Southern Picket Fence Company owner David Garrett reflects on his recent journey of becoming a local business owner. Back in 2020, David says, “We were looking for someone to do our personal fence and everyone that we called was [booked] 4 to 6 months out.” James Vallin, owner of Precision South Gymnastics Academy and David’s close friend, encouraged him to use this high demand for outdoor construction to his advantage. Having experienced the situation firsthand, David was inspired by this conversation to fill the need in the community. In September of 2020, he started Southern Picket Fence Company. Before this, David spent almost 20 years in the United States Air Force. “We moved here in 2006, to Warner Robins Air Force Base,” David recalls. He proudly followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather who also served in this branch. “Prior to the Air Force, I worked in construction,” David says. “I’ve always enjoyed being outside and working with my hands.” After his active duty military career, David transitioned to the Reserves and went to work in healthcare administration in Middle Georgia. However, Southern Picket Fence Company has provided him the hands-on work he has always enjoyed.

While specializing in building fences, their projects include pergolas, decks, patios, pole barns and more. “We’re really excited about being able to transform someone’s outdoor living space and make it a place where they enjoy being.” As David’s tagline goes, “Helping Middle Georgia Keep the Outside In.” His son, Cameron, was inspired by David’s passion for construction. “When we started our fence company, Cameron said, ‘Hey dad, I think I want to build as well.’” A driven and ambitious college student with a history of success in small business, Cameron started his own company named Nice Fence Company. A natural entrepreneur like his father, his business also boomed. “Cameron has really been a vital part of this business from the start,” David says. They helped each other by sharing referrals, teammates and equipment before deciding to consolidate their operations. “Cameron has a strong work ethic and is an excellent builder. I’m excited about him bringing his knowledge and energy over to Southern Picket Fence Company,” David announces. Their crew includes other hardworking, honest people who are highly skilled in their craft. “Our foreman has been building fences, decks, patios and pergolas for 15 years,” David says. “He’s a very gifted carpenter and we are blessed to have him work with us.” As a smaller company, they are agile and can book projects in one or two weeks. This also allows them to price better and pass the savings on to the home owner. Having created what they once sought themselves, they value each project and customer along the way. “I thank God for this opportunity to provide this service to our friends and neighbors,” David says humbly. “The Lord has blessed us with loyal customers who often refer their friends and family to Southern Picket.” David and Cameron thank them for supporting their local businesses by allowing Southern Picket to be a part of their outdoor adventure.

A brand new year is here! A fresh opportunity for each of us

to reflect on the multitude of things we each have be grateful for! Webster’s dictionary defines gratitude as: The quality of being thankful: readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

We live in a world where kindness and appreciation have not

always been demonstrated. We have a fresh opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those around us by remembering both. So much of this life is all about perspective; making good choices on how we choose to perceive and react to the things in front of us each day. A new year encourages us to reflect and review things we got

right and to work on the things we desire to improve on. I tend to be a big advocate of setting goals and then placing them in a visible place so they can be seen daily. At the top of my list this new year will definitely be keeping a heart full of appreciation and gratitude! Let me begin by thanking you, Houston County, for your gift of friendship to our family! You guys are the absolute best! Wishing you a wonderful and productive 2022! From our family to yours…. Blessings,

Donuts For

After all these years of milk and cookies, Santa might appreciate a Christmas donut for a change.

Ashley James, owner of Mini Dixie Donuts, launched her first children’s book Donuts for Santa on June 18th, 2021. “Christmas is such a joyous time,” she says excitedly. Like many, Ashley adores the celebrations of the most magical time of the year…it is no wonder. On a chilly winter night, who does not like to curl up by the fire with a warm blanket and a good book? This year, indulge in the festivities when you gather your children around to read Donuts for Santa. After achieving her dream of opening her own donut shop, Ashley decided to take another leap of faith when she sat down to write her first book.

“They are service providers, so unlike other traditional publishing companies, They give you all the rights to the book and you are in charge of whatever marketing campaigns you wish to try.”

“Every author has a reason they want their book published,” she says. For Ashley, publishing her story has allowed her to share her combined joy of donuts and the holidays in the form of the written word. This year, treat your children to a fresh holiday tale and let them decide which donuts they will leave out for Santa.

14

houston county living

The children’s story was inspired by Ashley’s love of donuts combined with her enthusiasm for the holiday season. “I’ve always had the idea of a children’s book,” she tells me. “And certainly a Christmas children’s book was the highlight.” Excited by the prospect of a unique holiday story, she set out to write Donuts for Santa. The story follows Allie, an eager young girl who decides to surprise Santa with donuts on Christmas Eve. The playful twist to an old holiday tradition delights each reader, big and small. Children and adults alike enjoy the sparkling tale and beautiful illustrations found in the book. Ashley says she modeled the main character after her beloved niece, Allison. “It just naturally felt right,” she says. An aunt to many, Ashley loves children and reveled in the opportunity to represent them in this story. Equally prevalent in the book is Ashley’s love of Christmas. “I am Christmas obsessed,” she says laughing. “I’m the girl that wears Christmas shirts in June.” Combining her passion for Christmas with her love of donuts, her beautiful story highlights the joys of giving during the holiday season. Writing a book is never simple, and getting it published can be even trickier. Luckily, Ashley’s strong presence in the community has allowed her to foster friendships with local business owners that are passionate about helping others. Ashley talks fondly of friends Victoria Hawkins and Jaimie Miller saying, “They own Between Friends Coffee Shop here in town. One of them is an author and one of them is a graphic designer.”

Together, the duo collaborated beyond the coffee shop and founded Southern Willow Publishing Company along with Jennifer Duffey. They embraced Ashley’s holiday tale, and her dream of becoming a published author came true. Ashley talks about the publishing process with enthusiasm for how seamlessly it went. Her friends at Southern Willow Publishing exhibited support, encouragement and kindness that made every step of the way a joyous leap towards authorship. Additionally, Ashley enjoyed the visually creative opportunities she experienced when publishing. “I had an idea of what I kind of wanted it to look like,” she says of the book’s graphics. “Victoria and I were able to collaborate and go from there.” It was

a project that was both playful and exhilarating. While Southern Willow Publishing turns manuscripts into published works, the authors are granted the full rights to advertisement. Ashley says of the company, “They are service providers, so unlike other traditional publishing companies, they give you all the rights to the book and you are in charge of whatever marketing campaigns you wish to try.” Every year, Southern Willow Publishing hosts an Indie Book Festival for authors from the Middle Georgia area. It is a wonderful opportunity for authors to gain exposure and share their treasured stories with the public. For Ashley, this is an exciting opportunity to share

her work with the customers of Mini Dixie Donuts. “I’m excited to use the donut shop as a way to promote it,” she says of Donuts for Santa. When customers enter the shop to purchase delicious mini donuts, they can easily buy a copy of Ashley’s new book. To showcase her book while anticipating the Christmas season, Ashley decided to host a festive book reveal at Mini Dixie Donuts. Thrilled by the timing of the book’s publication, Ashley says, “We wanted to do a Christmas in July book launch and share the joy of Christmas more than anything.” The community wholeheartedly embraced the children’s book and all the celebration that came along with it. Complete with Christmas-themed

