have a safe holiday! presidents column Sandi Brand & Sylvia Cutler PTA Co-Presidents

We hope that everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Now that winter is upon us the possibility of school closings or emergency closings are here. We will be using the district’s Call ’em All system to let our parents know when school will be closed or if we have a delayed opening, The PTA will activate the phone chain should the school close early due to weather or any other unexpected emergency. In the case of an early dismissal, we want to be sure that every child returns home safely. That being said, please make sure that we have your current home, work and cell phone numbers on file. Should any of these numbers change during the course of the year, please be sure to update us on those changes.

We will not have a January issue so be sure to check your email or child’s backpack often so you won’t miss any important event information or notices. After the break we will be “full steam ahead” on our major fundraiser – The Auction. Look for the flyers for information on advance ticket sales, raffles, and donation updates.

We have two cultural arts events scheduled for December. On December 10th, Ball in the House will be performing at South Mountain for our 3-5th graders. The “wow” factor runs high when this soul, funk and hip vocal group brings a cappella to life. On December 16th Sarah Partridge, jazz singer extraordinaire and Superstar mom brings her band to the Annex for their Jazz Explores show. We are thrilled to be able to have both of these talented groups at our schools.

Mark your calendars for January 21st when will have our General PTA meeting at the Annex. Our PTA will also host a Family Roller Skating Night at the Florham Park Roller Rink. Details for both of these events will follow shortly.

Lastly, we would like to say thank you to the members of our PTA Executive Board and for all of our incredible volunteers for the many hours that they have spent working on all of our fundraisers and events this first half of the year. We look forward to a fabulous 2009.

We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

Sandi and Sylvia

what is real? principal’s message Tom Gibbons, Principal

The quote on the November calendar in my kitchen reads, “It’s not what’s on the table that matters, it’s who’s on the chairs that counts.” I realize that the friends we have and the bonds of love we share are all that really matter. This holiday season, I wish you all the gift of love and friendship. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for the gift of your children in my life. Please take a few minutes to read the entire story of the Velvateen Rabbit. The message is universal. As adults, we need to remember the Velvateen Rabbits in our lives. And at times, when we are feeling less than Velvateen, we need only to look around to our families, to those who love us…their love is real.

From the Velvateen Rabbit by Margery Williams

“What is REAL?” asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. “Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?” “Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.” “Does it hurt?” asked the Rabbit. “Sometimes,” said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. “When you are Real you don’t mind being hurt.” “Does it happen all at once, like being wound up,” he asked, “or bit by bit?” “It doesn’t happen all at once,” said the Skin Horse. “You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

programming dec/jan’09 happy new year!

’twas holiday vacation

PROGRAMMING

(Or: How to Keep Your Kids‚ Minds Occupied and Your Home Intact Over the Holidays) ~Stacey Greene Wicksall (Librarian from Waterloo, NY), slightly adapted by Mrs. Suzanne Ng.

This month and next are very quiet for programming. There will be no General PTA meeting in December. Once the new year rolls around, mark your calendars for two events. One will be the January General PTA meeting scheduled for Wed., Jan. 21 at 9am at the Annex. The second will be our Family Roller Skating Event at Florham Park Roller Rink. More information on this fun event will be coming via your child’s backpack. We hope you have a wonderful, safe, happy holiday season. See you in the New Year!

It was holiday vacation for twelve whole days long, And mommy and daddy wanted nothing to go wrong- The presents had been chosen by relatives with care, In hopes it would save them from losing their hair!

Kara and Letitia thank you!!!

But children were zipping and zooming about- “We’re bored, we’re bored!” they exclaimed in a shout, So mommy looked at Daddy with a twinkle in her eye, “I have a solution that money can’t buy!”

dec 2008

And bundling their children they decided to go To the public library (in spite of the snow). They pulled in the lot and opened the door- Story Time had begun with room for two more! They heard a grand story about a mean, ugly Grinch- And created a craft; it was all such a cinch! They beamed with pride over the things they had made, Then dashed to the wall with the book shelves to raid.

PTA Purchases: • An iMac computer to serve as a central downloading center for the iPod listening centers. • A listening center for the South Mountain Kindergarten.

Story Inventing with author Mary Amato

page

“Look, here’s Junie B. and Artemis Fowl- These titles will keep us busy for a while!” The parents let out great sighs of relief- Children reading books meant an end to their grief! And back to their home they soon did travel With a stack full of mysteries to soon unravel- So when this vacation at once came to an end, They brought back the books they’d had out on lend. When back at the school the kids they did chatter, Of books they had read all about matter! And the teacher exclaimed with the utmost delight, “Joy over reading is a wonderful sight- It will bring your learning to a commendable height, So tell me the tales that you read before bed, Or share that adventure still swirling in your head, Reading is the best gift you gave to yourself, Lasts longer and better than one from an elf. I wish happy holidays to each one of you And may you read many-a-book all the year through!”
