BELOIT DAILY NEWS, Tuesday, October 21, 2014

Illinois will use 2 QBs CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — In the absence of the injured Wes Lunt, Illinois will play a pair of quarterbacks Saturday against Minnesota. Coach Tim Beckman said Monday that the Gophers (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) can expect to see both senior Reilly O’Toole and sophomore Aaron Bailey, something he believes will make their preparation more difficult. “I think that for them to prepare for two is always a little more challenging than to prepare for one,” he said. How the Illini (3-4, 0-3 Big Ten) will make that work remains to be seen, offensive coordinator Bill Cubit said. He doesn’t appear to be a big fan of the idea. “I don’t know. I’ll be honest with you — I’ve never

done it before,” Cubit said. “Both guys have pretty good qualities. We’ll figure it out.” He raised concerns about limiting his playbook to accommodate the two very different quarterbacks, O’Toole is the more traditional passer, and Bailey is the running threat. “The playbook gets really expanded for one guy,” Cubit said. “You just can’t run two plays, three plays out there. You’ve got to give the other team a little bit of credit that they’re going to come out there in defense and they’re going to have different schemes for it.” Asked whether he liked the idea of planning to play both quarterbacks, Cubit didn’t exactly endorse the idea. “If it helps us win, yeah,” he said. The team has said Lunt

is out until mid-November with a broken bone in his left leg sustained against Purdue. Cubit said Lunt is off crutches and has started some throwing. O’Toole started Illinois’ only game since, the 38-28 loss at Wisconsin. He was 12-19 for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and was sacked four times. Bailey relieved him late, with Illinois down by 24 points, and rallied the Illini for a pair of touchdowns. One he ran in himself from 29 yards. Bailey was 2-for-5 for 39 yards with an interception and ran the ball 12 times for 75 yards and the touchdown. He was Illinois’ leading rusher. The team, which has lost three straight, didn’t list either O’Toole or Bailey as the likely starter on Monday.

I’m 83 years old, learned how to belly dance yesterday, and Saturday I’m going salsa dancing with my boyfriend. But now it’s Friday. I’m hungry and hankering a good ole’ fashioned fish fry.

I’m a very busy guy, I get my GazetteXtra sports and local news on my iPhone. To make matters worse, my car just died. Now I’m on my smartphone checking car prices, rebates and lease deals. This weekend, I’ll be shopping the car lots.

withdraw a total of more than $70 billion from 401(k)s or similar retirement savings plans for non-retirement spending needs every year, according to a report published this month by the financial advisory firm HelloWallet. With traditional pensions fading into memory, and Congress considering cuts to Social Security and Medicare, many Americans working in the private sector expect their 401(k) nest eggs to guarantee financial security in their older years. But in the aftermath of the recession, increased “leakage” from 401(k)s in the form of cash-outs, hardship withdrawals and loans is worrying policymakers and retirement savings experts, who also bemoan the plans’ high fees and stubbornly low participation rates. Some are looking for ways to reform 401(k)s, or even offer innovative alternatives. One such plan has been proposed by Teresa Ghilarducci, an economics professor at The New School in New York City and an ardent critic of 401(k)s. “A good pension plan helps people accumulate

money, helps them invest money appropriately and helps people pay out your pension for life, and the 401(k) fails at all three of those dimensions,” Ghilarducci said. Her plan would require that employers deduct 2.5 percent of their employees’ pay, a contribution that businesses could match if they chose. Employee contributions would be mandatory. The money would be set aside in a fund that pays a guaranteed, modest rate of return to supplement Social Security. The return could be guaranteed by a paid fund or an insurance company, and it would be paid out after a worker retired in the form of an annuity for the rest of that person’s life. “What people put in and what they earn is what they’re going to get out, so it’s a safe and secure savings account that’s only there for retirement purposes,” Ghilarducci said. California already has moved to adopt a voluntary version of Ghilarducci’s plan that would pool contributions from privatesector workers in a stateadministered, professionally managed fund. The state is awaiting a feasibility study and a final vote by the legislature before launching it by the end of 2013.

