THANKS FOR SHOPPING LOCALLY 1. You kept dollars in our economy

6. You created more choice

When you purchase at locally-owned businesses, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base.

Local businesses pick the items they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for our individual market.

7. You took advantage of local expertise

Local businesses are better at creating jobs for our neighbors.

You are the friends and neighbors of local businesses, and as your friend, local businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. Local businesses are passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it?

3. You nurtured community

8. You invested in entrepreneurship

Local businesses contribute more to charities and give a town a unique character.

Entrepreneurship fuels America’s economic innovation and prosperity, and serves as a key means for families to move out of low-wage jobs and into the middle class. Plus, the success of locally-owned, independent businesses provides real-life inspiration to our young people, proving that they can stay in the area and prosper on their own terms.

2. You created local jobs

4. You helped the environment Buying from a local business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation, less packaging, and products that you know are safe and well made, because local businesses stand behind them.

5. You conserved your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less public infrastructure and more efficient use of city services, making more money available to beautify our community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— right here in your community.

9. You made us a destination The more interesting and unique we are as a community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

10. You said “Local Matters” Shopping is kind of like voting. In addition to finding the right product at the right price, where you spend your money is a vote of support for the place you spend it. 810998

TV tries again to make newspaper work see-worthy

Mirror, mirror ... As if being known as “Hump Day” wasn’t bad enough, now Wednesday will also be known as “Hag Day.” Apparently, on Wednesday — at 3:30 p.m. to be weirdly specific — women look their oldest. This “news” came out of a survey conducted by St. Tropez tanning lotion. Twelve percent of women said Wednesday is when energy levels are lowest and work-related stress levels are highest. A skin expert with St. Tropez says a weekend of late nights and boozing can take up to 72 hours to become visible on the body, which might be why Wednesdays are the day women look and feel their worst. But today is Thursday, which means it’s practically Friday. Aren’t you feeling younger already?

N

ewspapers and television generally go together like sardines and peanut butter (or sardines and ... anything. Tiny, slimy fish? Really?!?). You’d think a newsroom would be a natural setting for a television series, but the concept only worked once: “Lou Grant.” That show — which ran from 1977 to 1982 — is still the gold standard of TV series set at newspapers. Ed Asner starred in the titular role, the same character he played on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” On that sitcom, Grant was a TV news producer in Minneapolis; in “Lou Grant,” he moved to Los Angeles and got back to his roots as a newspaperman, working as the city editor for the fictitious Los Angeles Tribune. Since “Lou Grant” went off the air, television has tried a few times to set a series at a newspaper — and failed. Ironically, Mary Tyler Moore followed her co-star’s example by starring in the drama “New York News” in 1995 on CBS. It flopped. The last newspaper TV drama was “Deadline.” That show aired on NBC in 2001, starred Oliver Platt and came from no less than Emmywinning producer Dick Wolf of “Law & Order” fame. Even Platt and Wolf couldn’t make the show a hit; it was yanked off the air after just five episodes. Now NBC may be trying again, though this time, its newspaper series will be a “reality” show, not a scripted drama. (Good luck making riveting television out of three-hour discussions of water and sewer rates, which is a lot of what small-town news is all about.) NBC put out a casting call for small-town newspapers to participate in a reality television show and, according to the New York Times, “the network received more

55 and counting I wouldn’t be much of a daughter if I didn’t give a shout-out today to my parents, Richard and Jean Snyder, who are celebrating their 55th anniversary. (Besides, it’s cheaper than a gift.) Their romance blossomed — as so many do — at the Board of Trade Building in Chicago, where they both worked. They were married on Jan. 31, 1958, in Chicago and made their way north to Kenosha three years later. They would likely attribute their long union to a mutual fondness for Riesling wine, but I know the truth — it’s having multiple television sets in non-adjoining rooms. ’Cause nothing says romance like watching “Dancing with the Stars” while your spouse enjoys “Monday Night Football.”

Even after more than three decades, Ed Asner’s “Lou Grant” remains the gold standard for TV shows set at newspapers.

Kenosha News Staff

than 150 responses from newspapers across the nation. NBC executives say they’ve been inundated with all types of pitches, from newspaper editors talking about how they are struggling to survive to newspaper staffs eager to show off their talents.” That sounds like a perfect fit for “Kenosha’s most interesting daily newspaper” — in the affectionate words of longtime publisher Howard J. Brown. If we do apply, however, we are up against some stiff competition. The Pilot newspaper in Southern Pines, N.C., sent a video of its staff performing a “Call Me Maybe” parody, featuring “Gangnam Style” moves. Other entries have come

in from what NBC is calling “quirky and diverse newspapers” — including the Hungry Horse News, which is run out of a log building near an entrance to Glacier National Park in Montana. Sharon Scott, general manager of NBC News Peacock Productions, said they’re “looking for a great environment, colorful place, great characters.” While it’s tough to compete with a log cabin newspaper, we do have the largest meateating dinosaur collection in the nation and a privately owned lighthouse on the greatest of the Great Lakes — and if that’s not colorful enough, we are also located in the state where every third elected official faced a recall vote; we’re struggling to move on from Rust Belt manufacturing woes; and, in 2012, we were the first — and only — city that could claim both the Hulk and Miss America. And if that doesn’t wow ’em, I’m pretty sure we can convince Bill Guida to bust out his own “Gangnam Style” moves.
