ILLUMINE A Ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet 1890 Randolph Avenue St. Paul, MN 55105 www.wisdomwayscenter.org

WELCOME

ILLUMINE

Walking the woods, sunlight beaming through the thick forest canopy illumines a spider web laced between ferns…and we pause at the beauty of creation. To illumine is to reveal what is already there: layers of relationship and intricacy that we may have passed by. Our fall theme, Illumine, is an invitation to pause and consider what is glimmering in the crevices all around and within us. Hildegard of Bingen’s sense of God as “the living light and the obscured illumination” conveys this mystery. The light cast at dawn and dusk reveals contours, textures and colors that the full light of day overpowers. Illumined by something as small as a candle, space, experience and even perspective can be transformed.

OUR MISSION

We’ll hear women theologians from around the world call us to see how the body of Christ is more dynamic and integral when experiences and contexts are vast and imaginative. Artists, writers, and sociologists will expand our lens, broaden our engagements in the world, and illumine delicate threads of connection that hold us in communion with all life. As we go forth, may Jesus’ words “Be not afraid” surround us. Illumined, may we accompany one another in the challenges and hopes of all creation. Rev. Barbara Lund, Director

EXPERIENCING HILDEGARD OF BINGEN Multipart Series through April 2017

Come delve into the life and creativity of Hildegard of Bingen, a twelfth-century Rhineland mystic, writer, healer, leader, playwright, composer, and preacher. In 2012, 833 years after her death, she was declared a saint of the universal church and one of only four women among 35 persons officially recognized in Catholicism as a “Doctor of the Church.” In addition to a thorough examination of her life and visions, this interdisciplinary series will explore a Jungian perspective on her visions and key theological topics found in her writings, such as the dark side of God, the divine feminine, mother church, and her concept of the green life-force, viriditas. Compare mandalas in her visions and those found in Jung’s Red Book and probe Celtic influences on her spirituality. We’ll wrap up in April 2017 with a retreat and reflections on the contemporary implications of Hildegard’s life and thought led by Avis Clendenen, author of Experiencing Hildegard: Jungian Perspectives. Presenters: Mary Kaye Medinger is a lifelong educator with a particular interest in women’s history and spirituality. A writer, editor and retreat leader, she holds degrees in history, education and pastoral studies as well as certificates in holistic health studies, spiritual direction and The Sacred Art of Living and Dying. A consociate of the Sisters of St. Joseph, she has spent 37 years in various ministerial positions in parish, diocesan and ecumenical settings. Hildegard is one of her mentors! Ed Sellner is professor emeritus in theology, St. Catherine University, where he has taught undergraduate and graduate courses for the past 35 years and administered pastoral ministry, spiritual direction, and master’s degree programs. Ed has studied at the Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, and is the author of 12 books

PRAIRIE AND POETRY To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee,— One clover, and a bee, And revery.

THE WAY OF OUR PEOPLE: CONVERSATION WITH D. RICHARD WRIGHT, OJIBWE ELDER

The revery alone will do

Co-hosted by Gichitwaa Kateri Parish, Native American Awareness Working Group of the CSJ Justice Commission, and Wisdom Ways

If bees are few. Perched between prairie and woodlands, between urban and rural, our Minnesota landscape is unique; it is the subject of nostalgia for things lost and a contested ground for a sustainable future. To deeply understand our Midwestern place takes both bees and reverie, in Emily Dickinson’s words—both scientist and poet. Experience a one-day seminar on the prairie that attempts to reveal the richness of our landscape through careful scientific observation and thoughtful reflection guided by literature. Enjoy a day of wondering and wandering through the wild restored prairie at Belwin Conservancy in Afton, MN. Facilitators: Cecilia Konchar Farr is Chair of English, Carondelet Scholar, and Professor of English and Women’s Studies in the Women’s College at St. Kate’s. Her research interests all circle around novels—their history, their (women) readers, and their social, educational, aesthetic, and political work. In short, professionally and personally, she likes big books. Jill Welter is an ecosystem scientist and Associate Professor at St. Kate’s with expertise in the ecology of streams. She maintains an active research program and engages undergraduate students in her research, which focuses on understanding how environmental change, including climate warming and eutrophication, influences species interactions and nutrient cycling in stream ecosystems. Jill has a strong interest in the intersection between art and science. Saturday, September 24. Meet at Carondelet Center at 8:45 am for 9:00 am departure and return at 4:00 pm. COST: $75.00, includes lunch and transportation. Event is limited to 25 participants. WHEN:

