Behind the ear hearing aids are an excellent choice for someone with high frequency hearing loss. Rather than using a traditional ear mold and thick tubing, a thin tube can be used with a disposable dome to hold the aid in place. This is usually referred to as an "open fit" solution. The thin tubing is very discrete and the vented dome allows air and sound to enter the ear canal instead of plugging it up. Often, hearing aid users report that their own voice sounds hollow or blocked when wearing custom hearing aids. Open fit aids minimize this problem and feel much more comfortable. They provide amplification in the higher frequencies while allowing the individual to hear the lower tones through the vented dome. This usually results in a more natural sound quality.

I frequently suffer from constipation and am trying to eat more fiber. However, I am confused by the information that I have read about the different types of fiber. Can you explain the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber?

There are two types of fiber. Soluble fiber dissolves and breaks down in water and is found in apples, oranges, oat bran, barley and others. Insoluble fiber is also known as roughage and passes through your digestive system almost intact and is found in food such as whole grain cereals, oatmeal. pasta. and flaxseed. Insoluble fiber is known to promote bowel movements and prevent constipation. However, it is important to consume both soluble and insoluble fiber because each provides unique benefits for general health. It is important to drink plenty of water as you add high fiber foods gradually.

My friend said the small behind the ear hearing aids are best for high frequency hearing loss. Is that true?

STREU S

Dena Martin, MSE Executive Director

My child has a difficult time with transitions. What can we do to help? One approach is to minimize unexpected changes by using a visual schedule of events. Changes can even be

made positive by describing something fun that will happen. Some children have a much more negative response when a change is announced by a person than by a timer. Another strategy is to give the child a note or an item that "needs" to be delivered to a specific adult in the next setting. Giving the child a "mission" seems to reframe their role from that of a victim of circumstance to one of importance and responsibility.

Q A

Can brain training make a difference for people with ADD or ADHD?

In many cases yes. Attention is a cognitive skill that can be improved and developed. Neuroscience shows that by targeting and strengthening the under active area of the brain responsible for inattention, attention can be strengthened. Brain training does just that, ultimately strengthening cognitive function, allowing most to be successful without the use of medication.

WASHINGTON — Democrats unveiled a party

platform at their national convention Monday that echoes President Barack Obama's call for higher taxes on wealthier Americans while backing same-sex marriage and abortion rights. Delegates voted on the platform Tuesday. "Today, our economy is growing again, al-Qaeda is weaker than at any point since 9/11, and our manufacturing sector is growing for the first time in more than a decade. But there is more we need to do, and so we come together again to continue what we started," the platform said. The document is a sharp contrast from the Republican blueprint that the GOP adopted at its convention last week. The Republican plan would ban abortion and gay marriage, repeal Obama's health care overhaul law and shift Medicare into a voucherstyle program. Democrats acknowledged those divergent views. "This election is not simply a choice between two candidates or two political parties, but between two fundamentally different paths for our country and our families," the Democrats said. Abortion

The Democratic platform states that the party "unequivocally" supports Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal, and "supports a woman's right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay."

Defense

The platform says Democrats have responsibly ended the war in Iraq, put the al-Qaida terrorist organization on the path to defeat with the killing of Osama bin Laden and reversed the Taliban's momentum to set the stage for the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Democrats say they want to maintain a strong military, but argue that in

the current fiscal environment, tough budgetary decisions must include defense spending. Gay marriage

The Democratic platform supports the movement to get equal treatment under the law for same-sex couples. The platform says: "We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference." Health care

The platform pledges to continue building on the new Affordable Care Act. It says accessible, affordable, high-quality health care is part of the American promise, that Americans should have the security that comes with good health care, and that no one should go broke because they get sick. Immigration

The platform says "Democrats are strongly committed to enacting comprehensive immigration reform." Immigration overhaul would include bringing "undocumented immigrants out of the shadows." Medicare Democrats say the

new health care law makes Medicare stronger by adding new benefits, fighting fraud and improving care for patients. "Democrats adamantly oppose any efforts to privatize or voucherize Medicare," the platform says. Taxes The Democratic platform calls for extending the middle-class tax cuts for families who make less than $250,000 a year, and promises not to raise taxes on them. A typical family has saved S3,600 during Obama's first term.

