FALL 2020 VIRTUAL PROGRAMS

WELCOME

HOPE

The theme for Fall programming at Wisdom Ways is HOPE. Immersed in unexpected, unsettling transition, our need to claim and hold hope near beckons with a new and profound prominence. This season will be dedicated to cultivating our hope during a momentous evolutionary shift. What does hope bring to us in these moments of loss and opportunity, unraveling and unveiling, and changing ways of being and doing? Together we will explore the map that hope provides: a guide to the intersections between what is and what we long for. Hope is the steadfast witness to what is possible in the direst of situations. It is the glimmer gently urging us to open our heart a little more, to lean a little further into the discomfort that change demands, to expand our perspective in a new direction, and to stay focused on what needs our attention. At a time when so much is broken open and the truth of injustice lies bare, we look to hope for the promise of rebirth. For deeper ways to see and listen. For an authentic tending to ourselves and to one another in order to bring about true healing and transformation. Hope is the catalyst for our rising and, after everything, hope is a thing that will not stop.

OUR MISSION

Here on the pulse of this new day You may have the grace to look up and out And into your sister’s eyes, and into Your brother’s face, your country And say simply Very simply With hope Good morning.

Maya Angelou (from “On the Pulse of Morning”)

Given the ongoing uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to steward the safety of our community, all Fall Wisdom Ways programs will take place virtually. In this new sphere of learning, you’ll discover creative ways to explore, reimagine, and embody the hope that is readily available to each of us; engage in hopeful conversations with community; and hold hearts and spirits open to the hope present in Divine Mystery. HEDGEROW INITIATIVE

The Hedgerow Initiative offers sustained, systematic programming in feminist theological education, spiritual integration, and leadership for a just and holy world. In a particular way, the Initiative highlights the scholarship of women who since the 1950s have worked to reclaim women’s presence and significance in scripture, church, history, theology and culture. The Initiative takes its name from the hedgerow schools in Ireland that kept alive the language, faith, culture and community of the people during the time of the British penal codes. A hedgerow is a biosphere and a haven.

CREATION AND THE CROSS: LIVING IN THE MYSTERY OF G*D

Our virtual class will include pre-recorded lecture, small- and large-group discussion, access to a private course webpage, and a live Zoom conversation with Professor Johnson on November 9.

In this online course, theologian Elizabeth Johnson rethinks and reimagines the mystery of God in our unfinished world and fraught times. Her book Creation and the Cross engages us seekers in critical and creative dialogue with Anselm’s feudal metaphor that makes Jesus’ death necessary to restore his Father’s honor. No metaphor is adequate to express the mystery of God. In our culture today, satisfaction theory turns God into an abusive father and makes Jesus a victim.

Sessions include: • Wrestling with Anselm • The Creating God Who Saves • God of All Flesh: Deep Incarnation • All Creation Groaning • Conversion of Heart and Mind: Us

Instead, Johnson places Jesus’ death and resurrection in today’s evolutionary and cosmic context, connecting human suffering and the suffering of all creation. What we are experiencing in our daily lives as protecting ourselves from COVID-19 has disconnected us from each other, cleared our skies, and raised havoc with livelihoods among our poorest neighbors. What we are experiencing as protest liturgies in our streets and around the world is seeking justice for all the oppressed who know the knee on the neck that killed George Floyd. Protest litanies insist we say his name and those killed before him. Black Lives Matter. As people sweep up the broken glass of neighbors’ lives and livelihoods, what are we learning? What are we learning about the brokenness and suffering embedded within the lands, waters, our interdependencies and the shared life of beings in our planetary ecologies? How do we live resurrection and the mystery of holy surprise? 4

Primary Texts: Creation and the Cross: The Mercy of God for a Planet in Peril, Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ. ARTIST REFLECTION SERIES BUILD ME A BOAT: the art of hope / the hope of art A VIRTUAL POETRY READING BY MICHAEL In this time of pandemics and great social movement, how DENNIS BROWNE do we nourish that little seed of hope? What is the practice of hope? How is it an art form? How does the practice of art inform our hope?

