If you ’ ve ever been in a room full of people and Anton Haines was in that room, then you’ll leave having made a new friend.
“The Youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow”, a quote that weighs on my heart for how truthful it is In a world where they are growing up surrounded by confusion, corruption and hate, there HAS to be people willing to shine that light of joy, hope and love People who are willing to give them the tools to become who they were designed to be To chase their purpose, to uplift and support their dreams These people create that “Machine” of change, and I will do my bit to be a Cog in that machine!
Our Thursday afternoon youth group was beginning to grow in numbers and Redhill Community Centre was in need of youth workers. We put out a call for expressions of interest and Anton was interested!
Our youth group is now called THRIVE We meet on Thursdays between 3 pm and 5:30 pm. And we need more volunteers!

Anton and I connected at Breathe 2022, a retreat for Wesleyan young adults Later in June, we decided to catch up for a coffee only he suggested spending the Thursday afternoon with our youth group. Before you knew it, he made it a point to volunteer on Thursday afternoons whenever possible
Anton started as a Youth and Community Worker for Redhill Community Centre at the beginning of Term 3 and it has been a blessing and encouragement to watch him engage with our rangatahi. The youth have accepted him with much love and look forward to what he might have planned for each Thursday It is a privilege to serve and minister alongside Anton

Every Monday we hold a youth 'Bible Talk' in person and online, where we have been studying the life of Jesus in the book of Luke Starting with 2 willing youth it has now increased to around 10 regular youth and occasionally up to 20 participants (including some that don't come to Sunday service).
Our latest event was a G.I.G (God is good) Night, where we collaborated with Streams Community Church to host a musical event. We ended the night with praise and worship and a very short message and an altar call The venue was packed with up to 50 youth and parents.

This event in particular has definitely boosted youth participation and spirituality in terms of growth and has ignited a fire to learn more and do more

At a time in history when uncertainty is all around us, we want to slow down and observe the wonderful world God created The glimpses we get from the created world are hints of who God is and his character and we see it most clearly in Jesus Christ. We want our young people to “Wonder” at the goodness, mystery, beauty of God’s created world... and respond in worship- with our hearts, mind and whole beings! Come along and invite a friend the weekend!

City Cross Link
The Pastor’s message was about the great Love of the heavenly Father manifested in our earthly fathers. A special prayer was offered by the congregation to bless and honour all the dads that Sunday.
Sunday 4th of September 2022 was a big day for City Cross Link. The reason was, it was a triple treat celebration. On top of our monthly Communion celebration it was also Father’s Day and Baptism Sunday. About a hundred people showed up to church that day.
The music and the whole worship service were all-dad sponsored events. This means from the opening prayer to the benediction they were all conducted by dads. About 30 fathers were acknowledged and prayed over as heroes in their respective families. Each dad received a customised mug with their own photo together with their kids.
After the shared lunch that day the congregation proceeded to Onehunga War Memorial Pool for the baptism service. Twelve brothers and sisters boldly declared publicly their testimony of faith in Jesus Christ by submitting to water baptism. Among them was the Rosanes Family, a family of five members from Kaiwaka, a fruit of CCL’s Northland outreach network.
CCL looks forward to more harvest of souls especially next month (October) as we anticipate God’s mighty outpouring in our congregation for our 5th Anniversary celebration from the time the work started and 3rd year as part of Wesleyan Methodist Church of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Sometimes ministry is easy, even thrilling, and other times full of challenge and occasionally with profound disappointment. We often minister in a very ‘human’ environment within the Church with real and diverse peoples.

I recall a saying from Augustine, “Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you. ” The truth of these words has been a constant theme song for me, contributed to by the inspiration and example of ministers and lay leaders who have inspired and encouraged me over the years.
Habits That Help Sustain Ministry
1) Personal Relationship with God through Jesus Christ and Constant Welcoming of the Holy Spirit Such nourishment for daily work and ministry activities is essential
2) Being Optimistic and Looking for God to Present New Opportunities and People to Meet and Minister too Prevenient Grace is the reality identified by Wesley to describe how we work with the Holy Spirit who goes before us.
The editor has asked me to identify five habits that I would recommend to others that can help support sustained ministry. This list is hardly exhaustive, but here in a succinct way are five habits that I have engaged over the years in my ministry to help me continue in a healthy way:
By Rev. Dr Richard Waugh
There is no doubt that John Wesley was an activist with a holy discontent. Like him, we are called to get busy with ministry and take up the opportunities God presents to us every day.
As I look back over 40 years of full time Christian ministry, the deep sense of call to serve, sacrificially at times, has been a dominant theme.
Familiarise yourself with local history and stories (Maori/Pakeha/ Pasifika/Immigrant). Read history resources about your local area, and nation, and development over the years. The Church is not a club but a mission and not in isolation from where it is located in time and place. As a pastor, take a role in the wider community; do at least one thing! Model practical salt and light involvement to your people.
3) Good Time Management and Planning Ahead
4) Understand your Local Context and Serve your Local Community
Practice ecumenical openness and speak well of other churches, their leaders, and other Christians. Promote a ‘Catholic Spirit’ as Wesley called it. Affirm and work with those of theological/Biblical like-mindedness, and for the others be cautious but always treat them with respect.
Don’t be idle but account for every hour. Diary planning is vital, consider the rhythm of the year ahead and for the next two or three years. Identify milestone dates for your church and community and plan appropriate events. Learn to be a good agent of grace and truth now and into the future. Use any excuse to celebrate God’s love and presence in the life of the congregation.
Here is a helpful prayer of John Wesley (1768) whatever you command, thankfully suffer whatever you choose for me, and be ever ardent to obey in all things your holy love Amen