Fall Cleaning is about preparation and heading into the winter and holiday seasons with a safer and less cluttered home. • Fire Safety & Prevention. National Fire Prevention Week falls during the week of October 5th as a reminder of the Great Chicago Fire. It is also a reminder that as we head into winter, more house fires occur than in any other season. Take some simple steps to protect your home and family. Change the batteries in your smoke detectors when you change your clocks. (Daylight savings time ends on November 2 this year. Have a practice fire drill. • Too much paper? Purge your files of any unnecessary paperwork. • Out with the outgrown. Sort through kids winter clothes and any winter sporting gear that you may have outgrown. Not only will you clear out some space, but you will also know what to be on the lookout for in the next size. • Keeping cool spaces clean. Flu season halfway through, officials say ■ But resurgence possible

in second half of season By Karen Herzog Milwaukee Journal Sentinel The worst of the flu season may be behind us. Or not. “I believe we’ve crested the peak of the A: H3N2 flu epidemic locally,” Paul Biedrzycki, director of disease control and environmental health for the Milwaukee Health Department, said Friday. Hospital emergency department visits for those with flulike symptoms have been decreasing the past two to three weeks, and for the first time this season, flu-related hospitalizations declined this week among all age groups, he said,

including infants and the elderly, who are most vulnerable to flu complications. That said, there still could be a flu resurgence in the second half of the flu season. Type B viruses sometimes hit after Type A viruses. About 67 percent of Type B viruses are covered by this year’s flu vaccine; 33 percent are not. Another Type A virus also could emerge. Flu viruses can mutate arbitrarily and quickly within a flu season, public health officials said. One influenza-related pediatric death has been reported in Wisconsin; 29 children have died nationwide, including nine last week. Only flu-related deaths of those under age 18 are required to be reported.

The government doesn’t keep a running tally of adult deaths from flu, but the flu kills an average 24,000 people across the nation each year. The predominant strain circulating the first half of this flu season—A: H3N2—is included in this year’s flu shot. But seasons dominated by A: H3N2 tend to be more severe, with a greater number of hospitalizations and deaths, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The elderly have been hit especially hard this season. Nationwide, the rate of influenza lab-confirmed hospitalizations for those 65 and older is now 82 per 100,000, “which is quite a high rate,” said Tom Frieden, director of the CDC.

State starts issuing Real IDs Gun advocates hold rally MADISON—Wisconsin is one of just 13 states that have started issuing driver’s licenses that abide by tighter federal standards. The licenses cost the same, but include stringent checks on proof of legal presence, address and identity. The Wisconsin State Journal reported drivers have to bring documents such as their Social Security card, passport and proof of address, such as a utility bill or current license. The IDs are compliant with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005, which lays out standards recommended by the 9/11 Commission. Drivers can still get regular licenses but the new IDs will be mandatory for air travel or getting into some federal buildings in a few years. The federal government has granted extensions to states that weren’t ready to start the new IDs.

MADISON—Wisconsin gun advocates joined nationwide rallies in support of gun rights. The group Wisconsin Guns Across America held a peaceful rally Saturday outside the Capitol in Madison. Capitol police spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis said an estimated 500 to 600 people showed up and there were no problems. The Facebook page for the event called it a “peaceful picketing protest.” Pictures posted on the page showed people holding signs like “Know Guns Know Freedom.” The rally is one of many slated to take place at state capitols across the country thanks to a loosely organized campaign via social media. The rallies were sponsored by the Washington D.C.-based group Political Media.

Walker rallies conservatives Governor brings message to CPAC By Bill Glauber Milwaukee Journal Sentinel OXON HILL, MD.

Gov. Scott Walker showed Saturday morning that he can play a big room filled with conservative political activists. Walker had thousands of people cheering at the Conservative Political Action Committee Conference when he said, “We have to be optimistic. We have to be relevant. And most importantly, we have to be courageous.” And then, he had them up and roaring as he declared, “In America, we take a day off to celebrate the 4th of July, not the 15th of April.” Such moments fuel speculation that Walker could be among the top contenders for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. But before entering that race, Walker faces re-election for governor in Wisconsin in 2014. And sometimes navigating the world between being a

state political leader and a national political star can get tricky. On Saturday morning, just hours before his speech, the news outlet Politico reported that Walker said he is open to a run for president. The news outlet added that the governor “pointedly declined to pledge to Walker serve a full four-year term if he’s re-elected next year.” Asked about his interest in running for president, Walker said during the interview, “Would I ever be (interested)? Possibly. I guess the only thing I’d say is I’m not ruling it out.” Walker said his focus as governor was on substance, not longevity, Politico reported. “For me, it’s really a measure of what I’ve accomplished and what more I could accomplish if I was in a different position,” Walker said in the interview. When questioned about the story, Walker did not dispute the Politico account but said he

