WELCOME
CREATION
13.8 billion years... ...into the Creation Story, the marvelous wheel of darkness and light, winter and spring, death and resurrection is a constant reminder that Creation is sacred work. And we are part of it. Birthing, shifting, planting, moving, pushing, challenging, naming, disturbing, tending, dying—we are created and creating, invited by the Holy Creator beyond our experiences and perceptions into what we can only imagine. This season, we’ll pay deep attention to the myriad ways that the Holy is everywhere present, suffusing creation with Life and Love. Together we’ll open ourselves to the familiar in a new way. We’ll honor what is dying and dissolving…
OUR MISSION
make room for what is being remade and remaking us… and respond to all of it from a deep trust in the flow of creation and Creator. As one season passes to another, we are rooted here. We draw on the strength of Earth, soil and leaves, seeds and stars, and the generations of all Life that have gone before us. May we savor our place in the unfolding creation story, as part of and partakers in God’s promise. Rev. Barbara Lund, Director

MARIAM BY FAIZA AMBAH + SHORTS Mizna Arab Film Fest 2018 Tour
MORE THAN A SINGLE STORY: RITUALS AND CULTURAL STORIES THAT SUSTAIN US How do rituals and ancestral stories carry us? How does writing reflect those stories? Carolyn Holbrook and a panel of writers of color and indigenous writers will probe these questions in a More Than a Single Story conversation. These conversations were inspired by Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s powerful TED talk, The Danger of a Single Story, showing how stereotypes are fostered when we treat one story of a people as their only story.
What if you had to choose between an education and your identity? Many students faced this choice after France implemented the so-called “headscarf ban”, which banned religious symbols from public schools. Mariam invites us to see through the eyes of a French Muslim teenager who considers wearing hijab an expression of her personal faith and, by extension, her identity. Removing her veil means compromising that identity. Leaving it on could jeopardize her education and future success. A rare portrait of the coming-of-age of a Muslim teen, Mariam addresses Islamophobia, the diversity of the Muslim experience, the choice of some Muslim women to wear the hijab, and the assimilation and acceptance of Muslims in the west. Written and directed by Saudi filmmaker and former Washington Post Gulf correspondent Faiza Ambah, the film was awarded the Special Jury Prize at 2015 Dubai International Film Festival. The 45-minute film, accompanying shorts and discussion are part of the Mizna Arab Film Fest, which invites us to engage with authentic narratives by contemporary Arab filmmakers. Mary Moore Easter’s new collection of poetry is The Body of the World. ROOT WORDS Prairie grasses have roots twice as long as their height, deep footings that steady them against unremitting winds that sweep across the plains. Their roots reach beneath the parched earth stricken by heat and cold and nourish them on the remnants of a vast inland sea that teemed with copious sounds of life long ago. Our language is like those prairie grasses surviving the fires of missionaries and their gods, floods of English words, drought, growing in unexpected places as if it had never been gone. . THIS IS MY EXPLAINING CEREMONY
TO TILL AND TO KEEP: OUR CALLING TO BE STEWARDS OF GOD’S CREATION Begone all notions that there is only a single view of creation in Scripture! Together we will explore ten different ways that Scripture speaks of creation. In each “portrait”—drawn from Genesis, Psalms, Job, some law, some prophets, Proverbs, and a bit of Paul, John, and Revelation—we’ll give special emphasis to the implied human role. Bring your Bibles, engage in reflection, readings, music and new insights for a time when the climate, the human role, and the concept of ‘steward’ are all in flux. Diane Jacobson, professor emerita of Old Testament at Luther Seminary in St. Paul. A frequent speaker and author of many publications, Jacobson is a lover of Scripture whose calling is to teach Scripture for the sake of God’s world, and to invite others into the wonders and rewards of exploring the Bible together. Border CrosSing is led by Ahmed Fernando Anzaldúa El Samkary, a Mexican conductor and pianist of Egyptian descent who is a recognized authority in Latin American and Spanish music and co-editor of the Justice Choir songbook. My strongest memories are of water. A rough rock ledge that reached out for the horizon beyond the lake, holding a perfect place to play in its palm. Cradled by the beat of waves washing ashore, I watched slick, black-green moss sway in clear swells, and was not afraid at four. Sounds of water comfort me. At ten, I splashed through 14-Mile Creek with my cousins, turning over smooth stones and sharp rocks with flattened, shining forks tied to long willow sticks. We speared unsuspecting blue and gold crawdad treats hiding in the deep swift stream. Our grandmas gathered glistening green watercress for a summer feast, but a child with fastfood tastes, I refused to eat. Sounds of water connect me. Near the old home place, my grandma said, the spring at Greasy Mountain never runs dry and the edge of 100 Highway always crumbles with each late winter thaw. I followed the black asphalt road as it snakes toward the turnout for the spring, and took my children there to drink the water, clear and cold. Sounds of water call me. A grandma’s words that can fill a rain barrel or wash away fences and fields like a flood. Sounds that bring life ticking on a tin roof, that sting bare legs and hearts. Sounds of water flowing. Sounds of water falling. Sounds of water filling.

