DEAR 2024 GRADUATES,
Whether you come from a long line of Hilltoppers, were a first generation college student, changed your major more times than you can count or were a non-traditional student, this is a time to celebrate all that you have accomplished in your time on the Hill.
For some of us, this will be the first time we get to walk across a graduation stage and celebrate alongside those who helped us arrive here. For those who graduated high school in 2020, we each have our own stories of canceled proms, ceremonies and celebrations. We navigated those final weeks of school in isolation rather than shared excitement, and we continued forward in a time of great uncertainty.
While reflecting back on the moments we missed out on four years ago, we can recognize how special it is to celebrate this milestone surrounded by classmates who stayed up late studying with us, professors who inspired us and family who supported us through our climb up the Hill.
Whether you walk into this next phase of your life with a detailed plan or are uncertain of what lies ahead for you, stand tall as your resilience, dedication and achievements are honored. No matter how you arrived at Western, we hope that you are leaving with a better understanding of yourself and the world around you. Continue to share your Hilltopper spirit and wave your red towel wherever you go from here.
Congratulations graduates!

Staying Motivated During the Job Search
Story by Emma Dock | Photos by Maddie Hall | Illustrations by SarahThompson
Many students may go into college believing that once they graduate they will find their perfect job right out of the gate. However, that isn’t always the case.
Some students may have jobs lined up after they graduate, but there is no guarantee that they’ll stay there forever; some students may not have jobs lined up at all and others may have no idea what they want to go into after they graduate.
Bryce Stewart, a career coach in the Advising & Career Development Center, said that while it sounds silly, the best way to stay motivated during a job search is to just keep moving forward.
“Realistically if you’re not hearing back or if you’re getting ghosted or anything like that, you just have to keep going. I know that sounds like, ‘Well pull yourself up by your bootstraps,’ but if a company doesn’t want to hire you, there’s nothing you can do about it.” Stewart said. “It’s not fun job searching. It can be stressful and very anxiety-producing. The best thing you can do is keep moving forward and something will come along eventually.”
Stewart said that while the average hiring time in the United States is around six months, it’s very difficult to gauge how long someone could be waiting to get hired. He said some people apply and get hired within a month and others may not get hired for a year.
Stewart said that staying motivated during the job search is hard especially with other factors at play, like getting ghosted. It’s not uncommon to submit an application and never hear anything back, or to go to an interview and never get a call back, he said. He said while it may be common it doesn’t make it any easier and some of the time people just want to know why they got ghosted.
Olliver Benton, the general manager at Mindbender Escape Rooms, said that getting ghosted is often caused by a lack of time to get back to those candidates.
“Getting ghosted by an employer probably varies between large corporate companies and smaller run businesses. For smaller run businesses like Mindbender, it’s often a lack of time and getting back to those candidates or understanding that those candidates have probably already moved on to other applications.” Benton said. “I’ll take a look at an application, or
I’ll take a look at an interview and say, “OK, this person may not be an excellent fit. Let’s hold onto him until I get through a couple more interviews.” By the time we get to the end of a couple more interviews, it’s been a couple of months. It’s usually never malintent on the employer’s part. It’s just a lack of time.”
Sometimes there are ways to combat this lack of time and the chance of getting ghosted. Brian Ahern, a career coach in the Advising & Career Development Center, said that one way to combat getting ghosted is to ask one specific question at the end of your interview.
“The last question that they ask you at the end of an interview is, what kind of questions do you have of us? The most important question to ask is, could you give me an idea of when your timeframe is and when it would be appropriate for me to follow up with you?” Ahern said. “It is the most important question that you can ask. Then you don’t live in this uncertainty of when this employer is going to get back to you.”
8 | GRAD GUIDE
Bryce Stewart, a career coach in the Advising & Career Development Center.
Then there is getting rejected, potentially one of the worst feelings ever. There is a chance graduates have to go through many rejections before they get accepted. Ahern said that after a while, it’s hard to not let those rejections start to debilitate someone’s motivation during the job search, and gives his advice on how to deal with it.
“The first thing I would say is to normalize it to a certain degree. It doesn’t make it any better, but it is more normal to be rejected than you are accepted. Also, this might sound odd, but the amount of time you’re investing in it, versus being very strategic about your time.” Ahern said. “Statistics, even though this seems counterintuitive, say that it’s better to spend quality time applying for 20 jobs that you’re interested in — researching them, tailoring your cover letter, your resume — and focus on these 20-25 jobs versus going to Indeed and shooting out 200 applications.”
Benton said that the best way to deal with rejection is to remember that while rejection hurts, it is just a job.
“A job is a job, and you will find one eventually. I highly, highly recommend calling places the day after you put in applications.” Benton said. “It feels silly; it feels old-fashioned, and it feels like it may not work. But that is how I have most often gotten my jobs. But, in facing that rejection, at the end of the day, a job is a job, and you are going to settle into the job that you were meant to be in. So just keep pushing.”
There’s also a chance that a graduate finds a job they like but ends up leaving it for something better.
Stewart said that the average time for graduates at their first full-time professional job is 15 months before they leave and find another one. This first job could be exactly what the graduate wanted, but they discovered a new job while working there that they are more interested in. There is also a chance that this job wasn’t exactly what the graduate had in
mind so they decided to leave, Stewart said.
The whole point of this is to say that life is completely unpredictable, and no graduate has any idea what they will be doing in the next 10 years. Ahern said he had no idea he would work as many jobs as he’s had since graduation.
“I got my degree in special ed teaching. I started teaching and had 17 jobs since then, including running a coffee shop, being a career coach and working in business,” Ahern said. “You just don’t know what’s going to happen; you just need to get started.”
Graduates may have jobs lined up post-graduation, however this may not be the case for all. While this is a scary time for some, the best way to combat this is staying motivated and pushing forward towards their career.

