ABOUT THE FACULTY

THE FACULTY

The Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management (CLM) was constituted as part of the University of the Witwatersrand’s re-organisation process in 2001. Based in the Commerce, Law and Management building on Braamfontein Campus West, the Faculty is the second largest in the University of the Witwatersrand. It consists of six Schools, four of which offer undergraduate and postgraduate programmes while two offer postgraduate programmes exclusively. CLM offers degree programmes that compare with the very best globally, and offers professional development in business and law through short courses and executive education offerings. Our academics produce groundbreaking research supported by our postgraduate students and post-doctoral fellows.

STUDENT SUPPORT

ROAD TO SUCCESS The Road to Success Programme (RSP) is the Faculty’s student support and success programme. We provide holistic support to all undergraduate students in the faculty. The RSP aims to guide CLM students on the path to personal and academic success from registration to graduation. The RSP also provides personal, emotional, food/clothing, and funding-application related support, to ensure the unique needs of each CLM student are addressed. The continued development and effective implementation of these support structures is geared at helping students succeed from the start, and allows them to take responsibility for their own success and eventually give back to the next generation of Wits graduates.

The RSP uses an integrated network of tutorials, interactions with Success Advisors and Success Tutors, on-one-on consultations, online support, and toolkits for success, which serve to help CLM undergraduates achieve their short-, medium-, and long-term goals.

THUTHUKA

The Thuthuka Education Upliftment Fund is a well-established successful national transformation initiative. Thuthuka’s objective is to transform the demographics of the profession to reﬂect those of the country in terms of race and gender, and provide educational support to African learners and students for the benefit of the profession, while simultaneously helping to uplift communities. SAICA prides itself in leading the chartered accountancy profession as a socially responsible driver of business and skills development.

CLM POSTGRADUATE CENTRE The recently refurbished ‘Rembrandt Gallery’ (built in 1963) at Wits Campus West, has re-opened as a Postgraduate Student and Resource Centre for the Faculty’s Master’s by Research and PhD students.

The centre is access-controlled and features individual work stations for students to bring their own laptops/mobile devices, a lounge, a kitchen and WiFi connectivity. The facility is open from 5am - 10pm daily and is situated between our School of Accountancy and School of Law building 7

SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY The School of Accountancy consistently produces students who are placed in the top ten performers in the national SAICA examinations and is the leading contributor of black accountants to the South African business landscape. The Head of School, Professor Nirupa Padia is the first black female Associate Professor in Auditing.

NEW PROGRAMME The Postgraduate Diploma in Specialised Accountancy (PGDIP SA) was introduced in 2018 to produce well-rounded accountants and increase workready strategic finance professionals who have the technical and financial ability to work anywhere in the world, in any sector. READ MORE

INFORMATION SYSTEMS

HRM studies focus on people-related policies and systems. They are also concerned with change in organisations and industrial relations, such as recruitment, talent management, employee development and motivation, and compensation.

In Information Systems, we study what happens when technologies, people, organisations and societies interact. Technology now lies at the heart of a dynamic, information and knowledgedriven world that needs people to point the way, people who “get IT”.

INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT

MANAGEMENT

Insurance is how companies and individuals protect themselves against the risk of loss, and against loss itself. This may involve property, life, health, or income. Insurance is a form of risk management.

The nature of management is best illustrated in topics you will study, such as: leadership and the role of managers; managing individuals, groups and teams; and organisational development and behaviour, project and innovation management.

MARKETING Technology, travel, entertainment, services, apps and games - even your favourite musician or sports team – are all marketed. Marketing includes the creation and design of images and products (branding), advertising, demand creation and management, public relations, and digital marketing.

SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND FINANCE Steeped in the University of Witwatersrand’s tradition of scholarship and innovation, SEF faculty and students bring an exacting, data-driven perspective to the full spectrum of policy concerns. It’s this point of view that defines SEF, guiding us as we address today’s most complex challenges and nurture a new generation of leaders driven to change South Africa, Africa and and the world.

