WELCOME
HOSPITALITY
“On the hilltop, on the road, at the crossways, Wisdom takes her stand. She has built herself a house . . . prepared her wine, and laid her table.”
25 years ago the midwives of Wisdom Ways took time to discern a deep and holy practice of Hospitality. Created as a place to explore, offer, and engage profound inclusion and care at the intersections of faith and life, Wisdom Ways continues to be a place of hospitality in ever widening circles of spirituality. Hospitality is born out of our deep human need to be welcomed and to welcome. Hospitality beckons us to live into relationships with compassion, courage and patience. Wisdom is there to encourage us; Her table is prepared at the crossways and in places of vitality. At the heart of hospitality is community and in community we are changed. Everyone is invited to be present and flourish!
OUR MISSION
Proverbs 8:2, 9:2
Like Wisdom, the midwives of Wisdom Ways set tables of hospitality courageously and compassionately. For the past twenty-five years, thousands have been inspired and nurtured. People have grown in faith and widened their spiritual path and community. Our 25th anniversary calls us to celebrate, deepen our commitment to hospitality and give it real flesh. May we know ourselves as midwives, at home with ambiguity and in the complexity of new birth. May we be open to transformation that yields wholeness and healing for all life. Come, let us explore together holy hospitality this season! Rev. Barbara Lund, Director

CONTEMPLATION AND COMMUNITY: A GATHERING OF FRESH VOICES FOR A LIVING TRADITION
WIDENING THE CIRCLE
Co-hosted with Wisdom Ways by St. Catherine University, Episcopal House of Prayer, University of St. Thomas, and Trust for Christian Meditation A resurgence of Christian contemplative living by emerging young practitioners is creating a new framework for spirituality inside and outside of formal religion. Contemplation and Community: A Gathering of Fresh Voices for a Living Tradition introduces these diverse voices, who reflect globally on the gifts, challenges, differences and commonalities of Christian contemplation today for communities and people of faith. Join several of these contemplative leaders for a weekend focused on the contemplative tradition. Friday night begins with a public conversation and book launch of Contemplation and Community. You’ll have the opportunity to talk with coeditors Jessica (Jessie) M. Smith and Fr. Stuart Higginbotham and hear readings and reflections from other contributors. An all-day retreat on Saturday offers reflection, practice, and workshops that explore more deeply the next era of Christian contemplative movement. The day will be spent moving through three lenses of understanding contemporary Christian contemplation: Grounding in Practice, Transformation in Community, and Embodiment, Compassion and Healing. From understanding pedagogical practices of contemplation, contemplative congregational leadership development, racial dialogue and contemplation, and practices of the Eastern Orthodox-born Systema practice, each session invites participants to explore together the horizon of Christian contemplation and where the Spirit may be leading next.
4
Contemplation and Community began when founders of four contemplative centers — Fr. Richard Rohr of the Center for Action and Contemplation, Fr. Thomas Keating of Contemplative Outreach, Fr. Lawrence Freeman of The World Community for Christian Meditation, and Tilden Edwards of the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation—invited twenty young contemplative leaders to wonder, practice, and peer together into the future of Christian contemplative life. Along with Shalem’s executive director Margaret Benefiel, the 24 leaders shared a week of conversation, reflection and practice that inspired the book.
All programs are held at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, unless otherwise noted.

HOLY HOSPITALITY: ARTS AS THE DOORWAY TO THE SACRED
Artists:
For many of us the arts are a primary conduit to the Holy. We know and experience our spirituality through a hymn, a sacred text or a religious symbol. The hospitality of the arts invites us to return again to the full depth and meaning of what we believe. In this series, the arts lead us into deeper ways of encountering, exploring, and understanding not just our own tradition but the religious traditions of our neighbors. When studying other faiths, “leave room for holy envy,” said Swedish biblical scholar Krister Stendahl. In Holy Envy: Finding God in the Faith of Others, Barbara Brown Taylor describes how, while teaching Religion 101, she found something to envy in all the traditions the students study. When she taught Judaism she wanted to be a rabbi. When she taught Buddhism, she wanted to be a monk. Finding something beautiful in other faiths, she gained a greater appreciation and understanding of her own. Through presentation, experience, and hospitality, we will explore the inherent power of the arts to move us to leave room for holy envy on our own spiritual journey. Barbara Brown Taylor’s thoughts will invite us into our time together. On November 7, Nimo Farah and Aaron Silver show us how the arts are a catalyst for knowing their own tradition and how that knowing might build bridges to other traditions. Our last session explores the ways the arts and holy envy might open us to a deeper habitation of the holy. Facilitator:

Facilitator: Mary Kaye Medinger is a lifelong educator, writer, editor, spiritual director and retreat leader with a particular interest in women’s spirituality, especially Mariology. A consociate of the Sisters of St. Joseph, she has spent nearly 40 years in various ministerial positions in parish, diocesan and ecumenical settings.
