Yeah, I know, we ’ re all more than a little bit sick of hearing the word ‘covid’. Yet like it or not, you and I have lived through - and continue to live in - a time that history books will be written about. They’ll write about our experiences throughout the pandemic, sure. But they’ll also write about the way it's changed the world we live in;
Its changed the way we shop (online predominantly).
Its changed the way we eat (we’re more likely to get ‘uber eats’ than we are to bundle the family off to a restaurant when we need a night off cooking).
It's changed the way we work (more people are working at home than ever before, and zoom meetings remain common).
It's changed the way we do church (perhaps we’ll just watch the livestream this week).
The history books will write about how we now live in a world that is low on face to face connection, yet high on choices. If everything is live-streamable, or everything is available online, I have endless options about what I participate in, what I consume - all while never actually having to interact with others who are consuming the same content.
They’ll write about a post covid world which is low on commitment (nobody actually expects me to be at any given event every week)…. but high on exhaustion; we are busy. And tired. We are running on information overload.
The history books will write about a world where more and more the temptation is to compete for people’s attention……the temptation is to believe that seeing as people have endless choices for how they spend their time, and they have endless options for for how to do church, we’d better make sure what we do is absolutely awesome.
And yet in the middle of all the choice, and in the middle of all the busyness, and in the middle of all the exhaustion, I really do believe Jesus is still speaking the invitation to come, to follow, to be transformed by him. And to do so, we ’ re going to have to be a little counter-cultural.
We’re going to have to focus on connection, rather than just content. We’re going to have to introduce people to costly discipleship - the kind that takes commitment, and time, and accountability, and authenticity. We’re going to have to let go of competing for people’s attention, and simply offer them Jesus instead.
Wouldn’t it be great if the history books wrote about a church (your church and mine) that offered Jesus to a post covid world?
If you haven’t heard already, 24/7 Prayer NZ are inviting churches to pray into the day of Pentecost, taking inspiration from the original prayer room of the church. At the end of that prayer meeting, the Holy Spirit was poured out, and the church was born! There is a deep stirring emerging in New Zealand to unite in prayer, asking God to pour out his spirit afresh on our churches and that his kingdom would come and rewire our culture.
If you ’ re keen to find out more, head on over to their website.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. ”