While Ashley thoroughly enjoyed writing her first book, becoming an author was not always part of her plan. “I’ve always been a super avid reader,” she admits. But writing and publishing your first book can be a daunting task. Instead of giving in to the hesitations and fears all writers face early in their career, Ashley surged forward in this adventure and never looked back.

donuts and hot cocoa bombs, the unique book launch allowed customers to enjoy the holiday spirit in the middle of summer. Heavily involved in her community, Ashley uses her position as a local business owner to support and promote the work of her neighbors. “I truly just have a passion for the community,” she says sweetly. Encouraging fellow entrepreneurs in their business endeavors, Ashley finds joy in sharing other companies’ exciting news and events on her social media platforms. She has also hosted several events at Mini Dixie Donuts and is on the Board of Directors for the Robins Regional Chamber. “I love using the donut shop as a platform to give back to the community,” she says. Her efforts do not go unnoticed. Those who know Ashley appreciate the genuine care she has for other people and are inspired by the light they encounter in her presence. Her

Communication is crucial in any aspect of life. Jennifer Wenkel, owner of Impact Therapy, has built her business to help patients reach their full potential by overcoming speech challenges. “The whole reason I even started [Impact Therapy] is that I just want to do therapy differently,” Jennifer says. Prior to earning her master’s degree in SpeechLanguage Pathology, Jennifer worked at Marcus Autism Center, an outpatient pediatric center as well as nursing homes before opening her own practice. In her years of experience, Jennifer often saw speech therapy conducted as a stiff business transaction. She desired to create a welcoming atmosphere where each patient received genuine heartfelt care. “We want it to be a personal experience where you have a personal relationship with your therapist,” she says. When her military husband, Steven, deployed shortly after the birth of their daughter, Jennifer decided to take the leap. Needing to be more available for her infant, she left her full-time job and began treating patients in their homes, the library, or the park. “From there it just started booming,” she says. Jennifer leased a small office and hired her first

speech therapist, Lacy Boutwell. “I hired her to join me in 2018,” Jennifer recalls. Since then, she has added a physical therapist, three occupational therapists, and a total of ten speech therapists to her team. In 2021, they moved into a larger facility to accommodate growth with a gym for the physical and occupational therapy components. Their speech services include treatment of speech, language, cognition, feeding, swallowing, and fluency. “Everyone should get what they need based on their own personal situation,” Jennifer believes. They address a wide range of needs including developmental delays, coordination, balance, handwriting, activities of daily living, sensory, and more. In addition, Jennifer wanted all the therapists to know their value to the business. “A therapist is only able to give as much as they have available.” When one of them is going through a challenging time, the rest of the team steps up to ease their burden. Having this support from their work family enables them to give even better care to their patients. Jennifer talks about the importance of early intervention. Research shows that children who

1291 S Houston Lake Rd | Warner Robins, GA 31088 (478) 333-2999 | www.impacttherapyga.com

receive early intervention experience decreased rate of Autism. “Autism can be a wonderful thing,” she says. “There are so many wonderful qualities of children with Autism.” However, she adds, “If they can receive treatment early, their functional outcomes are so much better.” Jennifer urges parents to trust their instincts when it comes to their child’s development. While embracing your child for who they are, there are actions you can take to set them up for maximum success. “We can be a gateway from where they are to their highest potential in the future,” Jennifer says. The therapists use all the resources available to them to help your child. “We work as a team here, but we also collaborate with the pediatricians, the school system, behavioral therapists, teachers – whatever it may be.” It truly takes a village to raise a child, and these trained professionals are passionate about helping yours.

Neighbors for life

Summerhill Senior Living is a haven that exists to enhance the quality of life of each resident and visitor that walks through their doors.

Summerhill Senior Living is home to Houston County’s dearest community members. Margie Jones, a neighbor to the facility since 1963, testifies to the quality of Summerhill when she speaks about her family’s ties to the community. “When I moved here there were only two houses on the street,” Margie remembers. Across the way, Summerhill blossomed into a beautiful, lively community that quickly became a cornerstone for her family. When he was in high school, Margie’s son spent summers working at Summerhill Senior Living. Margie herself worked in their kitchen for a brief time and speaks of the work with fondness. “My mother was a resident for a long time,” she also tells me. “I would advise anybody to come to Summerhill because of the way they treated my mother.” When Margie’s obligations called her away for the occasional weekend, staff members assured her of their care

for her mother. Margie recalls that she enjoyed crochet and says, “I didn’t have to worry about her running out of thread. If she ran out they would go get it.” Staff members go above and beyond to daily ensure resident’s comfort and enjoyment. While Margie still lives across the street, she recently underwent rehabilitation at Summerhill. She speaks highly of the nurses and physical therapists that worked with her. “The staff has been wonderful,” she says. Margie attributes the swiftness of her recovery to the patience each staff member exhibits. Summerhill Senior Living is a haven that exists to enhance the quality of life of each resident and visitor that walks through their doors. Margie is thankful for the experiences her family has had with them over the years and encourages others to consider Summerhill for their needs. “It’s a great facility and we are proud to have it in our town.”

Two shakes of delicious cuisine and a scoop of outstanding customer service makes the perfect recipe for success. Megan Brent, owner of The Perfect Pear, is committed to creating excellent dining experiences for each customer, each day. With a long-standing love of food and appreciation for the service industry, Megan opened The Perfect Pear in 2008. “I had always worked in restaurants,” Megan says. Prior to becoming a business owner, Megan worked as Director of Catering for a large family restaurant in Virginia. “When I was doing that, I found my niche,” she recalls.

Inspired by that experience, Megan had dreams of starting her own catering company. When she moved to Perry with her husband, Richard, Megan decided to turn her dream into a reality. Perry embraced The Perfect Pear, and Megan’s catering company became a local success. With time, Megan saw more potential with her business and decided to expand from catering to include a restaurant. It is a decision she has never looked back on. “It’s like having company,” she says of running a restaurant. “People are always coming over to eat with you.”

