It seems like the New Year’s resolutions for 2023 were just written down, and here we are repeating the process for 2024! As usual, there is the phrase “where did the time go?” echoing everywhere. After 75 years, I still don’t have a clue!!! I do know that at 15, I was amazed that it took so long, and from 50 on, each year felt like I was on a pair of snow skis on the fastest slope in the world, screaming down the slope. By the way, the screaming was me since I have no idea how to ski. Personally, I have a tendency to remember any challenges that took place and purpose in my mind to not repeat them. I then focus on the “good stuff” and being thankful for it. I pray that the upcoming year will produce a lot more of the “good stuff” and fewer challenges. I spend a lot more time focusing on the “good stuff”; large and small; I want to start 2024 on a positive, upbeat note. 2023 provided our family with a phenomenal “good stuff” event, and his name is Walker Guzman, born August 24th. For those of you who have ever called or emailed our office, you’ve probably dealt with Nikki. She is the cog that makes everything work. She has a perpetual smile on her face and a kind word for everyone. Based on the last 4 months, she has produced a mini-me boy. Everyone in the office just sits around waiting to see Walker’s charismatic smile and hear his infectious giggle. 2024 is going to be phenomenal! We pray that everyone in the area that we serve will have a year of happiness, peace, and prosperity! 3 John 2

Sweet Evelyn’s bakery brings charm and irresistible flavor to downtown Perry making the community sweeter one cookie at a time.
A local bakery enhances the character of any town. Sweet Evelyn’s bakery brings charm and irresistible flavor to downtown Perry making the community sweeter one cookie at a time. Owner Cory Jones is the master behind their delectable baked goods. However, becoming a professional baker and cookie artist was not always his intention. When he discovered his culinary talent, it was a surprise even to him. Growing up, he enjoyed practicing creativity in other realms. “For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been very artistic and creative,” Cory says. “But it was surprising how much of that related to confectionary art as well.” He happened upon baking rather unexpectedly. “About six years ago, the cookie craze hit Houston County when they were having cooking schools,” he remembers. Because the classes were so popular,

tickets were hard to come by. However, Cory managed to secure tickets that changed his life. “I gifted my mom tickets for me and her to go to that cookie class, and I am the one that got hooked.” At the class, Cory learned the baking process stepby-step. He enjoyed the hands-on experience and the creativity it encouraged. When he went home that night, he decided to take his interest further. Cory began taking custom cookie orders from family and friends that he would bake and decorate at home. Overtime, his following grew and he launched his business, Sweet Evelyn’s. When it came to officially creating the baking business, Cory knew exactly what he wanted to do. He shares that he was extremely close to his Nana on his mother’s side who passed away in 2014. “I knew as soon as I started baking that if I ever did a business that it would be named after her,” he says easily.

Honoring her in this way was entirely natural. He describes his Nana as a tender, sweet woman who brought comfort to his family, and he hopes his baked goods will bring the same to you and yours. Next, he created various social media accounts to promote Sweet Evelyn’s. Cory obtained a commercial kitchen in his hometown of Unadilla where he ran the business for the first few years. He conducts his baking at that commercial kitchen to this day. Before long, Cory’s baking achievements gained national media recognition. The Food Network reached out to him and cast him on the Christmas Cookie Challenge show in 2022. At the time, the show was filmed in Knoxville, Tennessee. While the competition was grueling, Cory enjoyed the challenge and the opportunity it afforded him to showcase his ability to perform well under pressure. This experience got his foot in the door of televised competitions. “I also served as the onsite alternate for Halloween Cookie Challenge out in L.A.,” he says.
The entire team at Sweet Evelyn’s is welcoming and friendly. Cory personally bakes and decorates all the treats, but his team creates a relaxing atmosphere that invites their customers to feel right at home. He mentions that his mom also helps out which he is very thankful for.

For this, Cory was on standby in case any unforeseen events, such as travel changes or falling ill, required a contestant to drop out. While he did not compete in that show, he enjoyed being available in case they needed him. In 2023, Cory was invited to compete in the fifth season of Holiday Wars. The structure of this show differs from the Christmas Cookie Challenge as it involves more teamwork. Cory explains the setup of the show saying there are nine teams of three with each team member showcasing a specified expertise. “In the past, [there was] a cake artist, sugar artist, and a general baker. This season the general baker has been replaced with a cookie artist, and that’s

where I come in.” Cory moved to Utah for the temporary filming of this competition. He describes the experience as exhilarating. When asked if he ever anticipated partaking in these televised baking competitions, he replies, “Never.” But while it was not something he actively pursued, he would not change the experience for anything. “The biggest thing that I always tell people is I am not done with TV. I aspire to one day hopefully judge these competitions that I’m competing in now.” In addition to Sweet Evelyn’s, Cory owned Jones and Company where he offered home décor and gifts. As his baking business continued to grow, he decided to merge the two by adding the bakery and rebranding
When it came to officially creating the baking business, Cory knew exactly what he wanted to do. the entire store to Sweet Evelyn’s. The boutique styled store does well along with the bakery. On opening day in June of 2023, Sweet Evelyn’s sold out by 2pm. “We sell out pretty much every day,” Cory says. “We try to keep it as a sell-out type of run – once we’re sold out, we’re out.” Cory equates his experience of becoming a business owner to growing up. “There was a time when I was not as dedicated to my business,” he says of the early years. “Everyone still wants to have their fun, but sometimes you just have to put all that aside and just focus.” His current commitment to the brand is paying off. The community celebrates Cory’s accomplishments with every treat they buy from Sweet Evelyn’s. He speaks with gratitude for the comradery of business owners and customers alike. “We have a lot of repeat customers,” Cory says fondly. “Changing the menu as frequently as we do brings in those repeat customers because we don’t have the same things every single day.” Customers enjoy the variety at Sweet Evelyn’s as every day brings a new surprise. Community involvement holds a special place in Cory’s heart. He serves as the chairman of the Main Street Advisory Board’s Promotions Committee which exists to promote events in the downtown corridor. He has held that position for a few years and is glad to participate in this way. While he enjoys serving the community in this way, Cory stresses that he does not seek recognition for

his volunteered time. “I never say that doing volunteer work with the community helps my business, because that’s not what it’s about. If I were to close my business tomorrow, I would still volunteer on these committees.” It is incredibly gratifying offering your time and ideas to help a thriving community continue to blossom. “Perry has been listed as one of the top places to live in Georgia,” Cory shares. “Being a part of that feels good.”

Cory enjoys inspiring the youth by speaking to middle school and high school students in the local area. “I tell them it doesn’t matter where you grow up or where you come from, as long as you know where you’re going.” He hopes to lead by example as someone who has worked hard to pursue his goals and been successful. Cheryl Bush‘s story is a great reminder that continuing, or returning to, our passions, hobbies, and dreams is integral to being human.