Join an evening of conversation with author Donald Richard Wright, who observed and studied the ancient ceremonies of the Aboriginal Ojibwe in Little Black River Reserve, Ontario, Canada. Its ceremony maker was a 94-year-old Ojibwe-Cree who lived in the mountains near Edmonton. Wright wanted to experience and research the ceremonies in order to understand “the fundamental cultural strengths of the Indian who became copious drinkers of alcohol,” he says. “As an aspirant to the Archdiocese of St. Paul, Minneapolis Deaconate Program, if I was to counsel the drinker, then my ministry became to know a little about these beliefs.” Wright too struggled with alcohol. “After several years, God showed me salvation…and one day in a bar, I told myself I had had enough. Alcohol addiction became my strength, and, rather than succumb to its negative connotations, I studied chemical dependency and became licensed in the field. To become sober, I sat and listened to those thousands of Indian people talk…Here was despair, shame, remorse, deep emotions around living a hurting life. Yet they were proud and, I sensed, afraid to be awarded for whatever sobriety they would achieve. I think they were so used to having what little they had be taken from them. This was a result of the colonization and oppression of a once very astute, proud people of aboriginal nations across North America. “In seminary, I learned God wanted us to live a certain way. In the Indian culture, Creator wants us to live a certain way. Therefore, the book, The Way of Our People.” Presenter: Donald Richard Wright is an Elder of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe. He has been an alcohol and drug counselor for over 18 years, working with inner city Indian youth in Minneapolis. DREAMS: ILLUMINATIONS OF OUR DEEPEST EMERGING SELF

We are part of the 13.8 billion year cosmic story—a mosaic of brilliant fragments. Every night, we are given dreams that serve our own health and wholeness. Illuminations, as it were, into our deepest emerging Self. Jung writes, “The dream is the small hidden door in the deepest and most intimate sanctum of the soul, which opens to that primeval cosmic night.” Our inclination is to want to know the dream’s meaning often by looking outside of our self for understanding. And yet, as Jeremy Taylor teaches us, “Only you the dreamer can say with any certainty what meanings your dreams may hold.” The intention of this retreat is to support the dreamer’s capacity for entering into a deeper relationship with the images, colors, sounds and stories given to us in our dreams. The interplay of poetry, symbols, focusing, and touch drawing will help us enter this relationship. Please bring one or two written dreams to explore. All sharing of dreams and insights will be optional. Facilitators: Carol Burling has been a lifelong learner and teacher in the area of human development, focusing on spiritual development, shame, loss and grief, and resiliency. She works in Minneapolis as a spiritual director and as a program manager for Pathways Health Crisis Resource Center. Weaver, stained glass artist and spiritual director Dennis Galvin, FSC, incorporates dream work (certified through the Haden institute) and sand/symbol work in retreats and continuing adult formation for the Midwest Province of Christian Brothers. Friday, November 18 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm and Saturday, November 19 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm COST: $140.00, includes meals and supplies. WHEN:

HEDGEROW INITIATIVE

The Hedgerow Initiative offers sustained, systematic programming in feminist theological education, spiritual integration, and leadership for a just and holy world. In a particular way, the Initiative highlights the scholarship of women who since the 1950s have worked to reclaim women’s presence and significance in scripture, church, history, theology and culture. The Initiative takes its name from the hedgerow schools in Ireland that kept alive the language, faith, culture and community of the people during the time of the British penal codes. A hedgerow is a biosphere and a haven.

THE STRENGTH OF HER WITNESS: JESUS CHRIST IN THE GLOBAL VOICES OF WOMEN For over a half century the worldwide women’s movement has led women into theological study, including the field of Christology that seeks to understand who Jesus Christ is. In The Strength of Her Witness, editor Elizabeth Johnson collects the transforming insights of 25 women theologians from six continents. The Fall Hedgerow Seminar will launch the book and Wisdom Ways Center for Spirituality Fall Soul Conference will bring several of the women theologians to speak in person, including Elizabeth Johnson.