If the cute name and warm staff do not charm you, the menu certainly will. “Our Perfect Pimento Cheese definitely keeps our lights on,” Megan says of one of their bestselling items. The ‘Megnificent’ Crab Dip, a play on words involving Megan’s name, remains a true crowd favorite. You can also order Grown up Mac and Cheese topped with roasted chicken or filet mignon, a Bahn Mi Sandwich with pickled vegetables, or Pecan Pie Bread Pudding.

The Perfect Pear has truly made a name for itself. “We won 100 Plates Local Love from the Georgia Department of Tourism,” Megan says proudly. It is a true honor to be recognized for outstanding cuisine. For winning, The Perfect Pear was featured in the Georgia Eats Magazine. Megan also received an official letter with a sticker attached. “I’ve never been so excited to get a sticker in the mail,” she says laughing. Apart from the amazing food, each staff member works to create an inviting, cozy atmosphere for the customers. “Probably one of my favorite things that people have said over the years is how great it feels, like they’re in someone’s home and not just a restaurant,” Megan says. She speaks of her small group of employees with appreciation for the enthusiasm and light they bring to the restaurant every day. “We’re definitely a little family for sure,” she says sweetly. “We’re too small not to know what’s going on in each other’s lives.” Through the good and the bad, they encourage, support and celebrate one another. “We’re a team. We band together to get things done.”

Richard has also stepped in when Megan needed the extra help. A music enthusiast, he is right at home running the Allman Brothers Band Museum. “He’s a plethora of knowledge when it comes to guitars,” Megan says with admiration. Among other things, Richard curates the museum and even travels to pick up guitars on loan for their exhibits. Passionate in their prospective fields, Megan and Richard themselves make The Perfect Pear. In a town as close knit as Perry, Megan finds community involvement extremely important. “I sit on the board of directors for The Perry Chamber of Commerce and The Convention and Visitor’s Bureau,” Megan says. They also have participants from The Halo Group working with them at The Perfect Pear. In addition, Megan was named The Chamber’s Business Woman of The Year a few years ago. The city of Perry has given back to Megan as well. “Perry is amazing to all of its small businesses,” she says. “We already knew that Perry was wonderful to us, but during the height of Covid-19 we could not have been supported more by the community.” Megan describes lines of cars that wrapped around the block to get a delicious to-go meal during this time. Because of the community’s support, The Perfect Pear remained open throughout the entire crisis.

While business at The Perfect Pear restaurant is good, catering demand is even better. “I’m taking the catering aspect of The Perfect Pear to Houston Lake Country Club,” Megan announces. “Their resources are much greater so it’s going to be a win-win for everyone.” The partnership will give Megan more room to grow as a mass caterer, and she could not be more excited.

35

“I’ve never been big on advertising,” Megan admits. “We’ve been so fortunate that our reputation has been great. People tell other people about us and that has worked for the last 14 years.” Their ability to maintain business solely on reputation speaks highly of the quality of their food and staff. Megan still enjoys the catering aspect of her business. “We’ve gotten to go through so many seasons [with people],” she says. After catering a couples’ wedding, Megan is often called back to cater their baby shower, birthdays and other events. “There are so many families that we’ve really gone full circle with,” she says. Through the years, The Perfect Pear is there to celebrate milestones with their customers.

Megan reflects on her years with The Perfect Pear and the creative expression it has allowed her. She says the restaurant is an extension of her and that customers get to see the real Megan when they dine at The Perfect Pear. “But it’s more than that,” she continues. “It’s the fellowship and the fact that they do pick The Perfect Pear when they can go anywhere else. That means so much to me.” Consider The Perfect Pear the next time you get hungry. Their delicious cuisine will quench your hunger, and their warm friendly smiles will have you coming back for more. An XLIF procedure is a trans lateral interbody fusion performed through a small incision. “It works great,” Dr. Kelley assures me. “It’s muscle sparing as well, since we’re able to access the spine from the patient’s side to avoid taking down lumbar muscles or bone.” Robotic surgeries are becoming more prominent in the medical community, and Dr. Kelley explains why. “We use

robotics for placing screws for our fusions,” he says. “This allows us to place our pedicle screws more accurately using smaller incisions.” In addition, they can pre-plan their screw placement prior to performing surgery in the operating room to ensure complete accuracy. They treat sciatica and radiculopathy of the cervical and lumbar spine with small incision microdiscectomies to decompress the nerves for sciatica and radiculopathy pain. Overall, when patients undergo these minimally invasive surgeries, they experience less post-operative pain, less blood loss and can often leave the surgery center the same day. At OrthoGeorgia, patient care is their top priority. Dr. Kelley says, “We’re working with anesthesiologists, therapists, nurses and staff to have an environment that is conducive to taking care of patient’s pain, expectations, rehabilitation, and making them as comfortable as possible.” Dr. Kelley services three locations in Macon, Dublin and Griffin to provide accessibility for a variety of patients in the greater central Georgia region.

and color match for their skin tone, try a bolder shade of lipstick, or learn new skin care techniques, they become more comfortable in their own skin. These products, coupled with individualized care for each customer, leaves them feeling valued, capable and gorgeous. Through 90 years of business, Denise says of Enjoy The Journey Merle Norman, “They’ve kept up with the trend. They have continued to evolve but we still sell the original Powder Base, Cleansing Cream & Miracol.” In addition, Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman has kept jobs stateside by keeping

production in America. “There is nothing that is made by Merle Norman that is not made, bottled and packaged in the USA.” Denise is celebrating four years as the Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman franchise owner. “I always wanted to have a Merle Norman,” she admits. “I was 17 when I started using Merle Norman while in high school in Nashville, Tennessee, and it was a lifelong dream.” But her journey to becoming the Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman business owner was not a fast one. After working Merle Norman as a teenager, Denise spent 10 years working in all aspects of accounting, did corporate downsizing and then became a military broker. “My husband was in the Army for 24 years,” she says of Shawn. For a time, Denise says, “We lived in Europe, and I took care of military bases in Northern Italy and part of Germany.” When they returned home, Denise continued this work for the states of Georgia and Alabama, but her heart was still with Merle Norman as she longed to become a business owner. Denise was in Warner Robins visiting her daughter, Courtney, when an opportunity presented itself. “We were shopping at the Merle Norman in Warner Robins,” Denise recalls, “and my daughter overheard the owner say she wanted to sell.” Denise made inquiries and before she knew it, she was buying her very own Merle Norman store. Denise and Shawn lived in Columbus, Georgia at

that time. When they purchased the Merle Norman on Valentine’s Day of 2018, Shawn was in school earning his masters in psychotherapy at Troy State University in Alabama. “I drove every day – well, almost every day – for the first year,” Denise recalls. The commute was not easy, but Denise and Shawn remained committed to the future they worked to build. For Denise, owning a Merle Norman studio was a dream come true. However, she has since discovered new dreams that have enhanced her original plan. As business grew, Denise decided to reach outside of cosmetics and offer her customers magnificent retail options to complete their look. Out of this idea came her boutique, Enjoy the Journey. The name of the boutique was inspired by both Denise’s mom and her own journey with Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman. “I’ve been trying to really enjoy my journey through the business,” she says. “Learning how to run a business, grow a business, reach more customers [and] love on customers.” Around this time, Melissa Hinnant of Grace and Lace women’s clothing store was on the rise in the boutique industry. Melissa’s story began in 2010 when she was five months pregnant with a baby girl. When Melissa experienced complications with the pregnancy that landed her on bedrest, she decided to spend her energy on sewing.

