What to ask your florist One of the first things that a bride envisions with her wedding is her bouquet. Although she really can’t describe what she wants, she KNOWS it. Flowers are the part of the wedding that add romance yet get a bad rap as being an expensive waste. Plan carefully!

Before, you visit your florist, there are a couple of things that you should do:

allow the florist some latitude in purchasing. Asking for a “spring look” may be less expensive than specific spring flowers, thus allowing the florist to use less costly flowers. Also allow you florist to substitute in case your flowers should arrive damaged and they need to use something else. Remember, less is more!

1. Go through magazines or online for pictures of flowers that you like. Even if the arrangement of the flowers or the color isn’t quite what you want, print it, make a notation in the corner and place it in your “florist” file. Pinterest is a great resource for wedding flowers and you may place them right on your own electronic board. 2. Select your wedding date, d ceremony and reception venues venues. If you live in an area where your florist is high demand you may reserve the fl florist for your date then make an appointment appoint to select the flowers once you h have made a few more decisions. 3. Select the colo colors/theme of your wedding and have fab fabric swatches, if possible.

Once you have established your wedding budget, set aside something for flowers. They can be 5-10% of your total budget, depending upon how important they are to you.

Ideas for that “WOW” Factor When planning your reception, couples want that “WOW” factor, that moment when guests walk into a venue and are speechless. This should not only be a visual moment, but also the sounds should be pleasing and the aromas should beckon guests to enter the room. We have often said, when planning your wedding there are a few rules to follow: 1. Determine and stay within your budget – Simplicity, flexibility, and creative planning can make any budget work. 2. Determine your priorities and stick with them – if you are a “foodie” then funnel more of your budget there. If you love to dance, then build your wedding around that. Your wedding should reflect who YOU are as a couple, not something that you’re not. 3. Your wedding should make your guests feel welcome. See to their comfort. Following those rules, you may build your reception. Begin with a gathering which lasts about an hour. This time affords the wedding party to finish photography and the guests mingle with family and friends. Always have some sort of refreshment, even as simple as punch with cookies. Again, you want to welcome your guests, and they are typically a little hungry and this may balance any alcohol that is served. Background music should be at a volume where conversation may be held without difficulty and fitting to the tastes of your guests. To further add a “change of pace” to your reception, the cocktail party is a great time to showcase so special performers such as ethnic dancers, magicians, special musicians, etc. Following cocktails guests may be ushered into the dining area, if it is in a separate space. Again, the senses may be assailed with lighting, the arrangement of the room, the centerpieces and other décor, the aroma of flowers and their dinner as it’s about to be served.

Sweet Water Floral & Event Planning

Once guests have been “seated and greeted”, then dinner service should begin promptly. Careful planning with your Wedding Planner and Site Coordinator will outline the flow of your evening. Another piece of the “WOW” is the food. It should be the best quality you can afford. Even on a buffet, it should be artfully displayed. Staff should be readily available in case a guest should have questions or a dietary concern. A good plan to follow is that every half hour, something at your reception should change. Nothing should drag. Lighting is a very important part of this and can alter the mood from moment to moment, especially when coordinated with your music.

Be creative! The music may be changed to something “upbeat” to encourage guests to find their seats, then fade away as guests are greeted, only to return softly during the meal.

One last piece of advice - Have someone photograph the ballroom from several angles before the guests arrive, as the bride and groom rarely see it completed after all of their hours of planning. They will appreciate it later.

The $9 million brewery in southeast Verona has been under construction for three months, but only in the past week has the construction become obvious to passers-by. Wisconsin Brewing Company CEO Carl Nolen said Monday the building is on track for a July 15 opening and that he hopes to allow visitors to watch as the massive brewing equipment is installed and commissioned over the following two months. Already, the company has made its first batch of beer at the Great Dane, and it plans several more batches over the next few months. There will not be one at Hometown Days, however, as had been previously suggested.