CHILD OF HUMANITY: AN EXPLORATION OF THE INCARNATION
Join us for two film screenings and conversations that stretch our concept of “welcome” and “home” and the significance that listening plays. Each film reflects on real people and events and the role that open-heartedness across cultures plays.
Incarnation, according to early church teachings, is not something to believe in, but rather, something experienced. Words are inadequate to its understanding. “The Son of Humanity already exists within you,” says the Gospel of Mary Magdalene.
Burning Memories. In 1944, 75,000 Norwegians became refugees in their own country after the German occupants set fire to their homes. This 2018 film interweaves conversations between elderly Norwegians and refugee children from Syria and Sudan remembering their experiences of war and dislocation. This weekend is marked by All Saints, All Souls, Dia de los Muertos, and other commemorations of those who preceded us in time and space, prompting us to reflect on the blessings that can be offered across cultures and generations when compassion and love are primary. WHEN: Saturday, November 2, 6:30 to 8:30 pm COST: G ive a gift in honor of Wisdom Ways’ 25th anniversary.
This four-session course will be understood as a practice period where participants try this ancient way of knowing.
Roses in December. This award-winning 1982 documentary tells the story of four North American women missionaries murdered in El Salvador on December 2, 1980. Focusing specifically on the story of lay missioner Jean Donovan, who left her home and comfortable life in the U.S. to respond to the needs of war-torn Salvadorans, the film gives us a glimpse into Jean’s wide understanding of love and heart full of hospitality. Her colleagues, nuns Maura Clarke, Ita Ford and Dorothy Kazel, were her companions in life and in death. WHEN: Friday December 6, 6:30 to 8:30 pm COST: G ive a gift in honor of Wisdom Ways’ 25th

SEEDS & ROOTS: GROWING SACRED ACTIVISM FALL SOUL CONFERENCE
Living in a world faced with profound challenges from every direction—climate change, virulent racism, the suffering of children, rampant materialism—is enough to leave us feeling overwhelmed by despair, unable to find a place to begin making change. Using Seeds & Roots as our guiding metaphor, we will deepen our relationship to Ina Maka, Mother Earth, as a primary, spiritual foundation for making positive change in ourselves, our families, and our communities. Through experiential learning and activities, the Fall 2019 Soul Conference will explore how our indigenous and ancestral legacies teach us to protect what we love. We will engage the body’s wisdom through movement, music, writing, and conversation. Participants will consider ethical questions, such as: What does it mean to be a good relative? How can we see our past traumas and challenges as teachers? How can we use our gifts to make a better world for our children? Ultimately, our goal is transformation, to see ourselves as powerful change makers, engaged in sacred activism that is rooted in love and joy. The conference will be led by four dynamic women educators engaged in writing, art, farming, and biodiversity. Facilitators:
Christine Baeumler is an environmental artist and a professor in the Department of Art’s Interdisciplinary Art and Social Practice at the University of Minnesota. HEDGEROW INITIATIVE
The Hedgerow Initiative offers sustained, systematic programming in feminist theological education, spiritual integration, and leadership for a just and holy world. In a particular way, the Initiative highlights the scholarship of women who since the 1950s have worked to reclaim women’s presence and significance in scripture, church, history, theology and culture. The Initiative takes its name from the hedgerow schools in Ireland that kept alive the language, faith, culture and community of the people during the time of the British penal codes. A hedgerow is a biosphere and a haven.