Hometown Living At Its Best

49

Melissa and her husband Rick sadly lost their baby girl when modern medicine could no longer delay her premature birth. Through this unbearable time, Rick and Melissa relied on the Lord’s grace to carry them through each painful day. With the sewing skills mastered during this trying time, Melissa started Grace and Lace boutique as a reminder of the Lord’s faithfulness. Inspired by Melissa’s story and the quality of her brand, Denise dreamed of adding a Grace and Lace line to her Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman store. “When they told their story my heart just went out to them and what she did,” Denise says. “I love her story but her clothes are fabulous. They are soft, they are reasonable – anybody can wear them.” However, Denise admits, “When I decided to put a Grace and Lace line in [my store], I got denied because I didn’t have any history as a business owner.” While new to the retail world, her 15 years of experience in accounting and 12 years as a corporate downsizer taught her invaluable lessons she felt qualified her for this step. 50

As a military owned and operated business, Denise offers an everyday 10% discount for military, as well as first responders, to include nurses. To further support the military, they also support Wellness Ranch in Dublin, Georgia. Denise thanks her loyal customers, many of whom return from out of state, for their continued business. Just a phone call away, they ship APO, DPO and many others. Her husband Shawn, now a Warner Robins police officer, offers his unending support now as much as he has from the start. Denise and Shawn hope to join forces soon to offer even more help for everyone.

Discouraged but still determined to sell the Grace and Lace product, Denise would not give up. “I went online and I learned all this stuff about ordering,” she says. “I texted whomever was doing her account. I said, ‘Would you please show this message to Melissa and tell her I’m trying to get a retail account?’ The next day, I was approved.” Denise stocks clothing in sizes ranging from double zero to size 18. “No matter who walks into the store, if I have it in stock I can dress anyone,” she says proudly. Under loving guidance, women feel at home when the ladies at Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman are taking care of them. Their products include Brighton Jewelry, Blowfish Shoes, Oak River Handbags & Wallets, J. Beverly Hills Hair Care, Blenders Eyewear and much more. “I want everybody and anybody to walk through that door no matter where they are in life,” Denise says. “If you need help with makeup or you need help with fashion, we want to be that person. We want to love on you and help you no matter what.” In addition, Denise joined forces with the charity Out of Darkness Middle Georgia, the anti-sex trafficking ministry of Frontline Response. They offer diverse types of donations to help women regain their independence and encourage them along their journey to freedom. As they transition from longterm treatment to living independently, the women seek to enter the job force and work toward rebuilding their lives.

Denise announces exciting news of obtaining their spa certification and building a spa into the store. Denise is grabbing opportunity by the horns with each additional service she provides for her customers. Between cosmetics, retail and spa treatment, customers can find everything they need at Enjoy The Journey, Merle Norman Spa and Boutique.

“Once they go through the process and they’re ready to start over, we help them into their next life, into the next chapter.” Denise says they do women’s makeup prior to a job interview and lend business attire to those in need. “We want to be here to support women – all women – no matter if you are homeless or drug addicted and you’ve come through programs. We want to be there to support you starting over in whatever way we can.” Admittedly, Denise says, “It’s not the vision I had originally. It’s grown into this whole different direction of women supporting women through ministry. God made it into that and I’m so happy with where it is.” Denise announces exciting news of obtaining their spa certification and building a spa into the store. Bella the Butterfly Dog 58

STORY AND PHOTOS BY JENNIFER DEMARO

“You cannot share your life with a dog…or a cat, and not know perfectly well that animals have personalities and minds and feelings.” ~Jane Goodall, Anthropologist

W

What do butterflies and dogs have in common? It may sound like an odd question, but the answer would be the Papillion dog. The Papillion breed originated in France and is known to be one of the oldest toy spaniel breeds. Papillion in French means butterfly. The distinct ears of the Papillion are what has given this breed the nickname of the “butterfly dog”. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC) this breed is a very athletic, happy, alert and friendly dog. This introduction

starts the storybook life of Bella and Emmie, the butterfly dogs. This is not just a history lesson on Papillion’s but an introduction to Vicki Smith and her two Papillion pups, Bella and Emmie, also affectionately known as her fur-babies. Vicki and her husband, Bobby Lee, live in Bolingbroke, GA, but both grew up and met in Perry, GA. They both lived on small farms in Perry and were blessed enough to run across each other’s paths and eventually marry. Vicki’s mother worked for Whipple Realty and as a schoolteacher for many years in Perry, so it is not surprising that she followed in her mother’s footsteps by becoming a realtor and sharing her love of animals and books.

60

Fast forward to today, both Vicki and her husband own a successful real estate company, Properties Plus Realty, that services all of Middle Georgia. Though Vicki stays remarkably busy, she found the time during the height of the pandemic, as many did, to follow a passion. This passion was to write a children’s book about Bella and that passion led to a second book about Emmie. Vicki has written and self-published two children’s books about these majestic little dogs. The idea for the books came from Vicki’s own frustrations of finding good stories to read to her grandkids. Though there are many children’s books out there, she found

Vicki may have a few more books up her sleeve, but also has other passions such as community work. She is the President of the Bolingbroke Community Club. it hard to find any that reached out to the younger age group that weren’t just picture books. I have only mentioned fur-babies so far, but the Smith’s have one grown daughter with children, so there are always grandkids and friends around to enjoy the antics of Bella and Emmie. Bella is now 6 years old and was given to Vicki in the way we all dream of getting a puppy, in a mystery gift box. Vicki had no idea how this little puppy with a big red bow on would change her life. It was noted early on that Bella had a great personality that would be perfect for being a therapy dog. Once certified, Bella’s journey to help others in a time of need started. A few years

later, Emmie was added to the family. Emmie was in need of a new home as the owners did not have the time to spend with her and so a family road trip was planned to go get Emmie, 100 miles away. Bella did not realize at the time that it was a road trip to pick up her new sister. Vicki would be the first to say it was worth every mile of the way to rescue this “butterfly dog” in need. Her first book that was published is called “Bella the Butterfly Dog Goes to Work” and the second, “Bella the Butterfly Dog Gets a Sister”. Vicki has shared her stories with church groups, libraries, nursing homes and at special events. The books are unique as Vicki

has added questions in the back of the books to start conversations with kids on what the stories meant to them. This is a wonderful way to get kids to talk about feelings and emotions at an early age. The books include subjects like bringing joy to others through kindness, welcoming new family members, being patient with others and so much more. In today’s world it is so important to encourage children to read and understand the importance of the printed words. There is nothing like an enjoyable book to hold and experience. Vickie brings Bella and Emmie to help with the story telling. As you can imagine, they put a smile on everyone’s face and help bring the printed words to life. “Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.” ~ Maya Angelou, American Poet Putting words to print for a children’s book is an especially important process, but just as

