTINUING JESUS’ MISSION Interpretation matters. The insights readers find in the scriptures depend on the questions we bring to the text. The bible can seem hopelessly dated, silencing women, accepting slavery, using male images of God, but as women have become theologians and scripture scholars their new methods actively engage today’s readers in critical and creative dialog with scripture.

CSJ, a Sister of St. Joseph from Cleveland, Ohio, and author of Crispina and Her Sisters, Women and Authority in Early Christianity. Her research on early Christian women explores visual imagery found on burial artifacts of prominent early Christian women in the first four centuries and their authority and influence. Texts: NRSV New Testament; Luke’s Gospel, Written for Us by Joan Mitchell, CSJ and other articles provided throughout the course. Book available at Wisdom Ways. Syllabus at wisdomwayscenter.org Instructors: Joan Mitchell, CSJ, Ph.D; Rev. Barbara Lund; Andrea Pearson Tande. MA. Guest lecturers: Nancy Heitzeg, Ph.D, and others.

What really happened is a historical question. Which version of a parable is oldest is a redaction question about how the scriptures were woven together. Which son is lost, the prodigal or the elder brother, is a literary question about characters in a parable. A feminist theologian sees God’s intent for all women in Jesus straightening up the bent over woman. A liberation theologian laughs with Luke at the Rich Fool’s full granaries and embraces Jesus’ mission to raise up the poor. Nine sessions explore the gospel stories and teachings unique to Luke. Two sessions explore its sequel, the Acts of the Apostles, especially house churches and early Christian women such as Tabitha, Lydia, Phoebe, and Priscilla. We’ll also explore ministries today that continue Jesus’ mission to the poor, the imprisoned, the indebted, and oppressed in our midst. The April 29 session will feature Christine Schenk, 4

Sample topics: * Great Joy for All People: The Birth of Two Mothers and Two Sons * What Do You See and Hear? What is the #MeToo Movement Teaching us? * Journey to Jerusalem, Crossing Borders and Barriers * Lydia and Her House: Priscilla and the Universal Praise that Is Her Due WHEN: Mondays, February 11 through May 6,

BACKS AGAINST THE WALL: THE HOWARD THURMAN STORY Film and Conversation Come learn about the extraordinary life and legacy of one of the most important religious figures of the 20th century. The grandson of slaves, Howard Thurman became a “spiritual foundation” for the Civil Rights Movement, inspiring leaders from Martin Luther King, Jr, to Jesse Jackson and Congressman John Lewis. When he met Mohandas Gandhi in the 1930s, Gandhi suggested it would be through the African-American experience that the non-violence resistance movement could take on global significance. When Thurman returned to America, his writings and speeches planted the early seeds for the non-violent Civil Rights Movement. Co-Sponsored by St. Catherine University, Volunteers of America-MN/WI, and Wisdom Ways.

Conversation panel: Facilitator Vivian Jenkins Nelsen is the co-founder of INTER-RACE, a diversity think tank located at Augsburg College. A nationally recognized diversity practitioner, trainer, consultant, planner and researcher, she speaks to thousands of people each year on leadership, change, and diversity and teaches and publishes on group facilitation, diversity, conflict and grief. Paula Hart is president and CEO of Volunteers of America-Minnesota & Wisconsin, where she helps sustain a 122year legacy as the organization serves more than 21,500 people annually with a mission to help them gain self-reliance, dignity, and hope. A St. Kate’s alumna with an M.A. in Organizational Leadership, she has long focused on serving children and adults with disabilities. Cynthia Bailey Manns is an experienced spiritual director with a background in social work, human development, spirituality, and spiritual development. Cynthia has served as adjunct faculty in post graduate programs, campus ministry, and is the director of adult formation at St.

A gifted and prolific writer and one of the great preachers of his era, Thurman is also remembered for helping launch The Fellowship Church for All People in San Francisco, the nation’s first interracial, intercultural church and a vision of a radically inclusive community. Backs against the Wall is produced and directed by Martin Doblmeier. Doblmeier will introduce the film. A facilitated conversation among five Twin Cities leaders will explore the vision that Thurman lived and worked towards.

