A Letter to My Freshman Self Story by Emma Dock | Illustrations by Nicole Johnson
Graduating students were asked, “If you could write a letter to your freshman self, what would you say?” Here are some of their responses.
You come out of this experience a better person than you would expect, and in hindsight, it wasn’t that bad. I’ll never regret coming to college or meeting the friends I have made while here.
Stone Bardwell Gallatin, Tenn.
Trust the process, and you will find your place. Also, nothing is ever that serious; just mind your biscuits and life will be gravy!
You won’t achieve all your goals. That’s OK. Life is difficult; enjoy it and let everything happen; it always turns out OK.

There is no such thing as bad change. Difficult change, sure, but nothing will be for the worse. I would let him know that at the end of it all, just a few more months before he says goodbye to his home on the Hill, he will be full of gratitude for the way that this school shaped him, and taught him the deep importance of giving in to change and never, ever meeting it with resistance.

Navigating the Next Chapter Story by Pandora Booth | Photos by Shannon Moritz | Illustrations by Sarah Thompson
As graduation commences and a new chapter of life begins, graduates may find themselves wanting to get lost in a new book. The staff at Raymond Cravens Library shared some of their book recommendations for graduates to find their next read..
“Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott Kathy Foushee, the interlibrary loan specialist, said that this is a classic book about four sisters whose father has gone off to war and they are left to live at home with their mother. She said it is a heartwarming tale of sisterhood and the troubles they face with growing up and societal norms. Foushee said she recommends this book to graduates because it deals with the trials and tribulations of becoming an adult. It speaks on marriage, children and relationships, and many young adults are dealing with those same aspects of life, she said. “I think there’s a lot of good advice and a good number of lessons that you can get out of this one,” Foushee said.
“Quarterlife: The Search for Self in Early Adulthood” by Satya Doyle Byock Morgan Moran, a library assistant, recommended this book to help people who are struggling with their mental health during a large change in their life. She said it is written by a mental health professional who speaks about how many people may feel dissatisfied and lost in their early 20s. She said the book gives readers ways to cope and deal with these struggles and frustrations because it is a stage of life that everyone goes through. Moran said that changes within anyone’s life can cause a lot of stress and it is important to find ways to overcome these feelings. “I think anytime you have a change in your lifestyle there’s a lot of stressors and fears and worries along with that,” Moran said, “There’s a lot of, you know, things to adjust to, and so mental health is important, and any way you can find to cope with those in a healthy way is important.”

“Thinking, Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman Brooke Gross, a health sciences librarian, said that this book talks about the differences between emotional and logical thinking. She said the author speaks about different parts of life where these different types of thinking can help leverage certain things, such as career decisions. She said that the author speaks on how mastering a balance between these two things can help with making clear decisions. “I think it is important to differentiate between different parts of yourself. I think it helps build emotional awareness,” Gross said, “You know, the more you can understand about how your brain works, the better you can leverage your insights.”
“The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse” by Louise Erdrich This novel is about a woman who was a nun but leaves that life behind to marry a man. However, a flood destroys their home. She finds a priest’s clothing in the flood and decides to become a priest on a Native American reservation, said B Turner, a senior from Georgetown and a part-time library employee. Turner said this book is a complicated exploration of gender and race relations in the 1900s, and it inspired them to do more research on indigenous cultures. They also said it is a very crazy and entertaining story. “I also just think that it’s really messy and complicated, I think more people should read messy and complicated things,” Turner said.
“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey Ashley Orehek Rossi, a STEM librarian, said that this book provides habits that can help anyone become more effective in their everyday, personal or professional life. She said these can be helpful with orienting and can lead to a path of overall wellness. “Graduating is hard. I was even lost when I graduated college years ago,” Orehek Rossi said. “Just having something to kind of give you some sort of sense of direction to know that life’s messy and it’s gonna get easier; it just takes time and it’ll get better.”