Vicki has had many accomplishments to include being the Monroe County Businesswoman of the Year in 2018, Citizen of the Year in 2018 and through the Middle Georgia Association of Realtors, she was awarded the Eagle Award in 2008, the Phoenix Award in 2013 and the Circle of Excellence Silver Award in 2019.

important are the illustrations that are used to tell the story. In this case, Vicki found the perfect illustrator for her Bella the Butterfly Dog books. Even before the pandemic hit, there have been virtual businesses in existence for years. Vicki went online and found a Ukrainian illustrator by the name of Myroslava Voloschuk to help bring her books to life. They not only started a business relationship, but have developed a long-distance friendship. Vicki sent Myroslava photos to use to create the illustrations and they worked back and forth to come up with the end result of these beautifully illustrated books to entertain the whole family. STORY BY ALEXA TEBBEN | PHOTOS BY TINIKA BENNETT PHOTOGRAPHY

Every so often, an unplanned project created as a playful pastime can turn into a platform of inspiration.

k

Kate Lewis, owner of The Speech Path in Perry, began a spontaneous long-term adventure when she created @ KateontheDaily on Instagram. The page began as a carefree activity for Kate that quickly developed into something much more. “I piddled around a little bit before I started really doing it with intention,” Kate tells me. About 10 years ago, Kate says she was a mom blogger who wrote funny antidotes about family and everyday life. “I’m not creative with my hands but I do like words,” she

Hometown Living At Its Best

77

says. With the shift of popular online social platforms, Kate left the blogging world and later joined Instagram. “When I first started this, I didn’t have a trajectory,” she admits. “I truly just did it because it was something fun to do.” Kate admits that she initially struggled to find her niche within the platform. “I couldn’t really find my people,” she shares. To combat this, Kate began creating the content she herself longed to see. “I post inspirational things that might make you laugh, things you might find interesting. It very much has a mid-life aspect,” she says.

78

houston county living

Kate posts things like, “Once I learned there is no age limit on making life fun, everything changed. Worries withered, days got brighter and, I swear, I’m sleeping better.” She encourages followers on things she once needed reminding. “Entering new phases of life can feel like learning to walk again,” one post says. “But ya know what? It’s fine! You’re fine! We’re fine!” Followers were quickly enamored by Kate and her candid outlook on life. Kate muses, “Some people were drawn to it early on because of that. There’s no ulterior motive, I wasn’t hired to sell

Hometown Living At Its Best

79

“You are what you think! So think happy thoughts. And instead of just thinking, KNOW you are beautiful, capable, smart and here for more than just unloading the dishwasher.”

Kate carries this perspective into every corner of her life. As a business owner, she appreciates the efforts of The Speech Path team and encourages them in the same way she encourages others. “My primary responsibility is just to maintain a great place for people to work,” she says. The energy she brings into the workplace creates a comfortable environment for them all.

anything.” Viewers can absorb Kate’s witty content without feeling targeted or pressured into buying unwanted products. With every online post, Kate considers the person on the other end of her content. While Kate herself is approaching 50, the page’s followers include a wide range of women of all ages. “If you’re insecure at 16,” Kate says, “it doesn’t feel a whole lot different than when you’re insecure at 65.” Because of this, anyone can draw inspiration from Kate’s daily encouragements.

Hometown Living At Its Best

81

In many ways, Kate’s content highlights the beauty that is found in the hardships. Whether sharing a video of her dropping raw eggs on the kitchen floor or addressing the unglamorous aspects of shopping with your spouse, she shows her followers that it is acceptable and even necessary to have these moments. “I want people to know we really are just doing the best we can,” she says.

82

houston county living

However, it is not easy to proclaim your faith knowing that once you do so, others might hold you to a higher standard. “That took courage for me to start writing about openly,” Kate admits. At first, posting about the Lord was more difficult than sharing the raw truths of motherhood. But she knew she would be doing her followers a disservice by hiding this very important part of her life.

“I have an avatar in mind when I write,” she says. “It is a female who may have school-aged children and she is just pulled in a lot of different directions and has a hard time remembering who she is.” Whether insecure about the baby weight you have not been able to lose or simply feeling like there is not enough time in the day to even brush your teeth, Kate applauds your efforts as a loving mother simply doing the best she can. Appealing to the many women out there who fit this description, Kate’s posts provide a comforting outlet to let these women know that they are not alone. From the 20-something-year-old moms whose children are starting kindergarten to the mid-life empty nesters, Kate on the Daily serves as a friendly reality check that no one is living the picture-perfect life we all post about online. Kate talks about navigating the negative effect some online consumption can have on our self-esteem. “I love to try to encourage people to do what interests them, motivates them and inspires them as opposed to keeping up with the Jones’,” she says. Determined to keep it positive and upbeat, Kate on the Daily leaves you feeling empowered for the day ahead. Kate talks about the feeling of inadequacy we all face throughout our life. Attesting that these feelings do not diminish with time, Kate says, “[Insecurity] is not something you age out of.” Knowing this, she encourages women to be confident in whom they are at every stage of life. While remaining true to her values and beliefs, Kate talks about her faith and the role it plays in her life and consequently her content. From the beginning of this project, she says, “I knew I wanted to encourage people Hometown Living At Its Best

83

and try to write semi-entertaining, but inspiring content for people to read and refer back to. But as I started writing those it was hard for me not to bring my faith into that.” When you hold your faith near to your heart, you cannot share your heart without sharing your faith. “If I’m writing about fear, well the way I combat fear is praying and scripture,” Kate says. Therefore, how could she not share her faith when trying to encourage others? However, it is not easy to proclaim your faith knowing that once you do so, others might hold you to a higher standard. “That took courage for me to start writing about openly,” Kate admits. At first, posting about the Lord was more difficult than sharing the raw truths of motherhood. But she knew she would be doing 84