COMING TOGETHER: EXPLORING, EXPERIENCING AND EXPANDING COMMUNITY

Antoinette S. Williams is a retired mental health practitioner and co-creator with her daughter of Rituals Inc., a small business in the Minneapolis Midtown Global Market that has evolved from introducing handmade body care products to serving as a hub frequented by people seeking problem-solving assistance, camaraderie, community and sometimes just a little TLC.

We know how important community is in bringing our whole selves to flower. And still it can be hard to find or create communities that will welcome us just as we are. This four-part series of guided writing, conversation, embodied practices and other creative activities invites you to discover a deeper understanding of community and what is needed to build it and find belonging in it.

WHEN: Thursdays,

February 28, March 14 and 28, April 11, 6:00 to 9:00 pm beginning with a simple soup and bread meal together. COST: $45.00 to $95.00 for the series. Offer what you can to support community.

Informed by readings from Mark Nepo’s book, More Together than Alone, and other authors including Robin Wall Kimmerer, adrienne maree brown, Thomas King and Rebecca Solnit, we will together remember and imagine our way into a story of community in which we all belong. How better to prepare for Mark Nepo’s spring workshops than to come together in this circle and reflect on the gifts and challenges of community? For community leaders who seek new insights in their role of nurturing community and belonging as well as all who seek their own belonging. Consider joining the program with a partner, friend, colleague or neighbor to share the experience with you. Facilitators: Karen Hering, author of Writing to Wake the Soul and consulting literary minister at Unity Church-Unitarian, leads retreats and programs that bring inner truths into conversation with the world we share. Her forthcoming book, Living in the Between: a thresholder’s guide to personal and global change, invites readers to discover and depend on community in times of great change. karenhering.com 6

AN EVENING WITH MARK NEPO: MORE TOGETHER THAN ALONE “ It is both comforting and challenging to realize that no one person can wrestle from the Earth the song of how we can survive together, and no one voice can sing that chorus. We need each other more than ever.” * M ARK NEPO

What brings us together? What throws us apart? How do we inhabit what we have in common as well as what makes us unique, in ways that deepen our daily practice of service and compassion?

Beloved poet, teacher, and storyteller Mark Nepo attempts to answer these questions in his new book, More Together than Alone: Discovering the Power and Spirit of Community in Our Lives and in the World. A consummate storyteller who has been called “one of the finest spiritual guides of our time,” Mark will share stories and lessons of community gathered from across cultures and history, with the aim of affirming that, despite the hardships always present, we are more together than alone. We’ll learn how human beings find each other, work together, and create moments of community that can last an hour, a week, or across generations—and whose impact can be timeless for what they teach us about caring for one another. A book signing will follow this timely presentation and conversation. WHEN: Thursday,

April 25, 7:00 to 8:30 pm, followed by a book signing. COST: $25.00

“ Mark Nepo returns us to an enduring truth: We must love one another—or perish. Just as medieval monks kept literacy alive during the dark ages, he shows us how we too must keep alive the literacy of the heart, no matter how deafening the noise of hate.” * VALARIE KAUR, SIKH ACTIVIST AND FOUNDER OF THE REVOLUTIONARY LOVE PROJECT

Mark Nepo devotes his writing and teaching to the journey of inner transformation and the life of relationship. Author of 20 books and 14 audioprojects, he is a columnist for Spirituality and Health magazine, participated in Oprah Winfrey’s The Life You Want Tour in 2014, and has been named one of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People. MORE TOGETHER THAN ALONE: SERVICE AND COMPASSION Join Mark Nepo for a deeper conversation and reflection around recognizing and encouraging community. Explore the power of community, how the life of connection can add more meaning to our lives, and how to develop care-based communities. “Why tend to all this?” asks Nepo. “Because somewhere another child is being born who will ask us things we don’t yet know, and we must have some sense of how to account for our time on Earth. It is both comforting and challenging to realize that no one person can wrestle from the Earth the song of how we can survive together and no one voice can sing that chorus…we need each other more than ever.” WHEN: Friday, COST: $65.00

WOMEN OF WISDOM: WOMEN IN COMMUNITY

NOW THE LEAVES

Come and explore stories of women in the Christian tradition whose lives demonstrate the unity and diversity of community. What unites their challenging and seemingly disparate stories is how these women support each other in life and in death. Each session will include readings, input, conversation, and ritual.