is “focused on being governor.” “My number one job is helping people of the state of Wisconsin create jobs,” he said. “I’m focused on that. I had to run hard twice the last two years to get that job. Any other discussions about what may or may not be in the future is really related to what I do as governor. So it’s in my best interest to continue to do a good job for people of the state. But I’m not testing anything right now.” Walker said he has not decided yet on running for reelection in 2014. But he has begun to set up a campaign team for the 2014 race, hiring four staffers. Asked if he would serve a full second term, if re-elected, Walker said, “For me, that’s a discussion to have in the 2014 campaign. My only focus right now is literally as I’ve been obsessed with for the last couple of years is creating jobs and putting people back to work in the state.” Mike Tate, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, said in a statement, “That Scott Walker would openly contemplate a run for president after

a dismal record of job loss, division, diminished standards and unethical conduct is shocking in itself. Perhaps the best Republicans can do is a Governor who is last in the Midwest in every economic indicator.” Tate added, “That he is openly and baldly displaying that he would rather serve his ambition than the people of Wisconsin whom he has already failed is disappointing but not surprising.” During his speech, Walker detailed how he closed a budget deficit in Wisconsin and won a recall race. He laid out his agenda for education reform as well as dealing with the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. He touted his plan to turn down a full expansion of Medicaid as a way to “move people from dependence to independence.” Under Walker’s plan, extremely poor adults without dependent children will be able to enroll in BadgerCare, while adults with higher incomes currently in the program will be shifted into a federal marketplace set to begin in 2014.

App designed to prevent drunken driving MADISON—A new phone app is designed to help keep drunken drivers off the road. The “Drive Sober” app launched by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation allows motorists to estimate their blood alcohol content and select a designated driver. The app also has a function to find a safe ride home that uses the phone’s GPS to provide contacts for nearby taxi, mass transit and designateddriver services. It also includes a simulation showing the physical effects of being drunk. The department is touting the app in advance of the St. Patrick’s holiday weekend. A free download of the app is available online at zeroinwisconsin.gov.

Court declines to hear killer’s appeal MILWAUKEE—The state Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from a Milwaukee man convicted of killing seven women over a 21-year period. Walter E. Ellis pleaded no contest in 2011 to charges of firstdegree intentional homicide and first-degree murder. The 52year-old was sentenced to life in prison. He appealed the conviction, arguing in part that he only accepted a plea deal because he thought all the pretrial publicity made it impossible for him to get a fair trial in Milwaukee County. He said the judge should have granted a change in venue. An appeals court upheld the conviction. Ellis then appealed to the state Supreme Court. Defense attorney Richard Hart said Friday the high court has declined to take the case.

Journey/Class hopes to improve understanding Continued from 1A how the brain works, the different types and diagnoses of mental illness, what medications are available to treat mental illness and how to better communicate with a loved one with mental illness. “It is a very comprehensive program,” Therese said. “Many people get a huge sense of relief and empowerment from the information.” Classes normally include 20 to 25 people. Joyce Burland, a clinical psychologist, developed the course’s original curriculum more than 20 years ago. Her sister and daughter both live with schizophrenia and her life experience deeply influenced her work. The East Coast woman researched and wrote the materials as a way to help families cope with situations and to improve their support network. She also came up with the idea of family members teaching other family members. The format is successful because the class is nonthreatening, the material is credible and a bond emerges among those attending, Therese said. “Feedback from participants has shown that their understanding of mental illness and their ability to cope with it is markedly improved after

One session focuses on the caregiver and coping with stress and emotional overload. “People are so concerned with taking care of this other person that they do not take care of themselves,” Steven said. “But, if you are not healthy, how can you help someone else?” Another session helps caregivers gain empathy for their loved ones with mental illnesses. By taking part in role-playing exercises, caregivers begin to understand what someone else is experiencing. “Understanding is the first step towards empathy,” Therese said. “All the sharing that takes place (in the course) helps to build better understanding of the complexity of

taking the course,” she added. Steven said that knowledge from the class has improved his life. “No one wants to talk about mental illness,” he said. “There’s a stigma attached to being mentally ill. The course helps people understand that mental illness is a disease. The more education that people have about mental illness the less stigma they will attach to it.” Every person who comes to the class has a unique story and insights to share. “The last group was diverse,” Therese said. “I think we had just about every mental illness represented. We also had every relationship from parents to children to spouses and other relatives.” In the past, people have at-