In this online class, artist Bob Schmitt will lead three reflective conversations around these questions, inviting us more deeply into a practice of hope. The starting point will be his massive 15’ x 2’ painting of dawn at Mather Point, Grand Canyon. Since March 25, Bob has considered hope from many angles as he developed the piece during the COVID-19 pandemic. Come explore hope in reflected light, hope looking into the abyss, and hope in rebrilliance, while you nurture your practice. Facilitator: Bob Schmitt is a Quaker and a student and teacher of Chinese calligraphy and painting who lives and paints a stone’s throw from Minnehaha Falls. He began brush painting as a 12-year-old watching public television and has studied weekly with a Chinese painting master for over 20 years. Learn more at www.laughingwatersstudio.com. Thursdays, September 17 and 24, October 1, 7:00 to 8:00 pm CST via Zoom. You are welcome to attend as a series or any of the three individual sessions. COST: Donation. RSVP to 651-696-2788 or info@wisdomwayscenter.org. WHEN:

Savor an evening of beauty and reflection, anchoring us in the hope that both poetry and music offer to us. Join poet Michael Dennis Browne as he interweaves music clips and words in a virtual reading from his new book Build Me a Boat, which gathers words that Browne has written for music over the past fifty years. Some are poems written with music in mind—others are lyrics, song cycles, songs for children, and libretti written as he collaborated with a number of different composers. The result is a volume that sits comfortably between poetry and music, lyrical and rhythmic and memorable. Poet: Two of Michael Dennis Browne’s collections of poetry have won the Minnesota Book Award for poetry. As a librettist and lyricist, he has written many texts for music, working for almost four decades with the late composer Stephen Paulus (To Be Certain of the Dawn, a postHolocaust oratorio) and now Craig Hella Johnson (Considering Matthew Shepard). A professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota, his most recent collection of poetry is Chimes. Wednesday, November 11, 7:00 to 8:30 pm CST via Zoom COST: $20.00 WHEN:

THE ENNEAGRAM AND TAO TE CHING: 9 WAYS TO MOVE FROM FIXATION TO FLOW

Living with flow is the aim of both the Enneagram and the Tao Te Ching. Both of these wisdom traditions are designed to free us from fixated and conditioned personalities that keep us caught in limiting patterns and perspectives. This course is a contemplative journey into 9 themes that converge when the 9 Enneagram types are aligned with ancient wisdom from the Tao Te Ching. Each theme is a spiritual pathway that illuminates ancient wisdom and speaks to our contemporary life-challenges. And, each theme invites us into the dynamic Enneagram that releases us from our constricted dominant type. After an overview of the Enneagram, the Tao, and their interrelatedness, the course will follow a contemplative process for each of the 9 themes that includes a presentation, silence for personal journaling, and then group reflections. We end the course by examining the spirituality that follows the flow of the inner lines and takes us into a wholeness that weaves together all 9 types.

It is so easy to find oneself on high alert, tense and exhausted by living through times with high levels of uncertainty and change. Our bodies so easily flip into a fight-or-flight mode, blocking our creativity, love, resilience, and hope. The antidote is to find ways to come home deeply to ourselves. At home in our bodies. Deeply at home in nature. At home in the universe and the unfolding story of the cosmos. At home even in the midst of our present evolutionary crisis. Our bodies are the key to helping the peace and wisdom within our spiritual practices “stick to our bones.” Come learn a series of simple, gentle movement meditations to connect with your body and with nature. After we learn the fundamental movements together online, you will use the audio tracks sent to you before class to guide you in your solo practice in your home or garden. At the end of our one-session class, we will reconvene online to share our experiences. The final movement meditation we’ll learn is a simple traditional govand dance from Armenia, part of a body of women’s ritual dances that have transmitted women’s wisdom consciously through time. Come explore dance as a form of transformed contemplation.

Two books will guide us: Roaming Free Inside the Cage: A Daoist Approach to the Enneagram by William M. Schafer and A Path and a Practice: Using Lao-Tzu’s Tao Te Ching as a Guide to an Awakened Spiritual Life by William Martin. You are encouraged, but not required, to obtain and explore these books.

People of all cultures, genders, and abilities are welcome. Participate while seated or standing, entirely inside or with some time outside. This class is being offered twice; both sessions are the same, but you are welcome to register for each individual session and experience this class in new ways.

