How to choose where to live What to base your decision on varies from person to person. Each hall has different amenities and special features, so some things to consider are: • Proximity to class, computer lab, recreational facilities and food • House, suite-style or traditional community with shared bath • Learning communities • Hall amenities Most residence halls are “doubles” with two people sharing a room. Other rooms types are: Triples: Burnhams, Draper, Davis, French, Henry, Siedschlag, Zimmerman. Quads: Burnhams, Draper, Siedschlag. Quads have two double rooms connected by a common living room.
Emily Sophomore Grand Rapids, MI Major: Pre-Occupational Therapy “I love living in the residence halls. There is always someone to hang out with or study with. I’ve met so many awesome people and love the community it allows me to be a part of.”

Student involvement
Staff to help you succeed
There are a lot of opportunities in the residence halls to meet others and make a difference. It’s up to you to choose what to do and how much you want to participate. Activities are planned weekly in each hall. Whether you want something informational or are in the mood for some fun, it’s not too hard to find things to do right in your building. There are also several leadership opportunities including attending conferences, involvement in hall organizations and staff positions.
An outstanding team of professionals and students staff our residence halls. Your primary staff connection will be the resident assistant, or RA, on your floor. As undergraduate students, RAs are selected for their skills in reaching out to peers, listening to concerns and knowledge of campus. They help build social connections in the hall and serve as a personal resource for you.

WMU provides a variety of support services and opportunities for its students. Housing staff frequently partner with other Student Affairs offices to expand the student experience or set up individuallytailored support for students who are struggling. Collectively, we strive to make the student experience well-rounded and memorable.
Beyond the classroom
“Student Affairs looks forward to partnering with you as you engage in your own learning and personal development. We encourage you to take advantage of the full array of opportunities intentionally designed to contribute to your academic success.”

Student support services | Parent information
Parent information Residence Life believes parents and families are active partners in their student’s education and success at WMU. Coming to Western is not just an experience for your student. We want it to be a family affair!
Life on campus Residence Life staff strives to create a supportive and engaging experience for students. We connect students with one another, form positive social outlets, teach them life skills, intervene when there are concerns and treat students as adults. Whether it’s offering more than 1,000 activities for students to attend or talking with an individual about academic struggles, we bring intentionality to give students a complete Western experience.
Parenting a college student One challenging transition you may experience when your student comes to WMU is how to be a long-distance parent. You’ve been right there
for your student his or her whole life, and it’s not the same trying to be a parent over the phone or email. Be assured that we are committed to your student’s success. If you sense there is a problem, call us or have your student talk with us. We can help in many different ways if we know what is going on. Visit wmich.edu/housing/parents for advice on how to answer some of the questions students have when they call home.
What’s next The next big step for your student is signing up for a residence hall. Review this guide with your student and discuss his or her ideas about next year. We recommend that students complete the online sign up process independently to become familiar with the system. However, we know that sometimes a little help and reminding from mom or dad is needed. If you are signing up your student, talk first about his or her preferences so you know what to select when signing up.
Parent and Family Programs Western Michigan University is committed to parents and families as valued partners in your student’s educational experience, and Parent and Family Programs is here to serve you. Office services and programs are designed to support YOU as together we support your student’s growth, personal development and overall success. We are readily accessible to help you navigate through the University and assist with any concerns you may have. wmich.edu/parents

When to sign up
Roommates
Sign up starts at noon February 3, 2015. Assignments are done in the order contracts are received, so signing up early is always better. If you have a roommate request or want a learning community, contracts should be received by May 15.
If you have a roommate preference, provide the name and Bronco NetID of the individual. Both roommates must request each other, and both contracts must be received by May 15.
Hall choice Pick six different buildings so we have a good idea of where you want to live on campus if your first choice hall is unavailable.
How to submit your housing and dining contract Apply early. You will increase your chances of being assigned the hall of your choice and being paired with your preferred roommate, if applicable. Assignments are done in the order signed contracts are received, so if you’re ready to go, just log on. If you prefer not to register online, let us know and we will mail you a contract.
Apply for housing
If you want to live with someone new, we use answers to lifestyle and interests questions to match you up.
1. Go to the GoWMU portal housing channel or wmich.edu/housing and select the “Sign Up” button. You will need your Bronco NetID and password.
We are unable to accommodate suitemate requests or roommate requests for threeperson rooms and quads.
2. Answer a series of questions, including ranking your residence hall preferences, giving us roommate information and selecting a meal plan. 3. Once you complete your preferences, print a copy of the 2015-16 Residence Life and Dining Services Contract.

Quick tips

Learning community Learning communities are floors within buildings, so picking the hall hosting the community does not mean you’ll live there. Be sure to select the learning community you want from the drop-down menu in addition to selecting the hall where it’s housed. If you are considering an academic learning community and want to live with a friend who is not majoring in that college, you may still request each other as roommates.

Am I done? Signing up online does not confirm your room and meal plan for the fall. The last sign up screen prompts you to print your housing and dining contract. Read it, sign it and mail it back to the Residence Life office. Then your sign up process is complete.

4. Review the contract terms. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT YOU ARE ENTERING INTO A LEGALLY BINDING CONTRACT WITH THE UNIVERSITY. Upon signing this contract, you (and your parent(s) or guardian if you are under the legal age of 18) become responsible for all the terms and financial obligations of your contract until the end of the spring semester. 5. Sign the contract and return to: WMU Residence Life 1903 W. Michigan Ave Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5312 (269) 387-4786 (fax) or email rl-info@wmich.edu
Failure to submit your signed contract will stop your room reservation process. Both the online information and your signature on the contract are required to complete your application. 6. Welcome to the WMU residence halls!