While remaining true to her values and beliefs, Kate talks about her faith and the role it plays in her life and consequently her content. From the beginning of this project, she says, “I knew I wanted to encourage people and try to write semi-entertaining, but inspiring content for people to read and refer back to. her followers a disservice by hiding this very important part of her life. Kate carries this perspective into every corner of her life. As a business owner, she appreciates the efforts of The Speech Path team and encourages them in the same way she encourages others. “My primary responsibility is just to maintain a great place for people to work,” she says. The

energy she brings into the workplace creates a comfortable environment for them all. Kate plans to continue her adventures with Kate on the Daily so long as it brings people joy. As Kate says online, “You are what you think! So think happy thoughts. And instead of just thinking, KNOW you are beautiful, capable, smart and here for more than just unloading the dishwasher.” Women all over applaud Kate’s relatable content and appreciate her everyday tips and tricks. When you feel scared or alone, it is a comfort to know that someone has walked in your shoes. In the meantime, find the little joys life offers every day and know that you will not only survive, you will thrive.  HCL

Kate talks about navigating the negative effect some online consumption can have on our selfesteem. “I love to try to encourage people to do what interests them, motivates them and inspires them as opposed to keeping up with the Jones’,” she says. Determined to keep it positive and upbeat, Kate on the Daily leaves you feeling empowered for the day ahead.

and the community with a major emphasis in providing aid to those with disabilities. Each year, they sponsor individuals with special needs who wish to attend Camp Big Heart. At Camp Big Heart, their mission is “To provide the highest quality summer recreational camping experience for Georgia’s developmentally challenged children and adults.” With over 30 years of providing safe, affordable, highquality camping programs, staff and volunteers have mastered the individualized care that makes each camper feel right at home. Camp Big Heart runs for two weeks every summer. The first week includes campers ages 8-27 while the second week is for adult campers ages 28-60. The camp runs from Sunday to Friday morning in a flurry of activities, meals and events for all. Mary Coon served on the Warner Robins Civitan Club for 33 years before becoming the Camp Big Heart Treasurer. “Our Civitan Club has been sponsoring kids to go to this camp for years,” she recalls. “Being on the other side of it just opened my 98

Local Houston County residents Terry and Kitty Barfield embarked on a mission to preserve the family’s history when they restored a beloved piece of Kitty’s great-great grandmother’s house. The home, which was built in 1853, has been passed down through many generations. Kitty talks about her great-greatgrandmother, Martha Davis Tharp, and her history with the house. “She must have been used to the very finer things in life,” Kitty says of Martha. “She built the house to look like the old governor’s mansion in

Milledgeville, Georgia.” Martha built the house as a wedding gift for her son, William Allen Tharp, and his bride, Martha Feagin Tharp. It was complete with five large bedrooms, a living room, farm office, dining room, grand hall and a breezeway that led to the kitchen. Each bedroom included a walk-in closet and its own fireplace. The exterior was fixed with brick columns and railing outlining the large front porch. Prior to the Civil War, Kitty tells me, “[Martha]

decided that she would have her own business, and that’s what she did. She went around Houston County with her best craftsmen and had them building homes and businesses in Perry and around Houston County.” Kitty talks about Martha with admiration for the legacy she built. “She must have been an absolutely amazing person,” she says. A firecracker of a woman, Kitty adds, “She could be seen riding a horse checking her job sites with a pistol in her lap.” Martha and her brother owned land at Houston Lake. The difficulties of the Civil War forced them to be creative to preserve their assets. “She came up with this idea to let her craftsmen build rafts,” Kitty says. “They put their cotton on the rafts and floated them back into the little coves so the northern troops didn’t know they were there.” When the war ended, their hidden treasure was the only remaining cotton in the town. Because of her vigilance and innovation, Martha saw to it that her business, her livelihood and her family prospered through good times and bad. Desiring the best future for her family, she put each of her children and grandchildren through college. “She was way ahead of her time I believe,” Kitty says. Martha’s family respected and revered her. Long after her death, they continued to tell their children about the woman that shaped their family’s legacy. Martha Feagin Tharp left the house to her youngest son, Earnest

“We were able to save something that most people would have just let fall in and wouldn’t have given a second thought,” Kitty says. “My grandmother and great-grandmother would be so proud.” Each moment in the quaint space is a reminder of the family’s history, the joy they find each day, and the promise of a brighter future.

By rebuilding a portion of the family legacy, Terry and Kitty honored the history of their past and kept the story in motion for their family’s future. They share the gorgeous renovation with family and friends when hosting holidays, ladies’ luncheons, club meetings and other gatherings.

Feagin Tharp. Earnest and his wife, Lucia, had a daughter named Margaret who later had Kitty. It seems natural then that Kitty grew up with unwavering respect for the family house and the history it represents. Although uninhabited for years, it reminded Kitty of the family that paved the way for the generations to follow. “I’ve always loved history,” Kitty says sweetly. But this piece of history begged to be preserved. With rotting walls and termite-ridden wood, the house would not survive much longer. “I just can’t stand to see history fall in,” Kitty declares solemnly. Following her nursing career and ten years as store owner of Elegant Designs and Christmas Treasures, Kitty spent five years working for the Georgia Trust’s historical preservation. Here, Kitty’s passion for history grew in leaps and bounds. She found that she could no longer stand idle and watch history fade in the distance. Kitty’s devoted husband, Terry, also felt a pull to preserve the history. He threw himself into the project reveling in the opportunity to restore this treasure. “The kitchen was detached from the house

for fear of fire,” Kitty explains. Situated eight miles from their property, they moved the kitchen portion of the home to their land. The structure was in such bad condition Kitty reports, “The movers said you could have rolled this little building down a hill and it wouldn’t have remained intact.” Deteriorating by the minute, the building seemed like a lost cause. But Terry and Kitty believed otherwise and were determined to set things right. As the pecan farmer of Blue Jay Orchards, Terry chose a special place for this new addition on the edge of the orchard. “My husband’s a really good wood craftsman,” Kitty says. He set out replacing lumbar, whitewashing the exterior and installing new windows. “He can do electrical and plumbing and everything,” Kitty says proudly. The son of a building

inspector for the city of Warner Robins, Terry builds with a passion for accuracy and a taste for perfection. Despite the intensive labor this project required, Terry was determined to complete it himself. Kitty mentioned hiring help and tells me, “He said, ‘No. This is something that I want to do.’ He felt such a closeness to this little house.” Terry honored Kitty’s grandmother, who meant the world to them both, with every minute he spent restoring this home. Kitty talks of her time with the Georgia Trust and how it sharpened her natural decorating skills. “I did sales in the museum store,” she recalls. “I coordinated all of the rentals. We did a lot of weddings and receptions there.” Kitty put her design skills to work at these events, enhancing the space with beauty pristinely tailored to each occasion. She designed weddings, honorary receptions, a