Building a Community After College
Story by Pandora Booth | Photos by Emily Cross | Illustrations by Sarah Woodson
After finishing school, graduates may be looking for ways to build new friendships when they’re no longer surrounded by other people close in age and going through similar situations. Through activities in any city, there are many ways graduates can get involved in their community.
Christina Caron, the fitness director at Bowling Green Athletic Club, said working out can be a great way to get involved and make friends. The club offers classes that range from strength-based, flexibility and cardio.
She said that a lot of bonding happens within these classes compared to individuals working out on the gym floor. She said everyone who is involved always talks with one another whether it is their first class or they are a consistent attender.
“They’ll all catch up, and then a lot of times they’ll go get coffee next door and hang out with one another.” Caron said. “There’s a lot of bonding that goes on in the classes.”
Caron said that they strive to create
an encouraging environment to allow people at any fitness level to come in and enjoy the classes. She said instructors will modify the classes to make it enjoyable for first timers and people who have been at it for a few years.
“The gym itself is just a great place to get to know people,” Caron said. “Or graduates may make connections in here that can help them get a job.”
Chelsea Davis-Lamothe, the manager at Be Happy BG, said that the business offers many events for people to build community. They offer weekly yoga classes, massages and a salt cave, which is a room lined with six tons of salt.
She said they strive to create a peaceful and welcoming environment. The monthly events they offer to help build a community range from dog yoga, prenatal yoga and yoga with wine. She said it is a great place to make friends.
“We have a lot of people that come here to socialize, and the classes are just a side benefit,” Davis-Lamothe said.
She said when people go off on their own they may forget to take care of themselves, and coming to a place where everything is about personal well-being is a good reminder of self care.
“A lot of our regular yoga clients are now friends from coming here,” Davis-Lamothe said. “We have more people coming to these events, so I feel like that’s a good chance to meet people.”

The club takes place every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in the Lisa Rice Library. She said they create an inclusive environment and offer a place for people to crochet or knit, whether a beginner or a pro.
She said it is a great place to make friends because everyone has the same hobby.
“It’s not work. It’s not neighbors. It’s people who have the same interest that you do.” Start said.
She said she enjoys the club and has made a lot of close friends because of it. She said they have all started doing things together, such as recently going on a field trip to the fiber arts festival in Tennessee.
“It’s nice to have people who share your interest, and people you can talk to and not be judged,” Start said. “We just try and make it fun; it’s a great learning environment for anyone.”
While finding friends after college may seem difficult, becoming involved within a community by participating in what they have to offer is a great way to start. No matter where a graduate finds themselves in life, it is important to put themselves