Women identify with Jesus in fresh and diverse ways—as friend, birthing woman, breast feeding woman, insignificant one, suffering woman, Christa, surrogate, abandoned, forgotten, enslaved, subject to empire. Their witness demonstrates the full humanity of women and the robust faith women live despite sexist, racist, elitist, colonial mindsets. Join in exploring and transforming the Christian doctrine too often used to oppress women. SESSION TOPICS INCLUDE: Resilient Faith Born of Women’s Experience Samaritan Woman, Elizabeth Johnson (USA) The Easter Experience: Mary Magdalene Sandra Schneiders (USA), Teresa Okure (Nigeria) Women and Christ: Toward Inclusive Christologies Joy Ann McDougall (USA), Ellen Leonard, (Canada), Kelly Brown Douglas (USA), Carter Heyward (USA), Francine Cardman (USA)

Women’s resilient faith sustains and enlivens the Christian community. It’s time to hear what women have to say and teach. It’s time for a renewed Body of Christ to burst forth with full, diverse, inclusive transforming potential in our world. Two gospel witnesses help name the book. The strength of her witness leads the Samaritan woman’s whole village to meet and believe in Jesus (John 4). The strength of her witness leads Mary Magdalene to linger at Jesus’ grave and become the first to proclaim his resurrection, the apostle to the apostles (John 20). A multi-cultural, inclusive Christology evolves in the witness of the 25 women theologians in this book.

THE EMERGENCE OF ISLAMOPHOBIA AND WHITE ALLIES Waves of Islamophobia roiling the United States and Europe are unleashing fear and hate in our world. Cruel and inaccurate stereotypes are increasing while tolerance and civil liberties are threatened. As well, a new racial formation around “Islam” and the “West” seems to be emerging. Whereas in the past the notion of a Muslim Other informed a notion of a Western self among elites, today the fear of Muslims is deeply penetrating popular identity and giving rise to a fascist-like movement that threatens to tip us into a deep dive of racism that will be hard to overcome. White allies are critical to speaking up and intervening to stop the new racial formation from its horrific objectives. Come be part of two sessions that will analyze this movement and how it is transforming political and national identities—and invite you to play a role in preventing others from being pulled into this frightening new racial formation. Presenter: A member of the Macalester College sociology department, Khaldoun Samman teaches a wide variety of courses, including “Islam and the West, The Politics of Fear, Secularism and Its Discontents”. A peaceful world will only be when we can see beyond the boundaries of “us” and “them” and “me and you” to one self, and to that self be true. Who here would cut their own arm? Or starve their own child? Or let any part of themselves be harmed or defiled? We may still have a little while to fly our flags on this garden isle as it pirouettes through the Milky Way. But maybe not, who can say? * K IRTANA

MARKING THE DAYS: CREATING OUR WAY THROUGH LIFE’S CHANGES How do we as human beings cherish, and at the same time let go, when lifechanging events turn us in new directions? Whether it’s a change in home, work or relationship; the arrival or loss of a loved one; the onset of an illness; or the beginning of a new vocation–we often honor the turning points in our lives

During this highly politicized election year when exclusionary rhetoric often shuts down genuine conversation and cynicism too often passes for wisdom, come explore what is meant by “the ethic of inclusion.” What ethical principles drive our thoughts and interactions on current issues? Ethics comes in more than one stripe. Ken Wilber’s integral paradigm and principles from the Arbinger Institute’s Anatomy of Peace will help illuminate the subtle ways we all get trapped in boxes of our own making that undermine our best intentions to actually be inclusive. Come reflect on a major change in your life in a three-part series using guided writing, guided calendar making, and guided book making. No experience necessary. Supplies and tools provided. Bring a chosen life event, a list of related dates and a willingness to let your own creativity lead you in cherishing, remembering and letting go. You’ll reflect in your own words on your turning point, create a prim stav (a centuries-old calendar system for marking significant days), and make a small hand-sized book to hold both the calendar and your event-inspired writing. The class can be used to reflect on life changes we have chosen as well as those that come to us unbidden. Facilitators: Karen Hering first created a personal prim stav to mark the significant days in a recent cancer diagnosis and treatment. Author of Writing to Wake the Soul: Opening the Sacred Conversation Within, and consulting literary minister at Unity Church-Unitarian in St. Paul, she engages writing as a spiritual practice and a tool for healing and social action, offering retreats and workshops near and far in congregations, retreat centers, and conferences. Her last limited-edition fine press book, Echoes, included a Norwegian Prim Stav as the cover image. She teaches at Minnesota Center for Book Arts, The Loft Literary Center, and is an Adjunct Instructor at Hamline University. Georgia was awarded a Jerome Book Arts Fellowship in 2014. THE GRACE IN AGING FOR MEN

