How a former Herald editor embraced the rise of multimedia

Long before Ben Severance became an Emmy award-winning commercial director, his staff on the Herald grappled with multimedia as
captivated newsrooms in the late 2000s

Severance set his sights on WKU’s photojournalism department after seeing countless College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) Awards attributed to the university. He left home in New Hampshire and began his pursuit of a photojournalism degree as a freshman in 2008, and joined the Herald for photo and video his second semester

“There’s nothing I wanted more than to be good at photojournalism,” Severance said.

Erica Houge, a freshman right-handed pitcher/utility player for WKU Softball, didn’t just stay within the confines of the diamond in high school

In her hometown of Collins, Iowa, Houge competed in softball, basketball, cross country and track. She acquired multiple athletic and academic achievements, including the all-time scoring record for Collins-Maxwell High School Girls Basketball and valedictorian of her graduating class

Houge was destined for greatness from the start. Her father coached high school softball before she was born and continued to do so for over 20 years. She and her two older sisters grew up around the game under their dad’s guidance.

WKU Baseball Dominates Tennessee Tech

WKU baseball secured a 15-4 run-rule victory over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday night in Cookeville, Tennessee, using a strong offensive performance to go 11-1 in the season

The Hilltoppers tallied 14 hits and drew six walks, with every batter who recorded an at-bat collecting a hit Four players finished with multihit games

On the mound, WKU’s pitching staff limited the Golden Eagles to seven hits while striking out five Senior starting pitcher Cole Heath went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits

OPINION: The Oscars exceed low expectations (barely)

The 2025 Academy Awards happened on Sunday and they weren’t as abysmal as I feared they would be.

Going into this year ’ s awards I was quite frightened by the nominees and what the Academy would vote for. And while my fears weren’t unfounded, the Oscars managed to go above my very low expectations