Spring Sports Guide 2013 Boys tennis

Sectional move helps state chances JEREMY JONES Sports editor

Verona boys tennis hasn’t reached the WIAA Division 1 state team tennis tournament since making threestraight trips from 2002-04 – in large part because of the Middleton Cardinals, who have advanced to state in eight of the past 12 years. Finally able to get out of the same sectional as Middleton this season, the Wildcats are optimistic they could finally break their nine-year drought this year. Verona finished three points behind Middleton after the subsectional and sectional points were tallied to determine which team advanced to team state last year. If Verona is able to punch their ticket to the state team tournament, it will do so behind the strength of five seniors. “We also have a lot of seniors on the team who are set on getting to team state this year,” Verona head coach Rick Engen said. “They are planning on putting their mark on the program and adding a conference and sectional championship on our accomplishment board.” After playing at No. 2 singles for the past three seasons, senior Andrew Argall finally gets his shot at taking over as the Wildcats top player this year following the graduation of Alex Boomgarden. A Big Eight Conference as well as sectional champion, who won 25 matches last season, Argall is a three-time individual state qualifier. Boomgarden, who earned a 10-16 seed at last season’s individual state tennis tournament, went on to the round of 16. He is now playing two singles and one doubles at Carthage College in Kenosha. Argall, meanwhile, won a match before falling in a highly contested second round match against 10-16 seed Jake Humphreys of Kenosha Tremper. Despite being one of the top players in the area, Argall is one of only few who spends his offseason doing something other than hitting a tennis ball. Argall instead opted to play guard for the Wildcats boys basketball team the past three seasons where he secured second-team Big Eight

Having improved a lot since last year, Engen said, sophomore Nolan Fink will open this season in place of the graduated McLean. Seniors Alex Hadjiev and Austin Gerdes take the courts at No. 2 doubles. “Both Alex and Austin have worked hard to compete this year,” Engen said. Verona’s girl’s track and field team cracked the top 10 as a program at last year’s WIAA Division 1 state meet, tying Waukesha West and New Richmond for 10th place behind the strength of the team’s relay. Head coach Mark Happel, who said last season’s squad was “a once in a lifetime team to coach,” still expects plenty from this year’s team, however. Verona returns 18 letterwinners, but lost 14 from last season, including middle distance standout Kayla Anderson, who took seventh in the 800-meter run. Also lost from a year ago is Tyler Henderson, who finished 10th in the triple jump and 19th in the 100-meter hurdles. Karli Bryant took 18th in the discus, while Verona tied New Richmond and Waukesha West for 10th place with 19 points. “We have good nucleus of talented and hard working athletes,” Happel said. Verona returns half of its 4x100 relay, which finished fifth last season with sophomore Shannon Kerrigan and junior Lexy Richardson coming back. Ashley Bartow and Lauren O’Brien have since graduated. Besides being a key relay clog, O’Brien also tied for 16th in the high jump. A year removed from sending all four relays to the state medal podium, senior

Senior Brian Davenport (246), who gave up hockey in favor of tennis, saw his season end at sectionals where he finished second to Middleton sophomore Joey Niesen at 3 singles. year, steps up to 3 singles. Like Davenport, Rudnitzky (24-7) saw his season close at sectionals, taking second place to Middleton junior Tyler Markel. Spending another summer training in Germany, Rudnitzky figures to be one of several Wildcats vying for at least a conference title this season. Also in the hunt will be Verona’s top doubles team. Seniors James Schad (8-6) played

Last season ended a bit prematurely for the Verona girls soccer team with a WIAA sectional semifinal loss to eventual state champion Madison West. With a Big Eight Conference title (8-0-1, 13-5-2 overall) and its fourth straight regional title, the Wildcats had hopes of making it back to the Division 1 state tournament for the first time since 2010, when they won the school’s first girls soccer title. This season proves to be a little different with a much younger team, but head coach Jennifer Faulkner said that the returners are all ones with lots of minutes and experience on varsity. “We are hoping that the

Pitching depth, defense keys with inexperienced bats Anthony Iozzo Assistant sports editor

Two years removed from a WIAA Division 1 state appearance, the Verona baseball team looks to improve on an 11-17 overall record (5-13 Big Eight Conference). The Wildcats, much like their 2011 state run, looks to rely on pitching this season, although head coach Brad D’Orazio said most of the arms are young and inexperienced. “We don’t return a lot of at bats from last season so we will have to learn to adjust to varsity pitching,” D’Orazio said. “We hope to play solid defense and rely on the depth of our pitching to keep us close in games.” Some of the key returners to the mound will be senior Derek Witte (1-3, two saves, 28 strikeouts), senior Trevor Kermicle (4-0, one save, 33 strikeouts) and junior John Moynihan (1-1, 4.20 ERA). D’Orazio said Witte is “very dominant when he is on and throwing strikes,” while Kermicle was an honorable mention All-Big Eight Conference pitcher last season. Nick Phillips also has experience