CENTERING PRAYER CIRCLE

There is tremendous need and capacity for men to enter into their aging with deliberation and even grace, especially after having been grounded in spiritual awareness and practice. This fall series will explore men’s time of life related to aging guided by Kathleen Dowling Singh’s powerful guidebook, The Grace in Aging. The book’s subtitle encourages readers to “Awaken as you grow older”, which also offers a template for our six-part book study and men’s group. What are the special conditions supporting transformation in the process of aging? Singh uses a variety of wisdom teachings with practice to delve deeper into the dynamics of aging. Liberation from confining habits, mindsets and beliefs are explored with accompanying ways to move more fully into acceptance and awakening. Our gatherings will combine sharing from the book, personal and group reflection, and practical ways in which aging men can find support towards intentional aging.

To foster community among participants, the Wisdom Ways Men’s Spirituality Series holds a monthly contemplative prayer circle. Each meeting begins with 20 minutes of contemplative prayer practice using the method of Centering Prayer. Opportunity for group sharing is included, as well as occasional video teachings by Centering Prayer teacher and Trappist monk Thomas Keating. This ancient practice of Christian meditation is related to the classic tradition of contemplation and is easily accessible. Facilitators: Louie Doering, a group leader for Centering Prayer groups at St. Stanislaus Parish in St. Paul, and Terry Shaughnessy, Wisdom Ways Men’s Spirituality Coordinator. COLORING YOUR MEDITATIONS REIMAGINE

COLORING YOUR MEDITATIONS ON THE SPIRITUAL PATH * A note from Brother Mickey McGrath It should come as no surprise that I loved to color when I was a kid. To paraphrase St. Paul: “I used to think like a child, and act like a child, and color like a child, but now I am a man — and guess what? I still love to color like a child!” As you have probably noticed by now, coloring has become quite the rage, with a plethora of books to satisfy your creative and therapeutic inclinations. But to me coloring is a sacred activity or meditation. Any creative endeavors that we pursue calm us down and bring us inner peace. Which is exactly where we find God: waiting patiently for us in the depths of color and shape, symbol and mystery. The following pages offer images for you to color and illumine your spirit:

Joachim and Anna

Jesus has a sleepover with his grandparents! Color this when you need the love and guidance from the wisdom figures in your family.

St. Martha and the Dragon

Express yourself—your self-confidence and empowerment. Start your coloring time with a prayer and offer it to God as gift. Light a candle. I recommend at least 15 minutes, but take more if you can. If something is weighing on your mind, don’t dwell on it. Just think about the colors. If you customarily keep a journal, think of this time as journaling, especially if you don’t feel like writing. Express yourself, don’t censor yourself! No one ever has to see your pages if you don’t care to share them, so use any colors you want, wherever you want. Or, get a group of friends together and color them together, with or without wine and music. Maybe you will even want to give your colored pages to someone in need of your loving attention. Whatever you choose to color, just let your prayer be one of thanks: for color, and story and the creative Spirit that draws us closer to God. These pictures are from DRAWING CLOSE TO GOD, my coloring book published by World Library Publications and available at www.bromickeymcgrath.com. A great gift idea!

The morning will provide an introduction to meditation according to the teaching of John Main, OSB and a retreat experience of sitting and walking meditation, mindful movements, and chanting. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $20.00

MEDITATION DURING ADVENT

MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer in which we move beyond words, thoughts, and images. We open ourselves to God’s mysterious and silent presence within us and it becomes more and more the reality of our lives. From this place of prayer we engage in our work in the world. This fall, Wisdom Ways invites you to experience Christian contemplative prayer.