Commitment, tradition, passion, love of family, appreciation of nature – these values are so evident in a conversation with artist Cheryl Bush of Byron. She has a spark about her that, unfortunately, too many of us leave behind with our youth. How many of us grew up, got busy with life, and forgot about the simple pleasures that we once enjoyed so much? Cheryl’s story is a great reminder that continuing, or returning to, our passions, hobbies, and dreams is integral to being human. It’s also a great way to leave a lasting legacy. Cheryl was raised in Massachusetts, and her family later moved to Maine, where her relatives still work as lumberjacks in the wilderness. She grew up hiking and camping, a love of nature instilled from the time she was young. Cheryl moved here to her husband’s hometown of Warner Robins in 1982, and, though the landscape of middle Georgia looks vastly different from that of the Northeast, she finds beauty and joy in nature here all the same. Cheryl has been creating art since she was a child. She found her lifelong love of botanical painting when she was in college, influenced Hometown Living At Its Best

by her love of the outdoors. Her paintings are mixed media, a combination of graphite, colored pencil, and watercolor all in one. With this combination, “I control the texture as well as result,” she explains. As a young adult, Cheryl’s work garnered attention and awards from the New York Society of Illustrators, Boston Society of Illustrators, and more. Early in her professional life, Cheryl created puzzle and game artwork for well known children’s brands including My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake. She also worked for Hallmark in greeting card design. On her time creating art for corporate companies, Cheryl notes that companies like Warren Puzzle, now Hasbro, and Hallmark own the rights to that artwork, but that you can still find her work online through sites like Ebay. “They’re called vintage now,” she explains with a giggle.

After moving to Warner Robins, Cheryl took on commissioned work. She did paintings for Sears Cleaners, which you’ll be familiar with if you’ve been in the area a while. Cheryl took a break from selling her art, during which time she worked as an Assistant Manager at Hobby Lobby locations in Warner Robins and Macon. After more than a decade, she took the leap back to painting commissioned pieces, and she went on to paint many local businesses and landmarks, including E.L. Greenway Welcome Center. You may be familiar with some other local landmarks she’s painted, including the White Diamond Grill and old truck off of Highway 96. If you’re not familiar, the truck sits off of the highway, its location unchanged for over half a century, kept by the widow of its owner where it was parked a final time. Cheryl approached the widow of the former
Today, Cheryl’s love for botanical art is as strong as ever, but painting isn’t her only form of nature-related art. Her love of nature has developed to include a love of gardening, a hobby she enjoys sharing with her husband. “My garden is my pallet,” she says.

truck owner for permission to paint it, and she gladly allowed it. As a thanks, Cheryl gifted the owner a print of the finished work. Another beautiful piece that may look familiar, though it’s not exactly local to Middle Georgia, is a painting of The Hogan Bridge on the 12th Hole at Augusta National Golf Club. You’ll notice that there is a uniformity to the color and structure across Cheryl’s body of work. She describes her style as having an architectural feel, and she uses a color palette designed by the late Lee Wettstein, another local watercolor artist. In all of her paintings, Cheryl is guided by the motto, ‘Painting with a Purpose.’ She says, “Each one of them had a reason. The truck was to actually do a print for the elderly women.” At the time she painted it, Cheryl didn’t actually realize the truck

was a well known landmark, she simply wanted to give the owner a painting of the truck that she could have in her home. “I feel my purpose in life is that my creativity inspires,” Cheryl says. One thing that is certainly inspiring is the artistic tradition Cheryl has carried on from older generations of her family. As a child, Cheryl was inspired by her maternal great uncles Benedict and Andrea Cipollini, Ecclesiastic artists in Boston by way of Carrara, Italy. Their paintings and sculptures were recently given to Brandeis University in Massachusetts after being housed in Cheryl’s mother’s home for over a century, and they will hopefully be on display in a museum when a complete catalog is done. Cheryl recalls sitting for a sculpture by her great

uncle Benedict Cippollini as a child. “He always gave me tips about drawing and painting, and he was definitely one of my biggest inspirations,” she says. The family tradition is alive and well. A mother to four and now grandmother to ten, Cheryl’s priorities have shifted. These days, she spends her time passing on her love of art to her grandchildren. They often paint with her, and she enjoys painting with her grandchildren as subjects, a full circle from sitting as a subject for her great uncle’s sculptures. Cheryl says her paintings and sketches of her grandchildren are her most cherished works of her life. Today, Cheryl’s love for botanical art is as strong as ever, but painting isn’t her only form of nature-related art. Her love of nature has developed to include a love of gardening, a hobby she enjoys sharing with her husband. “My garden is my pallet,” she says. Cheryl’s artistic endeavors and accomplishments through the years are quite impressive, but even more so is her dedication and determination to follow her passions as they develop through life. If her life’s purpose is to inspire, she’s certainly succeeded. HCL

SERVING UP happiness Houston County nonprofit agency helps meet the needs of special population and community
F
For 67 years, Houston County Association for Exceptional Citizens, Inc., (HCAEC) has helped adults with special needs in Houston and surrounding counties. Reflective of the job it’s done, the facility is known as Happy Hour Service Center. Unlike other establishments touting an hour or two replete with merriment, the happy vibes are prevalent throughout the day. Located in Warner Robins, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency serves 142 adults who have an IQ of 70 or less and are 18 years old and up. They range in age from 23 to 74. Thirtythree of the individuals live in Happy Hour’s residential program. HCAEC, Inc., was organized in 1956 to

help special needs youngsters. The first class, featuring seven youngsters, was held the following year at Second Baptist Church. Supported by the Warner Robins Jaycees and the city of Warner Robins, the agency grew and now boasts a number of vocational training centers, six group homes and one semi independent apartment complex. It provides services based on individual preferences and needs and training in life, social and work skills for developmentally disabled individuals in a safe and caring environment that will allow them to function in the community. The jobs are varied and have included sorting and de-numbering tools, cleaning and packing respirators, assembling

Befitting its name, Happy Hour Service Center puts a smile on the face of April Bragg, president of the Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce. Its contributions to the community are immeasurable.“The Happy Hour Service Center transforms the lives of exceptional citizens with disabilities in Houston County,” Bragg said. “Through their extensive programs, individuals are able to learn key competencies that enable them to become more self-sufficient and confident in their own abilities. The center has become a vital resource for the community, offering a wide range of services including vocational training, education, occupational therapy, and much more. Their positive impact is undeniable, as they help individuals reach their full potential and contribute to society in meaningful ways.”

hospital kits at Houston Medical Center and running an extensive recycling program. Along with offering various programs designed to enhance the lives of its participants, the nonprofit agency strives to provide current information and ideas on state behavioral health and developmental disability programs and policies. Bruce Hullett, community relations coordinator for the center said they receive frequent referrals for prospective clients. Many receive waivers through Medicare and Medicaid that cover most of their expenses. Others are funded through private payments. Hullett said they receive some reimbursement from the state and rely on grants and a lot of donations, the largest coming from the annual May golf tournament at Southern Landings Golf Club in Warner Robins. The main goal of the center, according to Hullett, is to provide

training for specific goal sets and find employment for the participants. The jobs include packaging, sorting and pick and pack. Hullett noted there are in-house jobs for individuals not suited for work in the community. In the nearly four years Hullett has served in his position, some 20 to 25 people have been placed in jobs through Happy Hour Service Center. One of these is Crystal, a member of the baking team at Nothing Bundt Cakes in Warner Robins. Manager/Operator Aynslee Montgomery said Crystal is a wonderful, one-of-kind employee who jumped on board strong when she started working at the cake shop in February 2023. “Crystal loves to engage with other team members while she is at work and always tries to make genuine

The catchy name originated many years ago. Zoe Ann attended a workshop and told her mother how much she enjoyed going to work there, stating it was the happiest hour of her day. The center had a new name. One thing that hasn’t changed is the presence of Zoe Ann, who is still working and smiling at Happy Hour, her legacy secure.
Being more involved in the community, Happy Hour Participants are able to show they can be productive members of society who should be recognized for their many positive contributions rather than their limitations. “By promoting the inclusion of developmentally disabled individuals,” Bowen said, “Happy Hour fosters a more inclusive and accepting community. They work hard to reduce stigma and discrimination, creating a more welcoming environment for all residents.”