Washington — Hurricane and Jordan, a pair of Secret Service dogs who were injured as they helped take down a White House fence jumper, got the all-clear to return to duty Thursday and quickly became stars for the beleaguered agency. White House press secretary Josh Earnest hailed the duo at a daily news briefing Thursday and the Secret Service tweeted out their service pictures and mini-bios. Jordan, 5, and Hurricane, 6, of the Belgian Malanois breed, were taken to a veterinarian Wednesday and treated for “minor bruising,” Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said. News footage of the inci-

dent showed the intruder wrestling and kicking the dogs on the North Lawn of the White House. Dominic Adesanya, 23, of Bel Air, Md., who was unarmed at the time of his arrest and was treated at a hospital for dog bites, was charged with two felony counts of assault on a police officer — the dogs — four counts of resisting/unlawful entry and one count of making threats. He was ordered held without bond in an appearance Thursday before a federal magistrate judge. Adesanya’s father, Victor, said his son had the paranoid belief that he was being watched by cameras and had previously been arrested at the executive mansion. Victor Adesanya said his son was not trying to hurt the president. “He’s not violent. He’s not a criminal. He’s not a murderer. He’s just someone that’s just mentally disturbed,” he said. Adesanya had previously

been arrested at the White House on July 27 and ordered to undergo mental health screening. He was apprehended again on July 30 after he refused to leave the Treasury building, which is next to the White House, and swung his fists at officers. Dominic Adesanya was supposed to return to court Sept. 9 but didn’t show up, and warrants for his arrest were issued. His capture after vaulting the fence was a bit of good news for the Secret Service, which has been pilloried since Sept. 19, when Omar Gonzalez, carrying a knife, scaled the fence, ran across the lawn and got inside the White House before he was apprehended. The dog teams that protect the White House were not released in that incident. This week, a federal judge delayed Gonzalez’s arraignment because of questions about his mental fitness to stand trial.

Realtor of the Week

Newer agent enjoys the challenge of building his business Jason Strong

ROBERT WARDE | Contributor

A decade ago, Jason Stong didn’t know anything about real estate. An interest in it and investments in a few rental properties led him to turn away from nine-to-five jobs in favor of a more flexible schedule. Conversations with one of his friends who helped him sell a condo and advised him to get in the business helped. The friend enjoyed real estate sales because he believed it’s an excellent business and something one can work into. “I thought about his advice and realized that it is something I enjoyed all aspects of, including meeting new people and working with clients. I moved ahead and got my license in 2011,” Stong said. He discusses his career and approach to selling real estate in the edited interview below.

How have you been building your business? I market by sending mailers and have magnets on my car to advertise. I’d done my research when deciding which firm to work with. I saw Coldwell Banker everywhere including the Journal Sentinel so my research confirmed that it would be a good fit and their marketing programs are very effective.

What do you enjoy about selling real estate? Time flexibility and the ability to better manage my time. I get to spend quality time with my family and reach out people and help them find one of their greatest investments, their home.

What do you consider to be your biggest challenge? During the past few months I’ve written offers on homes and found that, in the matter of days, their no longer on the market because real estate sales are picking up while the inventory of homes for sale is slowly decreasing. The challenge is showing people many homes and then those homes come off the market quickly because they’ve sold with so many offers coming in so fast.

Tell me about the condition of the worst house you’ve had to list or show. There was one that was so bad from top to bottom. Floors needed to be replaced, the bathroom had to be gutted and the foundation was in complete disarray. The house was inhabitable so I believe the seller really was selling the land. The home needed to be rebuilt.

What role do you think a realtor should play for a client? Being of counsel to them by responding to email or phone calls quickly because customers are what is driving the business. You have to help them any way

possible. I recently got a call late in the day and the client wanted to view a home the next day. You have to make that happen.

What qualities make for a good realtor? Listening to clients to better understand what their needs are and then meet their needs. You have to put the customer first.

What makes your approach to selling real estate different from other agents? I make myself available very late into the evening, around the clock, really. I dress in business casual attire to tell people that I am accessible and approach the business casually and relaxed so that anyone would find me approachable and willing to help anyone find a home regardless of neighborhood or price.