INCLUSIVE GRACE: THE LIFE AND SEARCH OF TWO PASTORS Emmy Kegler and Kelly Brown Douglas explore and live out their experiences contending with gender, racial justice and sexuality. One is a millennial, identifying queer and searching for her vocation. One is a Gen X prophet, critiquing white exceptionalism and calling for racial justice and equality. Emmy Kegler is a gifted and only child who journeys through several Christians traditions to find acceptance and her vocation as a Lutheran pastor. One Coin Found is the memoir of this queer woman who falls in love with scripture and develops a “hermeneutic of the hip” in her wrestling with God. A mother with a teenage son, Kelly Brown Douglas feels the shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin as an immediate family danger, an all-too-familiar story in the black community. In Stand Your Ground, the theologian and Episcopal priest traces white exceptionalism in American history from the Massachusetts Bay Company to Manifest Destiny to the Stand Your Ground laws in Florida that protected the “watch captain” who shot Trayvon from criminal charges. The course will involve presentations, conversations, and writing prompts to explore the mystery of God in one’s own search for personal purpose and justice in our world. Sample sessions include: 10

THE ENNEAGRAM AND RELATIONSHIPS: CROSSING THE DIVIDE AND ACTIVATING OUR HIGHEST POTENTIALS TOGETHER Relationships are difficult! As the personalities of two people come together, complexities abound and expand as relationships deepen. The Enneagram is a map that leads us through and beyond our personality types. Contained in this map are road signs, of sorts, that indicate how we detour into predictable conflicts. It also points to how we can move toward a presence that is grounded and inspired, and leads to relationships that flourish. This three-part class is for individuals and partners with some previous experience of the Enneagram. Through presentations and personal and small-group reflections, we seek to deepen our self-understandings in ways that will enhance our capacities to be in healthy relationships. The goal of the classes is to move closer to essential Self so that we can evolve through our relationships. RE-CREATING OUR LIVES: LEARNING HOW TO TELL OUR MOST LIFE-GIVING STORY
Session 2: The Five Features of Healthy Relational Space
Each of us has a story that we tell ourselves about ourselves. Becoming aware of our inner narrative is crucial, because the story we tell ourselves, both consciously and unconsciously, has tremendous power over our thoughts, feelings, and actions. In many ways, this story defines our lives.
Healthy relationships occur within an energetic context that is bigger than the words we speak and the actions we take. Walks through five aspects that enhance the energetic connection and space surrounding a relationship, and looks at the unique contribution each type has for enhancing relational space, plus how we transcend our types and activate higher potentials through healthy relationships.
Re-creating our lives through the stories we tell about them is a lifelong quest. We are all being held in a limitless narrative frame: our stories and Love’s action in them are never complete or finished. In this retreat based upon her book Re-Creating a Life: Learning How to Tell Our Most Life-Giving Story, Dr. Diane Millis will guide us as we cultivate the “eyes to see and ears to hear” our most life-giving story.
Session 3: The Higher Forms of Relating with Others and the World
Facilitator: For three decades, Diane Millis has had the privilege of serving as a midwife for others as they give voice to the vast array of stories inside of them. Through teaching and advising, consulting and coaching, facilitating retreats and leading workshops and ministering as a spiritual director, she has observed, listened, and inquired as participants learn how to tell their most life-giving stories. Learn more at dianemillis.com
Relationships have the potential for significant shifts when partners engage their higher potentials together. Looks at how the 9 pathways to spiritual awareness impact relationships, exploring the concept of “co-mingling” as it relates to human and Divine relationships, and considering what it might mean to enter into a sacred relationship with the world. Facilitator: Scott McRae has been involved in spiritual work in various forms for 30 years, and feels like he’s just getting started. His journey has taken him from parish ministry through campus ministry, hospital chaplaincy, and spiritual direction. Director of Spiritual Care and Pastoral Education Supervisor for Park Nicollet Health Services, he and his wife Melanie run Sojourners Institute and its Sojourners Spiritual Guidance Program.

For Contemplative Outreach of Colorado and other venues, he conducts retreats and workshops and teaches Centering Prayer. His primary passion is offering the ministry of compassionate presence to support men from a variety of backgrounds to tend to their inner lives. To learn more about spiritual direction, contact Terry at 651-328-7675.