connections with her team,” Montgomery said. “Crystal has one of the toughest and time-consuming jobs here at Nothing Bundt Cakes. She gets to work with our baking team and makes sure they have everything they need to bake our delicious cakes each day.” Montgomery added that Crystal always has the spirit of a champion, keeps them laughing, and truly has a servant’s heart. She remains a valuable member. “We enjoy having Crystal on our team and appreciate everything she does for us here at Nothing Bundt Cakes,” she said. Another participant from Happy Hour Service Center is Martha, who has worked at The Base Restaurant at Robins Air Force Base for more than 14 years. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and snacks to some 2,000 civilian workers on a daily basis. As a food service worker, Martha, whose day starts at 4 a.m., preps and packages food in the upstairs production kitchen for the first part of her shift. She then goes to the deli and makes sandwiches. “Martha is extremely dependable and very helpful,” said manager Jenneymae Hawkins. “Whenever we ask her to do something new, she’ll jump in with two feet. Some people will need to know why they have to do something. Even if Martha doesn’t know, she’ll try it.” Hawkins noted that Martha never misses work or uses her sick leave. She also gets along with staff and

customers. “Martha does a wonderful job,” says Hawkins. “She’s great.” According to Hullett, Happy Hour Service Center is the best kept secret in Houston County. He said a lot of people either don’t know anything about it or exactly what they do. As a promotional and marketing tool, Hullett wears a jacket featuring the name of the center and its phone number. “I’m here to tell its story,” Hullett said. “We want to show there’s hope, another option. It’s all about providing resources so the people who come here feel as independent as possible.” Hullett worked in staffing and recruiting in Virginia and Georgia for 23 years before moving with his family to Warner Robins in 1996. He worked in staffing before taking his current job in
2020 and employing his previous work experience in a new and satisfying way. “I like interacting with our folks on campus,” Hullett said. “They’re a special group of people. I’m trying to get away from the term developmentally disabled. They have abilities.” Hullett is also a certified Special Olympics coach who takes members of the center to the annual event to compete in bowling, volleyball, basketball skills and bocce ball and prove they can achieve positive results in play as well as work. “I’m trying to make a difference in the lives of people who are less fortunate,” Hullett said. “Given the opportunity and resources, they can produce and be very productive individuals and be involved in the community.”
Just as the participants benefit from the center, so too does the community. Tiffany J. Bowen, manager of the city’s Keep Warner Robins Beautiful department, said Happy Hour’s mission and activities have a significant and positive impact on the local community, particularly for developmentally disabled individuals and their families. One of the main ways it gives back is through its recycling program.

“This community does not have a streamlined recycling business in place,” Bowen said. “Happy Hour fills that void in a big way by providing a collection center for cardboard, papers, glass, aluminum and electronics. This service provides a lasting impact by keeping tens of thousands of pounds of recyclables out of the landfill each year.” Bowen said the organization’s impact on the community doesn’t stop there. It trains individuals in life, social and work skills, she noted, helping them

become more self-sufficient, confident, and capable of functioning in the community. “These individuals lead fulfilling lives where they contribute to the community in the best of ways,” Bowen said. “They become more active participants in community activities, volunteer opportunities and social events, contributing to a stronger and more connected local community.” Being more involved in the community, Happy Hour Participants are able to show they can be productive members of society who should be recognized for their many positive contributions rather than their limitations. “By promoting the inclusion of developmentally disabled individuals,” Bowen said, “Happy Hour fosters a more inclusive and accepting community. They work hard to reduce stigma and discrimination, creating a more welcoming environment for all residents.” Befitting its name, Happy Hour Service Center
puts a smile on the face of April Bragg, president of the Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce. Their positive impact is undeniable, as they help individuals reach their full potential and contribute to society in meaningful ways.” Bragg added that, in addition to its onsite offerings, the center partners with local businesses to place their individuals in paid positions. She said this invaluable experience provides meaningful employment and a sense of purpose for the individual as an incredible value-add for the business and other employees. Bragg pointed out the partnerships don’t stop there. “Happy Hour’s leadership embraces collaboration opportunities hosting fundraisers with local businesses and supporting chamber initiatives and other area nonprofits,” Bragg said. “Happy Hour is truly exceptional!” The catchy name originated many years ago. Hullett said donations are welcome and encourages people to contact him to tour the 32–acre campus at bhullett@hcaec.com. For further information on HCAEC, go to Happy Hour Service Center.com. HCL
Along with offering various programs designed to enhance the lives of its participants, the nonprofit agency strives to provide current information and ideas on state behavioral health and developmental disability programs and policies.

As the saying goes, “You don’t know how bad you truly feel until you feel good.” The U.S. is one of the wealthiest nations in the world, but we are far from being the healthiest. Although life expectancy rates in this country have improved over time, Americans are living shorter lives and experiencing more illnesses than people in other first world countries. No need to worry, though. Ageless Athletes RX, (formerly All About Health) a wellness optimization clinic, offers a variety of services to clients aged 18 to 80 that can help improve overall wellness and health. They specialize in Testosterone Replacement for men and hormone optimization for women as well as medical weight loss, IV Therapy, vitamin shot therapy, in-house labs, and peptide therapy. Now under new ownership, Ageless Athletes RX offers Testosterone replacement for men and women in the injectable form and through Bio-identical hormone pellets; they are a certified provider of BioTe. Low testosterone levels can cause many symptoms such as low energy/motivation, irritability, loss of muscle mass, weight gain, and low libido (just to name a few) in men and women alike. Testosterone can help alleviate these symptoms and increase bone density, muscle mass, and insulin sensitivity. The clinic aims to get clients in the optimal range to help improve these symptoms. “Our primary goal is to optimize your hormone levels so that you can become a better version of yourself and improve health”, explains Southerly Stickler, co-owner of the business as well as one of its nurses. IV therapy options range from boosting immunity to
increasing energy, aiding in recovery, and boosting hair, skin, and nail health. Oral supplements first pass through the digestive system, where only 20- 30% of the ingredients are absorbed. “IV treatments are administered directly into the bloodstream, the body receives the full dose and benefits more efficiently,” explains Southerly. Vitamin Shots offered include B12, D3, glutathione, and ultraburn, just to name a few. Ageless Athletes RX is under the supervision of Medical Director John Sapp, M.D, who is active in the clinic as well as a Nurse Practitioner who helps to provide individualize care. Other medical staff include several nurses and a certified medical assistant. “We really love helping to make a difference in our clients’ overall health and wellness,” says Southerly. Starting in early 2024, Ageless Athletes RX will be taking it up a notch and delivering a list of additional services that include a mild hyperbaric chamber, red light therapy bed, infrared sauna, cold plunge therapy, Hydrafacial, microneedling, and Botox.

“Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce Today” is the mission of Georgia’s College and Career Academies.
C
Career Academies were developed nearly 40 years ago with the goal of helping to create better pathways from high school to the workplace. Since that time, thousands of high schools across the country have followed suit, offering their students a rigorous curriculum that is rooted in career-related programs. This approach has helped to reduce the high school drop-out rate while preparing students for careers that suit their abilities and interests. “Preparing Tomorrow’s Workforce Today” is the mission of Georgia’s College and Career Academies. Students are learning in environments that give them the skills to compete, and with 80 percent of jobs requiring some sort of post-secondary education, the College and Career Academies are working to fulfill that challenge. They are also bringing relevance to a high school student’s education and preparing them for college as well as their career. Operating as a College and Career Academy, the

course offerings are structured around such career and technical paths as health sciences, public safety, teaching as a profession, cosmetology, engineering and more. The students follow a curriculum that includes lecture and lab experiences as well as participation in Work-based Learning and Youth Apprenticeship opportunities. This specialized approach to learning allows the students to follow a curriculum based on their own passions and career goals. Like other career academies, the Houston College and Career Academy (HCCA) is an extension of the programs within the high schools in Houston County, offering career pathway programs in 19 different areas, ranging from culinary arts to welding and soon-to-be offered cybersecurity. There are currently around 850 students enrolled, and HCCA partners with local businesses and industries to provide internships and employment opportunities for students while in high school and upon graduation.

