DEAR 2022 GRADUATES, I never thought I would come to Western Kentucky University. As a kid I was raised by a genuinely crazed WKU alumnus. My father had a story for every corner on campus and would buy my sisters and I something from the bookstore every time we came down for our frequent visits. My favorite item was my Big Red backpack I rocked on the first day of first grade. I grew up with a love for Western. When it came time for me to decide on a college I never imagined that I could give WKU such a big spot in my heart like my father. But endless college visits had me searching for a college where I felt like I belonged. It was not until my future department head gave me a personal tour of the fourth floor of the Fine Arts Center that I realized what I was looking for had been in front of me the whole time. I couldn’t get over how genuine-hearted everyone at WKU was and how the art department felt like the place I could grow personally and professionally. We all decided to come to WKU for our own reasons, but we all ended up here together. We have made friends that will stick around for life, pulled late nights to get assignments done, and made memories on the Hill that will stick with us forever. With college coming to an end, it is inevitable to look back. I remember meeting a stranger on the roommate “dating app” who became a best friend and getting windburn for the weekly Fresh dinner during a winter storm freshman year. I spent endless hours “studying” with friends whether we were on the 27th floor of PFT, in Helm library (RIP), an art studio, or at the student publications building bonding over all the work we needed to do while simultaneously getting nothing done. These memories seemed minor at the time, but looking back they are what made my experience my own, and that’s true for so many of us. All this being said, the people really are what make the Hill home. As we adjust to this next phase of life there will be endless decisions thrown our way. The future is exciting; it is overwhelming, and it is uncertain. But you are prepared. Your time at WKU was filled with lessons that will help you the rest of your life. And while your whole life is ahead of you, remember to enjoy the now. You have made it! Congratulations! All your hard work and effort deserves to be celebrated. As a 2022 graduate you have endless opportunities to pursue. But wherever your path in life leads you, you will always have the Hill to call home.

Survival Guide for Post Graduate Job Prep Story by Téa Jones | Photo by Jess Arlinghaus Graduating college is no small feat, but it begs the question: What to do now? Stepping out into the real world can seem overwhelming and downright scary — but it does not have to be. Adrianne Browning and Jeremy Jenkins, both assistant directors working with career counseling in the Academic and Career Development Center, answered the following questions to make resumes picture perfect and nail those post graduation interviews.

1. What changes should you make to your resume to cater to a specific job interview? Browning: The changes you should make to your resume to cater to a specific job interview are the skills. Tailor the skills section for each job you are applying to. When the company searches for keywords, yours will be identified. Jenkins: That is dependent on the field because there are variations in resumes depending on the job market. The main thing is gap analysis which is taking the position description for the job and your resume and seeing what is different and what’s missing. It should mirror that position as much as possible.

2. What is the proper format for a cover letter if one is required? Browning: The proper format for a cover letter is block style. Everything is flushed to the left side of the page. Begin with your address at the top of the page, date submitted, and the company’s name and address. Never list your name at the top of the page because you end with your name as you would for any official letter. It should never exceed one page. Jenkins: Aesthetically, you typically don’t want more than three-fourths of a page on you including the heading and the sincerely. Material wise, the most common mistake that students make is using it as a repetition of your resume.

questions you truly want to know about, minus salary or benefits. Examples: What is the office culture? Do you offer a relocation package? Do you offer continuing education? Things like that. Jenkins: Imagine you have two places that are about to offer you a job. Pay is the same, location, all those things. What can you ask that is going to help you decide what makes you want one place over another? Don’t ask cookie cutter questions — don’t ask questions that you could find the answer to on your own. Also, don’t ask about salary until you have been offered the position because then you’ll know you’re a number one pick, and you have more opportunity to negotiate.