Young team looks to stay on track TRAVIS SARANDOS

Unified Newspaper Group

The Verona boys track and field team enters the outdoor portion of their season as a young team with high hopes to succeed in the highly-competitive Big Eight Conference. The Wildcats have several spots to fill from a year ago, especially in the sprint events. Tyler Parker, a firstyear track and field athlete a year ago, ran to fifth place in the 200- and 12th in the 100-meter dash. Parker is now playing football at Minnesota State Mankato. Also having graduating following last season are: David Danaher, Jake Hauser and Devan Daniels, who helped Parker raced to 19th place in the 4x100. Talent at top looks to keep Wildcats on course ANTHONY IOZZO Assistant sports editor

Seniors Tyler Reinecke, Caleb Baltes and Matt Feller have been standouts on the Verona boys golf team the last few years, and they are expected to once again lead the Wildcats this season. But with the graduation of Matt Opsal, the battle for No. 4 and No. 5 will be won by younger, inexperienced golfers this season. “We have three of the better players in the conference, but there isn’t much experience after them,” head coach Jon Rebholz said. “We have

and four assists. Defensively, Verona returns junior Maddie Hankard, senior Carissa Kolpek, junior Gabby Douglas and junior Becky Schultz, who also played midfield last season. Senior Sarah Schoeberle looks to switch between midfielder and defender this season. Standout defenders Claire Melin and Megan Hanson graduated last year. Senior Carly Juzwik looks to replace Dylan Haller in the net.

The returning letterwinners for the Verona Area High School girls track and field team (front, from left) are: Allison Barton, Hannah Semmann, Nikki Zimbrick, Nicole Witthuhn and Nicole Noltemeyer; (middle) Shannon Kerrigan, Hannah Miller, Katy Miller, Jenni LaCroix, Aylise Grossenbacher-McGlamery and Erica Higgins; (back) Jordan Bartholf, Ogi Ifediora, Jamie Hintz, Lexy Richardson, Nichole Bathe, Karen Wong and Erin Seliger.

Girls track: 18 girls return to track this season Katy Miller, Kerrigan and Richardson give the Wildcats three-fourths of last season’s fifth-place 4x200 relay. Junior Jenni LaCroix and Miller also return on the 4x400 relay, which finished third overall in 3:56.20. Seeded sixth overall entering the final event on Saturday, the Verona quarter shaved well over five-and-ahalf seconds to finish a team-best third overall in the 4x4. “We lost some amazing athletes on the 4x4 relay from last year (Bartow and Anderson), but we have some tremendous talent returning and expect to be very competitive in all relays at the

state level,” Happel said. Of the influx of new talent, Happel said this season is the most talent sprint core he’s had to work with at Verona. Both the 4x2 and 4x4 relays earned spots as All-State relays, finishing with one of the top six times in all three divisions. Miller, who broke the 300 hurdle school record at conference, came up two spots shy of the finals, taking 12th. The Wildcats’ sixth-place 4x800 relay, welcomes back sophomore Erica Higgins and LaCroix, who also ran to a 19th-place finish in the 400 dash. The Big Eight will once again be

loaded with talent far beyond Verona, including Maggie Slatter, Allison Funk and Ashley Pohlmann of Janesville Craig, Sun Prairie’s Allissa Nelson, Abby Fabris, Kamry Gipson and Tierney Lindner, Middleton’s Hanna Docter, Madison La Follette’s Kanesha Freiberg, Madison West’s Olivia Pratt and Hannah Lucas of Madison Memorial. Sun Prairie, Middleton, Janesville Craig, Madison Memorial, Madison La Follette and the Wildcats should all contend for the title. The Wildcats first home meet at newly renovated Curtis Jones Stadium will be 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 against Madison West.