“The quality of the Houston County School District is critical to the strength of our local economy,” says Gheesling. “Dr. Scott and his senior leadership team do an outstanding job of consistently communicating both the successes of the system as well as its challenges to local officials, the business community, and to our citizens.”

In order for a student to attend, they must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. Students in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades are enrolled in either Central Georgia Technical College or Middle Georgia State University as dual enrollment students. Dr. Sherry Johnson, Principal and CEO of HCCA, says, “Our school opened in 2009, and it is structured around a charter school model. Our role has always been to provide project-based instruction which includes a seamless blending of academic courses with career and technical education. We are definitely not like the old vocationaltechnical schools from years ago.” Students are able to earn certifications and technical certificates upon completion of the programs. Dr. Johnson believes the community is integral to the programs by offering learning opportunities for students in their specific industry or business. Thus, the more community involvement, the more students are able to learn from real-life situations. Sandi Couillard, Youth Apprenticeship Coordinator for Houston County, works closely with local business leaders to ensure HCCA graduates succeed. “We have great leadership as well as teachers who are energetic, so there is huge potential for continued success at HCCA. I love working here because I see the success on a daily basis. Our graduates have the employability skills to enter the workforce, so the community really benefits from what we do.” “We were one of the first academies to come online in the state, and we have always been recognized as one of the most progressive among its peer institutions,” explains Angie Gheesling, Executive Director, Development Authority of Houston County. “The state of Georgia recognized the school as a ‘Career Academy of the Year’ in 2015, followed by the previous HCCA CEO
and Principal, Sabrina Phelps, being selected as the ‘Georgia Administrator of the Year.’ The school has also consistently held the distinction of boasting one of the largest enrollments in the state. “I believe one of the keys to growth has been the interaction with key businesses in the community. By listening to the needs of local industry and encouraging their representatives to give of their time, we have seen the student’s interest in programs and participation in high demand career pathways rise.” Senior Seana Winfield was excited to learn that she could take the healthcare courses offered at HCCA. “I love being able to pursue my career at HCCA, and I’ve learned about such interesting and useful skills, from administering CPR to checking vital signs. I’ve also been allowed to work at Houston Healthcare for the past two years, giving me the chance to practically apply what I’ve learned.”
Whether students plan to work in computer science or food service, HCCA provides a wide variety of opportunities. Jaiah Spight, who graduated in 2020 as a pathway completer in Culinary Arts, says, “When I first enrolled, HCCA exceeded all my expectations. “

“The HCCA students who have completed programs and certifications at HCCA are in high demand,” continues Gheesling. “When (local) industries participate in the development of programming, we see the greatest success and benefit to both the companies and our students.” One great example would be the collaboration between Frito Lay and HCCA, which resulted in the completion of the Industrial Maintenance Lab, the first of its kind in the state of Georgia. This program remains a model being used by other systems statewide to enhance their workforce development efforts. Recently, the school district played an integral role in the

Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mark Scott, and HCCA joined the Houston County Commission and the Development Authority to bring an award-winning, modern software factory to life. A classroom and lab were included in the footprint, presenting the opportunity for high school students in Houston County to learn alongside the best and brightest workforce in the country. Each year, twenty-five HCCA students are dually enrolled at Middle Georgia State University in a new pathway which was developed in concert with input from Robins and other industry. This program ensures that the workforce pipeline continues to flourish. Following the success of this co-location, RAFB offered 27 graduating seniors the chance to intern during the summer at Project Synergy. This was the first time in over a decade that this opportunity had been offered to high school students. In the fall of 1983, Mary Ann Branch, now Mary Ann Branch Coskery, returned home from Troy University. Upon her return to Warner Robins, she found her younger sister and friends in high school to be struggling to find direction and in need of structure. Thriving as a member of Alpha Delta Pi, Mary Ann knew the positive impact Greek life can have on college students. She thought it could be the same for her sister and other high school students. Kim Branch Adkison, Shannon Bianco Byrd, Katherine Moody Bohler, and Kellie Coxsey Cox agreed and became the Founding Sisters. And thus, Kappa Alpha Zeta was born. Initially, membership was only open to students at Warner Robins High School. Over the years, membership eligibility has expanded to all Middle Georgia high schools and local homeschool or online students, with new members being added each year. KAZ also is proud to have high school guys as honorary big brothers. The recruitment process, also
known as rush, begins with an informational meeting for prospective members and their parents, where attendees learn about KAZ membership from members and hear from founder Mary Ann and Head Advisor Jamie Green Floyd. While the idea of participating in sorority rush may sound daunting, prospective KAZ members will find the process to be upbeat and encouraging. The rush process begins with a casual interview with active members. Interviews are followed by several themed parties with sisters and prospective members dressing on theme. This year’s overarching theme was ‘Iconic KAZ’ in celebration of the 40th anniversary. Each night’s theme was something iconic in culture, with parties based on Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Disney, and more and included fun get to know you activities. Similarly to collegiate sororities, the KAZ rush process concludes each year with a more formal Pref – short for Preference – Party. During this party, senior members give speeches and share KAZ’s history. At

the end of the night, rushees are given a preference card on which to indicate whether they desire to become a member. Active members notify new members, also called pledges, by delivering a “bid” to them at their homes, a highly anticipated moment for rushees. Pledges are treated to a celebration the following evening that resembles collegiate sorority bid days you may be familiar with, tutus and glitter included. On this night, active members gather around new members, new members formally accept their invitation to join KAZ, and traditional songs are sung. Those unfamiliar with sorority membership might question the point of all the pomp and ceremony. The idea, as Mary Ann describes it, is to instill the feeling of sisterhood and belonging that KAZ was created to provide. In many additional ways, KAZ resembles the collegiate sororities it was based upon. There are weekly chapter meetings, often themed. There are standards for sisters to uphold – no drinking, smoking, vaping, or drug use allowed. Mary Ann aims for KAZ to be a safe haven for high schoolers choosing not to

engage in those sorts of activities. As she puts it, “Positive peer pressure, and being able to say, ‘I’m in KAZ; I don’t do that’ is a wonderful thing.” Alumnae have applauded the standards for keeping them accountable through the vulnerable years of high school. Another similarity to its collegiate counterparts is KAZ’s dedication to serving the community. “My parents were big community supporters and taught us to do the same,” Mary Ann remembers. She had a great experience serving with her collegiate sorority, Alpha Delta Pi at Troy University, and believed high school students would benefit from a community service based organization as well. Perhaps the most impactful yearly project is Christmas for Kids, which KAZ sisters have been involved with for 33 years. Each year, a golf tournament is held to raise money for the cause. KAZ then collaborates with the Department of Family and Children Services, or DFACS, to procure information on local families in need. KAZ members use funds from the tournament to purchase Christmas gifts for the families while alumnae gather groceries to provide the families with Christmas dinner. Mary Ann describes this as a humbling and joyous time that really inspires sisters to give. She even recalls times that sisters have discovered additional needs when giving to families and pooled their own

resources to purchase items like bedsheets. This year, the project was renamed “The Martha Ard Memorial Christmas for Kids Project” to honor the late Martha Ard, who sadly passed away from cancer in 2023. Mary Ann describes Martha as a co-founder and the matriarch of the Christmas for Kids project, where she served as the liaison between KAZ, DFACS, and the golf tournament. KAZ was devastated by her passing, and they hope to honor her legacy for years to come. In addition to Christmas for Kids, KAZ participates in small and large projects in the community throughout the year with many local charities, including Jay’s Hope and the American Cancer Society. To date, KAZ has “I have so many wonderful high school memories and lifelong friendships because of my time in KAZ. I learned so much about giving back to the community and was also exposed early to opportunities in leadership, which went on to help me professionally in my career. My favorite quote that best describes how I feel about KAZ is ‘first you’re a part of it....then it becomes a part of you!’”

