WYCAMP 2023 was a weekend of indulging in God’s miraculous works, of immersing in nature and allowing time and space to engulf campers, cabin leaders, servants and leaders. Experiencing WYCAMP as a camper, cabin leader and now speaker was a surreal journey, needless to say if it wasn’t for God there is no way this would have been possible.
The theme for camp this year was WONDER, though a huge topic to cover - it is within the gaps, as well as the fine details, that we find God and are able to fill in our own contribution or response to God’s mission. It’s easy to feel so small in the grand order of God’s creation, but we were special and valued enough to have God in flesh pave a way for humanity to be reunited with God in Heaven. To send off the campers, back to everyday lives, the final talk was based on our purpose, to praise and worship God, “let everything that has breath praise the Lord.” (Psalm 150) Leaving camp meant ripping open the safety net and popping the beautiful Christian bubble that was created at Ngaruawahia.
The decision to follow Jesus is not an easy road, but the battle is up to us. Many are taught the practices which guide and help grow our relationship with God and with one-another such as praying, reading your Bible, going to church/youth/prayer meetings but to be able to do this well is often a different story, to be able to practice in truth and in spirit (John 4:24) is pleasing to God and a few tips were shared.
position ourselves to receive from God An example would be, attempting to wake up early to seek God choosing to lie down and pray. You're bound to fall back to sleep. To purposefully rise and seek God is to sit, stand, bow with the intention to worship.
thank God for the details of our life It is easy to get bottled down by our troubles and worries, but when we change our lens to a grateful, thankful lens we are able to open up and focus on what we are blessed with rather than what we don’t have.
be aware of our current state to move forward with God’s will. We each have a natural pathway our minds tend to take. Sometimes these thoughts, ideas, plans are not of God. When we are aware of these ungodly habits, we have power through the Holy Spirit to redirect them to mirror Christ
Prayers and thoughts are with our campers, youth leaders, servants and leaders that they are adjusting well back into life. With God’s help, they are able to continue the good fight.
Millwater Wesleyan Church had a fantastic time at WYCamp 2023. The camp was a time where our youth deepened their relationship with God through the messages, worship and time spent together. Seeing the spiritual growth in the youth over the camp and the continuation afterwards has been incredible. Our youth got to know each other on a deeper level and made connections with youth from other churches.
These connections are still active, and we will work on enabling the youth to keep these friendships up through joint youth group evenings. Our youth had a great time in nature and exploring the wonder of God’s creation. It was awesome to see some of the shy youth getting involved in the games and conversations with others. WYCamp was excellent for our youth as well as the leaders. It has inspired us to work on growing our youth in 2023. We are excited to see what God has in store for us this year and looking forward to WYCamp 2024.

Sunday 12 February was a pivotal day in the life of East City Wesleyan Church in Auckland. We gathered to welcome Rev. Brett Jones to ECW as our new Lead Pastor, along with Kristen, and their children Rhys, Raegan, Ryleigh and Rory. In October last year we announced that Brett would take the role of serving God at ECW and leading us into the next phase of our development, following the retirement of founding minister, Rev Dr Richard Waugh. Since then, Brett has finished his service at cession|community and taken a well-earned sabbatical. Then, on 12 February, Brett and his family joined us back at the church that he helped to plant many years ago.
The induction of a new minister is normally led by the National Superintendent of the WMCANZ, however, because Brett is the National Superintendent, the formalities were led by Rev. Peter Benzie, National Church Director of Operations. After the formal affirmations of commitment from Brett, Kristen and the congregation, there was a laying on of hands and prayer time. The family were all presented with gifts, then Brett was presented with symbols representing each of ECW’s values - Christ centred, Bible based, Holy Spirit led and Vision driven - and a clock to represent God’s timing of this call.
Brett then shared his first sermon as ECW Lead Pastor, in a series titled “Coming Home”. Brett has indeed come home. We welcome him and his family and praise God for His coverage of ECW at this time.
