Bridal Jewelry: Common Mistakes

Jewelry is a momentous component to most weddings. In fact, many couples introduce the idea of getting married with an engagement ring and they seal the deal with a set of wedding bands. Bridal jewelry is an ancient practice that is said to have originated with the Romans. Today, many couples take extra care when choosing the appropriate wedding jewelry. Unfortunately, there are some mistakes that brides have made in the past as it relates to choosing the perfect jewelry for their wedding day. The following is a list of mistakes that brides should be careful to avoid when choosing bridal jewelry. The Engagement Ring Shopping for the perfect engagement ring can be

very exciting, yet thought provoking. For most couples, an engagement ring is intended to serve as a permanent fixture in their relationship. With this said, it is important for the couple not to select a diamond engagement ring that is too trendy. Selecting bridal jewelry that is too up-to-the-minute may cause the bride to grow out of her ring in a couple of years. The best engagement ring is one that is timeless. Bridal Accessories The average bride will choose a bridal jewelry set to wear with her wedding gown. However, it is important that the bride refrain from choosing bridal jewelry before she has selected her wedding dress. Hence, bridal accessories are supposed to enhance the dress--not the other way around. This important factor follows the age-old question--What comes first, the chicken or the egg? Something Borrowed Inheriting a family treasure from mother, grandmother, or even great-grandmother is a kind gesture--especially when it can be worn on the bride’s wedding day. Although wearing a family heirloom for bridal jewelry is sentimental, it may not be a practical choice. As mentioned earlier, the purpose of accessories is to enhance the overall appearance of the wedding dress. If grandmother’s antique pearls conflicts with the style of the wedding gown, it may be best not to wear the heirloom. In this case, it may be

a good idea to agree to wear the borrowed jewelry to the engagement party, rehearsal dinner, or on the honeymoon. Something Old This could easily apply to something that you received from your mother, grandmother, etc.. but it Please see

Outdoor Fall Wedding Ideas on a Budget If you are thinking of having an outdoor fall wedding, then you have to decide on a lot of things. The main consideration is the venue. If the venue is a small garden or lawn, then you have to limit your guest list and make sure that the caterers are equipped to serve food outdoors. One of the best

fall wedding ideas, is to keep the main course simple and plan for five to six appetizers. Have a fully equipped bar that is well stocked. The best place where you can save on outdoor wedding, is in the outdoor fall wedding decorations. As the garden already has lots of flowers and greenery, you can get away with buying only a small amount of fresh flowers. As fresh wedding flowers are the most expensive item in wedding decorations, this works well for a budget wedding. Use inexpensive wedding decoration items like Chinese hanging lanterns in bright colors, monogrammed banners and lots of satin ribbons and silk flowers to decorate the wedding reception areas. Group together 6 to 8 chairs around the tables for your wedding guests to have their food. Decorate the chairs with wedding pew bows, tulle and satin ribbons. Place non floral centerpieces for weddings made with fresh fruits, vegetables and candles for a unique look. Use the autumn theme in centerpieces by using colors like orange, red Please see

Continued from P. 3 and yellow to echo the fall theme. Fall wedding centerpieces on a budget include, floating candles and tea lights that are placed on copper bowls or glass bowls with flower petals. You can also arrange pine cones that are spray painted in gold and copper paint to create a unique and inexpensive centerpiece. Unique Fall Wedding Ideas on a Budget Go through the latest wedding and bridal magazines to know which are the fall wedding colors and themes that are in fashion. You can get a lot of ideas by flicking through these magazines. If you haven’t decided on a color theme yet, then sticking to three or four colors that are reminiscent of fall, like

yellow, orange, mustard, coral and brick red will give a nice look to your fall wedding decorations. Try to get a fall wedding cake made from the local bakery or pastry shop to reduce cost. If you have a friend who specializes in making unique cakes, then you can ask her to make a custom wedding cake for you. It will cost much less than ordering it from an expensive and fancy wedding cake shop. One of the best ideas for fall wedding on a budget is to shop for your wedding dress well in advance so that you can get your dream dress at a lesser cost. There are many high-end shops that offer great discounts and you can get wedding dresses under 1000 dollars. Go vintage if you cannot find a wedding dress that you like since