Initially, membership was only open to students at Warner Robins High School. Over the years, membership eligibility has expanded to all Middle Georgia high schools and local homeschool or online students, with new members being added each year.
amounted over $2 million of in kind contributions. This is great for the community and great for the members to learn to “give of themselves and have fun doing it,” Mary Ann says. Over its 40 years of existence, the organization has become a pillar in families all throughout Middle Georgia. At this point, there are several “legacy” members, meaning they’re following in their mothers’ or older relatives’ footsteps in membership. One current member, the daughter of a former KAZ president, travels an hour each way from Barnesville for chapter meetings and events every week. Cindy and Scott Ritchie, owners of Hummingbird Hill Farms, allow KAZ to hold all of their parties,

meetings, and civic events at their wedding and event venue. All three of Mr. and Mrs. Ritchie’s children are KAZ alumnae, and the couple sees hosting KAZ as an opportunity to give back to an organization that their children benefited from. With high schools offering more involvement opportunities than ever, why does membership in KAZ still feel so special after 40 years? According to KAZ founder Mary Ann Branch Coskery, it’s because of the effort put in to create and maintain standards and practices that benefit members and provide a strong sense of belonging and sisterhood during those tough formative years of high school. A sorority is, by definition, a sisterhood of individuals with common aspirations. Sisters of KAZ are driven, charitable, and honorable. Joining together in sisterhood with like minded young women facilitates the development of lifelong bonds. Over the years, KAZ sisters have gone on to become college roommates, bridesmaids, and even sisters-in-law. This is the true meaning of sisterhood, and Mary Ann Branch Coskery has devoted her life to creating and maintaining its bonds. She is proud of what KAZ has become over 40 years, calling it her “most significant accomplishment outside of being a wife and mother.” She’s quick to say the credit is not hers to take, and that KAZ would not be successful without the wonderful members, parents, alumnae, and advisors that have passed through over the years. “I have so many wonderful high school memories and lifelong friendships because of my time in KAZ. I learned so much about giving back to the community and was also exposed
early to opportunities in leadership, which went on to help me professionally in my career. My favorite quote that best describes how I feel about KAZ is ‘first you’re a part of it....then it becomes a part of you!’ For all of these reasons and more, I choose to give back and volunteer my time with KAZ now in the role of Head Advisor, and hope I can help create memories that will last a lifetime for our members.” Head Advisor Jamie Green Floyd, 1994-1996 KAZ alumna, says. KAZ’s continued impact on its members and on Middle Georgia as a whole is evident. It’s inspirational that the chapter continues to draw some of our community’s brightest young women, and that they are currently stronger than ever with close to 200 members and pledges. This year, we celebrate 40 years of sisterhood and service with Kappa Alpha Zeta, and we wish them many wonderful years to come. HCL
In many additional ways, KAZ resembles the collegiate sororities it was based upon. There are weekly chapter meetings, often themed. There are standards for sisters to uphold – no drinking, smoking, vaping, or drug use allowed. Mary Ann aims for KAZ to be a safe haven for high schoolers choosing not to engage in those sorts of activities.

When it comes to sprucing up your house, professional interior designing could be the missing key to making you feel right at home. Kelly Gordon, owner of Massey Gordon Design, has a natural talent for designing that can transform any ordinary space into a scene worthy of a magazine cover. Kelly’s love of interior design manifested at a young age. While her interest in arts and crafts was evident from early childhood, her growing passion for design blossomed as a young teenager. “I was fourteen when I had my first real job. A local retail store asked me to come in and be the gift wrapper and help with the store display windows, and that’s when I really fell in love with it.”

Kelly also has a special place in her heart for animals. She and Adam have two golden retrievers and love to support the Canine Assistance out of Milton, Georgia. “They’re a nonprofit that trains dogs for medical assistance for people who really can’t live without a service dog,” she explains. “I try to donate and support them throughout the year.”
Using her creativity to help the store, Kelly worked through the holidays and during the school year further crafting her talent. Her excitement for creative design bubbled into those display windows showcasing her own talent in addition to the products they advertised. In those early years, Kelly describes the support and encouragement of her parents with infinite gratitude. She explains that they happily encouraged her to practice independence and explore options for her future. While on life’s journey, Kelly became interested in the medical field. She attended the University of Georgia where she studied premed freshman year. But after that year, Kelly realized she did not want a life-long career in the medical field. “I called my mom at the time,” Kelly remembers. “You just never know what your parents are going to say when you throw a 360, but she was so supportive. She said, ‘It’s going to have its challenges and will be difficult, but I’ve got faith in you.’” With her mother’s support, Kelly enrolled in the home furnishings program and then earned her design degree. In college, she interned at Plush Home on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Kelly says of the experience that it was a vastly different environment than the 88

southern life she was accustomed to at UGA, but she learned so much. “From there I graduated then I got married to my high school sweetheart,” she says of husband Adam Gordon. The couple moved to Charleston where Adam was attending dental school. During this time, Kelly says, “I worked for designer Muffie Faith at Elizabeth Stuart Design. She’s an incredible creative, and I learned so much in the six years I was there.” Reflecting on her time there, Kelly states, “That’s where I formulated my dreams for the future. It helped me realize what I wanted to do when Adam was done with school and residency – to have my own boutique and firm.” Since the early years of her design career, Kelly has drawn inspiration from her travels abroad. In her first year of marriage with Adam, Kelly’s in-laws took the couple to Italy. While
traveling, Kelly explains, “You taste the food and see the culture and the lifestyle. It really opens your eyes to how amazing this world is.” As she continues her travels, Kelly draws upon the culture and lifestyle prevalent in other countries. Her travels have carried her back to Italy on several occasions as well as to France and Spain. These trips have allowed her the opportunity to network with designers all over the world. Kelly strives to take international trips on a yearly basis. “Being able to experience life and travel is what really drives me to be a little different than the norm when it comes to my shop and business,” she says. When Adam completed his dental school and residency, they moved back home to Georgia. “We chose to live downtown Perry in the historic neighborhood because of the

walkability,” Kelly tells me. “Perry was growing in the right direction with its downtown diversity and I wanted to be a part of that as well.” The people of Perry welcomed Adam and Kelly with open arms and warm smiles. Having lived previously in San Antonio, Los Angeles, and Charleston, Kelly felt the small-town charm of Perry had a unique heartbeat that couldn’t be matched. While they moved to Perry in 2015, Kelly did not open Massey Gordon until October of 2019. She had been waiting for the perfect spot to become available before moving forward with her dream of opening her own store. Finally, she says, “This little spot opened and I jumped on it.”
At Massey Gordon, customers can walk in and get a sense of Kelly’s talents that she brings to every client. While she is happy to discuss design plans on a smaller scale for the sake of conversation, Kelly’s expertise is best utilized on full-scale projects. She often works on projects from the ground up. For these, she collaborates with architects and builders to create the perfect space for her client. In addition to new buildings, Kelly says, “I love the challenge of a remodel. I love taking an older home that needs a new kitchen or redesign and working with the builders to make that happen.” Kelly’s passion for her work seeps through conversation as naturally as

When her clients see the end result, they feel right at home in the design she has worked so hard to perfect. One of Kelly’s greatest passions aside from designing is being strongly involved in the community. Kelly serves on the Downtown Development Authority Board and the Main Street Advisory Board to help promote downtown Perry. She speaks of the growth and diversity of the town with admiration. “All of our shops really support each other,” she says. “We want our community to be vibrant and thriving and offer something for everyone.”