“Try to address the job description as much as possible on your resume whether that be work experience, on or off campus involvement, internships, or through 6. What is the best way to talk about classes,” said Jeremy Jenkins, an assistant director of WKU’s Advising and Career your strengths without sounding like you’re “bragging”? Development Center. Story by Gabby Wilson | Illustration by Katie Ulrich

Time is a fickle thing, especially with a big celebratory event ahead for many students: graduation. Whether that date has been slow or fast approaching, it nonetheless is happening. To enter the world as a newly graduated adult can feel like quite the tightrope to walk — but take some deep breaths! A tried and true solution to figure out what to do when it feels like there is so much to learn and adjust to is to read. These five books are the books to read to help figure out the world, what to do as a newly independent college graduate and how to take life by the reins and feel prepared for all its beautiful and messy moments.

1. “The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business” by Charles Duhigg.

According to Barnes & Noble’s website, this bestselling and widely popular book hones in on a widely celebrated and practiced method to help solve a multitude of problems: form and enforce good habits. Everyone has life goals, and to help achieve them this book dives into why people do what they do, the power of good habits and tactful habits to help the world feel less daunting and more conquerable.

2. “The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger.

This book comes recommended from WKU English professor David LeNoir. “Holden Caulfield is an open invitation for reflection on self, others, society and life,” LeNoir said. “Additionally, the book has its own life both as a cultural artifact and as the most frequently banned book in America, a status which often befuddles current readers.”

3. “The Defining Decade” by Meg Jay, PhD.

Being a 20-something can be both joyous and daunting with expectations put on those “twenties” years by either the outside world, people’s inner circles or themselves. According to Barnes & Noble’s website, “The Defining Decade” weaves together personal stories from 20-somethings themselves and how this time in life is wildly definitive and open to change in all parts of life including work, relationships, social networks and identity; this is a time where so much is possible and this book can be a trusty aide in figuring out the world and being a 20-something in it.

4. “Wild:

From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail’’ by Cheryl Strayed.

This is the time where being independent is crucial, but it is not easy taking on life in a more lone ranger type fashion. According to Business Insider, this book tells the real life story of Cheryl Strayed. In the midst of change and chaos in her life and not knowing where to turn, she turned inward — and also into the wild to take part in a hike that spanned thousands of miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State, alone and inexperienced. This book captures the beauty and chaos of a young woman setting herself onto a brand new journey, forging ahead against all odds, something every college graduate can relate to.

5. “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse” by Charlie Mackesy. According to Cosmopolitan, this book is quite the page turner and is a little less wordy and focuses on telling life, life experiences and lessons through illustrations. This book talks about how to stay hopeful even in times of shaky uncertainty; the world beyond school can seem quite daunting and too up in the air, but there is always hope and good to look forward to.

Graduating from college is an event that deserves to be celebrated. Through all its ups and downs, walking across the stage and receiving that hard earned diploma will definitely be a picture perfect moment. The journey ahead can seem daunting and overwhelming, but these books are here to say that life after college is conquerable; the unknown can be exciting, and all those planned life goals are achievable and in reach of your outstretched hand. Crack one (or all of them) open and let those nerves settle.

TAKING RISKS: Advice to Graduates Story by Adelle Honeck

It is not uncommon for college seniors to feel uncertainty as the day approaches that they take off their caps and throw them to the sky. While they have accrued a lot of knowledge, the next step of adulthood can come with a lot of pressure. Professors share their knowledge while teaching classes, but they are also people with life experience who can provide useful advice. Marko Dumančić, a history professor from Zagreb, Croatia, has been teaching at WKU for nine years. He developed his affinity for teaching when he was a high school student after being asked to give a presentation on a celebrity. He was so passionate about the topic, he ended up taking the entire class period lecturing his classmates on the actress Marlene Dietrich. The experience awakened Dumančić’s love for the classroom and sharing his knowledge. “From when I was 16, I knew that being in a classroom was something that meant a lot to me,” Dumančić said. One of the most important lessons that Dumančić learned during his high school years was not to doubt himself. “I was the shy kid in the back who did not want to participate for the fear of saying something that was wrong,” he said. “I think in particular because I was an international student.” Dumančić often found he doubted his answers and feared not knowing what was acceptable as an international student. Despite his self-consciousness in the classroom, he had a desire to share his thoughts and ideas. Pushing aside his lack of confidence, he began to take the risk of saying something that might be incorrect, knowing that it was the best way he could truly learn. Through this, Dumančić finally found comfort in speaking his mind. “If there is one key takeaway that is something that I want to share with my students, it is that we only grow in places of discomfort,” Dumančić said.