Following the renovation, the Barfield family celebrates Christmas here every December. governor’s dinner and more. “I love to be creative. I got that from my grandmother Tharp.” Kitty brought her taste for design to the little building where she added a homely finish. After three years of hard work and constant labor, the building was completed in October 2020. “It’s my oldest living relative is what I think of this kitchen now,” Kitty says. A symbol of generational prosperity, it sits comfortably on their welcome property. With a new roof, beautiful whitewash and a scenic porch, the old building underneath is hardly recognizable. Kitty reflects on the house and the history of her ancestors that it represents. “It’s amazing how our lifestyles have changed,” she muses. With no stove, her ancestors cooked over an open fireplace. “You had to make do with what you had. It’s such a neat little building, and the history’s so rich.” Following the renovation, the Barfield family celebrates Christmas here every December. Their daughter, Kathryn, and her husband, Joel, cherish the moments they spend together at the site. “She’s an interior designer,” Kitty says of her daughter. “She said when we’re gone she will use the old kitchen as her interior design office.” It brings Terry and Kitty great joy knowing that this building will continue under the watchful care of their family. By rebuilding a portion of the family legacy, Terry and Kitty honored the history of their past and kept the story in motion for their family’s future. They share the gorgeous renovation with family and friends when hosting holidays, ladies’ luncheons, club meetings and other gatherings.  HCL

anxiously anticipating is almost here. The question is, are you prepared for the sibling squabbling, food and drink spills, umpteen rest stops, and being asked a hundred times or more, ‘are we there yet?’ With a little pre-planning, you can drastically reduce the hassles and turn your time on the road into a fun, family experience for all.

Road T r i p p in ’ with kids 7 Hacks for Fun, Stress-Free Road Travel

Hometown Living At Its Best

133

Depending on the length of your drive, it can be a challenge to keep kids amused for the duration despite all the other entertainment you bring along. Limit their screen time on the road by allowing them 30-minute cycles of screen time broken up by other activities.

1. Restroom breaks. Immediately before heading out, have everyone go to the bathroom, whether they need to or not. Just before and while on the road, limit beverages, particularly caffeinated ones, to reduce the frequency of restroom stops. When you do have to stop for something, have everyone use the restroom again, and don’t accept anyone’s claim, “I don’t need to go.”

134

To reduce messes, avoid foods that melt, smear, and squish, such as chocolate, cupcakes, and yogurt. 136

2. Reduce stops. Strategize where you choose to stop so you can cover all the bases at once. Fuel up, grab food and beverages, use the restroom, and go for a walk or play a game of tag so everyone can stretch and exercise. 3. Drive through the night. Kids typically sleep through the night on the road. So it’ll seem like they’ve reached your destination in the blink-of-an-eye, which will reduce your overall stress. Parents can switch off driving while one another sleeps.

4. Snacks and drinks. Bring along a cooler and a variety of drinks and snacks to reduce pit stops. Breaking up the time with small meals and snacks will also help keep kids pacified. When packing snacks, include some nutritious ones like carrot sticks and apples. Also, keep in mind the messiness of particular types of foods. To reduce messes, avoid foods that melt, smear, and squish, such as chocolate, cupcakes, and yogurt. 5. Plan fun or scenic stops. Do some advance research to find a fun stop along the way, and build it into your vacation. Look for a state or national park, national monument, beach, kiddie fun-land, river walk, or water park. 6. Car entertainment. Before your trip, visit the library to pick out books, audiobooks, and music CDs. But don’t let the kids have the items until you’re on the road. That way, the kids will have fresh entertainment. Also, take along some car games, and print a list of games that don’t require pieces to play. Some ideas to get you started include the license plate game. Have everyone write down the states of the license plates as they spot them. The person with the most states wins. Also, try the “Would you rather?” game. Take turns asking everyone what their choice would be between two gross or unpleasant situations. For example, would you rather be trapped in a closet that’s crawling with hundreds of centipedes or eat a worm?

Cancer & Community Coming Together One Fit, One Stitch at a Time Straight from the Heart

C

Color Me Pink is a 14-year-old business that specializes and offers services such as post mastectomy, DME, custom fit bra boutique and more. This local business offers comfort, reassurance, peace of mind, a confidence boost and much more for each client that it cares for. The best way to see the impact this beautiful and quaint local shop has on the surrounding Middle Georgia Community is to hear it straight from the heart of the clients and community members themselves. The first group that I had the pleasure to sit down and share time with was a vibrant group of women, varying in ages and life experiences, who proudly refer to themselves as the Tickled Pink Stitchers. This group gathers every Monday afternoon at the Warner Robins Shop location to volunteer their time and

love of crochet and knitting to support other local community members coping with cancer, premature births, etc. This group was formed from within the shop as it receives multiple donations of yarn, granny squares, fabrics, etc. This wonderful group of ladies comes together to turn yarn scraps, granny square patches and more into blankets, shawls, and cover-ups for cancer patients during chemo therapy sessions. These items act as a “warm hug” from each of these ladies, one of which has her own personal cancer story. These ladies say they value the

shop’s hospitality in offering them a place to gather, grow and create gifted items for the cancer community, as well as newborn babies delivered in Houston County. As I interviewed each member, each echoed the support and friendships they have built with one another in meeting each week to create gifts for others. There is no doubt that support, friendship and love comes across to the community with each hand-crafted gift that is received. As we closed out our time together, we discussed that their mission is to

Recently, after a whole lot of thinking things over and praying daily about it, Judy and her husband made the decision to retire this year. This has led to the next mission for Judy, which is to find someone who has a serving heart and is willing to carry on the legacy of love and community support that she has spent years building, one client, aka community member, at a time.

As I looked around the shop, it was clear that Judy’s mission to be such a friend is being fulfilled through the services offered within her shop. help heal hearts “one stitch at a time” and remain a close knit group (pun on words intended). Thanks for the support of Judy Mason and Color Me Pink for providing them a place to gather, grow and give back to the community. Next, I had the special opportunity to meet with some local community members who were more than happy to share the influence and impact Judy and Color Me Pink had in their lives throughout their cancer journey. Olivia Frazier says she met Judy while they both worked together at a previous company and had no idea that she would later refer to this coworker and friend as an angel from God. Olivia says there is no doubt that “God designed Judy Mason to be a

What inspires a person to choose to open up a business that undoubtedly connects with the hearts of community members and take on the task of filing and working with insurance companies too? The answer is the heart of a woman who saw a need within her local community and took upon herself to fill it. As I sat with Judy, I learned the many attributes she feels are important to fulfill the role…being a good listener, full of compassion, and above all a willingness to just be present with the clients in those extremely hard and heart-wrenching times.