She sometimes matches the percentage out of her own pocket to double her efforts. She enjoys donating supplies to them as well to help their cause. In regards to design, Kelly says, “I really love what I do. Life is busy and we’re all going a thousand different directions but one of the most rewarding things is being able to create and offer items that make people feel special.” With her talents, your home is just one step away from reaching its full design potential. Dreaming Legacies
and Preserving
“If you can dream it, you can do it.” Daniel Martin has been very busy dreaming as he is the owner and partner of four businesses.

There are many famous quotes that describe Daniel Martin’s approach to life, but the one that stands out the most is by Walt Disney, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Daniel has been very busy dreaming as he is the owner and partner of four businesses. Daniel struggled as a student growing up and like many young people, had no real direction. He remembers his father saying, “Daniel, it does not matter if you become the president or a garbage man. Honor God and work hard at

whatever you do.” Daniel took these words to heart and has lived by these principles since. Daniel comes from a large family and places significant importance on his family. “I believe I have one of the best families you could ask for!” Daniel said. Family is a big part of who he is, and he gives a lot of credit to his wife, Bonnie. “Without her support and help with our two children, Benjamin and Autumn, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” The laundry list of businesses that he has acquired or partnered with starts with his acquisition of Chancy Auto, located in Kathleen, GA, in January of 2020. He

did not set out to buy an automotive shop, but after a conversation one day with the then owner, Jim Chancy, he signed on the dotted line. Jim wanted to retire and mentioned to Daniel that he would probably just close the doors to the business. “I remember telling him that too many people relied on his shop for honest diagnosis and quality work. ‘Sell it to me, and I will continue the legacy of what you started,’” Daniel said. So begins the start of being a serial business owner. The next venture was in October of 2021, and it was an opportunity to help continue another legacy

Daniel Martin’s approach to life and business is a blend of hard work, faith in Christ, strong family values, a willingness to take risks, and a deep commitment to preserving and building upon the legacies of businesses he gets involved in. with Danny Reed Construction. This acquisition hit a little closer to home as Daniel had known the owners, Danny and Sharon, since he was eight. “Danny and my father were good friends and collaborated on restoration projects before my father passed away in 2003,” Daniel said. Danny asked him if he might be interested in taking over the operations of the business and without hesitation Daniel stepped in and did not look back. The next two businesses did not evolve out of sentiment, but out of
Daniel is not immune to having some regrets along the way. “My biggest regrets have been the limits and excuses I believed in most of my life,” said Daniel. It is a common experience for many people to have regrets related to the limits and excuses they believed throughout their lives. Acknowledging these regrets and learning from them has made Daniel more resilient and has allowed him to pursue his dreams.
sheer excitement. In November 2021 Daniel had the opportunity to team up with good friends David Reese and Brad Von Oven to invest in Perry RV, located in Perry, GA. “When I found out what they were doing, I knew I wanted to be a part of what they were building.” Daniel said. After only a 10-minute conversation, he became an investor. Perry RV rents bumper pull travel trailers that can be used for housing displacement, long term rentals, short term rentals, or for a weekend vacation. Regardless of the use of the trailers, they are set up for mobile luxury living. Finally, Daniel’s most exciting venture to date is the birth of Cranshaw Farms, LLC. This historical restoration business has been in the works for many years and started in July 2023. A friend of Daniel’s, Trent Loseke, approached him one day with an opportunity to renovate a historical property that would eventually become a bed & breakfast and event facility. As you can imagine, Daniel jumped at the opportunity. “In a culture where everything is about the new, it’s nice to know we can bring back and preserve some of the past,” Daniel said. The name Crenshaw Farms transpired for the business because that was the name of the family that owned this historic 1800s property. Preservation is especially important to Daniel and his partner, so there will be more to come with this duo. Daniel embraces the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur, recognizing the potential rewards, flexibility, and the need to delegate. On the other hand, there is a certain amount of risk, long hours, and financial challenges. Daniel approaches business ownership head on and has learned a lot of lessons Hometown Living At Its Best

along the way. “You must be willing to delegate, period! I fell into the trap of thinking I had to touch everything that passed through the business,” Daniel said. The approach to creating leaders within his businesses is important to him. “You will NEVER raise leaders in your business without implementing a delegation process. I have some of the best employees and business partners a guy could ask for!” It is not always all work and no play for Daniel as he is an avid hunter and angler. “The outdoors is my escape and the mountains, camping, hiking, and sitting around a fire at night is my oasis,” Daniel said. He has found a work-life balance that works for him. Daniel has a “take the risk or lose the chance” mentality that has served him well. He is not afraid of taking calculated risks. “We are all afraid to take risks, but life is short. I have come to believe that failure is better than wondering what could have been,” Daniel said. He truly puts his heart and soul into his work. “I’m always looking for opportunities to keep good, family-owned businesses alive.” Daniel is not immune to having some regrets along the way. “My biggest regrets have been the limits and excuses I believed in most of my life,” said Daniel. It is a common 106

experience for many people to have regrets related to the limits and excuses they believed throughout their lives. Acknowledging these regrets and learning from them has made Daniel more resilient and has allowed him to pursue his dreams. Protecting one’s reputation and name is important to many people, and Daniel’s perspective highlights the significance of maintaining a positive image. “When your name enters a conversation, people will say good or bad things about you. If they are talking bad about you, make sure they are lying,” Daniel said. Daniel’s advice to ensure that people who speak negatively about you are lying underscores the importance of integrity and authenticity. Daniel has worked hard to build a trustworthy reputation, and that is what makes him stand out as a business owner. Restoring and preserving landmarks is not the only way that Daniel and his family give back to the community. He is part of a non-profit called United as One. The organization is made up of a community of churches that gives back to the community monetarily and through providing supplies and services to those in need. Part of their mission is to help others in multiplying the actions of kindness together throughout communities. the community, they decided to take the next step. “We worked out a program where we could start doing adoptions for Perry Animal Control. Some of them would stay at the animal control and then we would do adoptions at PetSmart,” Lynne recalls. Now fulling operational as an adoption center, they steamrolled ahead to help connect families with furry friends. Taking in as many animals