Boys track: Dietlin, Queoff lead small group of seniors Continued from page 12 Wildcats to a second-place finish in the wheelchair competition, also moved on to college. Returning senior captains Sean Happel and Dietlin lead a group of eight seniors that are returning for the Wildcats, their smallest group of seniors in a decade. “We’re very young this season,” said head coach Joff Pedretti, who is in his eighth season as the Wildcats coach. Verona returns two allconference performers from last year; Dietlin in the pole vault and high jump and junior Adam Stiner in discus. Dietlin was a state qualifier in the high jump last year and also medaled in the triple jump at the conference meet. He notched the Wildcats’ lone point in the high jump at the W/TFA State Indoor Championships on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Other returning conference medalists include

senior Steven Queoff in the high jump, junior Steven Hartnett in the hurdles and sophomore Ryan Nameth in the 1600. With so few seniors on the team, Pedretti is hoping the Wildcats get some big contributions from newcomers and younger athletes this spring. “We’ve been really pleased with (first year sophomore sprinter) Collin Griffin,” Pedretti said. “I think that he could do some nice things for us this year.” Pedretti also said he’s been impressed by the early season performances of sophomore sprinter Cameron Tindall and junior middistance runner Alex Anderson. “With a young team, you always have guys come out of nowhere and do something for you,” he said. The Big Eight is always a very competitive conference, and it looks to be especially strong this spring. Janesville Craig topped the conference championships last year and return

most of its key athletes. Middleton and Madison LaFollette also have strong teams this spring. Those teams are so loaded right now,” Pedretti said. “Even Madison Memorial looks good. They’ve got arguably the best sprinter and the best hurdler in the state.” Verona had finished in the top two at the conference meet every year since 1997, Pedretti’s senior year as a Wildcat, before a thirdplace finish in the Big Eight broke the streak last year. The Wildcats are still the only school to finish in the top half of the conference

standings every year since joining the Big Eight five years ago. “We’re always in the mix, and I think not every team can say that. So we definitely take pride in that,” Pedretti said. With the indoor season behind them, the Wildcats will look to continue to improve as they head outdoors, The Wildcats have a dual meet against Janesville Craig this Tuesday, then against Janesville Parker the following Tuesday. Both meets will be held at Monterey Stadium in Janesville.

talented enough kids to fill the gap, though, and we should be pretty strong conferencewise.” Verona finished tied for fifth at sectionals last season, 10 strokes from state. Reinecke was a secondteam All-Big Eight Conference player last year with a 78 stroke average in 18 holes after being named Conference Player of the Year in 2011. Reinecke is looking to make state for the first time since his freshman year. Baltes, an honorable mention all-conference honoree, sported a 79 stroke average in 18 holes last year. He and Reinecke were also named to the Academic AllState squads. Feller returns after earning an 82 stroke average in 18 holes. After those three, however, there is much to be learned still. Two juniors look to potentially fill the last varsity spots. John Tackett and Riley Schmitz finished with an 85 and an 89 stroke average, respectively, on junior varsity in 2012. After them, there are 10 freshman making their high

school debuts. Rebholz said it will be important for the seniors to set examples and teach the younger guys the ropes, since they will be taking over the program in 2014. “Hopefully, they will soak in what they can, and we will be good to go next year.”

Conference outlook Rebholz does not expect a drop off from last season meaning the Wildcats 97-2 Big Eight) will be in contention for a regular season and conference tournament title. But so are Madison Memorial, Middleton and Beloit Memorial, with Janesville Craig and Janesville Parker as sleepers. Memorial is led by Peter Webb and John Springer, while Middleton is led by Michael Wiebe. Kolton Kelly leads Beloit. Some important duals are: vs. Janesville Parker and Madison La Follette (2:30 p.m. April 17), at Janesville Craig and Madison Memorial at Odana Hills Golf Course (2:30 p.m. April 23), and at Beloit Memorial and Middleton at Krueger Haskell Golf Course (at 2:30 p.m. May 1). The conference tournament is set fort 8 a.m. May 16 at Evansville Golf Club.