Democrats have dropped from their party platform recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Four years ago, Democrats stated unequivocally that "Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel." Israelis and Palestinians both claim the city as their capital. Democratic spokeswoman Melanie Roussel! said the Obama administration is taking the same Jerusalem policy as every Republican and Democratic administration since 1967.

Simple steps can make your family more efficient when it's time for homework Almost everyone has a habit they wish they could break, and with the kids back in school, there's no better time than now to identify and break routines that could be slowing your family down.

and routines, and it can be hard to see alternatives. Trying out new things, even once, can open your eyes to great possibilities. • Add in rewards: A great way to overcome bad habits is to integrate a rewards system. Rewards are important because they help reinforce good behavior and keep everyone motivated to stick with the new routine. Bad habits may be hard to break, but with a few simple steps, you can weed out routines that are slowing your family down and be on your way to a happier, better life.

• Identify the bad habits: The first step is identifying what needs to be changed, as many of us don't even realize just how many habits we've formed. Take time as a family to come up with goals and identify roadblocks. • Try out alternatives: We may not like them, but we all become attached to our habits

Created 50 years ago, the academy provides a classical liberal arts education. According to Brookfield Academy, the school embraces the values of intellect, character, truth, individuality and heritage. exercise these gifts responsibly. Inspiring their students to "reach for the stars," the school reports a challenging curriculum, small class sizes, and a college preparatory learning experience. One hundred percent of their graduates enter a four-year college or university upon graduation — many entering those schools with numerous Advanced Placement credits. At Brookfield Academy, students, teachers and parents work together as essential partners in the learning process, making academic pursuits a priority. Extracurricular opportunities in theater, music, art, athletics, clubs, service projects and social events give students an opportunity to challenge themselves, make new friends, have fun and grow as leaders. Your dollars spent in your local businesses have three times the impact on your community as dollars spent outside of Platteville. When shopping locally, you create funds for city and county services through sales tax, which will in turn help keep our property taxes down. These funds are invested in neighborhood supports including police, fire and ambulance services as well as park and library improvements.

The project was privately funded by the New London Area Chamber of Commerce and the New London Youth Baseball Organization. Both groups are excited to have made valuable contributions to our community. If you have any questions or concerns about our facility please call our office at (920) 982-5822 or stop in.

It's hard to believe that we have been in our new office at 420 N. Shawano St. for almost three months. We have been busy organizing and getting settled in. Our new facility is working wonderfully for us. With our increased visibility we have noted a substantial increase in foot traffic as well phone inquiries. Our new facility has a 24-Hour Visitor Information Center with phone books, maps, business cards and brochures for local businesses and statewide tourism information. We do have space available for promotional materials from our members and event posters for area happenings. If you have items to be displayed in our visitor center please drop them off anytime.

healthWISE uestion: What is the importance of treating hearing loss?

nswer:

Jim Cournoyer

YOUR HEALTH INFORMATION SOURCE

Licensed Hearing Aid Specialist, Better Hearing

When the human ear stops hearing sounds, as occurs with a hearing loss, the ear declines in its ability to hear sounds even further. In effect, the ear is not exercised, and the brain forgets its former ability to hear and understand those sounds. This is a very simple description of a process called auditory deprivation. The longer a hearing loss is ignored, the worse will be the effects of this deprivation, to a point that they become irreversible. Hearing instruments can stop, and in many cases reverse, auditory deprivation. The instruments provide stimulation, or exercise to the damaged nerve cells. In case of hearing loss, the sooner one begins to use hearing instruments, the better the results. A hearing test is important. Contact a hearing instrument specialist.