CENTERING PRAYER CIRCLE To foster community among participants, the Wisdom Ways Men’s Spirituality Series offers a twice a month contemplative prayer circle. Each meeting begins with 20 minutes of contemplative prayer practice using the method of Centering Prayer. resulting from a dark night experience and his seeking spiritual understanding through various wisdom sources. Brooks posits that hyper-individualism has been a misdirected search for happiness, i.e., a first mountain, and that secondmountain living represents a shift from self-centered to othercentered living. Brooks intelligently and insightfully examines commitment through vocation, marriage and healthy intimacy, how faith serves us and others, and relationship through engagement in community. Facilitators: Business owner, theologian, corporate leadership consultant, spiritual director, teacher and retreat facilitator Diane Nettifee is founder of Magis Ventures, which guides leaders and organizations to success that is measured by purpose and performance. She teaches in the Organizational Leadership program at St. Catherine University. See Terry Shaughnessy’s bio above. FALL 2019
AGING AND BECOMING Let’s explore some of the ways that poems can engage the challenges, complexities and often concealed joys of aging, our lives of “quiet desperation” with their inevitable “failures.” Poems show us ways to pay attention rather than awfulize about whatever is to come, to have compassion for our oftenanxious selves. We can think of them as parallel scriptures that enhance our lives and help us to live in contradiction, to be what Charlotte Joko Beck calls “a bigger container.” Paul Knitter writes of “a paradigm of becoming,” Huston Smith of “the kind of person we should try to become.” We’ll hear poems from a number of traditions, write together, raise any and all questions, and look for ways (to borrow from Rilke) to live those questions. We are a water invited to be wine by a grace that we can scarcely dream to imagine (but poems can help). Facilitator: Two of Michael Dennis Browne’s collections of poetry have won the Minnesota Book Award for poetry. As a librettist and lyricist he has written many texts for music, working for almost four decades with composer Stephen Paulus (To Be Certain of the Dawn, a post-Holocaust oratorio) and now Craig Hella Johnson (Considering Matthew Shepard). Professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota, his most recent collection of poetry is Chimes. WHEN: Wednesday, December 11, 7:30 to COST: $35.00, includes light breakfast

SAGIRAH SHAHID
[BEAN PIE, SWEET POTATO PIE, © BUTTERMILK PIE] A handful of summers ago when the drowsy sun peeled off my shadow between the front porch and Ummi sat in her white wicker chair, swatting mosquitos and sipping sweet tea from a reused French dressing jar, the ice clinking its soliloquy near wind chimes before she passed the jar over to me. That summer I would learn how to make the pie Ummi’s mother taught her how to make without a recipe that wasn’t also etched between breast bone and ruh how lovely, these quiet crumb trails of the South that showed up in her reflexes. In some ways, she had always been Mississppian, her water bread grinning back at us three hours into family cook-outs, her cast iron skillet basking in some gravy she summoned without measurements or occasion the memory of which, even before they could emerge with their splintering tongues, greased the tips of our fingers, their hunger-less sheen almost birthing the bloom of our lips.

MEDITATION
CHRISTIAN MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Silence is the folding of the wings of the intellect to open the door of the heart. * CATHERINE DE HUECK DOHERTY
MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer in which we move beyond words, thoughts, and images. We open ourselves to God’s mysterious and silent presence within us and it becomes more and more the reality of our lives. From this place of prayer we engage in our work in the world.
TUESDAY EVENING MEDITATION During these times of prayer, we will sit in silent meditation with others. Meditating together is a way of deepening and supporting our personal practice. The weekly sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. An optional short introduction to Christian Meditation follows for those new to this form of prayer. Come as often as you are able. Tuesdays, September 3 to December 17, 7:00 pm to 7:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free. WHEN:
CHRISTIAN MEDITATION TEACHING SESSION Becoming One with the One: An Introduction to Christian Meditation John Main, a twentieth century Benedictine Monk, reintroduced to spiritual seekers the rich Christian tradition 18
of meditation. Come explore his teachings on meditation as a way of contemplative prayer, the practice of meditation, its roots in the Christian tradition, and its power to compel us beyond our place of prayer to compassionate action in the world. Includes a meditation time together. WHEN: Wednesday, COST: $20.00
October 16, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
MEDITATION DURING ADVENT Advent is a time of waiting. We wait for the celebration of Christmas, the feast of the incarnation of God in Jesus. We wait for that time when God will be all in all. And in between, we contemplate the mystery of the Divine here and now, God present in all that is, sustaining all in life and love, manifesting in all, in us. Wisdom Ways offers two contemplative experiences to enliven our waiting.