Applied Development Economics

The health sector commands a substantial share of the economy’s resources and health is an important public policy issue. Health economists, however, are in short supply. A qualification in this field offers employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

The Applied Development Programme approaches economics from a pluralist point of view. In this context, pluralism comprises three dimensions: theoretical pluralism; methodological pluralism; and dialogue between economics and other social sciences.

SCHOOL OF GOVERNANCE The Wits School of Governance (WSG) is a post-graduate institution that works towards transforming the public, private and nongovernmental sectors through education and building an Africa we all want to live in. WSG believes firmly that evolution and innovation is critical to our success as the nature of the world changes. We provide an environment which allows students to extend their knowledge of theory and practice in areas that complement their work challenges. It is important to us that our programmes have content that is aligned to global and local challenges. We educate over 1000 students and short course participants annually. SCHOOL OF LAW Established in 1922, the Oliver Schreiner School of Law has a long-established reputation as a premier centre for legal studies. Students refine their abilities to analyse and solve problems, argue from a position of weakness or strength, and work effectively under pressure. In addition to a sound theoretical education, students have the opportunity to gain hands-on, real-world legal experience through exposure to the final-year Practical Legal Studies component of the law degree, and have access to a wide range of electronic databases, IT services, as well as a three-storey library and research space located centrally in the Law School Building. We pride ourselves on teaching students the values of democracy and justice. WITS LAW CLINIC

The Wits Law Clinic aspires to be a leading and proficient university law clinic, nationally, regionally and globally recognised for its excellence in teaching, professional service, research and its innovative collaborative partnerships. The Law Clinic, one of the biggest law clinics of its kind in South Africa offers pro bono legal services to underprivileged members of the community who qualify for legal aid.

SOUTH AFRICAN RESEARCH CHAIR IN EQUALITY, LAW AND SOCIAL JUSTICE “The NRF SARChI Chair on ‘Equality, Law and Social Justice’ researches the the role of constitutions, human rights and law in achieving social and economic justice, and advancing substantive equality. The various research projects of the Chair consider how the law, as framed by constitutions, parliaments and/or courts, and as implemented and enforced by different institutions, can frame and produce different kinds of equality and inequality, justice and injustice, amongst different sectors of society.” PROFESSOR CATHI ALBERTYN CITED IN GROUND-BREAKING JUDGMENT The School of Law’s SARChI Chair, Professor Cathi Albertyn, has been cited in a ground-breaking judgment on equality for domestic workers. On Thursday 19th November 2020, the Constitutional Court handed down judgment in Mahlangu v Minister of Labour, confirming that domestic workers in private households should be included in the definition of ‘employee’ for the purpose of receiving compensation for diseases, disablement, injuries or death in the course of their employment. In making this important shift, the Court draws directly on the work of the School of Law’s SARChI Chair, Professor Cathi Albertyn, published in the South African Journal on Human Rights: The discrimination in this case illustrates what Albertyn posits as the need for the concept of equality to be developed beyond the idea of equal concern and respect. In discussing the plasticity of the concept of equality, she reminds us that— “the goal of equality . . . is to remove systemic barriers to substantive freedom and actively to create conditions of equality, including attention to restructuring relations of equality at individual, institutional and societal inequalities. It is also to take account of the intersectional nature of inequalities in comprehending the problem and identifying its solutions”. READ MORE 14

Wits Business School (WBS) is the graduate school of business administration of the University of the Witwatersrand, one of the top tertiary institutes in Africa. The School offers a variety of postgraduate academic programmes and executive education programmes as well as public seminars. WBS also designs tailor-made, in-company programmes, partnering with client organisations to develop management capacity. With a full suite of programmes on offer, WBS delivers innovative, transformative, and immersive learning experiences using generative thinking methodologies.

CHAIR OF DIGITAL BUSINESS The Telkom Chair in Digital Business at the Wits Business School is Africa’s first chair in this space. It was set up in 2016 and provides a platform where Telkom funds a black internship programme for Wits Business School students. Telkom will also offer free digital business training to its own staff. Through this Chair, Wits Business School plans to conduct research in the field of digital business in Africa, and advance awareness of digital business and digital readiness by engaging with business, government and communities.