The monumental community arts project is presented by CitizensFirst Credit Union with project partners, the Paine Art Center and Gardens, Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, and Grand Opera House. The media partner is the Oshkosh Northwestern, and Bergstrom Automotive is a major sponsor. Local businesses, organizations and people funded the transformations of each nutcracker, and more than sixty artists participated.

The whimsical and extraordinary Nutcrackers that appeared at local businesses this past holiday season will soon be "back on the town" as the culmination of the community arts project. Four-dozen lifesize Nutcrackers will be displayed in Opera House Square Friday, September 7th through the early afternoon of Saturday, September 8th. Then, they will move to the Grand Opera House to be auctioned off, raising funds for the arts in Oshkosh.

Paul and Loa Fergot were married on September 5, 1942 at the First Untied Methodist Church in Neenah, W. Soon after, Paul began his training to be a B-24 Navigator in the Army Air Corps. During his months of training, Loa followed him from post to post, finding lodging and work to allow her and Paul brief opportunities to keep the flame of their young marriage alive. After many bombing missions in WWII, Paul's plane was shot down over Italy where he was sheltered for three months by an Italian family; during this time, Loa didn't know It he was alive or dead. After eventually becoming a German POW, he returned home to his bride to start their life together in Oshkosh. Paul completed his degree in mechanical engineering and retired as Chief Engineer and Plant Manager from Appleton Mills; Loa worked for Congressman Bill Steiger as Office Manager of his Oshkosh office. Paul and Loa have been active in their church and their community throughout their lives. and choked her personal assistant in a New York City hotel room. Manning was arraigned Friday after an early morning fight the day before with assistant Holliann Hartman inside the Dream Hotel in Chelsea. Manning is charged with misdemeanor assault. She spent more than 24 hours locked up before being released. Manning, 33, is best known for playing Eminem's ex-girlfriend in the 2002 movie "8 Mile." Her lawyer, Joseph Tacopina, said Manning and the assistant got into a confrontation but it was not an assault. He says it was "a little misunderstanding between the two!' Manning is due back in court Nov. 13.

Weapons charges dropped in Madonna case A New York City judge has dismissed weapons charges against a former firefighter who was arrested outside Madonna's apartment building two years ago. Police say Robert Linhart parked his SUV outside the Material Girl's Central Park West apart ment, laid out a tarp and spray-painted poster boards with love notes. One said "Madonna, I need you!' Another read, "Tell me yes or no. If it's yes, my dream will come true. If it's no, I will go!' Manhattan state Supreme Court Judge Analisa Torres ruled Friday that police improperly seized a knife and an ice pick from Linhart when they arrested him. A resisting-arrest charge is still pending. Linhart's lawyer said Linhart maintains his innocence.

Bank to address glitches BMO Harris works on conversion issues By PAUL GORES pgores@journalsentinel.com

BMO Harris Bank continues working out bugs stemming from the conversion of the M&I Bank system to BMO's technology. The bank said Monday that some businesses were unable to make direct deposits of wages into employee accounts because of a "processing issue." "We sincerely apologize to those affected, and our bankers are working with employers on alternative payment solutions," BMO spokesman Jim Kappel said. "Any adverse impacts will be fully addressed." Milwaukee's M&I was the biggest bank based in Wisconsin before Toronto's BMO Financial Group acquired it last year. The M&I Bank system was converted to BMO Harris' over the Columbus Day weekend. The switch immediately caused problems for some customers who couldn't get access to their online accounts and had long waits when they called a customer service number for help. A help number listed on BMO Harris Bank's Facebook page was answered Monday afternoon by a recorded message stating the bank was "experiencing very high call volumes" and that the hold time to talk with a banker "may be extremely long." The recorded message suggested calling back later. Madison resident Joe Kremer said when he tried to log onto his BMO account Sunday night to pay some bills and couldn't get in, he called the help number. "After 45 minutes on hold, I just gave up. It was just insanity," he said. Kremer said he eventually found a way to reset his password on BMO Harris' website. BMO Harris said online banking is working as it should, but acknowledged delays for those seeking personal help over the phone. "Our call centers are continuing to spend more time walking customers, who are logging in for the first time, through the customer authentication process," Kappel said. "While this has increased wait times, it does protect the security of customer information. We have continued to increase the number of bankers in the call centers, which is helping to improve wait times and will further continue to improve. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank our customers for their understanding." On BMO Harris' Facebook page, customers apparently have been able to make contact with the bank for help with their online accounts. The bank has responded to many who complained, asking them to send a private message to the bank and to include a phone number at which they could be reached. The integration of M&I into the BMO Harris system was the largest ever for the bank. The bank has said it was tested extensively by experienced professionals before it was launched Oct. 9.