5) Partnership with Other Christians
“Deliver me, O God From a slothful mind, From all lukewarmness, and all dejection of spirit I know these cannot but deaden my love to you; mercifully free my heart from them, and give me a lively, zealous, active and cheerful spirit; that I may vigorously perform
breathedandis usefulforteaching,rebuking, correctingandtrainingin righteousness,sothattheservant ofGodmaybethoroughly equippedforeverygoodwork.'2
There are some that diligently work their way through the Bible each year with no particular plan. Then others who use a daily devotional to guide them in their readings. Do you have a reading plan that helps you to engage in Scripture reading? If this is an area that you need to develop, take the time to talk with some of the wise Christians around you and ask what they do that works. There are some apps and online resources that might help in your journey. Perhaps you could try one of these: The Word for Today produced by Rhema Media. Bible App | Bible Gateway

This was evident as our congregation at East City Wesleyan Church in Auckland approached the retirement of Senior Minister, Rev Dr Richard Waugh QSM, who had completed 22 years of service as founding Senior Minister at ECW and a total of 42 years in local church service, including time in senior church leadership roles in our denomination and ecumenically.
The celebration of Richard and Jane’s service was centred around 9 11 September, but it started well before that weekend. Foundation members of ECW who are still part of our congregation, gathered to reflect on Richard’s bold leadership 22 years ago. A women ’ s ministry luncheon was held for Jane. Richard and Jane’s home group recognised their care and friendship over a shared dinner, and Richard’s innovative outreach was evident once again at his highly successful Fathers’ Day ’Blokes, Cars and Bikes’ event.
Sacrificial Service
By Judy Parr, ECW Servant Leader
Extended sacrificial service warrants an extended period of thanksgiving and acknowledgement as it draws to a close.
The farewell celebrations honoured Richard’s visionary leadership, his concern for our spiritual needs, his public facing faith and his preaching, grounded so firmly in the scriptures and the Wesleyan tradition. We were also thanking Jane St George Waugh, whose friendship, prayer support, teaching and compassion enriched the life of our congregation and whose architectural design skills were put to good use in the development of the Church Centre.
At the Sunday morning thanksgiving service Richard and Jane shared a message and final prayers, and served communion together. Tributes were shared by Judy Parr, on behalf of the ECW congregation, and by Brett Jones, National Superintendent. The music of our multicultural congregation enriched the worship.
The farewell weekend began on Saturday morning with a drop in ‘Meet and Greet’ event, where the ‘ open mic’ times prompted much reminiscing. On Saturday evening we gathered for dinner and a cleverly themed celebration. Readings from an imagined autobiography were accompanied by a rich array of music, dance, video messages and photos. The evening demonstrated our gratitude for Richard and Jane’s service, amidst laughter and nostalgic tears. We finished with the hymn ‘God be with you till we meet again’.
It was a privilege to have Dr Craig and Tammy Dunn join us for the weekend from Indiana, USA. Craig is CEO of the Wesleyan Investment Foundation (WIF). He was influential in supporting the purchase of the church building in 2007. At the service on Sunday Craig gave us an unexpectedly favourable update about WIF’s investment in the church, but that is a story for another time!
Thanks were also expressed over the weekend for the extended Waugh family Simon, Theresa and Kristie for their full participation in the life of ECW, and Jane’s parents, Revs Doug and Ruth St George, for their support and the crafting of our beautiful sanctuary furniture. Visits in the early years by Richard’s mother, Rev Jean Waugh, were recalled with appreciation.
www.ecw.org.nz

Richard and Jane for your 42 years of sacrificial service and your 22 years of commitment to God’s work at ECW. We ask God to bless you in all that is to follow.

Thank You