HEDGEROW INITIATIVE
The Hedgerow Initiative offers sustained, systematic programming in feminist theological education, spiritual integration, and leadership for a just and holy world. In a particular way, the Initiative highlights the scholarship of women who since the 1950s have worked to reclaim women’s presence and significance in scripture, church, history, theology and culture. The Initiative takes its name from the hedgerow schools in Ireland that kept alive the language, faith, culture and community of the people during the time of the British penal codes. A hedgerow is a biosphere and a haven.
IN THE MYSTERY: COMMUNITY AND CREED IN PROCESS
Primary Texts: Elizabeth Johnson, She Who Is: The Mystery of God in Feminist Theological Discourse and Catherine Keller, On the Mystery: Discerning Divinity in Process. Articles will be provided throughout the course. Find the syllabus at www.wisdomwayscenter.org
Evolution is our story; Earth, our common home, where we are part of an interconnected, unfolding whole. New science and theologies help us name our experience, probe our questions, and direct our prayers. In our new framework we find God, long imagined above and apart, now more immanent— with, in, and among us.
Instructors: Joan Mitchell, CSJ, PhD; Mary Kaye Medinger, MA; Rev. Barbara Lund; Nancy VictorinVangerud, PhD; and guest lecturers.
New questions provoke new language to open our theological imaginations to fresh insights. This course journeys toward the 25th anniversary of the transformative 1993 Re-Imagining Conference using texts by ecofeminist theologian Elizabeth Johnson, CSJ, and process theologian Catherine Keller. Johnson nourishes the Creed with the living tradition of her book She Who Is and helps us recognize the Spirit in our experience. Keller leads us beyond the binary, the absolute and the dissolute, to the resolute, to commitment and action.

A CONVERSATION WITH MINNESOTA SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ANNE MCKEIG
Sisters of St. Joseph Justice Commission’s Native American Awareness Working Group and Wisdom Ways invite you to an evening with Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Anne McKeig. She rose from poverty and other challenges in the tiny town of Federal Dam, near Leech Lake, to become the 94th associate justice—and the first Native American—on the state Supreme Court. A descendant of White Earth Nation, McKeig has specialized in child protection and Indian welfare issues. “We as a community have an obligation to work on behalf of all children, for it truly takes a village to raise a child,” McKeig said at her swearing-in ceremony at her alma mater, St. Catherine University. As part of her promise to do her best to serve all Minnesotans, she also promised not to “forget who I am or where I came from.” WHEN: Thursday, February 8, 6:30 to 8:30 COST: Free. In its creation, the enso- challenges painter/practitioners to be present, to be open, to be flexible, and to be honest. It requires putting themselves totally in the stroke and totally getting out of the way in its expression at the same moment. Painting the enso- is a koan in motion. Pick up the brush and get ready to leap into this moment. No experience or talent is needed; laughter and encouragement are guaranteed! Come learn the practice of grinding ink and loading brush, practice the immediacy of putting ink to paper, explore the honesty of working with these ancient materials, and discover how much can be revealed in painting a simple circle.
Facilitator: Bob Schmitt is a Quaker and a student and teacher of Chinese calligraphy and painting who lives and paints a stone’s throw from Minnehaha Falls. ONE STROKE MAKES A PAINTING: THE ZEN OF BRUSH PAINTING The form of the circle is iconic to the formation of many languages, be it as a symbol for the moon, the sun, the wheel of reality. Known as the enso- in Japan, it is the most common subject of zen calligraphy. Its essence can be difficult to grasp. Is it just a circle painted in one stroke, or is it the totality of our existence? Is it creating an enclosure in the chaos or is it defining nothingness?