How much fun can one man have?

year-old daughter Selina on her first turkey hunt. Selina is my best friend and one heck of a hunting and fishing partner.

myself howled at the moon. I turned fifty in July and cannot remember a thing since that night. I blame that on Ryan Moll getting

The annual Mississippi River duck hunt which was my 40th year and I am now officially the old timer on that adventure. Fire slept, my shooting sucked and my daughter Selina was a steady partner in the canoe.

Hello friends, It is Christmas week. I have a whole bunch of people staying at my house, and for over two decades now, I am going to write my year in review story so I can stay home.

I also ran bear, baits for 100 days, which is why I am still driving a 96 Chevy pickup. I spent all my upgrade cash on bait and gas!

Let me see here, I had a ton of fun with' my buddies from the Cumberland (Paul Bucher and company) area fishing crappie on Big Chetac near Birchwood. We stay in a cabin, fish in shanties, eat well and laugh a lot. If memory serves me right, I winter camped with a very pretty lady in 26 below temperatures. That vixen from Sparta, handled conditions splendidly! In February I headed down to Texas with three of my pals for a warm weather reprieve while hog hunting. Deep snow covering the highways in Oklahoma, and everything in camp being frozen, created life long memories. In March I went on one final winter camping and ice fishing trip with my 22-year-old stepson Kevin Dushek, to a honey hole near Alma on the Mississippi River.

REAS.

We caught lots of fish and now Kevin resides in Alaska. Seems like everyone I take winter camping, disappears.

er!

It was like the first week in April that I fished on the Fox River at Depere for walleye. The walleye have to be 28-inches to keep. I caught a 29-incher and let it go. It was back in April that I took my ten(ZIN

November is pretty much about deer camp and The Red Brush Gang! If this country ever gets into a scary war, my recommendation would be to clone the Red Brush Gang and give 'em guns and explosives. There will be an unconditional surrender by our enemy within days!

It takes some energy to pull this sled

Did I do anything fun in May? I do something fun everyday, that's why I have millions of friends, a pretty senorita, and lots of trophies on the wall, what the heck else could a man want (money is over rated)? In May, I headed over to Birch Point Resort in Chippewa County and fished sumo gills on Marsh Miller Lake. Great fishing brings me back every spring. Enjoying a shot of Blackberry Brandy with Birch Point owner Paul Maire is lots of fun as well. In June the Canada Gang headed up to Shultz Lake for our annual fly-in getaway. Selina is my fishing partner and we kicked butt on 11 out of 16 fishing bets and that is with a group of eight (the guys wanted me to mention that). I caught the biggest walleye of my life, which surpassed the 31-inchmark and several of the nights the Moll boys, my brother Mike, and

married on the same day. If I have to retire early, talk to the Molls! In August, a dark cloud came over my life as well as many other peoples. My golden retriever "Ice" was diagnosed with a form of lymes disease, that there is no vaccination for and the cure rate is very low. Ice passed away in my arms, which created a chain reaction of sorrow and extenuating circumstances. At the time, "Fire" was only 8 months old and Ice meant everything to her. Like myself, Fire went into a depression but hers was very difficult on her and took away all desire for hunting, swimming or any form of training.