you will not only save money but reduce the cost as well. Fall wedding bouquets can be made by combining expensive blooms with garden variety ones. For example you can pair exotic and expensive blooms like calla lilies and orchids with inexpensive flowers like daisies and peonies for a stunning wedding bouquet. These were some ideas for planning a fall wedding on a budget. Making some of the decorative items like centerpieces, silk flowers and wedding favors yourself will help you keep your wedding cost at the minimum. Planning a wedding on a budget might seem difficult, but it can be done if you know how. Read more at Buzzle: http://www.buzzle.com/ articles/fall-weddingideas-on-a-budget.html

Fall-ing in Love: Tips for Autumn Wedding Bliss

The Man’s Guide to Wedding Bands (NewsUSA) - Congratulations to all you soon-to-be grooms. Now that your wedding is only months away, your jewelry collection -- just a watch, huh? -- is about to increase by as much as 50 percent. Meaning, it’s time to start thinking about what kind of wedding band you want for yourself. Wedding bands have become the norm for men in recent years -- 97 percent of grooms in The Knot Market Intelligence’s “2011 Engagement & Jewelry Study” opted for one -so even if you have any doubts, your bride will probably set you straight. That means your only real decision is what kind

of band best suits you. To hear CNNMoney. com tell it, there are basically two camps: those who “don’t want to compromise” when it comes to quality (platinum bands), and those who feel they cannot afford the best and therefore need to settle (bands made from alternative metals). But, as jewelry expert Michael O’Connor points out, that doesn’t really give the whole picture. “It’s true that platinum is so rare -- 30 times more so than gold -- that if all the world’s supply were melted and poured into an Olympic-size pool, it would barely reach your ankles,” O’Connor says. “But men’s platinum

bands start at $500.” That turns out to be pretty comparable to the cost of the two most popular alternative metals: titanium and tungsten carbide. Both are perhaps best known for being used to make fighter jets. Cool, right? Well, yes, but that also means they’re intrinsically lightweight and lack the heft

of platinum. “Most men prefer something that feels masculine on their finger,” says O’Connor. There are other facts to consider, too. Tungsten and titanium jewelry will need special reconditioning if scratched, and cannot be resized. Even the more popular white gold will require rhodium replating to restore its white color due to wear over time. And while platinum -- as all precious metals -- can

(NewsUSA) - Caterers, event halls and wedding planners are gearing up for fall wedding season, one of the busiest times of the year for hopeful couples. Fall guarantees exquisite photo opportunities without the heat of summer -- and the wealth of inseason decorations are beautiful and affordable. In fact, September and October are the most popular and third most popular months for weddings, respectively. If you’re planning a fall wedding this season, read on for some helpful tips: 1. Keep warm. Since outdoor fall weddings have the potential to get chilly, keeping your guests warm is a must. Offer hot cocoa and homey baskets of soft blankets or cozy shawls. Set up fire pits or outdoor heating stations where guests can shake of the chill. 2. Location, location,

location. Select a locale that is known for its fall scenery. For example, as much as it’s known for history, Valley Forge and Montgomery County, Pa. is celebrated for its brilliant autumnal hues and stunning landscape -- a picture-perfect place for memorable fall nuptials in a historic area of southeastern Pennsylvania. Named among the top 10 national parks for fall foliage, the 3,500-acreValley Forge National Historical Park offers a perfect fall backdrop. Learn more at www.valleyforge.org. 3. Incorporate fall colors into the wedding party wardrobe. Chocolate brown compliments a variety of fall color schemes, and it’s flattering for most women. But if brown doesn’t suit the plans, burgundy is another great fall shade that makes the bridal white pop. 4. Select in-season flowers and decorations. Unless the bride has her heart set on lily of the valley or orchids, there are beautiful in-season flowers to choose from. Dahlias, chrysanthemums, asters, roses, zinnias and sunflowers all create elegant bouquets and floral displays with a lovely hint of fall. Add some crab apples for a playful, non-floral element. 5. Mix and match gourds, pumpkins and squash. Pumpkins can be tacky or a little too reminiscent of Halloween, so class them up by serving pumpkin soup, pumpkin cocktails or tiers of mini pumpkins. Gourds also make eyecatching vases, and all three can be arranged as charming centerpieces.