TUESDAY EVENING MEDITATION During these times of prayer, we will sit in silent meditation with others. Meditating together is a way of deepening and supporting our personal practice. The weekly sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. Following meditation, there will an optional short introduction to Christian Meditation for those new to this form of prayer. Come as often as you are able.

Advent is a time of waiting. We wait for the celebration of Christmas, the feast of the incarnation of God in Jesus. We wait for that time when God will be all in all. And in between, we contemplate the mystery of the Divine here and now, God present in all that is, sustaining all in life and love, manifesting in all, in us. Wisdom Ways offers two contemplative experiences to enliven our waiting.

TUESDAY NOONDAY MEDITATION During Advent, noonday meditation will be offered in addition to the regular Tuesday evening meditation. The weekly meditation session will include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. Tuesdays, November 29 - December 20, 12:00 noon to 12:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free. WHEN:

This residential retreat in the Christian contemplative tradition is intended for those who wish to awaken more fully to the Divine presence. The days, which will be spent in silence, will be highly structured, with a pattern of 25-minute sitting meditations, teachings, and other contemplative practices. Because of the intensity of this retreat experience, it is expected that participants have learned about meditation, practice it regularly, are comfortable with silence, and stay overnight on site. LECTIO DIVINA: MORNINGS OF REFLECTION DURING ADVENT Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a “long, loving look at Scripture” says spiritual director Teresa Blythe. “It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God.” This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts for Advent, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your prayer life. Facilitator: Pat Jones is a spiritual director, Psychologist Emeritus, and former Benedictine. Mondays, November 28, December 5, 12, and 19, 10:00 to 11:00 am COST: Free. RSVP to 651-696-2788 or info@wisdomwayscenter.org WHEN:

All programs are held at Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. Paul, unless otherwise noted.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR

September 9: Journeys

Introductory Workshop

Writing brings us the best surprises when we don’t take ourselves too seriously! We’ll use whimsical entries into memory, learning how to shake off the inner critic and welcome the unexpected and ever-creating spirit.

Spiritual memoir is the practice of listening deeply to our life experiences through the creation of artful, true stories. We come more alive when we accept how our experiences have formed us and when we form something of what we’ve experienced. By writing memories with intention, we can find holiness in the details, patterns that unify our sense of self, and deep personal healing. By crafting our stories to engage the inner life of readers, we can participate in transforming our world. Join Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew for an introduction to the art and spiritual practice of writing memoir. What is memoir, and how is it different from autobiography? What makes memoir spiritual? How can the practice of writing memoir, whether for an audience or no audience, support spiritual growth? We will start with the basics, using writing exercises, readings from master writers, and conversation. We will also discuss how to sustain the practice with writing partners or small groups in hopes of launching ongoing support for new writers. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $40.00

October 8, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Monthly writing sessions: Second Fridays Monthly drop-in sessions led by Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew focus on different aspects of writing spiritual memoir: themes that commonly arise, craft techniques, challenges and joys of the writing process, and practices for opening our work to the spirit’s movement. Sessions include writing exercises, examples from leading and emerging writers, lecture, and small group conversation. To support individual writers and writing groups in the ever-deepening practice of writing spiritual memoir, time is included for participant questions.

It’s no coincidence that we describe the soul’s path as a journey. The physical journeys we’ve taken (whether they’re dog-walks, cross-country trips, or overseas pilgrimages) have much to teach us about the soul’s journey—and effective writing.

October 14: Holy Play

November 11: Place

What’s your spiritual geography? By writing memories of place—the landscapes of childhood and adulthood, with their unique imprint—we’ll uncover the sacred gifts and challenges of location. We’ll also explore the role of settings in our stories.

December 9: Symbols and Metaphors

In this season of encroaching darkness, we’ll search for the images that act as guiding lights within our stories, transcending the ordinary and bringing us hope. Our memories are rich with symbolism; writing memories can ignite the symbols, for ourselves and our readers. Facilitator: Writing instructor and spiritual director Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew is the author of Writing the Sacred Journey: The Art and Practice of Spiritual Memoir; the forthcoming Living Revision: Opening the Writer’s Art; and many other books, essays, and short memoirs. Her work explores the intersections between spiritual growth and the creative process. More at www.elizabethjarrettandrew.com. Fridays, September 9, October 14, November 11, December 9, 1:30 to 3:30 pm COST: $100.00 for the series; $30.00 per session WHEN:

Introductory workshop is not a prerequisite for the monthly writing sessions.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICES

When we write together and share our words with others, we move our creative work out of solitude into community and foster an ongoing, lively writing practice. For those wanting to sustain this practice throughout the month, Wisdom Ways now offers Seed Writing Sessions.