MIGRATION The windows vibrate as their voices reverberate through the trees behind the house filling the ravine with their chatter and the clatter of their wings warming and drying in the morning sun moving the air around themselves as their calls grow louder and faster cheering with anticipation for the arrival of some yet unseen occurrence and caught up in the excitement I rush out and am stunned by the volume of their cries and the trees in full bloom shimmering black and alive glimmering with bursts of red and yellow and in an instant as if on a single command tens of thousands of blackbirds take flight within my reach pulsating the air around me as their beating wings lift my fears away the sky grows dark and becomes an ocean of songs I have never heard before.
AN INTRODUCTION TO THE ENNEAGRAM: 9 WAYS TO MOVE FROM TRANCE TO DANCE “ I’ve learned that every mortal will taste death. But only some will taste life.” * RUMI
The Enneagram is a map for shifting our inner lives so that we flourish more in our outer lives. It is a system for self-development that uses a nine-pointed figure to portray nine basic personality styles. Each type views life through a particular lens that shapes what we notice and value, what we see as ideal, and what we want to avoid. This narrowed perception becomes a kind of trance. This map also shows each type its unique pathway to freedom that comes with our type. We flourish as we access all nine ways of being in the world. Weaving together ancient wisdom, contemporary psychology, and contemplative spirituality the Enneagram is a tool that transforms lives and taps into something universal in the nature and functioning of human beings. Session One: The Human Challenge: Awakening to the Trance. The history of the Enneagram; the human struggle to move from our small entranced selves to our vital essential selves; the model of the Enneagram; and a first look at the 9 types. Session Two: Exploring the 9 Types: 9 Pathways to Freedom. A deeper look at the 9 types: the various ruts that each type falls into; the pathways out of the ruts; and the unique gifts that each type possesses.

RAMBUNCTIOUS GARDEN: AN EVENING WITH EMMA MARRIS Co-hosted by St. Catherine University and Wisdom Ways Nature is not something that is ‘out there’ and separate from our daily lives, says writer Emma Marris. Instead we are surrounded by a rambunctious garden that has been shaped by human beings—which raises significant questions. If no ecosystem is pristine and we cannot go back to a natural world untouched by human activity, how will we go forward? How do we conserve, protect, and engage with nature? What is nature and what is our place within it? Drawing on her work with a diverse group of scientists and community leaders, Marris answers some of these questions, offering ways to embrace nature in our backyards and cities and make decisions that benefit conservation, species diversity, and 12
environmental health in a ‘post-wild world’. For Earth Day, she’ll help us understand the science and ecology principles at work in ecosystems so we can become part of the design team that shapes how our world looks and functions.
Science writer Emma Marris, author of The Rambunctious Garden, tells stories that help us understand the past, take meaningful action in the present, and move towards a greener, wilder, happier, and more equal future. Her stories have been featured in the New York Times, Nature, Orion, and National Geographic. MEN’S BODY MOVEMENT THROUGH YOGA
ON THE THRESHOLD OF TRANSFORMATION
For too long most of us, especially men, have lived in our heads. We analyze, judge and criticize, which often leads to disassociation and isolation. Most of us are carrying around a spectrum of challenging emotions unprocessed in our bodies. Descending into our physical body is a way to reclaim more of our body’s strength and flexibility, our heart’s emotions, and our soul’s wisdom. Come explore the body using breath awareness, postures, movement, and non-judgmental observation. Together we’ll not only release tension but also integrate mind, body, and heart to illumine the peace within. Bring comfortable clothing to experience easy postures that will support spiritual body connections and which can easily be connected to practices you can continue at home.
In these culturally chaotic times, when so many male role models are falling from grace and revealing the dark underside of masculinity, where do we turn for clarity, discernment and proper action? How do we find a balancing point?
Facilitator: Yoga teacher, massage therapist and health and wellness coach Chris Gordon owns and directs Big River Yoga, a center for wellness. Chris applies the ancient wisdom teachings of yoga and meditation to modern life. His teaching is clear, down to earth and accessible. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $40.00