as they can help, they ensure the pets medical needs are met, they are properly neutered or spayed, and they are move-in ready. While they pull the majority of their rescues from animal control, Lynne says, “We have a rescue vet we work with to get them up to date, healthy, [and] get the medications they need. We house them here while we’re taking care of them, and then we have specific days and hours where we’re open for adoption.” Lynne and the staff take great care to love on the animals during this transition. Many of the animals they rescue are underfed, abandoned, and in desperate need of affection. With the right amount of tender care these animals need, they work tirelessly to nurse them back to health. Lynne discusses the tragedies of some of the animals that come through their doors. She tells the story of an abandoned nine-week-old rescue cat. The kitten, named Hippa, was covered in maggots and fleas, suffered from malnutrition, and was near death. With proper medical attention and a little TLC, the kitten regained its health. “That is what keeps us going, when we can see the good,” Lynne says. “Knowing that you’re helping an innocent animal that can’t help themselves to get healthy and get into a happy home is what our goal is.” Currently, Lynne says they have about 20 dogs and 40 cats and are expected to rehome approximately 300 animals by the end of 2023. However, those numbers are considered low for them as previous years have been twice as successful. Lynne admits that their decrease in capacity is a result of events that caused them to prepare for a shutdown. “We recently had our landlord raise our rent. We weren’t sure we were going to be able to pay it,” Lynne explains. “We are nonprofit and volunteer and we don’t
While the community’s need for animal rescue is great, Lynne says that community awareness is not where it should be. Lynne expresses her gratitude for the board members who have stepped up to help the nonprofit. One board member, Billie Carriker, had a personal reason for joining their cause. A spirited woman with lots of love to give, Billie decided to adopt a dog from FOPAS. “The reason I got him is I decided I probably need companionship,” Billie says of her shih tzu yorkie terrier mix. “He’s just been perfect. They really helped me get exactly what I wanted.” Billie explains that

continued to help them find just what their family is looking for. “Every person there is loving. They’re volunteer based and they really need community support,” Jennifer reemphasizes. She hopes the community can continue to support the nonprofit that supported her family in a terrible time of loss. While the community’s need for animal rescue is great, Lynne says that community awareness is not where it should be. She remembers being unaware of the need until events led her to look it right in the face. Her middle school aged son had to choose a nonprofit to volunteer with and through research he found the local animal control. “I had lived in town for five or six years [and] I didn’t even know that we had an animal control, that’s how hush-hush it was,” Lynne remembers. When her son volunteered at the animal shelter, Lynne was touched by the desperation of the animals she saw. “It was bad,” she says sadly. “That’s when I started volunteering with other organizations from the bottom and learned my way all the way up.” FOPAS is only operable because of the generosity of volunteers and donors. They are entirely grateful for the opportunity to provide animals in need with a second chance at happiness and will continue to connect pets to their forever homes as long as they are able. HCL

When it comes to enhancing your outdoor living space, cutting corners is not an option. At Blue Flint Designs, they are dedicated to providing customers quality outdoor entertainment to withstand the test of time. Owner Chad Hamlin talks about his business and the heart with which they serve the community. Alongside his wife Kim, they are a powerhouse of team minded go-getters who strive for excellence in all they do. With the mission to bless others through their business, they launched Blue Flint Designs in early 2021. Chad’s experience in previous years expanded over several markets. Prior to starting Blue Flint Designs, he spent almost thirty years in marketing and sales. “I came from the sporting hunt business but also the firearms and weaponry business,” he says. “I represented some really large companies and was involved with some very unique products and people.” He spent time working for a division within the Beretta Holdings. His work led him to some time on the law enforcement and military side of that before he worked for New Balance out of Boston. There, he says, “We were involved with the footwear but also the fire-retardant clothing systems for special forces and infantry.” Prior to starting Blue Flint Designs, Chad spent several years working for a major shotgun manufacturer. His line of work led him to many unique individuals and opportunities over the years. Chad was working for this shotgun manufacturer during Covid. “Like everybody else, it put you at home,” he recalls. He and Kim spent their time at their river property where Chad reveals he went back to his construction roots. He comes from a multi-generational family of carpenters. “My great-grandfather and his father were carpenters. My

grandfather from another side was a builder during my childhood. I was able to reconnect with that.” While at home, Chad spent time examining the structures and fences in his community and became dissatisfied with what he saw. The integrity of the structures did not align with the ability to withstand ten or twenty years of wear and tear. Interested in building quality outdoor entertainment, he says, “I built my own pergola system that was huge. Our friends were coming by and they were saying, ‘Wow, this is impressive!’” Encouraged by their praise, Chad built similar structures for a few friends. At this point, he decided to create a business and do what he loved full-time. With

the support of his wife Kim, they started Blue Flint Designs. As Chad considered the intricacies of this venture, he decided not to place limitations on what his business could become. “I wanted to create something that wouldn’t back me in a corner for being local or for a particular fences, homebuilding, or landscaping business.” The umbrella of work they perform under Blue Flint Designs allows them to follow the path of work wherever it leads them. In the three years they have been operational, Blue Flint Designs has expanded to include a variety of services. They have three divisions which include Blue Flint Designs, The Fence Doctor, and Blue Flint Land
Development. Under Blue Flint Designs they have the expertise to do dry wall, framing, roof systems, floor systems, and more. “Fence Doctor is my economical fence and deck division which [appeals to] more economically based families.” Through this division, Chad is able to provide sound fences and structures to a market of individuals with more cost-effective budgets. “As we’ve grown, that has been a very successful launch for us,” he says. “Most recently we have launched Blue Flint Development,” Chad says excitedly. On their land development side, they have machinery to include forestry equipment, mulching machines, and bucket trucks. “We can do everything from tree removal all the way to grading systems and site prep. It fits right into that original purpose of outdoor entertainment. We can help engineer, design, prep, and build.” With these three divisions, they offer customers an abundance of services. Within every aspect of their business, Chad says they work above and beyond to provide families with quality work. Their slogan, ‘Blue Flint Designs, Built Beyond,’ aims to show customers just how far they will go to build the best product. Hometown Living At Its Best

He comes from a multi-generational family of carpenters. “My greatgrandfather and his father were carpenters. My grandfather from another side was a builder during my childhood. I was able to reconnect with that.”
“We engineer and incorporate over what it would take,” Chad says. “I want to build it like I would build it for myself, but also I want to build it the way the homeowner sees that happening.” Kim speaks highly of Chad’s talent for carpentry. “He’s a natural visionary,” she says sweetly. “It’s been wonderful to see him create. He would do anything for his clients to be happy.” While they are committed to building quality outdoor entertainment, Chad and his crews are dedicated to the vision of the homeowner. They desire to give their customers the satisfaction of knowing that in ten years from now they can still rely on the sturdiness and stability of their decks, pergolas, fences, etc. Chad speaks of his crews with immense pride. Many of the men have acquired their skill for construction on the job, and Chad has been happy to help them cultivate their craft. “Their skill levels bound forward every day. Every week we get better and better,” he says. 132

Prior to starting Blue Flint Designs, he spent almost thirty years in marketing and sales. “I came from the sporting hunt business but also the firearms and weaponry business,” he says. “I represented some really large companies and was involved with some very unique products and people.”
On Chad’s team there is a project manager and personal manager in addition to the crews that work faithfully on every project. Every person adds to the business bringing strong work ethics and a passion for their trade. Hiring the right employees is key, and Chad reaps the benefits of bringing the right people aboard his team. “The number one thing that our customers compliment is our team, our crew,” Chad says proudly. “My guys don’t smoke, they don’t drink, they don’t cuss. I love hearing how someone loves their build,” Chad shares. But even more he adds, “I love to hear how they love my crew.” As a homeowner, it is natural to be weary of who you allow on your property. “I would want a company that I could trust,” Chad agrees. His clients rest assured that the crews working on their property are respectful of their privacy and their possessions. They are committed to leaving a place cleaner than they found it. Customers appreciate this kind consideration. “You can’t build, sell, be a doctor, or do anything without obstacles,” Chad recognizes. “We can call them mistakes but what we find out is that they’re learning lessons.” He urges his team to see how every opportunity propels them forward to be better builders, co-workers, and leaders. While he is proud of their construction capabilities, Chad values the opportunity to bless others more than anything. “The construction industry just happens to be what I got into,” he says. “What we really are is a brand striving for excellence.” In doing so, Chad recognizes the value of practicing the foundations of his faith while in this leadership position. He talks about being a good steward of faith to his kids, in his marriage, and with Blue Flint Designs. He hopes to live by example so that others will see and be inspired by His faith in the Lord and his determination to bless others through his business. In closing, Chad emphasizes, “I want the network of business owners and leaders in my community to know that I’m coming and that my vision is to strengthen incredible networks.” HCL