SPIRITUAL MEMOIR “SEED WRITING” SESSIONS

WALKING IN HARMONY: A LABYRINTH JOURNEY

Third Fridays

Second Fridays, September-December

Develop your writing as a spiritual practice with these dropin sessions. We will write spiritual memoir “seeds” from prompts based on a monthly theme, which participants can then develop if they choose. There will be opportunities to share (but not critique) our work, bringing our creations to life beyond the page. Together we’ll participate in generative silence and celebrate the sacred nature of our life stories.

In the midst of daily challenges and conflicts within our greater communities, cultivating a spirit of harmony and peace is a gift for yourself and the world.

September: Journeys with Vanessa Ramos October: Holy Play with Liz Olds November: Place with Vanessa Ramos December: Symbols and Metaphors with Liz Olds

After a brief opening reflection, you are welcome to walk as often as you wish. There will be space for writing and artistic play as well as time for quiet prayer and meditation.

Facilitators: Liz Olds was raised in Virginia and has traveled the country in a search for her right path both spiritual and physical. Now living in Minneapolis, she writes her way through joys and challenges, developing her relationship with God, friends, and two cats. Born in Texas and raised in Minnesota, Vanessa Ramos is an artist dedicated to inspiring and empowering others to explore, create, and share their stories. EVOLVING INTO THE FULLNESS OF LOVE: MEDITATIONS ON BODY AND EARTH

The Life of Stars

volution is the movement toward more being E and consciousness; that is, greater awareness of the whole and deeper connection to the whole * ILIA DELIO

Our generation is experiencing the fastest rate of change in human history. The chaos and uncertainty of our times tests our hearts and our faith. Our souls are thirsty for a sustaining connection to love’s current. We need to know in our bones our part in the whole.

The Autumnal Equinox reminds us that we are spinning around the sun. This scientific fact was once heretical, and in many ways our theology has still not caught up with this understanding of the cosmos. We will honor the sun and stars for their roles in the cycle of life on earth and in the universe. Breath, walking meditation, guided imagery, and group sharing will nourish the heart’s connection to the deep time of stars.

The Life of the Planet Let’s make the journey of the universe even more tangible by noticing it beneath our feet. Minnesota’s rich soil, bodies of water, and rock formations contain stories of tropical heat, volcanoes, and glaciers. Touching and meditating on the soil, water, and rocks around us will reveal this natural history. Gentle moving meditations will help us attune to the movement of ice and tectonic plates, and discover the deeper patterns that created our world. By experiencing these elements and their story we can connect to the deep time of the earth and the underlying organizing principle of love.

Life in Evolution

Reflections on the evolution of stars, the earth, and life on earth will serve as doorways to connecting with the love energy that marks the history of the universe. Through meditations that engage all of our senses, we will listen deeply to scientific information about the cosmos, Minnesota’s natural history, and the brain. Together we will explore practices for daily life that nurture a sense of deep connection to the whole of life: basking in a sunbeam, holding a rock, joining a circle, and many more.

What is humanity’s place in the journey of the universe? We will take an experiential and meditative journey through the mind of single cell organisms and the billions of years of evolution to the human brain. Scientists can map the specific nerves through which we humans perceive our connection to the whole. Teilhard de Chardin called this consciousness “evolution looking at itself and reflecting upon itself.” We will draw on meditation, meditative movements, ritual dance, and singing because they release the hormones that nourish our sense of connection to the whole of life.

The very process of becoming conscious of our part of the whole is in fact part of the bigger cosmic evolution. Through meditations infused with movement and music we will strengthen our ability to participate fully in the evolution of consciousness towards the fullness of love.