Facilitator: Scott McRae has been involved in spiritual work in various forms for 30 years and feels like he’s just getting started. His professional journey has included parish and campus ministry, as well as spiritual care leadership in health care. A pastoral educator for M Health Fairview, a spiritual director, and an Enneagram teacher and coach, he also runs Sojourners Institute with his wife Melanie. Facilitator: Dancer, healer and teacher Emily Jarrett Hughes helps people seeking transformation for themselves and for the world. DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS: THE ART AND SCIENCE OF WORKING TOGETHER We live in a moment of tremendous hope and opportunity — a moment that’s ripe for us to address the social, environmental and economic issues far too long ignored, and to do so with courage, compassion and, especially important, commitment.

Facilitator: Kern Beare is a former Silicon Valley communications professional with deep roots in the fields of interpersonal communication and conflict resolution. In 2016, following the U.S. Presidential election, Kern launched the Difficult Conversations Project, an initiative to help address our national divide. He leads non-profit seminars and workshops on how to heal relationships and unleash our capacity for creative collaboration. WHEN: Thursdays, COST:

Come encounter and embrace a framework and a process to help us meet this moment successfully and with the recognition that we cannot do this alone. Focusing on the question Who do we need to be to have the transformative conversations we need to have?, this interactive workshop offers a powerful set of research-based principles and strategies that will equip you to creatively engage in meaningful and productive dialogue with anyone — an essential skill if we’re to heal, resolve, and move forward together as one. Through presentations, small- and large-group discussion, and exercises, you will more deeply understand: • The psychological and neurological dynamics that turn conversations into conflicts. • How a focus on relationship can unlock new possibilities for radical transformation. •H ow your personal story can be both a barrier and a bridge to understanding and resolution. • How to look “beyond” your personal story to access more easily and deeply your innate capacity for connection, creativity and collaboration. •H ow to apply these tools and strategies to a difficult conversation in your own life. Limited to 10 participants.

MOVING THE RACE CONVERSATION FORWARD WITH THE ENNEAGRAM Start or continue to work toward antiracism by identifying internalized narratives, inviting body awareness, and engaging presence practices in this three-part online workshop. Together, we will explore racism not as a personal choice but as a collective, often subconscious, reality that affects literally every person who grew up in Western cultures. Like our Enneagram types, racism tells a story of who we are that is incomplete. Through presentations, small group conversations, exercises, breakout caucus groups for white people and people of

The facilitators believe that this work, for both people of color and white people, is not only possible but essential for personal and communal healing. By doing deep inward work for the sake of social transformation, we discover how to shed false narratives and unearth truth. For participants of color, this workshop will give language and tools for engaging internalized oppression and healing wounds. For white participants, this workshop will increase awareness of unintentional reinforcement of oppression and options for choosing a new way. Facilitators: Rev. CENTERING PRAYER CIRCLE

Terry Shaughnessy is the Wisdom Ways Men’s Spirituality Coordinator.

Wisdom Ways Men’s Centering Prayer circles have been creating a hope-filled space for men to gather in person over the past six years. During these times it’s more important than ever for us to continue supporting our practice, only now we’ll shift our meetings to an online format. With the constant ways modern communication is drawing our attention, we all need specific times for silence and quiet to support rich inner lives. Centering Prayer is the “prayer beyond words”, a practice of self-surrender that supports extending interior silence into daily life.

Both facilitators are available for private consultation and teachings on how to start and develop the practice of Centering Prayer. Find additional teaching materials from Fr. Thomas Keating at www. contemplativeoutreach.org/resources/.

Please join us as we gather to experience Centering Prayer, have a short sharing and offer support among men from a variety of experience levels.

Spiritual Practices for Everyday Living

WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR Introductory Workshop

Monthly Writing Sessions: Second Fridays

Spiritual memoir is the practice of listening deeply to our life experiences through the creation of artful, true stories. We come more alive when we accept how our experiences have formed us and when we form something of what we’ve experienced. By writing memories with intention, we can find holiness in the details, patterns that unify our sense of self, and deep personal healing. By crafting our stories to engage the inner life of readers, we can participate in transforming our world.

Monthly online drop-in sessions focus on different aspects of writing spiritual memoir: themes that commonly arise, craft techniques, challenges and joys of the writing process, and practices for opening our work to the spirit’s movement. Sessions include writing exercises, examples from leading and emerging writers, lecture, and small group conversation. To support individual writers and writing groups in the ever-deepening practice of writing spiritual memoir, time is included for participant questions.

