Determining Need ALL APPLICANTS ARE INVITED TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID. A school’s “sticker price” is the published amount for tuition, room and board. Your cost is the amount you will actually pay once a financial aid award (including any grants or scholarships) is factored into the equation. W&L’s 2020-2021 costs for tuition, room and board is $69,675. Last year, more than half the entering class received aid with an average award of $51,383. Financial Need is the difference between W&L’s Cost of Attendance (direct and indirect costs like tuition, room and board, books and transportation) and the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Determining a student’s financial need — and the resulting aid award — is calculated using the FAFSA and CSS Profile aid application.
CALCULATING EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC) Many factors may affect the (EFC), including: family size, number of siblings enrolled in college, parents’ income and assets (in cases of divorce or separation, financial information from both parents is required), student’s income and assets. Not all families fit into the standard application so we work to address each unique situation. Once EFC is calculated, a student’s financial need will be fully met with a combination of grants (W&L funds that do not have to be repaid) and a $2,000 per year student work award. Our no-loan commitment means we won’t use loans to meet demonstrated need, but, for families who qualify, federal loans for both students and parents may be offered as an option to cover the family’s contribution.