Now the leaves speak gold and scarlet All the birds flock and sing Spirit whispers in dying grasses Calls us to raise our hymn.

May 16 - MARY AND ELIZABETH Perhaps the earliest story of community in the Christian Scriptures is the story of Mary of Nazareth and her kinswoman Elizabeth in The Visitation (Luke 1: 39-56). As they with their unexpectedly pregnant bodies embrace and celebrate one another, they honor each other as well as their unborn children. Community is formed as a child leaps in Elizabeth’s womb and Mary sings God’s praises in the longest passage that comes from the lips of a woman in the whole of the Christian testament. With music, art and ritual, we will celebrate the May feast day of The Visitation.

We are gathered, we give praise To the One spinning wisdom, From which we come And to which we all return. We remember the women Who were ember, flare and ash. Blinding light, searing dark, Coax and summon What survived and what was lost.

May 23 - THE BURNING TIMES Many centuries later, many women in both formal and informal communities came to be seen as a threat in the political and ecclesiastical worlds. During “the burning times”, one of the most painful chapters in Christian history, tens of thousands of women lost their lives. Together we’ll view the film The Burning Times, produced by the National Film Board of Canada, explore the research of scholar Anne Llewellyn Barstow, and honor our foremothers who were persecuted.

Protect us in this descent, Where we must burn away Despair and rage, and search again For you who have no name.

May 30 – JOAN OF ARC Come celebrate Joan’s feast day and remember the story of the patron saint of France burned as a heretic at the age of nineteen in 1431. Joan’s mother Isabelle Romée was one of her strongest defenders and instrumental in having Joan’s guilty verdict nullified in 1456. Drawing on transcripts of Joan’s trial and research of scholar Anne Llewellyn Barstow, we’ll explore Joan as mystic, shaman, and heretic, the role played by Saints Margaret and Catherine, Joan’s spiritual companions, and how Joan the visionary has been invoked by Catholic and Protestant women seeking to claim their own voice in church and society. Mary Kaye Medinger is a lifelong educator, writer, editor, spiritual director and retreat leader with a particular interest in women’s spirituality, especially Mariology. A consociate of the Sisters of St. Joseph, she has spent nearly 40 years in various ministerial positions in parish, diocesan and ecumenical settings. 8

We too will return Burning from the inside out, Blazing with our own truth, With our tongues of flame To serve the Illumination.

SHE/HE/THEY/WE: EXPLORING THE GALAXY OF GENDER

OPENING THE EYE OF THE HEART: JESUS AND THE UNITIVE WISDOM

How does gender shape who you are, how you perceive others, and how the world understands you — or doesn’t? As society wakes up to the exquisite variety of gender identity, you are invited to explore what that means. Transgender people are experiencing unprecedented momentum as well as dangerous backlash in their fight for safety, visibility, and acceptance, and it is more important than ever to show up as an informed and active ally to people of all genders. Mother-and-son team Karen Hering and Catherine Charles Hammond weave together spiritual reflection, personal narrative, music, and practical information in order to open our hearts, minds, and actions to the beautiful diversity of gender as it is lived in the world today.

This public talk will explore the unitive and contemplative wisdom at the heart of the teachings of Jesus. We’ll look at the ways the Church has lost sight of Jesus’ own path of transformation, and how we can reclaim and reset it within an emerging evolutionary and interspiritual paradigm today. Drawing on insights from Christian visionaries ranging from Cynthia Bourgeault to Teilhard de Chardin, we’ll imagine a Jesus-path for the 21st century. The Rev. Matthew Wright is an Episcopal priest, writer, and retreat leader working to renew the Christian Wisdom tradition within a wider interspiritual framework. He serves as priest-in-charge at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Woodstock, NY and is a teacher for Northeast Wisdom and The Contemplative Society. Matthew lives with his wife, Yanick, alongside the brothers of Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, NY.