The Wildcats look to repeat its conference championship from a year ago, but they will need to solve Madison West, which returns much of its 2012 state championship team. Madison Memorial and Middleton, other teams

Faulkner said usually give Verona fits on the field, are expected to be younger. “It is going to be a tough conference,” she said. “West is in a difficult position. It has to defend its title, and everyone else is after them.” The season begins at 5 p.m. April 11 against Sun Prairie at Badger Ridge Middle School. S o m e other games of note include: at Hartland Arrowhead (6:30 p.m. April 12), at Madison Memorial (7 p.m. April 25), vs. Middleton (5 p.m. April 30), vs. Oregon (5 p.m. May 7), vs. Madison Edgewood (5 p.m. May 10) at Madison West (7 p.m. May 14) and vs. Waunakee ( 5 p.m. May 21). The goal is to raise as much as $6,000 for the club. “We know funding these programs is difficult, and we want

rectangular toggle, or “rocker” switches—appropriate for an audio system—with push buttons in the middle. The right toggle operates volume. Press the top of the toggle, and the stereo gets louder. Press the bottom, and it gets quieter. Pushing the button in the center switches between modes; AM, FM, and media if you want to listen to an external player. The left toggle changes the station when you’re in radio mode: Press the top to go up the dial and down to go the other way. Hitting the button takes you up to the next preset station. When you’re in media mode, you toggle up to skip to the next track and down to go back. So, pretty intuitive. The audio control buttons are on the spokes of the wheel, a few inches from the wheel itself. Station settings and other information appear on a screen in the dash just below the heating vents. The dash also has the full complement of push-button controls, along with a knob with toggles to perform all the usual programming functions. Hendrix said the wheel-mounted controls are standard on most 2013 models.

Just when it seemed as if automakers had tried everything to make controlling a car radio easy—push buttons, toggle switches, rotating knobs, touch screens, voice commands—Fiat came up with another option: Buttons and toggles—but on the back of the steering wheel. “They’re at the three and nine positions, right where your hands are going to be,” said Ted Hendrix, new car sales manager for PALMEN Fiat in Kenosha. “You don’t have to look down or at the dash.” Or even lift a finger. One user was quoted by Motor Trend magazine as calling the positioning of the buttons “a smart use of otherwise wasted space.” A video posted on YouTube by Fiat USA says the location of the buttons “lets you manage the audio system without ever having to take your hands off the wheel.” The mechanism consists of two

GM holds line on pickup prices General Motors has announced that base prices for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks will not increase from 2013 models. The fuel-economy ratings and performance figures for the two trucks also will stay the same for 2014.

Production begins this summer for the 2014 Silverado regular cab pickup, which will include the more powerful EcoTec3 engine, as well as a new interior and more. The new GMC Sierra also will be available later this year with the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V-8 engine.

■ Toyota plans shift in battery systems: Toyota will replace current state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery systems by 2020, first with “solid state” batteries that it says will be three to four times more powerful, followed in several years by “lithium air” batteries that, pound for pound, would offer a fivetimes increase for systems of the same weight. Nickelmetal-hydride Toyota has steadfastly used nickel-metalbatteries have hydride battery tech in its hybrids, but the company is looking at new solid-state been the mainstay technology. in Toyota’s lineup for years, says car news Web site Autoblog. Newer solidstate and lithium-air batteries have advantages over li-ion and nickel-metal, being smaller and using less expensive and fewer rare-earth elements. Solid states are so named for replacing the liquid electrolyte from lithium-ion batteries with solid material that’s more compact and stable, says Toyota official, Shigeki Suzuki.

SNEAK PEEK AT ELECTRIC

Shift points ■ Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn says the prospects for the commercial production of hydrogenpowered vehicles do not look good. It’s nearly impossible to build such vehicles at a “reasonable” cost, Winterkorn told auto industry journal, Automotive News. He didn’t define a reasonable cost. ■ Still obviously a believer in the electric car company he co-founded, Henrik Fisker’s first act after leaving Fisker Automotive Inc. in mid-March was to buy one of the company’s Karma models with his own money. “I don’t get a free car because I walked away,” he said. ■ Volkswagen will bump up the introduction of its Golf plug-in hybrid by a full year, reports Britain’s Autocar. The Golf Mk7 Plug-in Hybrid, now set for a 2014 launch, will combine a 140-horsepower gasoline engine with a 100-horsepower electric motor to deliver a claimed fuel economy equivalent of 188 mpg.