Note to Brides and Grooms: Don’t Forget to Buy Each Other a Present for error. So here’s some tips to keep in mind whether you two opt for some type of jewelry -the traditional and most popular choice -- or something else. * Practicality can wait. Etiquette dictates that gifts be exchanged at one of three times: the night before the wedding, the morning of the ceremony, or right before you leave on your honeymoon. So you could see where this has the potential for becoming a bigger disaster than Chernobyl if the groom’s idea of “practical” is, say, a toaster. * Being uniquely personal is appreciated. One of the best examples

we’ve heard of is a guy who had a photographer secretly capture the moment he proposed in New York’s Central Park, and then presented the results to his bride on the day of their wedding. “So cute!” read a typical blog post. The downside, of course, is that pulling it off requires imagination and -- in this instance -- a lot of advance planning. * Jewelry can be “traditional” without being boring. Case in point: the very hot Argyle diamonds trend (www. d i a m o n d s w i t h a s t o r y. com), which fulfills the quest of even the most eco-minded couples for diamond fashion jewelry since the stones are

produced in a socially and environmentally responsible way from the Argyle mine in Australia. And the diamonds, themselves, come in gorgeous neutral shades like champagne, cognac, silver and gray.

Continued from P. 6 scratch, the metal is simply displaced on the surface of the ring, meaning very little metal is lost in wear. That makes it the most durable family heirloom that will last generations. Still confused? Then ask yourself this question: How committed are

you to your future wife? If the answer’s what we think, then know that platinum has traditionally symbolized a relationship that will endure since it doesn’t fade or change color. “That’s the kicker for a lot of couples,” says O’Connor. (NewsUSA) - If you’re reading this story, you’re probably one of the approximately 825,000 couples who’ve just gotten engaged since Thanksgiving and are now planning your wedding. So here’s perhaps the single most important reminder -and grooms do seem to need more reminding than brides -- anyone will offer: Tradition holds that you both exchange wedding presents. (Yes, grooms, even though you just bought her an engagement ring.) But what to get? “Gifts should come from the heart,” says WeddingChannel.com. Well, yeah. But that still leaves a lot of room

It is one form of outreach to people who may not always feel connected to the larger community and its resources. “I understand the sociology of life and poverty and I realize we need to provide more holistic support for people. We need to teach English, parental education and help people find doctors and services,” for example, she said. “We are trying to increase the quality of life for Latinos to have a better life and to encourage leadership.” Volunteering is one way to do that, Astudillo says. “There’s need everywhere. I realize unless I get involved with the community I don’t know how to support people and their aspects of life. Volunteering empowers me to know how to help people.”

THE SCIENCE OF COMPOSTING The National Composting council estimates the average U.S. household generates 650 lbs. of compostable items every year. Composting is a great way to deal with food waste, leaves, and grass clippings. Backyard compost systems reduce the amount of waste going to a landfill and keeps garbage from smelling. Finished compost is a valuable soil amendment that increases the health of the soil and the plants that reside in it. When composting at home it is important to remember a healthy pile needs food, oxygen and water.

SAVE LEAVES THIS FALL FOR COMPOST PILES NEXT SPRING.

FOOD

Compost is made when bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, mites, worms, sow bugs, centipedes, and other organisms eat the organic matter and break it down. These organisms need a balanced diet of carbon and nitrogen, commonly known as browns and greens. Brown items add carbon to the pile and include: leaves, straw, paper, sawdust, animal bedding mixed with manure, and wood chips. Common green or nitrogen rich items include: vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings, and manure from herbivores. When added to a pile of 2 or 3 browns for every green, by volume, organisms flourish and compost is quickly made. If this ratio is altered the process becomes slower. Other acceptable compost materials include: egg shells, tea bags, used potting soil, most weeds before they go to seed, garden debris, cardboard, hair, fur, and other natural fibers like lint. When adding dryer lint avoid using non-organic fibers like polyester. Not everything should be composted. It’s best to avoid meat, dairy, oils, and animal waste as these items will create an odor and attract rodents. Persistent weeds (crabgrass, invasive species, weeds gone to seed) and diseased or chemically treated plants may continue living in the compost pile. Most backyard systems are not hot enough to kill these items and they will continue living in the newly created compost. You should also avoid adding walnut leaves and nuts as walnut trees have a naturally occurring chemical in them that inhibits growth in other plants.