“ I’ve learned that every mortal will taste death. But only some will taste life.” * RUMI

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ENNEAGRAM: 9 WAYS TO MOVE FROM TRANCE TO DANCE We often get lulled into thinking that things will get easier if only our outer circumstances change. The Enneagram is a map for shifting our inner lives so that we flourish more in our outer lives. It is a system for self-development that uses a nine-pointed figure to portray nine basic personality styles. Each type views life through a different lens. Each type falls into a trance that is unique to it. And, each type has a unique pathway to freedom. Weaving together ancient wisdom, contemporary psychology, and contemplative spirituality, the Enneagram is a tool that transforms lives. Session One: The Human Challenge: Awakening to the Trance Explore the history of the Enneagram; the human struggle to move from our small entranced selves to our vital essential selves; the model of the Enneagram; and a first look at the nine types. Session Two: Exploring the Nine Types: Nine Pathways to Freedom Take a deeper look into the nine types: the various ruts that each type falls into; the pathways out of the ruts; and the unique gifts that each type possesses.

Session Three: The Spirituality of the Enneagram: Joining the Liberating Dance The Enneagram’s foundation is an ancient, contemplative spirituality that invites us into abundance by letting go of our trances. Each type blossoms into and beyond a specific virtue. The end journey of the Enneagram leads us not to typing ourselves, but to living differently in the world as we embrace these nine liberating qualities. Facilitator: Scott McRae has been involved in spiritual work in various forms for 30 years, and feels like he’s just getting started. His journey has taken him from parish ministry through campus ministry, hospital chaplaincy, and spiritual direction. EXPLORING THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY TOGETHER “ There were certainly things I admired about my father, but I didn’t have any models of the kind of man I wanted to be, and I think that’s common for a lot of men....I’ve spent a lifetime being greeted by people who didn’t know how to put together that I was both a poet and a strong man. * M ARK NEPO, INTERVIEWED IN PSYCHOLOGY TODAY

Come together among a group of curious men for a threepart book study and spiritual sharing around Mark Nepo’s latest book, More Together than Alone (read more on page 6). Part of a men’s group for many years, Nepo explores the power of community and practical ways to find common connection—a poignant and timely corrective to the discord and fear directing much of our current public discourse. Reading the book together, we will reflect on, personalize and seek to expand men’s relationship within their communities. Our three facilitators each bring a special background and appreciation for exploring how community-building begins among a committed group gathering to explore and discuss vibrant ideas.

MEDITATION

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER

We rarely think of the air we breathe, yet it is in us and around us all the time. In similar fashion, the presence of God penetrates us, is all around us, is always embracing us.

CHRISTIAN MEDITATION DURING LENT Lent is a time of preparation. Through prayer and fasting, we ready ourselves to enter into the celebration of the central Christian mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Wisdom Ways offers varied ways to move toward the transforming experience of this sacred event. Ash Wednesday Meditation Ritual

* THOMAS KEATING

MEDITATION Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer in which we move beyond words, thoughts, and images. We open ourselves to God’s mysterious and silent presence within us and it becomes more and more the reality of our lives. From this place of prayer we engage in our work in the world. This spring, Wisdom Ways invites you to experience Christian contemplative prayer.

The ancient ritual of being marked with ashes that begins the season of Lent calls us back to ourselves, to our roots in Earth and in the stardust from which the universe expanded. The ashes are a sign of our will to live anew, mending torn relationships, healing damaged commitments, and embracing Holy Mystery. In the quiet of Ash Wednesday evening, we will gather to bless and receive our Lenten ashes and enter into a communal time of contemplative prayer. WHEN: Wednesday, March 6, 7:00 to 8:00 pm WHERE: Our Lady of Presentation Chapel COST: Registration is not required and the ritual

is free.

Tuesday Noonday Meditations These weekly meditation sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation.

TUESDAY EVENING MEDITATION

Tuesdays, March 12 to April 16, 12:00 to 12:40 pm and 7:00 to 7:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free. WHEN:

During these times of prayer, we will sit in silent meditation with others. Meditating together is a way of deepening and supporting our personal practice. The weekly sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. Following meditation, there will an optional short introduction to Christian Meditation for those new to this form of prayer. Come as often as you are able. WHEN: Tuesdays, January 8 to June 11, 7:00 to 7:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free.