Have you had any mentors? In the beginning the friend who got me into the business has been very helpful. He works out of a sales office in my condo building and any time he was available, I would meet with him and ask questions and put him on the spot by asking him how to do things like completing listing contracts and lease agreements. He really got me going.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Whether you have one customer or 100 customers, you have to put yourself 100 percent and dedicate yourself wholeheartedly to the business even if you start part time.

What’s the most important thing you tell clients?

If the first house you look at isn’t your dream home, keep looking. Don’t sell yourself on the first house because there may be others we haven’t seen yet that may be better. Don’t settle on the first one.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY Sprinkler bursts, floods City Hall basement A frozen sprinkler head in City Hall’s basement burst Tuesday. About 3 to 4 inches of water filled the area and damaged some information technology mechanical systems. The damaged area is in the south end of the building. Desktop computers in City Hall lost Internet access for a time, but it later was restored. The tunnel connecting City Hall with the Zeidler Municipal Building and another city building at 809 N. Broadway was closed briefly.

Man wounded by police was holding pipe A man shot and wounded by a police sergeant at a west side home early Tuesday was holding a pipe that officers believed was the barrel of a gun, authorities said. Police were called to the home in the 3700 block of W. Galena St. about 4 a.m. Tuesday on a report of a suicidal man. When officers arrived, they saw the 56-year-old man holding what was later determined to be a pipe and ordered him to drop it. When the man did not comply with the order, he was shot by the 31-year-old sergeant, who has been with the department for 13 years, authorities said. Officers feared for their safety and that of another occupant of the home before the man was shot, authorities said. The man’s condition was described as stable. The sergeant, whose name was not made public, was placed on administrative duty until an investigation into the incident is finished.

Police officer accused of theft while on duty A police officer was charged Tuesday with steal-

ing money from a convenience store where he had responded to a burglary complaint. Carl V. Howell, 37, is charged with theft and official misconduct in the Nov. 20 incident at Hopkins Food Mart, at N. 46th St. and Hopkins Ave. According to the criminal complaint, the store’s owner had reported a burglary, and Howell came to take a report. The owner showed Howell a drawer with cash that was not taken during the burglary, and Howell later went back to the drawer and took some cash. His actions were recorded on store surveillance video. Upon his arrest, Howell admitted taking about $200 and said he did so because he was behind on his rent, the complaint says. The theft charge is a misdemeanor. Misconduct in public office is a felony punishable by up to 18 months in prison and two years of extended supervision.

Alcohol a factor in teen’s fatal crash Muskego — Alcohol was a factor in a crash about 1:15 a.m. Saturday in which recent Muskego High School graduate Kayla Corona, 18, was killed, a preliminary police report indicates. The single-vehicle crash happened on Henneberry Drive. Corona’s car left the road and struck a utility pole, police said.

WISCONSIN Deputy kills inmate trying to escape A Walworth County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man Monday at the Lakeland Medical Center in the

Frost from vapor rising from the water coats plants along the Menomonee River as frigid winds and subzero temperatures descend upon the city Tuesday. It’s the first time since 2009 that Milwaukee has seen two consecutive days or more with subzero lows. Town of Geneva, authorities said. The inmate, Alfredo Emilio Villarreal, 18, of Janesville, was in the Walworth County Jail on a probation and parole hold. While at Lakeland to undergo medical tests, authorities said, Villarreal attacked the sheriff’s deputy in an attempt to escape. The deputy used a Taser on Villarreal, which did not stop him, authorities said. Villarreal then used a chair to try to break out the window in his room, and tried to strike the deputy over the head with the chair, authorities said. The deputy discharged his handgun, and Villarreal died at the scene,

authorities said.

Court is asked to review domestic partnerships Pro-marriage plaintiffs who failed in legal challenges to Wisconsin’s domestic partnership law have now asked the state Supreme Court to review the matter. In December the Court of Appeals ruled that the law did not conflict with the state’s ban on gay marriage and civil unions. On Tuesday, the Alliance Defending Freedom announced that it and other groups had petitioned the high court to hear an appeal of the December ruling. “We are appealing the appellate court’s decision

because this domestic partnership scheme is precisely the type of marriage imitation that the voters intended to prevent,” said Austin Nimucks, senior counsel with ADF in Washington, D.C. “The people of Wisconsin believe that marriage is the one and only relationship that is absolutely essential to the future of humanity,” said Wisconsin Family Action President Julaine Appling, who has been the lead plaintiff in the case since it was first filed in Dane County in 2010.