Helen Byrd, a cancer survivor, says that Judy’s love for this community is extremely special and extends outside the walls of her shop too. Helen shared about the Cancer Serenity Garden off of Russell Parkway that Judy worked hard to attain because she knows that there is a lot of cancer in Middle Georgia.

part of her journey,” and she feels that when it comes to finding people like that in the community, “those people are hard to find or are few and far between because they just don’t make people like that anymore.” Olivia recalls Judy organizing a holiday dinner where everyone brought a hot dish and gathered together one Christmas to laugh together, and to share love and kindness with one another. She recalls Judy showing up with gifts for all the women and thinking what an act of kindness that was because, in reality, it was the services Judy and her shop offered that were the true gifts to all these women of different ages, cultures and races. Olivia says that Judy was always available for a prayer, an encouraging word, and to share a smile; being able to come to the shop for fittings for prosthesis, wigs, etc. was always a kind and caring experience. Judy is more than happy to pray with clients, which is extremely special in those very personal and hard moments. It was important to Judy to create a special tranquil place for others to go to meditate, pray, or just be still and alone with their thoughts. Helen says that she and her husband, who are both cancer survivors, have a special brick in the garden in honor of their fight against cancer and she has one in memory and honor of her mother, whom passed away from breast cancer. Helen shares that not only is Judy one of the nicest people she knows, having sought to open a much-needed facility for the cancer community, but to have also worked so hard to find and develop a place for cancer patients, survivors, and caretakers alike to go to refuel their souls and minds. This speaks volumes of just how far Judy’s loving reach extends throughout our community.

The times when hair loss occurs, physical appearances are altered, when looking at oneself in the mirror is extremely hard and painful before and after reconstruction surgery occurs or has failed. To be a friend in those moments isn’t easy, but Judy feels it is not only necessary, but needed and so very important to one’s ability to keep pressing on in the fight against cancer. offering services to fulfill the needs of cancer patients within this community, the shop also extends its services to other community members as well, by offering plus size bra fittings, nursing bras, breast pumps, shapewear and an assortment of gift items and jewelry. Judy sought to obtain certification through the American Board of Prosthesis and became licensed to accept and file insurance claims for clients as well. Whatever needed to be done to care for the clients is exactly what she has been doing for 14 years. The Good News Network is the umbrella organization comprised of GNN Radio, which broadcasts via satellite to 22 English speaking affiliates, and Radio Amistad, which broadcasts to six Spanish speaking affiliates. These affiliates are spread throughout Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Alabama.

How It All Began Clarence Barinowski wanted to solve a problem. As a traveling salesman for a family-owned animal feed business, he traveled over 50,000 miles a year. Spending so much time in his car made him wish he could hear some Christian broadcasting. But there was no way to make it happen over such a large territory. The startup cost to build a station was very high and the reach was limited to the coverage area for that station. We, at the Good News Network, are grateful for God’s blessings and the many new listeners who have contacted us, and we look forward to continuing with our mission to carry God’s Word over the airwaves.

But God made a way. President Ronald Reagan deregulated the radio airwaves and at the right time, satellite technology made it possible to build a much more inexpensive broadcast facility. So, in 1982, Clarence incorporated the Augusta Radio Fellowship Institute and filed for a frequency. In 1984, the permit was granted and soon, a tiny Sunday School room provided by Bethany Chapel, became a radio station. The signal was sent via microwave transmitter to a tower in Sweetwater, South Carolina, from which it was sent out to listeners for the first time in November 1984. WLPE was on air! At this point, Clarence was working full-time for ConAgra Feed Company, and so a lot of volunteer help was needed, especially for technical and engineering issues, as feeding farm animals did not lend a great deal of expertise in the radio industry. The learning curve was steep, but the very first FM Christian radio station in the area was finally broadcasting. All the sleepless nights were worth it as the dream was realized and listeners began to write and provide support for the ministry. At night, Clarence and his wife, Sylvia, would hand write receipts for gifts. But this was just the beginning.

Growth of the Network As support increased, the vision enlarged. A search for places to put more stations in communities without Christian radio saw applications in Georgia for Jesup (WLPT), Vidalia (WGPH), Byron (WPWB), and Florence (WLPG) in South Carolina. Next, a group of Christians in Morehead City, North Carolina transferred their license to GNN which provided a powerful signal to the GNN lineup of stations. Growth continued when a large gift allowed GNN to build a station in Barnwell, South Carolina (WHBJ) and Fair Bluff, North Carolina (WGHJ). Most recently, stations were built like WFAL reaching south Atlanta to Macon, and WJTB in Columbia, South Carolina, as well as WJNA in the Clemson/ Anderson/Toccoa area. The remainder of areas covered are: in Georgia… WZIQ, Albany; WWGF, Donalsonville; WTHP, Gibson; WPMA, Greensboro; WLPF, Ocilla-Tifton; WNNG, Unadilla; WSJA, York, Alabama and repeaters in

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and in Georgia… Douglas, Richmond Hill, and Blakely. Far more than was ever dreamed has been accomplished, which has been a great blessing to many people in these areas. All these stations were added without hiring any additional people! Satellites make it possible to send a signal from the main studio to all the different stations which then transmit to their respective listening areas, and all within a fraction of a second. The signal bounces from earth to space faster than a ping pong ball in a table tennis match.

Spanish Stations An opportunity to purchase WBLR in BatesburgLeesville, South Carolina allowed GNN to reach poultry workers in that area, as a large number of Spanish speaking people live and work there. Soon, more Spanish stations were added in Georgia…Soperton and Sparta, and repeaters in Lake Oconee, Lumber City, and Higgston.

Interesting Tidbits We, at the Good News Network, are grateful for God’s blessings and the many new listeners who have contacted us, and we look forward to continuing with our mission to carry God’s Word over the airwaves. We are thankful that a traveling salesman’s dream to have a local radio station has been fulfilled above and beyond, as God has blessed and multiplied this network which is now able to reach the world through the internet. Who would have ever thought that the lonely backroads of Georgia would reach so far?

The first station’s call letters were assigned as WLPE since no specific letters had been requested. One day while reading Philippians 4, Clarence was able to put some significance to the letters with the line, “Whatever is Lovely, Pure and Excellent.” The theme was continued with Lovely, Pure, True (WLPT), Good, Pure, Honest (WGPH), Lovely, Pure, Faithful (WLPF), but the pattern dropped at WPWB. HCL