Having a professional online brand may help create an identity for yourself while helping you establish connections with others and paving the way for career opportunities. According to “The Ultimate Guide to Personal Branding” by Emma Brudner on the Hubspot blog, personal branding is an online image of someone’s personality, skills, experiences and behavior that define who they are. Having a personal brand can help set you apart from others in today’s competitive market and can help employers get a sense of who you are even when you aren’t in the room, Brudner said. Cliff Shaluta, advertising program coordinator and professor, said that some graduates will likely need a side hustle when stepping foot into the real world. Having a portfolio online is a great way to showcase your skills, Shaluta said. “They are not likely to make the money they want considering student loan debt, the price of housing and interest rates,” Shaluta said. “Most people in professions such as communications, journalism, photo, video, need to have a space to show what they can do to help gain exposure.” Shaluta said that LinkedIn is the baseline of what every student should have if they want to have a strong online presence. While it’s primarily a job connection network,
10 | GRAD GUIDE
you can make podcasts, link videos and see who is viewing your work, he said. Since the world is much more digitized than it used to be, LinkedIn is the primary method employers use to find people they want to hire, Shaluta said. “Frankly, most jobs are coming from online now, and LinkedIn is a big source of that because you can network so effectively with it,” Shaluta said. A trend that Shaluta has researched is the concept of the metaverse, and he believes that personal branding will extend into it. The metaverse is the next version of the internet with virtual worlds where people can shop, work and hang out together, just like in real life, according to Builtin.com. With the metaverse, there will be a space for people to curate their personal brand as well as many other aspects of their real-world life, Shaluta said. Anyone can put their car or their home in this digital space. “I truly believe that in the future, the metaverse is something we’re going to have to prepare for,” Shaluta said. “And if you’re a professional it makes perfect sense.” Shaluta and the advertising department launched a new course dedicated to personal branding. The goal of the
course is to prepare students to create a digital identity for future employment, Shaluta said. Wayne Simpson, the associate director of career development, said he has worked with many students at WKU to ensure that they are prepared for their lives after college.

Simpson believes that a personal brand is like a Venn diagram. “On one side you have how you view yourself, and on the other side you have how others view you,” Simpson said. “In the middle is your personal brand and what information you decide to put online for others to see.”
Cherry Creative Follow
Simpson said an online brand is a side dish to finding a job. While it’s not the whole meal, it’s still important for people to consider when putting themselves out there in hopes of being hired professionally. Having an online brand can either lead someone to getting a job or to losing out on a job. It’s very important to have a positive online presence and never put something online that you wouldn’t want someone else to see, Simpson said. “A lot of people don’t know by Googling their name, employers can find lots of negative things about you,” Simpson said. “It’s very important to know what your digital footprint is.”

