Be Inspired
Introduction ‘Be Inspired’ is West Lothian’s rallying call to schools and communities to embrace the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup spirit. This document highlights opportunities and programmes, delivered and supported by Active Schools and Sport Development, which will provide a lasting legacy after Glasgow 2014 and The Ryder Cup.
The following programmes are not delivered in isolation but form part of an ongoing number of sporting festivals, competitive events and other legacy programmes that schools and local communities have been participating in throughout the year:

What has been achieved so far? So far during the 2013-14 school year we have: • • •
Delivered 54 primary festivals and 23 secondary competitive events Organised 39,715 curricular taster participant sessions for sport and physical activity Inspired 5,120 pupils to take part in primary and secondary extracurricular activity
Spotlight on: The Glasgow Commonwealth Games mascot Clyde has visited West Lothian on a number of occasions in the run up to the Games including here at the Active Schools Summer Holiday programme at Deans Community High School.

Supported 343 volunteers to deliver extracurricular sport and activity sessions Provided a school-club pathway to 60 sports clubs in West Lothian 1,672 P5 pupils have experienced golf through the clubgolf programme

Be Inspired
Queen’s Baton Relay The Queen’s Baton Relay will be visiting West Lothian on 15 June. It will visit the major population centres giving communities the opportunity to join in the celebration of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. This event is strongly supported by Active Schools and Sports Development who will be leading and supporting activities within communities to highlight a pathway for regular participation in sport and activity.

Young Ambassadors Young Ambassadors is a national legacy programme for young people within secondary schools. The role of a Young Ambassador is to motivate and inspire other young people to become involved in sport and to generate enthusiasm for major games and events.
in addition to planning and delivering sports events for younger pupils. They also liaise with pupils and staff to discuss further sporting opportunities within schools.
West Lothian has thirty three Young Ambassadors. Pupils have been selected for their leadership skills to act as role models for pupils within primary and secondary schools.
Young Ambassadors will also be offered the opportunity to play a part in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
The activities undertaken by Young Ambassadors in West Lothian include delivering assemblies and promoting activities
Spotlight on: Eva Doolan (Young Ambassador at St Kentigern’s RC Academy) has been successful in applying to be a volunteer at the Commonwealth Games and will support and assist the badminton events at the Emirates Arena. Eva is also involved in the Excellence in School Sport programme. She recently competed in the Secondary Schools Badminton Championships winning Girls U19 Doubles and was the runner up in Girls U19 Singles.

Game on Scotland Game on Scotland is the official education programme of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and its legacy. It aims to provide learning and teaching opportunities related to the Games and beyond. Active Schools encourages schools to share their learning plans, projects and experiences through the Game on Scotland website with the intention that projects will be awarded a commemorative blue Commonwealth plaque for their work. Broxburn Primary School was the first school in West Lothian to be awarded the plaque by demonstrating an outstanding depth and wealth of learning opportunities related to the commonwealth. Support a 2nd Team Support a 2nd team is a programme of events, led by sportscotland, that create partnerships with nations and territories participating in the Commonwealth Games.

West Lothian is supporting the following three teams: Singapore, Turks and Caicos and Nauru. Schools are encouraged, through the Game on Scotland education programme, to find out more about these 2nd teams on a social and cultural level as well as a sporting one.
QBR School Baton Bearers Each secondary school in Scotland has been given the opportunity to nominate one pupil to carry the baton on behalf of their learning community during the Queen’s Baton Relay. All eleven secondary schools have nominated a pupil to represent their school and associated primaries. Erin Brannan, who is one of St Kentigern’s RC Academy’s Young Ambassadors, has been selected to represent young people on the Community Baton Bearer Judging Panel where she will help to select community Baton Bearers for West Lothian.

Excellence in School Sport Programme The Excellence in School Sport Programme (ESSP) supports high performing student athletes within West Lothian schools who compete at a national and international level.
The programme has two main aims: ‘Supporting the development of our elite student athletes’ and ‘creating positive sporting role models’. West Lothian students are supported through additional coaching, bespoke strength and conditioning programmes, nutritional advice, sports psychology support and physiotherapy support. ESSP currently supports 89 primary and secondary athletes including 54 who compete in commonwealth sports.
Active Schools Bowling Legacy Active Schools are working with a number of bowling clubs throughout the authority to encourage more young people to try out the Commonwealth sport. West Lothian is a consistent producer of world class bowlers and Active Schools are keen to utilise these role models to motivate and inspire our pupils. Active Schools Coordinators are working in partnership with bowling clubs to deliver activity sessions to primary pupils in

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Active Schools, PE staff and Sport Development deliver a variety of training opportunities through the Sport and Physical Education CPD Calendar. These courses allow staff to gain the knowledge and understanding to deliver activities either during curriculum time or as an after school extracurricular club.
Cluster Legacy Funding Active Schools Coordinators have been successful in securing over £20,000 of funding so far to benefit West Lothian schools. This funding will be used to support new and existing primary and secondary Legacy programmes. One example is the £9,000 secured by Coordinators within the Broxburn cluster through the following funding streams:
2014 Communities Fund
Commonwealth Champions in Schools Twenty four primary and secondary schools are taking part in the programme which will see high profile Scottish athletes deliver a series of three inspirational workshops to pupils during the school year. This year the programme includes athletes from eight Commonwealth sports: Judo, Rugby, Athletics, Hockey, Netball, Bowls, Triathlon and Swimming.
Lead 2014 Lead 2014 is a partnership between the Youth Sport Trust, sportscotland and Glasgow 2014 that aims to harness the enthusiasm and potential of young people to create the next generation of sports leaders. Lead 2014 will see secondary pupils from across a number of West Lothian secondary schools being trained in how to plan, organise and manage Commonwealth themed sports festivals for their local primary and secondary schools.
Festival of Sport
Funding coaches to deliver extracurricular clubs
The Festival of Sport is a great opportunity for clubs to showcase what they are about, increase their membership and attract new volunteers by putting on events, open days, demos and taster sessions. Taking place from the 4th to the 17th August this year, the festival presents a unique platform to immediately capture the interest generated by the games and raise the profile of sport in West Lothian.

The aim of ClubGolf is to create a development pathway from entry level through to the highest levels of achievement. Part of Scotland’s successful Ryder Cup bid, ClubGolf was born out of the Scottish Government’s pledge to introduce every nine year old child in Scotland to golf. In academic year 2012-13, 56 primary schools in West Lothian delivered the Clubgolf programme to 1,672 P5 pupils.