ENERGY LEADERSHIP The African Energy Leadership Centre (ELC) is a first for South Africa and the continent. The ELC will be a hub of teaching and research aimed at addressing the issues of energy shortages in Africa as well as the skills deficit in an industry which is of vital importance to economic growth on the continent. The ELC offers both a Postgraduate Diploma and a Masters degree in Energy Leadership, as well as executive education short courses and seminars, while also engaging with historically disadvantaged research universities across Africa. 15

Evidence Map: South African interventions to prevent violence against women and children

Over the past decade, monitoring, evaluation, research and learning (MERL) practices have become increasingly digitalised, as the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the process of digitalisation. MERL Tech and CLEAR-Anglophone Africa are working together to develop a framework and guidance on responsible data management for MERL in the Anglophone African context.

CLEAR-AA (Wits), ACE at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), and the Institute of Security Studies (ISS) have conducted an evidence map of the available research on violence against women and children (VAWC) in South Africa. It aims to map empirical research and evaluations of interventions to prevent violence against women and children in South Africa.

Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) The Centre for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) is a public interest law organisation which aims to promote human rights and challenge systems of power in South Africa and the region. CALS practices with a specific focus on five intersecting programme areas:

BUSINESS & HUMAN RIGHTS The Business and Human Rights Programme works toward ensuring that corporations respect human rights and are held accountable for violations. CIVIL & POLITICAL JUSTICE The Civil & Political Justice programme advances civil and political rights, such as the right to protest, the right to freedom of expression, the rights of the arrested and detained, and the right of access to information. ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE Protecting the environment is critical for everyone, but particularly for communities living in poverty. The Environmental Justice Programme aims to counter this injustice and make environmental rights a reality for all who live in South Africa. GENDER JUSTICE The programme focuses on protecting the rights of people of all gender identities and expressions. Our work largely centres on gender-based violence, and in particular the trauma and structural violence people face when they are failed the very system. HOME, LAND & RURAL DEMOCRACY The CALS Home, Land & Rural Democracy programme focuses on ensuring that socioeconomic rights are realised by the state. 20

MANDELA INSTITUTE

In order to grow its economy, South Africa must compete in a fast-changing world economy, a global economic order where investment moves rapidly with little if any sense of constitutional patriotism or nationality. In the light of these imperatives the Wits School of Law launched the Mandela Institute in 2000 to honour the contribution of Nelson Mandela to the transformation of South Africa. Trade, Patent Law and Vaccine Procurement during the Covid-19 pandemic: Issues and Lessons for the Global South.

The Competition Commission and the Mandela Institute, hosted a panel discussion on the paper recently released by the Competition Commission titled, “Competition in the Digital Economy”. Deputy Commissioner of the Competition Commission, Mr Hardin Ratshisusu, presented the paper and the session was chaired by Mr Norman Manoim Acting Judge, South Gauteng High Court.

This webinar was hosted on the 3rd of February 2021. The Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment (CAPSI) Located at our Wits Business School, CAPSI was established to bridge the gap in the study, research and practice of philanthropy and social investment in Africa. The Centre aims to support the advancement of this field, by filling the current gaps in teaching, research, and publication, including launching a new journal to promote scholarship in the area. RESEARCH

RESEARCH Our research changes the way we do business and how we practice law and economics. It influences the public policy that builds the public sector and it grapples with the economic and social challenges facing our country. It also enables us to transfer new knowledge to our curricula and ensures students are at the leading edge of their professions. The Faculty has maintained its performance in research productivity, publication output, and number of PhD and Masters degree completions. Much effort has been focused on building research capacity and productivity at School level.

FELICIA KENTRIDGE ANNEX PLAQUE UNVEILING On Tuesday, the 6th of October 2020, then Wits Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Adam Habib unveiled the plaque for the naming of the annex which houses the Wits Law Clinic.

About Felicia Kentridge 2019 marked fifty years since Felicia Kentridge began supervising Wits law students in 1969. This was the first project of its kind in the country, with student volunteers providing free legal services to those most in need. With this innovative programme, Felicia laid the foundation for the establishment of the Wits Law Clinic and set a trend that other South Africa universities followed. WATCH VIDEO 26