Morning Meditation Retreat This Lenten morning retreat provides a more extended and focused time to deepen our existing practice of meditation. Our morning in silence will include a pattern of sitting and walking meditations, mindful movements, and chanting. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $15.00

“ As we enter the path of transformation, the most valuable thing we have working in our favor is our yearning.” * CYNTHIA BOURGEAULT

LECTIO DIVINA: MORNINGS OF REFLECTION DURING LENT Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a “long, loving look at Scripture” says spiritual director Teresa Blythe. “It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God.” This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts for Lent, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your prayer life. 16

All programs are held at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, unless otherwise noted.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE: A COLLECTIVE MOVEMENT EXPERIENCE Faith, Hope and Love are the intangible qualities that guide us through uncertainty and loss. They are woven into our disposition and how we interpret the world. Rational routes to faith and hope rarely satisfy because these qualities, like trauma, reside within the automatic responses of our body-mind. Come cultivate your ability to feel faithful, hopeful, and loving by engaging your body in a collective movement experience. Together, we will learn the slow, repeating symmetrical pattern of the Faith, Hope and Love dance created by Armenian dancer Shakeh Tchilingirian and explore its many healing properties. The circle form, the pulsing step, the way we join hands all awaken our hearts and connections to each other. Based on traditional Armenian steps, this dance allows for continuity with those who can no longer be heard and honors the value of all lives lost to injustice and inhumane treatment. We will explore how significant the community of a dancing circle can be for expressing what cannot be spoken in words and healing collective trauma. Come and experience a new way to nourish your ability to encounter the world with the spirit of faith hope and love. All movement abilities are welcome, as this dance can be experienced seated as well as standing. To learn more about the creator of the Faith, Hope and Love dance, the healing properties of Armenian dance, and the significance of engaging the body in experiences to help resolve trauma, read the online description of this course at wisdomwayscenter.org Emily Jarrett Hughes is a healing artist and cultural activist. She teaches and performs traditional dances as a tool for transformation and is also a Certified Spring Forest Qigong healer. She leads workshops and retreats on the intersections between embodied theology, cosmic evolution, water and social transformation. Through her work she seeks to honor

the prayers of her European ancestors and the ancestors of the place where she lives, Mni Sota Makoce, “where the waters reflect the heavens,” in the traditional territory of the Dakota. Emily blogs at wisdomdances.com. WHEN: Tuesday, COST: $20.00

WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR Introductory Workshop Spiritual memoir is the practice of listening deeply to life experiences through the creation of artful, true stories. We come more alive when we accept how our experiences have formed us and when we form something from what we’ve experienced. By writing memoirs with intention, we can find holiness in the details, patterns that unify our sense of self, and deep personal healing. By crafting our stories to engage the inner lives of readers, we participate in transforming our world. Join Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew for an introduction to the art and spiritual practice of writing memoir. What is memoir, and how is it different from autobiography? What makes memoir spiritual? How can the practice of writing memoir, whether for an audience or no audience, support spiritual growth? We will start with the basics, using writing exercises, readings from master writers, and conversation. We will also discuss how to sustain the practice with writing partners or small groups in hopes of launching ongoing support for new writers. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $40.00

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR

Monthly Writing Sessions: Second Fridays Monthly drop-in sessions focus on different aspects of writing spiritual memoir: themes that commonly arise, craft techniques, challenges and joys of the writing process, and practices for opening our work to the Spirit’s movement. Sessions include writing exercises, examples from leading and emerging writers, lecture, and small group conversation. January: Community in the Creative Process It takes a village to raise a child—and to raise a story. We’ll honor Wisdom Ways’ winter/spring theme by exploring how community participates in our spiritual memoir writing. Who are the many audiences already at work within our unread drafts? How can we write about loved ones honestly and lovingly? How might writing for an audience become a radical act of hospitality? If every spiritual journey worth its salt lands in community, what does this mean for our most intimate, creative work? February: Art as Theft: Imitation Writing Pablo Picasso famously said that all art is theft. We’ll test the boundaries of plagiarism by fearlessly borrowing gifted writers’ ideas, trying on a variety of voices, and imitating skillful techniques. Everyone who writes can participate in a conversation with other writers that transcends time and place. Join us for an afternoon of playful experimentation! March: All My Relations Our personal stories are intricately linked with the lives of our ancestors. Guest author Diane Wilson will guide us to write the stories of those who have come before us, not as a simple family history but as a healing, sacred exploration of our own stories. She will also read excerpts from and discuss the writing of her memoir, Spirit Car: Journey to a Dakota Past, which traces her family’s ancestry over five generations. April: Parts in the Whole: Form Every bit of creation has an inherent, unique form—including 18