TUESDAY NOONDAY MEDITATION During Advent, noonday meditation will be offered in addition to the regular Tuesday evening meditation. The weekly session will include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. Tuesdays, December 3 to December 17, 12:00 noon to 12:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free. WHEN:
MORNING MEDITATION RETREAT This Advent morning retreat provides a more extended and focused time to deepen our existing practice of meditation. Our morning in silence will include a pattern of sitting and walking meditations, mindful movements, and chanting. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $20.00
December 7, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Facilitators for Christian meditation programs: Spiritual director Susan Oeffling, CSJ has master’s degrees in theology and counseling and spiritual direction training from the Center for Spiritual Guidance. Deborah Chernick studies the history of Christian contemplative prayer and serves on the board of the Trust for the Meditation Process. Both have practiced meditation for many years.

LECTIO DIVINA: MORNINGS OF REFLECTION DURING ADVENT
WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR
Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a “long, loving look at Scripture” says spiritual director Teresa Blythe. “It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God.” This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts for Advent, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your prayer life. For our Advent prayer, we will use excerpts from the Gospel of Thomas, made up of 114 sayings of Jesus. Facilitator: Pat Jones is a spiritual director, Psychologist Emeritus, and former Benedictine. GROUP SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE DURING ADVENT
Introductory Workshop Spiritual memoir is the practice of listening deeply to our life experiences through the creation of artful, true stories. We come more alive when we accept how our experiences have formed us and when we form something of what we’ve experienced. By writing memories with intention, we can find holiness in the details, patterns that unify our sense of self, and deep personal healing. By crafting our stories to engage the inner life of readers, we can participate in transforming our world. Join Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew for an introduction to the art and spiritual practice of writing memoir. What is memoir, and how is it different from autobiography? What makes memoir spiritual? How can the practice of writing memoir, whether for an audience or no audience, support spiritual growth? We will start with the basics, using writing exercises, readings from master writers, and conversation. We will also discuss how to sustain the practice with writing partners or small groups in hopes of launching ongoing support for new writers. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $45.00
September 28, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
Group spiritual direction is a process in which people gather on a regular basis to assist one another in an ongoing awareness of Sacred Mystery in all of life. Participants seek support of their responsiveness to the Holy and agree to support others in their responsiveness as well. In this season of transition in both culture and church we will focus on the significance of home and hospitality in times of darkness and light! Facilitator: Read more about Mary Kaye Medinger on page 7. Tuesdays, November 26, December 3, 10, 17, 10:00 to 11:30 COST: $100.00 for four sessions, limited to 4 participants WHEN:

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES
Monthly Writing Sessions: Second Fridays
Monthly drop-in sessions focus on different aspects of writing spiritual memoir: themes that commonly arise, craft techniques, challenges and joys of the writing process, and practices for opening our work to the spirit’s movement. Sessions include writing exercises, examples from leading and emerging writers, lecture, and small group conversation. To support individual writers and writing groups in the ever-deepening practice of writing spiritual memoir, time is included for participant questions.
September: Making Connections
Just as contrasts in flavor make an exciting dish, great writing often emerges when we bring together disparate subjects. We’ll experiment with this, conjoining memories from different eras of our lives and making leaps between objects and ideas, belief and doubt, narration and reflection. Making connections across difference on the page can strengthen our capacity to do the same in our lives.
November: Embodying Holiness
Our bodies are trustworthy sources of memory and wisdom. Together we’ll write from our bodies, about our bodies, to our bodies, and with our bodies as a practice of welcoming the Spirit. We’ll also delve into sensory description as a literary technique that invites the reader deep into our experiences.
December: Becoming the Stranger
We use the metaphor of a journey to describe the soul’s path because the risks, challenges, and surprises of spiritual growth are so similar to travel. We’ll write memories of leaving home, visiting new landscapes, and becoming the stranger. We’ll also explore how and why writing becomes a spiritual journey. Facilitator: Writing instructor and spiritual director Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew is the author of Writing the Sacred Journey: The Art and Practice of Spiritual Memoir; Living Revision: Opening the Writer’s Art; and many other books, essays, and short memoirs. Her work explores the intersections between spiritual growth and the creative process. More at elizabethjarrettandrew.com
October: Writing as Contemplation In the city fields Contemplating cherry trees... Strangers are like friends Contemplation, as the Buddhist priest and poet Issa illustrates, is a field of intimacy, and writing is one entrance. Guest writer Kyoko Katayama will share observations about writing as a mindfulness practice and lead us in writing exercises that encourage deep listening, responsive creating, and open-hearted becoming.