Body found on frigid driveway identified Green Bay — The man

whose body was found on the driveway outside his home this week has been identified as Brian L. Hicks, 38. Frigid weather is to blame for Hicks’ death, the Brown County medical examiner said. Temperatures were in the single digits about the time Hicks was found Monday morning. Hicks died as a result of hypothermia caused by prolonged exposure with inadequate clothing, the medical examiner’s office said. Preliminary tests suggest alcohol may have been a factor. Tupperware, Digital Realty in growth mode Stocks paying dividends are worth a look By KATHLEEN GALLAGHER kgallagher@journalsentinel.com

A long list of worries has investors predicting slow economic growth in the next year. Higher taxes, uncertainty over the debt ceiling, the specter of automatic government spending cuts and high unemployment are just some of the factors that put Milwaukee money manager MiShelton chael Shelton in that camp. A Federal Reserve that is committed to a low interest rate environment and a housing recovery that appears to be sustainable is expected to help the economy avoid recession, said Shelton, co-portfolio manager of the Nicholas Equity Income Fund. “However, we don’t expect more than 2% to 3% GDP growth in 2013,” he said. Shelton’s response is to make sure his portfolio contains dividend-paying stocks with specific factors that drive demand. Tupperware Brands Corp. (TUP, $67.64), Orlando, Fla., makes and sells preparation, serving and storage containers and other household products through an independent sales force of 2.8 million representatives. Tupperware has a well-respected brand, excellent results, a growing dividend and is a great way to play on the world’s expanding middle class, Shelton said. About 60% of the compa-

ny’s sales are in emerging markets. The middle class in those markets is expected to grow to 3.2 billion people by 2020, up from 1.8 billion in 2009, Shelton said. Buoyed by sales into those markets, the company had double-digit growth through the recession and has improved its margins for six consecutive years, he said. Tupperware raised its dividend at a compounded annual rate of 16.5% during the last three years, and Shelton said he would expect another increase in 2013, along with share buybacks. The company is constantly innovating, and 25% of sales come from products that have been developed in the last two years, Shelton said. The biggest risk with Tupperware is the possibility of a stronger dollar, which would hurt overseas sales. While that may have a short-term effect, over the long term it has been “negligible,” Shelton said. Tupperware shares have traded in a 52-week range of $50.90 to $67.82. They could reach as high as $78 over the next 12 months, he said. Digital Realty Trust (DLR, $71.49), San Francisco, is a real estate investment trust that owns, develops and manages technology-related real estate. investment trust, with 103 properties across four continents, Shelton said. It has grown funds from operations — the measure REITs use to define cash flow from operations — at a compounded annual rate of 20% and pays a 4.2% dividend, he said. The company has increased its dividend at a compounded annual rate of 17% since 2005, he said. Digital Realty is benefiting from a number of longterm trends that are driving demand, including increased use of mobile devices and tablets and expanding Internet usage. Global Internet traffic is expected to grow by 30% a year from 2011 through 2016, Shelton said. “Smartphones, e-commerce and social media are all contributing to the vast amount of data generated and stored in these data centers,” he said. Digital Realty builds the centers and leases space to companies that need to host and store data. The biggest risk to the company is the possibility there will be an oversupply of data centers because so many potential entrants are attracted to the handsome returns operating data centers can generate, Shelton said. “But when you look out multiple years, I’m confident demand will be there,” he said. Digital Realty shares have a 52-week trading range of $59.25 to $80.59. They could reach as high as $80 over the next 12 months, Shelton said.

Bus & school safety

Every school day 23 million children ride a big yellow bus. While school buses are one of the safest modes of transport, there are real risks in getting on and off and walking to bus stops. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has offered some tips to help keep students, parents, and motorists safe around buses.

Tips for Drivers • When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school. Better yet, walk around your car or out to the sidewalk to check for any children walking in your path before you get in. • Drive slowly and watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks. Also be aware of children playing or waiting around bus stops. • Be alert and aware on the road. While children are typically taught about looking both ways, they could dart into the street without looking if they are late or distracted.