Dealing With Imposter Syndrome and Building Confidence Story by Emma Dock | Photos by Emily Cross | Illustrations by Brittany Wiseman Nothing feels quite like the first day of a brand-new career. Nervous smiles, shaking hands, excitement and fear collide together as one feeling. Looking around at all these unfamiliar faces and hearing about their achievements and successes can be enough to make one wonder if they deserve to be there. Aaron Wichman, a psychology professor, said that imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon that can lead certain individuals to believe they did not work hard enough to get to where they are. This can lead to a certain fear of others finding out that an individual is an imposter and that they do not belong there. This constant self-doubt and anxiety can be very taxing on someone’s mental health. “The way I see it is that it’s based on selfdoubt about your abilities, and there’s a high focus, despite that, on trying to have a high level of achievement. What that winds up being then is you’re not sure what you can do,” Wichman said. “One of the consequences of that though is that when you do have success, you don’t know if you deserve that success.” Wichman said that imposter syndrome can affect many types of people, from graduate students to people starting their new careers. Leah Moss, an assistant professor of user experience, said that even though this is not her first job in her profession she still felt the effects of imposter syndrome when she started to work at WKU at the beginning of the fall semester. “Since I’ve been teaching college, I have felt imposter syndrome on a regular basis, at least every month. I strongly believe that in our culture and society, almost everyone will feel imposter syndrome at some point in their lives. In fact, it’s likely everyone will feel it at multiple times.” Moss said. 12 | GRAD GUIDE
Aaron Wichman, a psychology professor at WKU, said imposter syndrome can have negative effects on a person’s mental health as they doubt themself and their performance in the workplace.
Leah Moss, who started working as an assistant professor in user experience at WKU this semester, said she feels imposter syndrome in her professional life at least once a month.
Moss says that imposter syndrome for her is like any other overwhelming emotion. She names it, gives it a moment to come to light and then moves on from it. However, Taylor Davis deals with her imposter syndrome differently. Davis, an instructor in the School of Media & Communication, said that she has experienced imposter syndrome multiple times, but there was one specific moment that stuck with her. “This was several years ago, but I had just begun supporting these executives with their marketing and communications needs,” Davis said. “I kept wondering how the heck I got into this room with these brilliant, powerful women and what I was going to say to not sound like an idiot.”
GRAD GUIDE | 13
Davis said that she was finally able to calm down and push these thoughts aside as soon as a colleague came to her and said, “Taylor, you are the expert. We trust you.” She said that finding the people who believe in you and want to see you grow will bring you the most confidence. Davis said she is now gaining confidence in her new workplace every day. “I’m finding my footing with the logistics of teaching and ensuring my assignments and projects are what students need to learn and excel,” Davis said. “It’s an exciting opportunity to continue to grow and learn something new. I am comfortable with my students and hope they’re comfortable with me, and that’s what matters most.” Others find that pushing the limits will help build confidence. Daniel Keller, an assistant professor in the English department, said that working hard is the best way to build new confidence. “I think it’s important to push yourself to your limits. That’s how you know that you’re operating at the upper edge of your potential,” Keller said. “When you do this, you fail a lot, but you also get better at whatever you’re doing, and you learn that failure is fine and can be overcome. That’s really where confidence comes from — not successes, but rather failing and coming back from a failure.” Mi Sun An, an assistant professor in the School of Engineering, said that sometimes all someone needs to do to build confidence is to ask for help. An said that the best advice for anyone dealing with imposter syndrome and building confidence in a new workplace is to ask for help when needed. “That’s why we have mentors. If they find any weak point, any struggles in your work, they can help. All you have to say is ‘I don’t know how to do this. Can you help me?’ Then one day, you can be the one helping others.” An said.

We wish you the best in your careers and hope we have furthered your curiosity to continue your education.” Dr. Ray Blankenship, Analytics and Information Systems Department Chair “Congratulations, graduates, on earning your wings – now soar fearlessly into the next adventure. The diploma is not just a testament to what you’ve learned, but a symbol of the endless possibilities that lie ahead.” Dr. Alex Lebedinsky, Interim Associate Dean “Congratulations, Finance graduates! We are immensely proud of your achievements! The rigors you have faced inside and outside of the classroom have undoubtedly prepared you for bright futures. Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, ‘The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.’ So, choose wisely and don’t forget, ‘Wisdom outweighs any wealth’ (ancient Greek playwright, Sophocles). Oh, and stay in touch.” Dr. Indudeep Chhachhi, Finance Department Chair “Congratulations, graduates – YOU DID IT! You should be incredibly proud of yourself for reaching this milestone in your life. As you move forward with your careers and lives, remember and utilize the valuable lessons learned and the networks built during your time here on the Hill. Please keep in touch with all your accomplishments to come!” Dr. Whitney Peake, Management Department Chair

We look forward to seeing your success in the coming years.” Dr. Lukas Forbes, Marketing Department Chair “It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest congratulations on your graduation. As you move forward in your professional journey, I urge you to remember the words of Henry Ford: ‘Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.’ Collaboration and teamwork are critical components of success in the business world, and I have no doubt that you have developed these skills during your time at Gordon Ford. As you celebrate this momentous occasion with family and friends, take a moment to reflect on the achievements that you have accomplished and the opportunities that lie ahead. Once again congratulations on this incredible achievement, and I wish you the best in your future endeavors.” Dr. Dana Cosby, Associate Dean “Congratulations to the Class of 2023! You have grown; you have learned; you have excelled. You are ready to write your next chapter. As Dorothy said in the Wizard of Oz, ‘There is no place like home.’ So, go do great things, but come back home to the Hill often. We are proud of you, and we can’t wait to see what you accomplish!” Dr. Evelyn Thrasher, Interim Dean “Congratulations, Economics graduates! You’ve worked hard, and you’ve reached the goal. You are students of economics, and you will always carry that special ‘economic way of thinking’ with you. But what we taught you is just the beginning of your path, and you should never stop learning. Be well, be kind, and do good things.” Dr. David Zimmer, Interim Economics Department Chair