One resource is the work of Fr. Richard Rohr, a globally recognized ecumenical teacher who leads men’s rites of passage retreats and addresses many aspects of masculine spirituality. He sees pain as a primary doorway through which we can pass to reach our best and authentic selves. His On the Threshold of Transformation supports men in learning how to transform their pain so they don’t harmfully pass it on. Join us for a series of informative gatherings designed to support men in exploring themes of healthy masculinity as expressed by this contemporary wisdom teacher. Together we will share, reflect and write as we examine themes from the daily meditation book, including the Male in Culture and Society: God, Power & Shame; the Paradox of Transformation: Change, Suffering and Freedom; and Male Archetypes and the Integrated Man: King, Magician and Lover. Each offers a backdrop for group discussions, private reflections and further application in our lives following the workshop.

MEDITATION
CHRISTIAN MEDITATION: A WAY OF CONTEMPLATIVE PRAYER
Union with God is not something we acquire by a technique but the grounding truth of our lives that engenders the very search for God.
CHRISTIAN MEDITATION DURING LENT Lent is a time of preparation. Through prayer and fasting, we ready ourselves to enter into the celebration of the central Christian mystery of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Wisdom Ways offers varied ways to move toward the transforming experience of this sacred event. Ash Wednesday Meditation Ritual
* M ARTIN LAIRD OSA
Meditation is a form of contemplative prayer in which we move beyond words, thoughts, and images. We open ourselves to God’s mysterious and silent presence within us and it becomes more and more the reality of our lives. From this place of prayer we engage in our work in the world. This spring, Wisdom Ways invites you to experience Christian contemplative prayer.
TUESDAY EVENING MEDITATION
The ancient ritual of being marked with ashes that begins the season of Lent calls us back to ourselves, to our roots in Earth and in the stardust from which the universe expanded. The ashes are a sign of our will to live anew, mending torn relationships, healing damaged commitments, and embracing Holy Mystery. In the quiet of Ash Wednesday evening, we will gather to bless and receive our Lenten ashes and enter into a communal time of contemplative prayer. WHEN: Wednesday, February 14, 7:00 to 8:00 pm WHERE: Our Lady of Presentation Chapel COST: Registration is not required and the ritual
is free
Tuesday Meditations The weekly meditation sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation.
During these times of prayer, we will sit in silent meditation with others. Meditating together is a way of deepening and supporting our personal practice. The weekly sessions include a short reading and one 25-minute meditation. Following meditation, there will an optional short introduction to Christian Meditation for those new to this form of prayer. Come as often as you are able. WHEN: Tuesdays, January 2 to June 5, 7:00 to 7:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free
Tuesday, February 20 – March 27, 12:00 to 12:40 pm and 7:00 to 7:40 pm COST: Registration is not required and sessions are free WHEN:
Morning Meditation Retreat This Lenten morning retreat provides a more extended and focused time to deepen our existing practice of meditation. Our morning in silence will include a pattern of sitting and walking meditations, mindful movements, and chanting. WHEN: Saturday, COST: $15.00