Tips for Children • Get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. • When the bus approaches, stand at least 6 feet away from the curb, and line up away from the street. • Wait until the bus stops, the door opens, and the driver says that it’s OK before stepping onto the bus. • If crossing the street in front of the bus, walk 10 feet ahead of the bus before you cross and make eye contact with the bus driver. • Use the handrails to avoid falls. When exiting the bus, be careful that clothing or backpacks don’t get caught in the handrails or doors. • Never walk behind the bus. • If you drop something near the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to pick it up because the driver may not be able to see you.

f you could live and work anywhere in the world, would Sauk County, Wisconsin be your first pick? It was for the Griesen family when they decided to pick up their Dutch dairy farm roots. The family lived comfortably in The Netherlands and Grandparents Henk and Joanne Griesen farmed under Holland’s quota system. Their son, Hans (wife Dorthe), worked as an animal nutritionist and wanted to farm with his parents but was nearly impossible, given the financial realities of Holland’s

quota system. They decided to leave Holland and then considered Canada, New Zealand, and the Untied States. They went on tours of Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. They decided they liked Wisconsin the most – seemed more like Holland weather. Here in Sauk County they could see what farmers were doing, and, with Wisconsin being “America’s Dairyland”, they felt proud about that. The Griesen’s milk 650 cows, mostly Holstein, in a double-12 Germania parlor they purchased from the Waunakee-based company. The milk is marketed through Grande Cheese Company. With help from their seven employees, the

cows produce an average of 82 pounds of milk per cow per day on three-timesa-day milking. All cows are fed the same mixed ration of corn, cotton seed, haylage, corn silage, and other nutrients that they purchase from New Age Custom Farming, United Co-op, Landmark Services Co-op, and Premier Co-op. The herd has a somatic cell count (a measure of milk’s quality) of between 80,000 and 90,000. The milk tests 3.2 percent and 4.0 percent butterfat. The Griesens do not use artificial bovine somatotropin. Regular weekly herd health checks are done by Andy Grupa of Waunakee Veterinary Service. In addition to the parlor

and freestall barn, the calf barn is constructed as a greenhouse. There is also a barn for cows with special needs such as illness, sore hoof, or difficult pregnancy. Construction was done by a host of local companies overseen by Lester Buildings and Redeker Dairy. The Griesens, along with their children/ grandchildren Hessel (11), Tanne (10), and Jennifer (8), welcome you to their threegeneration dairy operation and invite you to tour their facilities. They also thank so many businesses, neighbors, and new-found friends for helping them make this transition to America.

Title washing scam on rise (NAPSI)—A dangerous scam that hides major problems from consumers who purchase used cars is on the rise. That’s the word from experts who say nearly 800,000 used cars on America’s roads may be part of an emerging fraud called title washing. Title washing makes rebuilt wrecks and cars with odometer issues look like problem-free used cars on paper. Professional con men illegally alter vehicle documents to get title brands such as “salvage” or “flood” removed from a car’s title. They’ll often patch up the wrecked cars, move them to other

states and sell them with a clear title to unsuspecting buyers. Victims can lose thousands and put their lives at risk purchasing used cars with washed titles. To help, Carfax Vehicle History Reports alert people to cases of potential title washing. Every Motor Vehicle Department in the U.S. and Canada reports branded titles to Carfax. Getting an inspection by a trusted mechanic is also recommended. You can now shop for used cars at the all-new www.carfax.com.

Just Check Your Mailbox (NewsUSA) - Have you ever wondered how all of those colorful auto dealership promotion pamphlets arrive in the mail at the exact moment you are contemplating a new car purchase? Oddly enough, they are perfectly timed to coincide with your vehicle-buying needs -- and there’s a reason behind it.

Consider this: In 2012, studies showed that more than 90 percent of consumers began their car search online. This insight, according to Ken Schwartz, founder of InMarketSolution (IMS), a Chicago-based marketing company geared specifically to the Please see

New car

Continued from P. 2 auto industry and its potential buyers, provides dealerships with a treasure trove of demographic information. “Consumer data is abundant and valuable, yet many dealers fail to fully exploit its potential,” says Schwartz. “In this way, we use best-of-breed data to identify consumers currently in the market to buy a car.” The way it works is that IMS uses proprietary data from its InMarket Buyers List to identify when a consumer is in the market to buy or lease a car. IMS then compares that list to the Dealer Database Management System, removing all matches to ensure the IMS driven sales are new customers. Using multiple technologies, IMS tracks and interacts with the InMarket Buyers multiple times by using a combination of highly targeted direct mail and digital advertising that will potentially drive exclusive leads to a targeted dealership.