Unlike most mainstream pizza places, your calls are directed to a person rather than an answering service.
Since then, they have continued to see exponential growth. Demand for their delicious pizza is at an all-time high, and they are thrilled at what this means for their future. John shares his plans for several more locations to follow in the Houston County area. If their first year in business taught us anything, it is that CowPies Pizza Co. is no ordinary pizza shop. Their ingredients are fresh and their dough is made, tossed, and kneaded inhouse daily. To ensure top quality of their cuisine, John shares the extensive lengths they go to in order to create the best taste. “Everything we do is a little more labor intensive but it provides a superior product.” Their vegetables are chopped by hand, and their meat toppings are made fresh daily. To commit to keeping fresh ingredients, they do not have a freezer. As such, their wings, chicken, bacon, and pulled pork are extra rich in flavor. To further elevate the customer’s experience, they offer an eclectic menu outside of traditional pizza markets. Story By Alexa Tebben | Photos By Tinika Bennett Photography and Provided by Zach Horton
Walk By Faith, Not By Sight
Z
Zach Horton, has a powerful story of faith and resilience that led to entrepreneurship.
Zach Horton, owner of Blind Squirrel Nut Co., has a powerful story of faith and resilience that eventually led to entrepreneurship. He tapped into a niche market when he began selling organic and kosher pecans in a variety of flavors. They offer regular, chocolate covered, praline, sweet Georgia heat, and roasted and salted pecans. While customers enjoy these staple flavors, they plan to expand their variety in the months to come. Zach incorporates humor into the brand, but his story will draw on your heart strings. Having grown up in Houston County, Zach left his hometown to go to college in Alabama. A fifth generation native to Georgia, he says, “Broke my family’s heart when I made the decision to go to Auburn.” He enjoyed his time in college before moving to Atlanta for his first post-graduation job. However, before long, his health took an unexpected turn. “I began having real intense migraines, my vision would flicker in and out, and I would lose all sense of equilibrium,” he recalls. Zach lost his job in Atlanta because of these complications, so he moved home to Warner Robins to work for his dad at The Warehouse. As his health continued to deteriorate, he sought medical attention from an eye doctor. Zach learned he had papilledema, a swollen optic nerve. The

eye doctor explained that this diagnosis was outside of his scope of practice and referred Zach to a neurologist. There Zach had a CT scan, MRI, and lumbar puncture done before learning that he had an inoperable brain tumor. “The good news was the tumor was not cancerous based on its shape,” Zach says. “I had an operation to put in a shunt to control the pressure in my ventricle.” Shortly after surgery, Zach headed home to Bonaire and believed all to be well. Less than two days later, the shunt in his brain failed and the pressure began rapidly building. Zach remembers being in aggravating pain, so his parents rushed him back to the hospital to undergo another operation. However, when he woke up from surgery this time, he was blind. Zach saw many specialists following this new development. He recalls a visit to a particular specialist, saying, “He informed me that based on the damage that was done I would probably never see again. It was medically irreparable.”

About two weeks later, the second shunt failed repeating the entire process. With this, Zach ended up in the hospital once again. While in the hospital, he says, “I was in the middle of eating a hamburger one day and in the middle of that hamburger my body forgot how to do everything and shut down. I went to sleep and my body didn’t wake up for the next twenty months.” Newly blinded, Zach was launched into an extensive coma where his life hung in the balance. While he was comatose, Zach’s parents continued to seek medical treatment hoping their son would wake up. “My parents never gave up their faith,” Zach says sweetly. Over the next twenty months, he says, “Thirteen shunts

failed. They have no medical explanation for why I survived.” On Christmas day in 2014, his parent’s prayers were answered when Zach suddenly awoke from his coma. You can imagine the emotions that encompassed him. Not only had he fallen into a coma as a twenty-threeyear-old and woken up at twenty-five, he had lost all sense of independence. “After waking up,” he says, “I had to relearn everything – walk, talk, feed myself, clean myself. I had goals and plans for my life and I wasn’t ready to give up.” Zach went through the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation training to help him during this time. While the duration of his coma was appalling, the

timing of him waking up was divine. Not only was it a Christmas gift to his family, but Zach’s brother was to be married on January 10th. Though he was still immobile at this stage, Zach acted as ring bearer for the newlyweds. Through the help of his family and many medical professionals, Zach regained his independence. He attributes his progress to the dedication of neurosurgeon Dr. Joe Sam Robinson Jr. and internist Dr. Mohammad Al-Shroof. As Zach’s health improved following the coma, he went to work at Houston Healthcare in Warner Robins. However, he became aware of a unique opportunity. “I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit,” Zach tells me. “I had a friend from high school [who] owned a shelling company in Fort Valley. He realized there’s a huge need for organic and kosher pecans up in the northeast.” Intrigued by what this could mean for Houston County, Zach decided to explore this opportunity. Before long, he made a business for himself selling delicious pecans. He named his business Blind Squirrel Nut Co. with the slogan, Even A Blind Squirrel Finds A Nut Sometimes! Customers can pick up a onepound bag of any flavored nuts at The Warehouse in Warner Robins. They have also created a website where you can order online. They have shipped their pecans as far as California and Puerto Rico. Zach shares that his faith in the Lord has carried him through this entire journey. “I wouldn’t wish what I went through upon anybody, but I wouldn’t change it for the world,” he says. “Hard days come to everybody, it’s what you rely on and what you put your hope in that matter. With Jesus and hard work, I truly believe anything is still possible.”

Defying medical odds, Zach has slowly regained the ability to make out shapes and lights. He states with absolute conviction that he will one day regain his sight, whether on this side of heaven or when he meets his Maker. After his coma, Zach became involved in several bible studies where he leaned on the faith and encouragement of other believers. Then, in the Lord’s beautiful timing, he met his wife, Jessy. “Personally, to me, she’s the greatest blessing the Lord has ever given to me, and I survived a brain tumor and a coma,” he laughs. Zach’s love and adoration for Jessy naturally seeps into conversation, and the couple are ecstatic to be expecting their firstborn child in the new year. His faith is a testament to the might and power of God. Zach finds peace and comfort in the knowledge that He is a son of God, and the Lord will never forsake him. “The Lord allowed this for a reason,” he says of his struggles. “I don’t believe He caused it but He did allow it, and I believe He allowed it for my benefit.” Through his testimony, Zach inspires others to trust in the Lord. He often quotes 2 Corinthians 5:7 which says, “For we walk by faith, not sight.” Zach finds encouragement in the call to live by faith no matter your circumstances. His sunny disposition is draped in a joy that only comes from the Lord. Zach hopes to provide customers a small piece of heaven in every bite of his pecans. Pick up a bag from Blind Squirrel Nut Co. and go nuts for their flavors. HCL
As his health continued to deteriorate, he sought medical attention from an eye doctor. Zach learned he had papilledema, a swollen optic nerve. The eye doctor explained that this diagnosis was outside of his scope of practice and referred Zach to a neurologist. There Zach had a CT scan, MRI, and lumbar puncture done before learning that he had an inoperable brain tumor.