our stories. We’ll experiment with structural possibilities for spiritual memoir, reflect on how form follows function in writing, and practice listening for emergent unity within the fragments of our memories. May: Childhood, Revisited Our spiritual journeys find their source and direction in our youngest years, when our first experiences indelibly marked us. How can we revisit early memories with compassion, curiosity, and humility? June: Community and Revision Stephen King says, “Write with the door closed, rewrite with the door open”—but we can open that door slowly and deliberately. To conclude our season of celebrating community, we’ll explore life-giving ways to welcome others’ eyes as a means for re-seeing our work. How can we preserve our sense of safety, freedom, and exploration in the writing process while also sharing our writing? Might our memoirs help us foster sacred connections to others? Writing instructor and spiritual director Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew is the author of Writing the Sacred Journey: The Art and Practice of Spiritual Memoir; Living Revision: A Writer’s Craft as Spiritual Practice; and many other books, essays, and short memoirs. Her work explores the intersections between spiritual growth and the creative process. More at elizabethjarrettandrew.com. Guest writer Diane Wilson is a Minnesota author and Mdewakanton descendant. Her first book, Spirit Car: Journey to a Dakota Past retraces her family’s Dakota heritage across five generations and won a 2006 Minnesota Book Award. Her second book is Beloved Child: A Dakota Way of Life.

Fridays, January 11, February 8, March 8, April 12, May 10, June 14, 1:30 to 3:30 pm COST: $120.00 for the series; $30.00 per session Introductory workshop is not a prerequisite for the monthly writing sessions. WHEN:

ART EXHIBITS

PRACTICING THE PRESENCE OF PLACE

A selection of landscapes from Minnesota brush painter Bob Schmitt, who interprets iconic Minnesota scenes through his training in and practice of Chinese brush painting. Includes his monumental five-panel depiction of Minnehaha Falls in winter.

There are so many words and frameworks one can use to explain spiritual experience. For me being outside in almost any setting is a sacred experience. As an artist and a writer, I find myself pondering how is the spirit present here today. What can I feel of the divine in this particular place and time? I try to listen deeply not only with my ears, but also with my eyes and my heart. And attempt to etch that onto my soul. My art is the tangible evidence of that experience. — Bob Schmitt

painting the presence of place “I have left off all devotions and prayers which are not required for me, and I occupy myself solely with keeping myself in God’s holy presence. I do this simply by keeping my attention on God and by generally and lovingly aware of him. This could be called practicing the presence of God moment by moment, or to put it better, a silent, secret and nearly unbroken conversation of the soul with God.

Artist’s process I am often asked if I create these painting on site, sitting by the falls or the lakes. I do not. They are not created on site. They are paintings from my memory of these places.

Sometimes this conversation gives me great contentment and inner joy. But it also often gives me outward joy that is so great, that in order to restrain it and keep from revealing it, I am forced into childish actions that appear more like madness than devotion.”

They are not photographic in the sense that you could actually go and find these exact locations as I present them. My goal is to capture the essence of place as it lives in my memory and hopefully to touch that place where it lives in your memory.

— The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence

If I am successful, they may evoke a sensation that feels more real than if they were photographic representations. — Bob Schmitt Artist: Bob Schmitt is a Quaker and a student and teacher of Chinese calligraphy and painting who lives and paints a stone’s throw from Minnehaha Falls. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

As Sara Thomsen reminds us in her song “If changes are to come, there are things that must be done,” and so we “search for something worth believing in.” Accompany us as we recognize and acknowledge the Creator’s Grace in our lives throughout the wheel of the year. Rituals will include readings, music, silence and prayer.

Spiritual Direction is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with the divine. In spiritual direction, space is created for one to learn and grow in their spirituality. The person seeking direction shares stories of his or her encounters of the divine, or how he or she is experiencing spiritual issues.