D

e

The difference between IMS and other direct-mail marketing companies is its business model. In a nutshell, if a dealership doesn’t get new customers through IMS’s efforts, the dealership doesn’t pay a dime. “I am so confident that our program works, that I am willing to put my money where my mouth is,” says Schwartz. “Simply put, if a dealership doesn’t sell cars to new customers, we don’t get paid.” Schwartz’s confidence comes from his past experience working with big data. Before founding IMS, Schwartz was the CEO of CityTwist, an email advertising company focused specifically on automotive marketing. During his tenure there, CityTwist became an Inc. 500/5000 fastest growing company in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. In addition, the company has been recognized as a fastestgrowing company in South Florida by the South Florida Business Journal for the last two years. Falling leaves present a beautiful safety hazard Watching leaves turn brilliant shades of color and fall from the trees is a favorite activity each fall. Drivers travel near and far to witness spectacular and colorful displays of fall foliage, hoping to catch the peak hues in their respective areas of the country. While falling leaves can be a sight to behold, those leaves can become a nuisance to drivers in various ways. Understanding certain inconveniences and safety risks posed by falling leaves can help motorists protect their vehicle and themselves. Staining Leaves can do more than just stain driveways; they also can damage a vehicle’s paint job. Should wet leaves, sap and other chemicals that leach out of the leaves stay on a car for an extended period of time, they can cause an outline stain and damage to the paint. It’s important to manually pick leaves off of the car’s surface right after they fall. Do not sweep them away; otherwise the leaves can scratch the paint surface. When all the leaves have been removed, thoroughly wash and dry the vehicle. Should stains be present already, use a commercial leaf-stain remover or automotive paint cleaner. Tackle one stain at a time. Clogging Leaves that fall can become trapped

in air intake vents, eventually impeding flow and causing odors. Leaves that fall in the groove of the windshield by the windshield wipers should be removed. Use a high-powered shop vacuum to remove any leaves that are imbedded in the venting. Check other areas of the car where leaves can become problematic, such as under the vehicle or in the rear exhaust pipe. Slippery surfaces The Car Care Council notes that wet leaves on the surface of roadways can be hazardous. Wet leaves can make roadways quite slippery, even as slippery as roadways when snow is falling. Drivers should slow down when roads are covered with wet leaves and take turns and off-ramps more carefully. Dry leaves also can pose problems, as they tend to accumulate at the edges of roads, where they easily can obscure curbs or street markings. Leaves may fill potholes, giving the false impression that a road is smooth and causing damage to tires and suspension systems when drivers drive over them. Autumn leaves may be beautiful to see, but they can complicate driving and fall car care. Motorists should keep their cars clear of leaves and use caution on roadways.

(NewsUSA) - Winter comes with a unique set of challenges, including lower air temperatures, lack of visibility, fewer daylight hours, falling snow and, of course, icy roads. These can certainly make for some hazardous driving conditions, which is why experts say you should dig out your ice scraper, gloves and snow shovels before hitting the road. “Don’t set off like a tank commander with a tiny hole cleared,” says Andy Smith, a patrolman in Canada. The safest way to prepare for winter driving is to be proactive before an emergency occurs. The following tips will give you some ideas on how to drive safely all winter long: * Surface Conditions. Roads and drive paths are likely to be covered with rain, sleet, snow and ice, which causes slippery driving conditions and reduces tire traction. Consider using snow tires in areas where winter weather is severe. It’s also important

to inspect your tires for uneven wear, cupping and proper tread depth. Also consider the last time you had the tires rotated, balanced and aligned. * Emergency Situations. Winter weather increases the chance of getting into a car accident. Pack an emergency kit to leave in your vehicle at all times. Consider including safety items such as flares, medical supplies, jumper cables, a flash light, batteries, a small shovel and tire chains. Also consider comfort items like blankets, gloves and snacks. * Clear Vision. Snow, ice and fog diminish your visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions. Remove all debris from your windshield, windows and outside mirrors before driving. * Vehicle Performance. Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manual to avoid hard starts, stalling and lost power during colder weather.