LECTIO DIVINA: MORNINGS OF REFLECTION DURING LENT Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading is the slow, repetitive reading of a sacred text that leads one to the ultimate step of resting in God. It is not Scripture study, nor is it spiritual reading. It is an invitation to take a “long, loving look at Scripture” says spiritual director Teresa Blythe. “It is a time for falling in love with the Word and experiencing the goodness of God.” This four-step process for being with Scripture in a prayerful manner includes: Reading (Lectio); Meditating (Meditatio); Praying (Oratio); and Contemplating (Contemplatio). Using texts for Lent, you will experience this ancient prayer form in a group setting, though it is easily adapted to individual practice and can be incorporated into your prayer life. Facilitator: Pat Jones is a spiritual director, Psychologist Emeritus, and former Benedictine. Mondays, February 19, 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26, 10:00 to 11:00 am COST: Free. RSVP to 651-696-2788 or info@wisdomwayscenter.org WHEN:
LENTEN RETREAT: THE FULLNESS OF HUMANITY Our retreat day will be an exploration into the Christian understanding of human growth and development fully realized. Jesus gave us tools and teachings that assist us in this work. We will explore those teachings and practices that are essential. Aided by the Spirit sent to us, we can become, as Jesus was, a fully developed human being. Episcopal priest Ward Bauman has been a retreat leader and teacher of Christian mysticism for over 30 years. Traveling the world he has explored the depths of the Christian tradition as well as Sufism, Buddhism and Jewish mysticism. WHEN: Saturday, February 17, COST: $65.00, includes lunch

THE WELCOMING PRAYER A Contemplative Practice Central to many religious traditions is developing awareness of how thoughts and emotions dominate much of our focus of attention. To “let go and let God” requires some type of practice focused on surrendering our well-developed and overprotective egos or false self. The Welcoming Prayer is a simple and practical way to let go of the afflictive emotions that arise regularly. This is a discipline for daily life which originated through Centering Prayer, as a supplemental practice during active times. Join us as we learn through practice this way of being present to reality by being free from the painful narratives that frequently hold us captive.
GROUP SPIRITUAL DIRECTION DURING LENT As the days lengthen, seasons change and winter becomes spring. In both the calendar year and the liturgical year, we are called to new life. In a small circle of spiritual sharing, explore the creativity that is budding within you! Group spiritual direction is a process in which people gather together on a regular basis to assist one another in an ongoing awareness of Sacred Mystery in all of life. Participants support one another in their responsiveness to the Holy. Give yourself this springtime gift! Read about facilitator Mary Kaye Medinger, MA on page 6. WHEN: Thursdays, COST: $125.00