OXYGEN

It’s important to remember that compost piles need oxygen. If a pile is starved for air, all activity stops and it may start to smell. Turning the pile or inserting sticks, cornstalks or perforated pipes into or under the pile are all ways to ensure enough oxygen is reaching the compost.

WATER

Water is vital to support compost pile organisms. If a pile is too dry, bacterial activity will slow or cease; if it’s too wet, the pile will lose air

EAU CLAIRE COUNTY

RECYCLING will once again be participating in the bulk backyard compost bin sale next Spring. To reserve a bin call or e-mail the Recycling Coordinator; 715-839-2756 or amanda.haffele@co.eau-claire.wi.us.

and lead to anaerobic conditions (meaning smells will form). Piles should be as wet as a wrung out sponge. A simple moisture test is to take a handful of compost and squeeze it. If it stays together in a ball its good; if it falls apart add water; if water drips out, add browns and/or turn the pile.

FINISHED COMPOST

Finished compost is dark, loose, crumbly and has an earthy smell. The original materials are unrecognizable and the pile has shrunk to about 1/3 of its original volume. Try a bag test to make sure it’s done. Using a sealable plastic bag, add a sample of compost and let it sit for a week. If the compost has an ammonia smell, it is unfinished. Finished compost can be added to gardens, flower beds, lawns, and house plants. In sandy soils it will increase the soil’s ability to hold water and nutrients. In clay soils it will create pores that allow water to drain and roots to spread. Compost adds slow-release macro- and micronutrients, absent in most synthetic fertilizers, which can stay in the soil for years. Good luck composting and remember - to keep rodents and other creatures from visiting your pile, keep it scent free. Animals are attracted to scents, so if your pile has an odor, the animals will know it’s there.

FALL YARD WASTE COLLECTION will be November 3 – 7, 2014. Haulers require the use of paper bags or biodegradable plastic bags. Contact your hauler for more details. Yard waste is NOT being accepted at the Jeffers Road Brush Site.

THE LAST CLEAN SSWEEP AND CLEAN AMMUNITION RECYCLING event will take place

AGRICULTURE CLEAN SWEEP is November 3-7, 2014. Eau Claire County farms need to contact WRR Environmental Services directly to schedule an appointment, 715-834-9624.

November 8, 2014 from 8 am – 12 pm at WRR Environmental Services, 5200 Ryder Road.

Trick or Treating Safety Eau Claire Trick-or-Treating: Friday, Oct 31 • 5-7:30 pm (Downtown hours: 3-5 pm) The Eau Claire Police Department wishes to pass along these safety tips for a happy and safe Halloween: Children’s visits should be made from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. Residents who wish to welcome trickor-treaters should leave a door or porch light on. Children should be advised to only visit homes with outside lights on. Children who are trick-or-treating should be supervised by a responsible person who is not trick-or-treating. Only cross streets at crosswalks or intersections of streets. Never cross a street between parked cars or midblock, and never run into the street. Motorists should exercise extreme caution during the hours of Halloween activities and be aware of unpredictable movements by children.

6D Sunday, October 19, 2014 LEADER-TELEGRAM

Halloween costumes should be light in color, short enough to prevent tripping, and made of non-flammable material. For greater visibility, costumes should be decorated with reflective tape or glow sticks. Trick-or-treaters should also carry a flashlight. Facial makeup should be used when possible. Masks tend to obstruct vision. Instruct children not to eat treats until a responsible adult has inspected them. Only give and accept wrapped or packaged treats. Keep costumed children away from pets as the costume may frighten them.

