wisconsin's technical colleges We are futuremakers

Your life, your time, your college.

YOUR CAREER AWAITS Wisconsin’s technical colleges are transforming the traditional concept of higher education into a more modern approach. Greater flexibility and more delivery options remove barriers and benefit more students and employers. Wisconsin’s technical colleges offer more types of programs, diplomas and degrees than ever before. Whether you want to try your hand at a career-focused course that interests you, to refresh your current job skills, build up your resume through industry certification or begin an entirely new career, you’re at the right place.

2

The technical colleges offer the skills employers need and the flexibility to manage your education alongside your busy life. Delivery options are expanding too, so you can vary the pace and timing of your classes. Some programs include short-term, intensive training sessions (sometimes called ‘boot camps’) to help you learn a lot on a short timeline. Many courses offer evening and off-peak learning opportunities, and many are available online. The technical colleges help you reach your educational goals on your schedule, with minimal disruptions to your other commitments and responsibilities. Whatever you choose, you can be confident your degree-based credits will apply to future degrees through technical colleges or through our 600-plus programto-program transfer agreements through the UW Colleges and Universities.

New approches to a flexible education;

PATHWAYS FOR SUCCESS There are many options to help you along the path to your career. You can always start small and build on your success. Career Pathways helps maximize your education investment, one step at a time. The idea is to make your education as efficient as possible, so you can earn a certificate and then turn it into a technical degree, or earn a technical degree and then turn it into an associate degree. If life gets complicated and you veer off the path, your education should be flexible and offer enough options that you can make adjustments along the way without having to sacrifice all you’ve already done. The Career Pathways idea allows you to take a break from school for other responsibilities and jump back in when you’re ready. You can benefit from your past work and education experience while applying your credits toward future educational milestones, perhaps a bachelor’s degree or beyond.

College Credit for High School Students

YOUR FUTURE BEGINS TODAY

Get a jump start on your career and gather high school and college credits at the same time, at no cost. Just another reason Wisconsin’s technical colleges are the ideal launching pad for your higher education and career. Dual credit (also called advanced standing or transcripted credit) provides over 25,000 Wisconsin students the opportunity to take college-level coursework in high school. These students have a head start on college credits while fulfilling high school graduation requirements. Explore the many opportunities to earn college credit in high school: http://www.wistechcolleges.org/preparing-college. More than 2,500 high school juniors and seniors attend a Wisconsin technical college to take courses not offered in high school. Given school board approval, students earn credits toward high school graduation and a college degree. The school district pays for tuition and books as long as you do not fail or drop the course. YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR YOUTH OPTIONS IF YOU: Attend a public high school in Wisconsin and have completed 10th grade. Are in good academic standing and meet course entry requirements. Have an acceptable disciplinary record and do not meet the legal definition of a “child-at-risk;” and Have written approval from your parent or guardian.

Counselors at your high school and the technical college will work with you and your parent(s) or guardian to provide forms and help you participate in Youth Options. Notify your high school district that you seek enrollment for fall by March 1; for spring, notify the school district by October 1. Get more information on Youth Options at wistechcolleges.org. Your high school may allow you to take courses from various career clusters to prepare you for enrollment in technical college programs. This includes two years of high school courses and often allows students to earn college credit while still in high school. With the increased focus on clusters, pathways and programs of study, the 2+2 option also helps students complete their Academic Career Plan. There are some formal written articulation agreements that link a high school to both technical and four-year colleges. These are called “2+2+2” agreements. For example, at Algoma High School, a student interested in childcare could begin taking technical college courses at the high school. The student may then enroll in the Early Childhood associate degree program at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC) and apply those credits directly to similar programs at UW-Green Bay or UW-Oshkosh.