Dreams Reimagined From
Childhood Aspirations to Adult Endeavors
Story By Emma Dock | Illustrations By Nicole Johnson
Everyone has been asked at least once, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Answers could vary from veterinarian to astronaut, and while that’s what they wanted to be as a child, that doesn’t mean that’s what they ended up becoming.
JESS HUGHES
When she was younger, Jess Hughes, a senior from Bowling Green, said she wanted to become a beauty queen. However, once she got to WKU, Hughes ended up majoring in English with a concentration in creative writing.
“I think for a long time I didn’t have a clear plan of what I wanted to do when I grew up. I didn’t even land on creative writing until after I finished my associates degree at SKYCTC. I even started doing culinary school right out of high school,” Hughes said. “When I was in high school I loved my English courses and wrote as much as I could. After I finished my associates degree, I decided to get back into writing, and that’s now my only goal.”
SEBASTIAN TINGLE
When he was in kindergarten, Sebastian Tingle, a senior from Somerset, said he wanted to be an artist, and he did just that. Tingle is graduating with a bachelor of fine arts in performing arts with a concentration in theatre and a bachelor of arts in film.
“When I was in kindergarten we did a ‘What do you want to be when you grow up’ activity in our local newspaper. We all would submit a sentence that would get published for all our parents to see. My sentence was, ‘Sebastian Tingle wants to be an artist because he draws really good.’“ Tingle said. “I think I intended to be a visual artist, but I think making art on stage is just as appropriate for my ‘draws really good’ skill set.”
ASHLEY RANGER
Ashley Ranger, a senior from Bowling Green, said she wanted to be a marine biologist when she was a kid. Ranger said she thought everybody wanted to because of how cool sea creatures are. She then picked majors that di ered: history and political science.
“In high school, history was always my thing. I consistently received the highest scores in my AP history classes and genuinely enjoyed learning about the past.” Ranger said. “I’ve also always enjoyed American politics and probably got way too into the 2012 election as an 11 year old. Once I began taking history and political science classes at WKU, I knew I loved it, but I wasn’t quite sure how I could get a career out of it. It wasn’t until my sophomore year that I realized I love law and considered a career within the field.”

MIKEL SNOW
When she was younger, Mikel Snow, a senior from Lexington, said she wanted to be a veterinarian. Helping animals seemed like a good gig for her, but once she got to WKU, she decided to major in social work.
“I chose a di erent career goal because I realized I wanted to be in a profession where I can directly make a positive impact on someone’s life. I also got bit by a cat once, so that a ected my decision.” Snow said.
TAEJA PARSONS
Taeja Parsons, a senior from Leitchfield, said she has wanted to be a teacher ever since she was a little girl. Now as an adult, her dream still has not changed.
“I used to play school and make my friends, family and sometimes my stu ed animals, be my students.” Parsons said. “I decided I wanted to be a teacher when I was in elementary school because school has always been my happy place, and my teachers were some of my favorite people. I saw the impact that my teachers made on me growing up, and I knew I wanted to be that person for someone someday. I just got hired at my old elementary school this week, and I’m so excited for my dream to come true this fall.”
FELICITY MCDONALD
Felicity McDonald, a senior from Taylorsville, said that she never had a clear goal in mind when she was younger, but writing was always extremely important to her. That’s why she majored in English with a concentration in creative writing.
“For a long time, I didn’t really have an answer, but I always inherently knew I wanted to write. I’ve just always liked telling stories, and I think that if you’re someone who inherently comes up with ideas — if you have crazy dreams that when you wake up at 3 a.m. and you’ve got to write it down — if you’re inherently that person, and you have that creative ability naturally, it’s almost like you have to follow that path.” McDonald said.
ALEXIS BROCK
Alexis Brock, a senior from Versailles, said that as a child she wanted to be a veterinarian. When she got to WKU, she made sure to follow that dream. Brock majored in biology with a pre-veterinary concentration, a minor in biophysics and a deaf studies certificate.
“From a young age I always knew that I loved animals. In school, I excelled in the sciences so naturally, I couldn’t see myself doing anything di erent. I have an intense passion for helping those who cannot advocate for themselves,” Brock said. “Every case is a puzzle that I have to solve with the limited pieces I am given. While challenging, helping an animal with its recovery or seeing the bond they have with their owner is extremely rewarding.”