■ Detroit Electric rises, phoenix-like: An old name is returning the Motor City to manufacture a line of new electric sports cars, reports The Detroit News. Detroit Electric, formerly an electric-vehicle maker in the 1900s, plans to bring 180 jobs to Metro Detroit by the end of the year and will produce a pure electric sports car beginning in August 2014. The company, non-existent for about 70 years before being revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, former Group CEO of the Lotus Engineering group and executive director of Lotus Cars of England, will set up its headquarters in the famous Fisher Building. The production facility, whose location in Metro Detroit will be announced in April, will have an annual capacity of 2,500 units.

■ 2012 fuel economy highest ever: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says “major increases” in the efficiency of the vehicles Americans drive are reducing oil consumption and cutting carbon emissions. Between 2007 and 2012, fuel-economy values increased 16 percent while carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions dropped 13 percent; and 2012 alone saw a one-year increase of 1.4 mpg for cars and trucks. The EPA notes 2012 CO2 emissions fell to 374 grams per mile, and an increase in average fuel economy to 23.8 mpg. Compared to 2008, buyers have twice as many hybrid and diesel vehicle choices, a growing set of plug-in electric vehicle options, and a six-fold increase in the number of car models with combined city/highway fuel economy of 30 mpg or higher.

5

■ Refreshed Optima Hybrid gets more power, space: Kia has updated its 2013 Optima Hybrid powertrain, improving both performance and efficiency with more torque and a larger electric motor. “Numerous” powertrain refinements reportedly add smoothness and drivability to the four-door sedan. The 2013 Optima Hybrid also has more trunk space than before through a repackaged battery pack. The hybrid builds on the gasoline-powered Optima, adding improved aerodynamics and user lighter-weight components. Lighter and more aerodynamic 16- and 17-inch wheels reduce weight and drag. Extensive use of aluminum instead of steel for the lower front and rear suspension helps offset the added weight of the hybrid components.

The Detroit Electric name will be attached to a new electric sports car in 2014. There are no specifications or pricing yet.

The Optima Hybrid comes in for some key upgrades that will allow the electric motor to assist the gas engine more often.

2008 Sedan

H

ISTORY

T

HE GOOD STUFF

H

EADS UP!

Honda has been selling its mid-size Accord since 1976, with style, content and power upgrades occurring about every five years. The seventh-generation sedans and coupes appeared for the 2008 model year and were roomier and quicker than their predecessors. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine produced 177-190 horsepower, while high-line Accords came with the 268-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. A five-speed manual transmission and a five-speed automatic were available in all four-cylinder sedans and coupes, while the V6 coupe could be ordered with a six-speed manual gearbox (the gas/electric Accord Hybrid was dropped from the lineup.) Right on schedule, the eighth-generation Accord models arrived for the 2013 model year.

The Accord continues to be a top-seller and for good reason. Attention to detail combined with smooth-running engines and one of the best manual shifters on the market makes it easy to see why these vehicles are so popular. For this particular generation, both front and rear seats were comfortable and supportive, leg room was generous and the relatively low beltline and tall glass area provided excellent visibility. Accord also earned top marks for its sophisticated suspension that provided a comfortable ride and sure-footed handling on a variety of road surfaces. Sporty two-door V6 Accord coupes had exclusive rights to the six-speed manual transmission.

You’ll find few complaints about these automobiles from the legions of loyal and devoted Accord owners. The few minor concerns focused on road noise leaking into the cabin and brake wear. Beyond that, some long-time Accord owners have complained that the car’s overall length made it seem too large, a condition corrected by Honda for its smaller new-for-2013 edition. Note that V6 models, although smooth and powerful, are much harder on gas than their four-cylinder counterparts.

VER ALL

V

ITALS

Provided you can get your hands on a clean, low-miles version, the Accord makes a virtual can’t-miss as a usedcar buy. Both the coupe and sedan are a joy to drive, whether on a busy freeway or snaking through a twisty two-lane. For the money, a safer, more comfortable or reliable car will be hard to find. Others in the Accord’s class include the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata and Ford Fusion.

Rough shifting in heat and on hills could be transmission problem

Dear Tom and Ray: I live in the San Francisco Bay area and love my 2003 Nissan Maxima. It works fine, except for a problem we began to experience last summer. On a trip to Las Vegas in hot weather, the car began to shift into third gear very roughly when we started climbing into the mountains. The temperature was in the high 90s, and the engine temperature went up, though not to the danger level. When the car shifted back into fourth, again, the shifting was very rough. On returning home, I brought it to the dealer. They could not find any problem, but we changed the transmission fluid, which was needed. We had the same problem going to Arizona a month later. High temperature, high altitude and a steep grade brought on the problem. Everything has been fine since then, until we went to Los Angeles. The same problem occurred when crossing the Grapevine in 100-degree weather. We can’t duplicate the problem for the dealer, since the weather is always cool, and we live near sea level. No one seems to know what is causing the problem or even where to look. If I get on the freeway here, I can floor the car, and it shifts smooth as silk. We’re going to Arizona again soon. Can you help? -- Jim TOM: Yes, we can help. We’re attaching the names of rental car agencies near you, Jim. RAY: It sounds to me like a transmission problem. And while it’s happening only in hot weather on hills now, it’s likely to start happening at other times sooner or later. TOM: Going up steep hills in hot weather is when you put the greatest amount of stress on your transmission. Well, steep hills, hot weather and two mothers-in-law in the back seat. But generally speaking, that’s when a transmission is under the greatest load and is working the hardest. So, if something is wrong, that’s when you’re first likely to see it. RAY: It could be something relatively easy to fix, like a lazy solenoid, a sticky valve or a software issue that can be solved by re-flashing your transmission computer. Or it could be the

proverbial beginning of the end for this transmission. We don’t know. TOM: If you don’t want to rent a car for your hot-weather trips and you’re reluctant to spend a lot of money on exploratory transmission surgery at this point, I’d have a mechanic install an auxiliary transmission cooler for you. That’ll cost you a couple of hundred bucks. RAY: An auxiliary transmission cooler essentially is a small radiator that lowers the temperature of the transmission fluid. It’s often used by vehicles that tow things, because towing is very similar to climbing steep hills in that it puts an extra load on the transmission and makes it run hot. TOM: If you’re lucky, and you’ve led a good, clean life, that’ll keep the transmission temperature low enough to prevent the problem from occurring. At least for a while. RAY: Like we said, though, at some point, this probably will start happening in lower temperatures and on gentler hills. Good thing you don’t have any hills in San Francisco, right, Jim? TOM: So keep in mind that even if our suggestion works, in all likelihood, you’ll still need more serious transmission repair -or replacement -- at some point down the line. Tom and Ray share secrets on how you can save tens of thousands of dollars on your cars over the next 20 years in their pamphlet “Should I Buy, Lease, or Steal My Next Car?” Send $4.75 (check or money order) to Next Car, P.O. CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned

Great new cars make great pre-owned cars

When buying a pre-owned car, truck, SUV or crossover, here’s a recipe that guarantees success. First, consider vehicles that rate well in quality surveys. Lincoln, for example, was the top domestic brand and third-highest ranked in the 2013 J.D Power and Associates Vehicle Dependability Study. Ford was the second-highest brand ranked in a recent Strategic Vision Inc. survey in which consumers rate the overall quality of the vehicles they purchased. Next read and research the vehicle that best meets your needs. Whether you are looking for high gas mileage, abundant safety features, comfort, roominess, industry-leading telemetrics or a host of other factors, this will be an extremely personal decision. Finally, seek out a vehicle that has been inspected and comes with warranty coverage that is backed by the manufacturer. When you put all the factors together, you will ďŹ nd a CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned Ford or Lincoln will do a good job of meeting all of your requirements. CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned Ford and Lincolns must meet exacting standards and inspections to become a part of the program. Not all vehicles will qualify. To become Lincoln-certiďŹ ed, a pre-owned vehicle has to be the current model year or ďŹ ve previous years, and have fewer than 60,000 miles on the odometer. To become Ford-certiďŹ ed, a pre-owned vehicle has to be less than six years old and have fewer than 80,000 miles on the odometer. Lincolns then undergo a 200-point inspection by a factory-trained technician who reconditions or replaces any component that does not meet program standards.

Fords undergo a 172-point inspection that involves a factory-trained technician checking out a wide-range of factors. Any components that do not meet the program standards are reconditioned or replace with only new Ford Motorcraft or Ford Authorized replacement parts. With both Lincolns and Fords, a Vehicle History Report is obtained that shows whether service recalls and scheduled maintenance were performed and whether emissions tests were passed. These reports are available to buyers. Lincolns or Fords that qualify for the CPO program come with a comprehensive warranty coverage. For Lincolns, that coverage includes the repair or replacement of covered components for six years from the original new vehicle limited warranty start date or up to 100,000 miles, whichever comes ďŹ rst. A standard deductible applies. For Fords, that coverage includes a 12-month, 12,000 mile comprehensive limited warranty coverage and 7-year, 100,000 miles powertrain limited warranty coverage. Ask a dealer for more speciďŹ cs on warranties. Lincoln and Ford also offer complimentary roadside assistance 24-7, travel expense reimbursement of up to $500 for up to three days of lodging, mails and rental vehicle for travel expenses accrued when the breakdown occurs more than 100 miles from home, destination expense assistance of up to $75 for emergency transportation and limited rental car reimbursement. CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned Ford and Lincolns are available at Ford and Lincoln new-car dealers. Check out the special deals that are widely available, including a free three-month subscription to Sirius XM radio on cars that are so-equipped and 1.9% APR ďŹ nancing.

2010 Ford Focus

2011 Ford Fusion

Is buying a CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned Ford or Lincoln right for you? Consider these points: PRO:

CON:

• A pre-owned vehicle costs less than a new vehicle. Someone else has paid for the depreciation that occurs in the ďŹ rst few years of ownership. • To qualify as a CPO, the vehicle must meet rigorous standards and pass inspections. • A CPO vehicle comes with extended warranties, which can be unusual for a used car. • A CPO vehicle comes with roadside assistance and courtesy transportation.

• The car is not the latest model from a manufacturer, so it might not be the latest body style or color. • Technology is advancing quickly and a pre-owned vehicle might not have the latest navigation or tech features. • Each successive model year brings new safety advances. A CPO vehicle might not have the latest safety features such as backup cameras, blind-spot protection and many more. • Purchasing a used car might mean it doesn’t have as many good years ahead of it as a new car would.

2011 Lincoln MKX A variety of Ford and Lincoln models and years qualify for CertiďŹ ed Pre-Owned status.

Sheboygan: Free children’s fishing clinic. Indoctrinate your kids in the age-old sport of fishing Saturday at this free clinic at the Friends Fishing Pond in Kohler-Andrae State Park, 1020 Beach Park Lane. The class runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to children ages 15 and younger; they must bring an adult with them. They will be taught all about rod and reel fishing, from tying knots to cleaning their catch. They’ll also learn about invasive species and have the chance to try Japanese ink fish printing. (Children need to bring a T-shirt or bandanna with them if they wish to try the print project.) Refreshments will be served. Equipment is available, but fisher-folk are encouraged to bring their own. Admission to the park is free for people taking the class. Registration is requested; call (920) 451-4080. See dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/ getoutdoors/events.html. Neenah: “16th Annual Antiques Showcase and Sale.” More than 40 dealers are expected to attend this antique show Saturday and next Sunday at the TriCounty Arena, 700 E. Shady Lane, and bring with them everything a person might need to create a cozy home from a past era. Patrons will find furniture, linens, glassware and even clothing among the treasures on hand. The show is a benefit for Big Brothers Big Sisters; admission is $5 for both days. The hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Sunday. See www.bemybig.com.

50K runs and a 10K relay race for two runners. They all begin and end at the Timber Ridge Resort, 4050 Hammond Road E, Traverse City, and go through the Pere Marquette Forest. Runners can register Friday or before the races that take place Saturday. The 50K begins at 7 a.m. and the other races follow. Winners in each race get a price. The entrance fees begin at $40 and go up to $65 depending on the race. See www .enduranceevolution.com. — Roberta J. Wahlers ELSA GUILLET CHAPUIS

The play is “A Doll’s House” and the festival held Friday through next Sunday features a performance of the play using a translation by Jeffrey Hatcher, whose work is well-known to Milwaukee audiences. There also will be a lecture on Henrik Ibsen’s heroines, a costume retrospective, art, videos, and a performance of August Strindberg’s “Miss Julie.” Most of the events are free and take place at the Commonweal Theatre, 208 Parkway Ave. N, Lanesboro.