Milwaukee woman arrested in hotel prostitution sting By Dan Holtz Leader-Telegram staff A woman who was connected to an incident where a man claimed he was robbed last summer while at an Eau Claire hotel room with another woman working as a prostitute was accused of soliciting sex for money early Friday morning in Eau Claire. Iesha M. Harmon, 18, of Milwaukee, was charged Friday in Eau Claire County Court with misdemeanor counts of prostitution and bail jumping. A misdemeanor count of obstructing an officer in the previous case remains unresolved. Court Commissioner Brian Wright set a $200 cash bail for Harmon, who returns to court Nov. 25. According to the criminal complaint: An Eau Claire police officer found an ad Thursday in the escort section of the website Backpage. com that suggested sexual favors for money. The officer arranged a meeting at an Eau Claire hotel with the person listed in the ad. Harmon was arrested after she met the offi-

cer at the hotel. Harmon and the woman depicted in the pictures associHarmon ated with the ad appeared to be the same person. In the previous case, Harmon was charged along with four other people. Three of them have already been sentenced: Larry L. Boone of Milwaukee, Jade A. Howell of Chicago and Jose E. Castillo of Los Angeles. D’Angelo L. Hodge, 25, of Milwaukee, returns to court Nov. 12. According to the criminal complaint in that case: Castillo called Eau Claire police at 8:46 p.m. June 24 to report he had just been robbed by Boone, Hodge and Howell at a room at the Days Inn Campus Hotel, 2305 Craig Road. Castillo said he met Howell in a hallway at the hotel. After a conversation they decided to meet in Castillo’s room. Castillo said he ulti-

mately decided not to become involved in prostitution-type activity. Howell accused him of wasting her time. She made a phone call and a short time later Boone and Hodge came into the room and robbed Castillo of $100. Boone and Hodge told Castillo he had to pay them for wasting their time. Howell told police she came to Eau Claire with Boone, Hodge and Harmon. She said Boone was Harmon’s pimp and Hodge is her ex-boyfriend. Howell said Boone and Hodge came into Castillo’s hotel room while she was performing a sex act on Castillo. Howell said the encounter with Castillo was the third sexual act she performed for money at the hotel over a 36-hour period at the request of Hodge and Boone. Harmon was arrested for giving false information to police. Holtz can be reached at 715-833-9207, 800-2367077 or dan.holtz@ecpc. com.

MORE THAN JUST A HOLE

IN THE GROUND

A sanitary landfill is not a dump, it is a complicated engineered hole in the ground. Dumps were used in the “old days before the environment was taken into account for dumping trash. Dumps have had negative side effects on the Earth. Polluting waterways has been the most significant event. Waterways include ground and surface water (rivers, lakes, oceans, streams, etc.), drinking wells and underground aquifers. Litter has always been an issue at dumps as well.

Sanitary landfills take all of this and more into account when being built. Today’s landfills take years and years of planning before they are constructed. Before a hole is dug the land must be surveyed so certain planning methods can be done. The surveys take into account where all water sheds are located, the slope and geography of the land, neighbors and roadways. The landfill must slope in one direction so that the water will all run to this corner when the refuse is inside. This is because the leechate or liquids must be removed and tested, then either treated at a water treatment facility or put back onto the refuse to increase decomposition. After the hole is dug the landfill will be layered with sand, gravel, clay and a geothermal membrane (HDPE #2 plastic layer) to keep liquids from seeping into the ground. Pipes are also inserted into the landfill to monitor leechate levels, local ground water and gasses. Large fences and berms are constructed around the active cell to reduce the amount of litter that flies out. The landfill is split into cells with the active cell being the one that is being filled. After each load of garbage is dropped off a large machine will drive over and over it to help compact it, this increases the landfills capacity. At the end of the day the landfill operator must cover the refuse with some kind of daily cover. Daily cover usually consists of topsoil but can also be other things like shingles or car fluff. This also keeps the amount of littering and smell down as well as scavengers out. Rodents are not an issue at landfills due to the compaction by heavy machinery. You can however, find many birds such as gulls and vultures visiting the open face of a landfill. Once a cell fills up, it must be capped and monitored. The cells will be capped with a geothermal membrane, topsoil, netting and native grasses. A capped cell will produce methane that will be burnt off or collected to create energy. Some landfills produce enough methane to power small cities. Closed landfills may become parks, like the one in LaCrosse, or dog runs, similar to Menomonie’s.