Artist-healer Emily Jarrett Hughes helps people live vital, meaningful lives through group classes and individual sessions based in the creative and meditative movement practices of qigong and dance. SPIRITUAL PRACTICES PRAYING THE ADVENT NAMES OF GOD

Join artist Ansgar Holmberg and prayer poet Joan Mitchell to reflect and meditate on the Advent names of God. A blend of words and images will invite us to transform the traditional O Antiphons from the Advent Liturgy of the Hours into the context of evolutionary cosmology, opening new space for us to anticipate Jesus’ birth in our busy lives and our planet in peril. The practice of praising God throughout the day reaches back to Israel’s temple with dawn and dusk the most important times for prayer. Vespers, the evening prayer, concludes with the Magnificat, the prayer Mary proclaims after she says yes to becoming the Mother of God. Each dusk from December 17 to 23, an O Antiphon precedes the Magnificat, drawing on the scriptures of Israel to invite the long promised and awaited Messiah to come. Use what we pray together to shape your own or your family’s meditations, as we celebrate the incarnation of God as one of us in Jesus. Learn more about the O Antiphons and Ansgar Holmberg’s drawings on pages 23. Presenters: Ansgar Holmberg is an artist and a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province. Joan Mitchell, CSJ, PhD, is publisher and coeditor of Good Ground Press and author of Beyond Fear and Silence: A Feminist Reading of Mark and Mark’s Gospel: The Whole Story. WINTER SOLSTICE: HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS “Hope” is the thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings the tune without the words And never stops - at all These lines by Emily Dickenson inspire us as winter settles in. Come illumine the darkness by lighting candles, singing songs, celebrating, mourning, embracing. Deep in the dark and cold, we’ll wander inward, find a spark, and kindle hope for the season. Musician: Sara Thomsen is a weaver of song and community singing. At concerts, conferences, classrooms, workshops, retreats, jails, places of prayer, and lines of protest, to be with Sara is to want to sing. She is founder and artistic director of the Echoes of Peace Choir, a community choir in Duluth, Minnesota, and a staunch supporter of struggles for human dignity and ecological sustainability. “ WHEN HOME WON’T LET YOU STAY” This poignant photography exhibition provides a new perspective on the often-hidden lives and compelling experiences of refugees in our communities. Contemporary color portraits are accompanied by first-person stories highlighting the resiliency and challenges of refugees who call Minnesota home. “I’m drawn to stories that provide a window into the state of contemporary society,” says documentary photographer James A. Bowey. With the number of globally displaced people expected to continue to rise in response to ongoing conflicts, poverty, and climate change, this exhibition is a welcome contribution to discussions about our duty to refugees, our American roots, and our national identity.

Artist: Documentary photographer James A. Bowey, who explores issues of human rights and social connection, has covered a wide range of global and national stories from the war in Bosnia to Hurricane Katrina. His work has been featured by The New York Times, Time magazine, the Associated Press, and numerous exhibitions. While teaching at Winona State University from 2008 to 2015, he won the national WOW award for innovation in higher education. FALL 2016

O ANTIPHONS: ADVENT NAMES OF GOD Seven short verses are sung before the Magnificat during the Evening Prayer of the Church on the seven days before the vigil of Christmas. Each begins with the exclamation “O”. Each ends with a plea for the Messiah to come. These O Antiphons, as they are known, were composed in the seventh or eighth century when monks put together texts from the Old Testament which looked forward to the coming of our salvation. They form a rich mosaic of scriptural images, and became very popular in the Middle Ages. Artist: Ansgar Holmberg, CSJ, studied with renowned liturgical artist Ade Bethune. Holmberg’s color-saturated works are more reminiscent of folk art than conventional religious images. Her art arises from her own spiritual journey and life changes. Her interpretations of themes are not fixed in the manner of icons, but ever changing through time. EXHIBIT: December 5 to 31 ARTIST PROGRAM: Tuesdays,

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION Spiritual Direction is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with the divine. In spiritual direction, space is created for one to learn and grow in their spirituality. The person seeking direction shares stories of his or her encounters of the divine, or how he or she is experiencing spiritual issues. Spiritual direction nurtures a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human. It is not counseling, psychotherapy or financial planning. If you seek spiritual direction, the following CSJ Spiritual Directors are available to support you on your journey.