“ The Welcoming Prayer more than holds its own as a tool of inner awakening, and used with this deliberate intention, it can take you all the way there. It is the most important practice I know of to engage the attention of the heart and apply it to the total transformation of consciousness.” *C YNTHIA BOURGEAULT
Facilitator: Terry Shaughnessy first learned the Welcoming Prayer practice in 1992 from Mary Mrozowski, the creator and spiritual mother of the practice. This simple yet profound spiritual tool has enriched his Centering Prayer practice and helped provide freedom from much unnecessary suffering. SPIRITUAL PRACTICES
WRITING THE SACRED JOURNEY: THE ART AND PRACTICE OF SPIRITUAL MEMOIR Introductory Workshop
Spiritual memoir is the practice of listening deeply to life experiences through the creation of artful, true stories. We come more alive when we accept how our experiences have formed us and when we form something from what we’ve experienced. It’s possible to find holiness in the details of our memories, in the patterns that unify our sense of self, and in the deep personal healing that comes when we write. By crafting our stories to engage the inner lives of readers, we participate in transforming our world. Join Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew for an introduction to the art and spiritual practice of writing memoir. What is memoir, and how is it different from autobiography? What makes memoir spiritual? How can memoir writing, whether for an audience or no audience, support spiritual growth? We will start with the basics, using writing exercises, readings from master writers, and conversation. WHEN: Friday, COST: $40.00
February 9, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm
MONTHLY WRITING SESSIONS: SECOND FRIDAYS Monthly drop-in sessions focus on different aspects of writing spiritual memoir: themes that commonly arise, craft techniques, challenges and joys of the writing process, and practices for opening our work to the Spirit’s movement. Sessions include writing exercises, examples from leading and emerging writers, lecture, and small group conversation. February: Cultivating Love “What goes on in your innermost being is worthy of your whole love,” Rilke told the young poet. Writing memories can be an expression of this love. We’ll grapple lovingly with 18
our past, practice writing as a loving act, and open ourselves to receiving love through the creative process. March: Holy Resistance Sometimes resistance—to creativity, to spiritual practice—is a sign that our small, limited self feels threatened by the True Self. When we resist the process of writing or the material that arises, how can we open our hearts to transformation? April: Living the Questions Questions pry open possibilities, expose alternatives, ask that we see through new eyes, motivate, open us to love—and are a writer’s best tool. We’ll explore questions as portals into memory and instruments of revision. Facilitated by Carolyn Holbrook. May: The Natural World “Earth’s crammed with heaven, / And every common bush afire with God,” writes Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Together we’ll plumb memory for encounters with the natural world— animals, plants, weather, elements, seasons, landscapes— seeking the heaven crammed within. June: Looking Back, Seeing Again The roots of the word “respect” mean “to look back at.” The roots of the word “revision” mean “to see again.” We’ll explore revision as a way to gain respect—and reverence— for our experiences. Facilitator: Writing instructor and spiritual director Elizabeth Jarrett Andrew is the author of Writing the Sacred Journey: The Art and Practice of Spiritual Memoir; Living Revision: A Writer’s Craft as Spiritual Practice; and many other books, essays, and short memoirs. Her work explores the intersections between spiritual growth and the creative process. More at www.elizabethjarrettandrew.com. Learn more about Carolyn Holbrook on page 4. Fridays, February 9, March 9, April 13, May 11, June 8 1:30 to 3:30 pm COST: $120.00 for the series; $30.00 per session Introductory workshop is not a prerequisite for the monthly writing sessions. HEARTSONGS OF POETRY Join us for a session of poetry for writers at all levels: meet the muse, explore nature, and capture a moment in your life in the form of a poem. Through a playful approach to writing, participants will be guided in the creation of poems straight from the heart. We’ll use tools such as metaphor and anaphora (pattern) to create vivid and compelling pieces of writing. In the process we might discover, like famed poet Maya Angela, that “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.” Facilitator: Read about Marie Olofsdotter on page 22. WHEN: Thursday, COST: $20.00

LINEAR PROCESS Our elders say the universe is a circle. Everything returns to its beginnings. But where do we go from here? Where are our beginnings? Our parents were stripped of their parents names tongues prayers, lined up for their meals clothes classes tests. When it was our turn to come into this world, they did not know what family meant anymore. They did not know. Yet even from here, we can see that the straightest line on a map is a circle.

HONORING CREATION IN SEASONAL RITUALS
SPIRITUAL DIRECTION
We have had HOPE in the Wheel of the year. Now is the time for action. The Wheel of the year is a turning point when we lift our eyes from inner remembrance and reflection and begin to envision the seasons of growth that lie ahead. Envisioning, we move to make it happen, making room in our lives for the Creator’s new gifts of Wonder.
Spiritual Direction is the practice of being with people as they attempt to deepen their relationship with the divine. In spiritual direction, space is created for one to learn and grow in their spirituality. The person seeking direction shares stories of his or her encounters of the divine, or how he or she is experiencing spiritual issues.

LOOKING AHEAD A RETREAT WITH JOYCE RUPP AND SARA THOMSEN SEPTEMBER 22, 2018
SKIN ESSENTIALS I. They say beauty is only skin deep, but the aisles at Walgreens overflow with promises of astonishing immediate results! Shelves, endcaps, bins spill over with essences of everything— essential fragrances, essential products, essential needs. Revolutionary, the box says, includes essential oils to make you think it’s the real thing. Available for a limited time only at a special introductory price. And there amid the glamour and the hype it beckons and gleams: Skin Essentials—free after rebate! Just send in the original receipt and proof of purchase. No cost. No risk. No sacrifice.
II. Essence is a noun. The intrinsic or indispensable properties that identify who we are— eagerly grabbed by those who want to capture the aura, the basics of Indianness, without the cost. They mask their own deficiencies with a light application of shawl fringe and beadwork, assumed names and assumed authority. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat until the fragrance covers the lack of substance. Prayers. Relatives. Ceremonies. Connections to what is real. There is an essence to who we are. And a coupon from Walgreens cannot be redeemed here.