who might be working in their field. “Remember your connections, and when you meet people at a networking event or even by chance add them on LinkedIn,” Glenn said. She mentioned that a strong way to form a connection with possible employers is to send them a message relevant to something they have posted, creating a gateway into their network. LinkedIn is one of the top tools that Glenn recommends to her students.Through her own network of professional connections, she has been able to help many of her students. “You never know when even years later that professional connection can grow and turn into perhaps a job opportunity for you, or a job opportunity for someone in your network,” Glenn said. Glenn also wants her students not to be discouraged by a lack of responses when applying for jobs. It is not uncommon for students applying through job postings online to believe they have lost their chance after getting no bites on their resume. However, Glenn encourages students to reach out again. “Just because you already applied at a place and didn’t get a call back doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep applying,” Glenn said. “A lot of students think if you applied once, don’t apply anymore, but the field of HR has so dramatically changed it can be random why you didn’t get a call back.” Although applying for jobs can be overwhelming and stressful, Glenn said she does not want students to give up. Graduation is an important milestone in the lives of college students, but that does not mean it needs to be the peak of achievement. Post-grad is not the end, but the beginning of many Marko Dumančić is the Director for the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning life adventures and opportunities, if only students are willing to take risks and Associate Professor of History at WKU. Submitted photo by Bryan Lemon and continue to learn even after college. “Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether discomfort means we should stop doing something or whether we are uncomfortable because it is something that's new.” Dumančić finds it rewarding to see his students learn and grow. He wants his students to gain confidence in their abilities and to take risks to further their development not just in the classroom, but in life. “We’ve all been conditioned to see grades as growth or success,” Dumančić said. “But for me it was about seeing a student make progress in an area they thought they were deficient in.” Dumančić believes that while everyone has their limitations, it does

not mean progress is an impossible feat. He feels it is rewarding to see students make great strides in areas that they believed themselves to be lesser in, or even irredeemable. “Take a lot of risks, especially in your 20s,” Dumančić said. “I think your 20s are the time to take the internship, travel across the country to take a job, pursue a grant of some kind.” Kara Williams Glenn has been teaching classes in design and user experience at WKU for five years while also advising the student-run advertising agency Imagewest. She said she wants to make sure her students are prepared to enter the post-grad world by forming connections with people

Keep in mind that you’ll never hit the ball unless you swing. We wish you all the best in your careers and hope we have furthered your curiosity to continue your education.” Dr. Ray Blankenship, Analytics & Information Systems Department Chair “Congratulations, Economics graduates! You’ve worked hard, and you’ve reached the goal. You are students of economics, and you will always carry that special “economic way of thinking” with you. But what we taught you is just the beginning of your path, and you should never stop learning. Be well, be kind and do good things.” Dr. Alex Lebedinsky, Economics Department Chair “Congratulations, Finance graduates! You have met extreme circumstances head on and conquered them. We are immensely proud of your achievements! Ralph Waldo Emerson stated, “The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be,” so choose wisely. You have weathered one of the most difficult times in our lives during your time at WKU and still made it to the finish line. TARA SMITH Doctor of Nursing Practice

Tara, you set out to accomplish something big, a goal most give up on reaching. You are an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mother, and human being. I am so very proud of you and all that you have done in your life. You have persevered through many hard times, some cruelly difficult and you have reached that point where you may look back and take it all in with the knowledge that you made it! Nothing in this world can take this away from you. You have successfully completed a huge chapter in your book. Not only have you shown the world what you can do, you have become the best example for your children to follow. You have armored them with the knowledge and perseverance they need to reach their goals. The profession you have chosen is a hard one, one that requires not only time but a piece of your soul. It will wear you down and you will feel so much grief for others and you knew this going in, yet you still chose to be the heroine, you chose to dedicate your life to helping others. Being proud truly does not cover how I feel; you are a blessing. Thank you for choosing me to be your mom and I love you with all my heart. Congratulations baby girl you made it! With all my love, Mom