Join Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew for an introduction to the art and spiritual practice of writing memoir. What is memoir, and how is it different from autobiography? What makes memoir spiritual? How can the practice of writing memoir, whether for an audience or no audience, support spiritual growth? We will start with the basics, using writing exercises, readings from master writers, and conversation. We will also discuss how to sustain the practice with writing partners or small groups.

Each online session will be facilitated by Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew via Zoom. Elizabeth will reflect on the day’s theme and provide readings, writing prompts and handouts with craft advice. The sessions will allow time for small group breakout discussion as well as large group discussion and questions.

During this self-paced, two-and-a-half-week independent study, writers can view Elizabeth’s video lectures, respond to writing prompts, and immerse themselves in the genre and practice of spiritual memoir through readings and a community forum. Elizabeth will meet with the class via Zoom once as well as comment in the course forum. Registered participants will be able to access the course from September 8 - 25. COST: $50.00 WHEN:

September: Writing Our Way to Hope Writing, when understood as a spiritual practice, invites us into a new relationship with hope—away from hope for an outcome toward hope as a wellspring. Together we’ll harvest memories of this more mystical experience of hope and cultivate healthy, hopeful writing practices to sustain us through these difficult times.

October: Holy Play If we don’t take ourselves too seriously, writing can knock our socks off! We’ll use whimsical entries into memory, learning how to shake off the inner critic and welcome the unexpected, ever-creating spirit.

November: Writing Trauma, with Susan Power How do we write difficult memories with open hearts, good self-care, and art? How do we write in traumatic times? “Let story go where it wants to go,” author Susan Power advises. Power will guide us through different strategies—including fiction—for writing about trauma and getting at the truth of our experience.

All Fall 2020 programs will be held virtually, unless otherwise noted.

O ANTIPHONS: ADVENT NAMES OF GOD Paintings by Ansgar Holmberg, CSJ

Seven short verses are sung before the Magnificat during the Evening Prayer of the Church on the seven days before the vigil of Christmas. Each begins with the exclamation “O”. Each ends with a plea for the Messiah to come. These O Antiphons, as they are known, were composed in the seventh or eighth century when monks put together texts from the Old Testament that looked forward to the coming of our salvation. They form a rich mosaic of scriptural images and became very popular in the Middle Ages. Holmberg’s images invite a transformation from the traditional O Antiphons into the context of evolutionary cosmology. Poetry by Joan Mitchell, CSJ, complements these images celebrating the incarnation of God as one of us in Jesus. ARTIST: Ansgar Holmberg, CSJ, studied with renowned liturgical artist Ade Bethune. Holmberg’s color-saturated works are more reminiscent of folk art than conventional religious images. Her art arises from her own spiritual journey and life changes. Her interpretations of themes are not fixed in the manner of icons, but ever changing through time. WHEN: December. Art exhibits are located on the first floor of the Carondelet Center. SPIRITUAL DIRECTION

Spiritual Direction is a meeting with a director who is trained in the art of spiritual listening. It nurtures a deeper relationship with the spiritual aspect of being human in relationship with the divine. A space is created for one to learn and grow in their spirituality. Persons seeking direction share stories of their encounters of the divine, or how they are experiencing spiritual issues. It is not counseling or psychotherapy. The Christian practice of spiritual direction dates back to the third and fourth centuries when people sought the wisdom of the desert mystics. If you seek spiritual direction, the following Spiritual Directors are available to support you on your journey.

SECOND SUNDAY

Second Sunday is a community circle in which women, men and families gather to reflect together on the Sunday scriptures. Second Sunday began among the Sisters of St. Joseph in three community houses. We reflect on the Sunday gospel and nourish one another’s lives with this sharing. We share bread and wine and lift up the prayers of all gathered and concerns for the world. Following, we drink coffee and enjoy treats. All are welcome and invited to come when you can. The group is a new blessing each month. WHEN: Second Sunday of each month, 10:00 am WHERE: Carondelet Center, 1890 Randolph Ave., St. CONTACT: Joan Mitchell, CSJ, 651-690-7012