Fridays, September 13, October 11, November 8, December 13, 1:30 to 3:30 pm COST: $100.00 for the series; $30.00 per session WHEN:
Introductory workshop is not a prerequisite for the monthly writing sessions.
Guest writer in October: Kyoko Katayama’s poems have appeared in Asian American Renaissance Journal and Intersecting Circles: The Voices of Hapa Women in Poetry and Prose, and an excerpt of her memoir-in-progress was published in Where the Tree Falls, the Forest Rises: Stories of Death and Renewal. She is a psychotherapist in St. Paul and a senior member at Common Ground Meditation Center.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES WRITER’S CIRCLE: TENDING WRITER AND WRITING The most significant creation born of writing is the person the writer becomes for having written. With intention, a community can tend both the literary creation and what’s coming alive inside the creators. In this facilitated small group modeled after spiritual direction groups and Quaker clearness committees, the circle will magnify our listening and hold us accountable to the creative source. Unlike traditional writing groups which focus exclusively on the text, we will attend the aliveness moving within both writer and text. We create our best work when our inner transformation receives the support of others.
a series of small-group conversations, connecting around shared genres, levels of experience, interests, and location. We’ll end with social time so participants can exchange contact information and formalize plans. You’re invited to bring a short (200 words or less) sample to share by way of introducing your writing, but this is not required. Facilitators: Read more about Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew on page 20. Lisa Marie Brimmer is co-editor of the anthology Queer Voices: Poetry, Prose, and Pride whose work has appeared in many publications. As an interdisciplinary cultural worker their work engages with environment, kinship, and culture while plotting intersectional black (/indigenous) queer liberation.
The Writer’s Circle is for those who write regularly, are committed to their projects, and are ready to share their work with others. Because of the group’s small size, facilitator Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew will select participants based on individual readiness and the overall makeup of the group. Please submit a letter of application describing your writing experience, your current project, any experience you’ve had giving and receiving feedback on creative work and/or participating in group contemplative discernment, and why you’re interested in this group to info@wisdomwayscenter.org by September 5. Include a one-page sample of your writing.
Michael Kiesow Moore’s work has appeared in several journals and books as well as his poetry collections What to Pray For and The Song Castle. Founder of the Birchbark Books Reading Series and the Loft Peace and Social Justice Writers Group, he teaches writing and mindfulness.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF: A JEWISH PAPERCUT ARTIST In my work, I interpret contemporary experience and political events through papercuts that are rigorous, beautiful, and thought-provoking. This is a new direction for Jewish papercuts, which traditionally served primarily to embellish holiday and life cycle events. My papercuts often spring forth from texts and include text in them, and with them I seek to question and reinforce meanings, to comfort and to challenge the viewer, and to evoke a desire to look, think, and discover. In papercutting, everything you see is defined by the absence around it, something that is true, but often unacknowledged, in our own lived experience. O ANTIPHONS: ADVENT NAMES OF GOD Paintings by Ansgar Holmberg, CSJ Seven short verses are sung before the Magnificat during the Evening Prayer of the Church on the seven days before the vigil of Christmas. Each begins with the exclamation “O”. Each ends with a plea for the Messiah to come. These O Antiphons, as they are known, were composed in the seventh or eighth century when monks put together texts from the Old Testament that looked forward to the coming of our salvation. They form a rich mosaic of scriptural images, and became very popular in the Middle Ages. Holmberg’s images invite a transformation from the traditional O Antiphons into the context of evolutionary cosmology. Poetry by Joan Mitchell, CSJ complements these images celebrating the incarnation of God as one of us in Jesus. Artist: Ansgar Holmberg, CSJ studied with renowned liturgical artist Ade Bethune. Holmberg’s color-saturated works are more reminiscent of folk art than conventional religious images. Her art arises from her own spiritual journey and life changes. Her interpretations of themes are not fixed in the manner of icons, but ever changing through time. WHEN:
