‘Who am i to judge?’ pope says of gay priests

ABOARD THE PAPAL AIRCRAFT (AP) — A remarkably candid Pope Francis struck a conciliatory stance toward gays Monday, saying “who am I to judge” when it comes to the sexual orientation of priests. “We shouldn’t marginalize people for this. They must be integrated into society,” Francis said during an extraordinary 82-minute exchange with reporters aboard his plane returning from his first papal trip, to celebrate World Youth Day in Brazil. “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” the pope asked. Francis’ first news conference as pope was wide-

ranging and open, touching on everything from the greater role he believes women should have in the Catholic Church to the troubled Vatican Bank. While his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, responded to only a few pre-selected questions during his papal trips, Francis did not dodge a single query, even thanking the journalist who asked about reports of a “gay lobby” inside the Vatican and allegations that one of his trusted monsignors was involved in a gay tryst. Francis said he investigated the allegations against the clergyman according to canon law and found nothing to back them up. He took journalists to task for reporting

on the matter, saying it concerned issues of sin, not crimes like sexually abusing children. And when someone sins and confesses, he said, God not only forgives — he forgets. “We don’t have the right to not forget,” he said. While the comments did not signal a change in Catholic teaching that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered,” they indicated a shift in tone under Francis’ young papacy and an emphasis on a church that is more inclusive and merciful rather than critical and disciplinary. Francis’ stance contrasted markedly with that of Benedict, who signed a document in 2005 that said men who had

deep-rooted homosexual tendencies should not be priests. Gay leaders were buoyed by Francis’ approach, saying the change in tone was progress in itself, although for some the encouragement was tempered by Francis’ talk of gay clergy’s “sins.” “Basically, I’m overjoyed at the news,” said Francis DeBernardo, executive director of the U.S.-based New Ways Ministry, a group that promotes justice and reconciliation for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people and the wider church community. “For decades now, we’ve had nothing but negative comments about gay and lesbian people coming from the Vatican,” DeBer-

nardo said in a telephone interview from Maryland. The largest U.S. gay rights group, Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement that the pope’s remarks “represent a significant change in tone.” Still, said Chad Griffin, the HRC president, as long as gays “are told in churches big and small that their lives and their families are disordered and sinful because of how they were born — how God made them — then the church is sending a deeply harmful message.” In Italy, the country’s first openly gay governor, Nichi Vendola, urged fellow politicians to learn a lesson from the pope. “I believe that if politics had one-millionth of the

capacity to ... listen that the pope does, it would be better able to help people who suffer,” he said. Vendola praised the pope for drawing a clear line between homosexuality and pedophilia. “We know that a part of reactionary clerical thought plays on the confusion between these two completely different categories,” he said. Francis also said he wanted a greater role for women in the church, though he insisted “the door is closed” to ordaining them as priests. In one of his most important speeches in Rio, Francis described the church in feminine terms, saying it would be “sterile” without women.

A caller reported there was an older black colored vehicle with damage in the ditch on State Highway 70 by Sailor Lake. The caller did not see anyone around and she did not stop to see if anyone was in the vehicle or injured. A deputy responded. Later, a male subject reported the accident in question. He said he would meet with an ofﬁcer on State Highway 70 and the intersection on Riley Lake Road.

An employee of a restoration company reported that when he went to secure a vacant residence that is bank-owned, he found the residence full of medicine bottles with pills in them. The caller would like a deputy to collect the pills for safekeeping. The residence has been abandoned for over a year. An anonymous female called to report juveniles racing vehicles on Hicks Landing Road from the cranberry marsh

A female subject drove through an accident scene and her vehicle was scraped by downed electrical wires. A deputy was requested to meet with the female subject. The Eau Claire Police Department called to request assistance in locating a male subject. The subject has violated a restraining order and is suicidal and homicidal.

A caller dialed 9-1-1 to report a onevehicle accident. The caller stated the vehicle hit a pole, but the pole was still standing and the wires were up. There was one male occupant who was alert and conscious, but who had blood on his hand. The Prentice Ambulance Service, Ogema Fire Department, Price Electric Cooperative and deputies responded. A towing company responded to remove the vehicle.

EAA AirVenture 2013 set to soar into Oshkosh

Music Waterfest, the weekly Thursday night concert series at the Leach Amphitheater on the Fox River features music by Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real tonight. Opening the show will be Sly Joe and the JUMBO Smooth Operators and Brett Newski. It’s a “twofor-one” admission night, if you arrive before 6 p.m. Normal admission is $8 before 6 p.m. (so, $4 tonight), $10 before 7 p.m., and $15 after 7 p.m. Music starts at 6 p.m. at the Leach, 303 Ceape Ave. Before and after Waterfest, stroll through our historic downtown for the Oshkosh Main Street Music Festival. It runs daily and nightly Thursday through Sunday at dozens of local venues. The festival was created to showcase our thriving local music scene and will feature more than 100 musicians, artists, comedians and entertainers.

UNION THRESHEREE–The weather was a little “iffy”, but that didn’t stop the thousands who turned out for the annual Union Thresheree & National Antique Tractor Pull this weekend in Symco. The photos here were taken on Saturday afternoon as this photographer landed in Symco and tried to find a parking spot in a 20 acre field. Mission accomplished (barely). A glance to the south (top picture) saw three generations of John Deere combines harvesting grain. In order of era, a JD 30 pull-type, a JD 40 and a JD 55 (yes, we finally have an enclosed cab). Wandering through the Unionville Print Shop (my favorite stop) and who should appear??? Robert Peterson (left) of Sobieski, WI, who could talk shop with the photographer because he worked in a print shop in the 1950’s. Below, left, familiar faces were found traversing the grounds–namely Larry Joos, Dave Fritz and Ben Joos. Above, right, more familiar faces–the Miller clan from Clintonville. Tammy, Jeff, Shaye and Rainna were just heading in to watch the tractor pull when the fearless photographer stopped them long enough to pose for a picture.

CHEESY TURNOVERS 1 cup flour 1/2 cup butter, softened I package (3-ounces) cream cheese, softened 2 eggs, slightly beaten 2 cups (8-ounces) shredded Brick

cheese 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 egg white, slightly beaten 1/2 cup sesame seeds

In a medium bowl, mix flour, butter and cream cheese until well blended. Shape soft dough into a flat ball. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate about 2 hours. To Make filling, combine eggs, cheese, onion, coriander and salt until thoroughly blended. Set aside. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out 36 rounds using a 2-1/2-inch round cookie cutter. Reroll dough if necessary. Place 1 teaspoon of filling in center of each round. Fold in half and seal edges with a fork. Brush tops with egg white and dip in sesame seeds. Arrange on lightly buttered baking sheet. Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or cool. Makes 36 appetizers.

by Pat Kwallek I was watching an old movie the other night. I sometimes turn to the Turner Classic Movies because I enjoy them and because they are commercialfree. This particular night, it was a movie about the old west, when lo and behold, I saw jet trails across the background sky! It was kind of amusing. Another thing I have noticed and not liked, is the use of darkness and dark backgrounds, which must save a lot of money as compared to giving a lot of detail. This is used most often in horror films, which I otherwise like, but recently I noticed dark backgrounds in the classic, “The Brothers Karamisov”, with one of my favorites Yul Brynner. There were no dark backgrounds but instead, levity and light when your Chamber Ambassadors took their good-will coffee to the offices of Kinney, Urban and Kussmaul, first established in 1935, when Ken Orchard and Donald McIntyre formed a partnership. Patrick Kinney became a partner in 1947. Stuart Urban joined the firm in 1964, and Jack Kussmaul in 1981. All three original members have died.. Kussmaul and Urban are pleased to have added three associates who are all area men. They include Brian Muller of Dickeyville; in 2009; Dan Glass of Cassville in 2011, and Ben Wood of Fennimore in 2012. Their building dates back to 1903 and housed the Lancaster State Bank until 1959, when the law firm took over. During a lively and often humorous discussion, Jack revealed he has been involved with world-wide activities, including running the Boston Marathon, and last year, crossed the Andes Mountains on the back of a mule. Ambassador Ivars Kalnins commented that Jack used to have a rowing scull on the Wisconsin River and had floated the river in an inner tube. Jack has a beautiful home on the Wisconsin near Woodman. Stu Urban is a duck hunter of some renown, but said that Ben

Wood has taken over that sport. He has a cabin in the north and enjoys playing golf. He is originally from Rothschild, Wis. The attorneys handle “a lot of estates,” don’t do a great deal of criminal law, but have a busy practice. Stu told about his first day on the job, when McIntyre and Kinney asked him if he knew how to type, and not to “bother the secretaries.” Apparently he heeded the advice, because one of the secretaries is about to retire. Mary Gotzinger will have spent 52 years on the job.

Our coffee was held in a downstairs conferences room that houses an extensive collection of law books, some very old. The men pointed out that every law office has these old, leather bound volumes, so they probably don’t have any real value. Still, they are interesting to see and, we suspect to read. Stu noted the firm works with a lot of farm-related organizations, adding, “We have more property than people.” He said they represent two factory farms, one at Lancaster and the other outside Darlington. Dear Lancaster Area Chamber of Commerce Members and Residents of Lancaster, It’s been an interesting summer so far, to say the least. We’ve been able to host some great events here in Lancaster including the Grant County Summer Festival, where we dodged a few rain showers, and the Night on the Square, where the breeze kept the persistent heat somewhat bearable. One of the biggest questions I know that is on everyone’s minds is when is Maggie Mae coming back? Well we have some good news for Maggie’s fans. We will be welcoming Maggie Mae back on Thursday evening, August 29th at 6pm. The concert will be held at the Lancaster Memorial Park baseball diamond, the big diamond as some refer to it. We felt this venue would better accommodate the weeknight traffic. Gates will open at 5pm and you can buy tickets at the gate or in advance at the Chamber office, QueenB, or Pioneer Ag. All tickets sold from the Music on the Square event will be honored! I have to extend a huge thank you to those who helped make this year’s annual Night on the Square event a huge success. some wonderful family entertainment. In two years we will celebrate 20 years of Night on the Square. That’s not that far away and yet it seems like yesterday that I attended my first Night on the Square. Time flies and things change in Lancaster and everywhere. These constants in our life like Night on the Square, the Jaycees Fireworks, and the Grant County Fair remind us yearly of the good-ol-days. Not only that, they show us that the good-ol-days are happening right here, right now, within our families and our communities. In 20 years we’ll look back on these same days with fondness and memories of how things were, how things have changed, and how much things have stayed the same. It’s a comfort that we have in Lancaster knowing that, while things progress and change, Lancaster continues to be a great place to live, work, and raise a family. It grows with the times and yet holds on to traditions. On a side note, I recently completed the Community Leadership Alliance course and I have to say it has been one of my favorite experiences in this position so far. CLA is a collaboration of three counties, Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette, bringing leaders together from various communities to learn, teach, and expand on our leadership capabilities. One of my greatest take-aways from the experience was learning more about myself as a leader, how I function, and how my personality type factors into my work. I am a blue with some heavy green tendencies. Those of you that have taken the colors test know what that means. If you haven’t, you really should enroll in CLA and find out, as well as pick up some great skills and networks along the way. Spring is always a great time to start thinking about refreshing the look of your home. The question is, how can you get the biggest bang for your buck? When considering upgrades for your home, there are a number of things that come into play. What look do you want to achieve? Are you doing the work yourself or hiring someone to do it for you? What is your budget? Do some homework first. Look through magazines and surf the Internet for ideas. Make a board, a folder or Pinterest board of the styles and items that you would like to incorporate into your space. Making an idea board or folder for yourself, whether physical or virtual, not

It may not seem like a big thing, but changing the knobs and pulls on your cabinets is like adding a piece of jewelry — it will help make the room sparkle. When purchasing new handles and pulls, take your existing hardware with you. You may find the style you are looking for, but if the distance between the screws is off you will need to fill

the holes, refinish and redrill the holes. It’s much easier to find a style you like that will fit perfectly. The same is true for new faucets. If you will be installing new flooring Matthew Retzak suggests, “Choose durable flooring for those high traffic areas and non-slip tile for your mudroom.” If you love your island, but want to jazz it up, Sorrell Scaglione-Poelzer suggests, “Add pendant lighting for both visual appeal and added illumination for the workspace.” Matthew Retzak has a great idea for all of those electronic gadgets we all have, “Consider a charging area/organization for phones and other devices.” This will keep all of those gadgets in a central location and help get rid of that cluttered look.

Make the most of your space Optimize the space you have without major construction. An

unused attic or basement can add much needed room with out an add-on. Sorrell Scaglione-Poelzer suggests making the space into a play, media or extra bedroom. You may need to frame it out and put up walls if it’s unfinished. Add a bit of paint, lighting and some carpeting and you’re ready to start decorating. Looking to go ECO? Retzak has some places to start, “Energy efficient upgrades including windows and insulation for not only lower utility bills, but more comfort.” Enhance the storage space in your garage with locker cabinets and consider adding a functional family foyer entrance off of the garage. Just keeping things neat and contained will make these high traffic areas look fresh. Don’t stop inside, curb appeal is important as well. Some suggestions from Sorrell Scaglione-Poelzer are to add an architectural element, such as a covered entry, change the entry door and add some shutters. Retzak adds, “Consider creating outdoor rooms defined by sitting walls and adding pergolas.”

Repairing the wrath of winter

As winter fades away, the snow melts and shovels and snowblowers get stored away, attention begins to focus on the yards, patios and decks that have spent months in frigid temperatures and buried under snow.

Although spring is a welcome sight, it’s sometimes not a pretty one. Along with warmer temperatures and greening yards, the homeowner may also experience a damaged yard, a splitting deck and cracked and buckling concrete. But winter may not have been the total culprit according to local yard and decking experts. “The damage that most people are going to see in their yards

is not going to be from the winter but from last summer’s drought,” according to Missy Reinholtz of Createscape of Mukwonago. The drought may result in a spring yard with bare patches and struggling trees and shrubs. The harsh conditions of winter may have also led to snow mold and plants smothered by the ice cover. Although amateur landscapers may have different priorities for their yards, Reinholtz recommends aeration followed by fertilization as a top priority. “Aeration does a great job of breaking up the soil so that nutrients and moisture get down to the root zone of the grass,” she said. She also suggests overseeding following the aeration providing that it’s not done immediately following application of crab grass preventative. “Be sure to alter lawn maintenance,” Reinholtz added. shape in the fall, it definitely will be worse in the spring,” explained Cross. “This is a good time to inspect decks for cracking and splitting. The winter’s freeze and thaw cycles can lead to expansion and contraction of deck boards which in turn can lead to cracking, splitting and curling.”

If deck repair is needed, “the prep work is 95 percent of the battle,” Cross said. The failing finish needs to be removed, the deck sanded if needed, problematic boards replaced followed with an application of stain and re-sealer. Cross recommends a penetrating oilbased treatment. Spring inspection of yards should also include trees. “The drought caused a lot of problems to trees depending on your

soil. Fertilizing is the most important thing to do,” said Adam Seitz of Seitz Services of Little Prairie. Seitz also recommends inspecting trees for cavities and rot in addition to pruning broken limbs and limbs that are touching other trees. Temperature extremes can damage patios, driveways and walkways according to Jeff Meier of ECS by Jeff Meier, Delafield. “The worse damage we get around here is when salt

melts the ice, water gets in the cracks, re-freezes and expands causing the concrete to crack,” he explained. Frequent temperature extremes also cause cycles of heaving and lowering. The best time and most economical way to treat concrete is before there is damage according to Meier. If damage is minimal, he suggests the application of a densifier to strengthen the concrete but if there is substantial damage, Meier recommends resurfacing. “You want to resurface with a product that won’t allow moisture in the concrete,”

When to begin any needed outdoor work depends on the fickle Wisconsin weather. “Typically, deck work can be done anytime from April 1 to Thanksgiving with temperatures above 40 to 45 degrees depending on a couple of variables such as type of finish and current condition of the deck,” Cross explained. When to begin the spring yard work again depends on the weather. “The problem is that there is no exact date,” said Reinholtz. “Mother nature really sets the schedule.”

Manage pests A healthy plant is the best defense against insects and disease. Select the most pest-resistant plants suited to the growing conditions and provide proper care. Check plants regularly throughout the growing season. It is easier to control a few insects than the hundreds that can develop in a week or two. And when problems arise, look for the most eco-friendly control. Start by removing small infestations by hand. Consider traps, barriers, and natural products if further control is needed. And as always be sure to read and follow label directions carefully.

Recycle yard waste in the landscape Minimize the amount of yard waste produced, reuse what can be in other areas of the landscape and recycle the rest as compost. These are just a few strategies that will save time bagging, hauling and disposing of yard debris. And better yet, implementing this strategy will save money and time spent buying and transporting soil amendments, since it will be created right in the backyard. Start by leaving grass clippings on the lawn. The short clippings break down quickly, adding organic matter, nutrients and moisture to the soil. Grow trees suited to the growing conditions and available space. That means less pruning and fewer trimmings that will need to be managed.
