Vesneske commits to Walla Walla volleyball
Coach reviews Falcon girls’ hoops season Curlew ended Sprague-Harrington’s girls’ basketball season Wednesday of last week at the District 1B tournament in Deer Park. Despite the misfortune, Falcon head coach Matt Henry said the season “went very well; we changed our identity to be more successful, not only this season but for years to come.” Curlew used a compact 2-3 defense and got S-H in foul trouble early in the game. “We didn’t hit enough outside shots to make them come out and guard us,” Henry recalled. “With three starters out for the majority of the second and third quarters, Curlew attacked the inside of our defense and rebounded very well.” The final score was 49-33. Reflecting on the past season, Henry said he was “very thankful for the excellent senior leadership. Kayla Eagleson and Brandi Sweet did a great job of leading by example, not complaining about their roles, and doing anything and everything they could to get the win.” Eagleson was one of three girls to make the Bi-County 1B All-Opponent team. “Her confidence and offensive ability grew by leaps and bounds this year; she truly deserved the recognition,” Henry said. Joining her on the honors team were Justyne Talkington and Lacey Hirst. “I was very proud of their defensive and offensive leadership,” he added. Thinking ahead to the 2010-11 season, Henry admitted that “losing our seniors will hurt but our future is bright. Our eighth graders played quite a few games at the high school level this year and have progressed in their skills quite a bit. With more work this summer, our plans are to get back to state next year.”

Katie Vesneske, a member of Davenport High School’s Class of 2010, has committed to play volleyball at Walla Walla Community College next fall. She said she felt players there “were serious about volleyball and their studies” and that the school’s size and classroom size are “desirable.” “Katie is the type of player that every coach wants in their program. She is a hard worker and proven leader,” commented WWCC volleyball coach Tim Toon. “She works just as hard in the classroom as she does on the volleyball court. Katie’s dedication to the sport is also reflected in the sacrifices she has made to play club volleyball for so many years.” Toon said Vesneske also was considering Northwest Nazarene College, Spokane Falls Community College and the University of Washington as potential spots to land after she graduates. Walla Walla has been one of the top teams in Washington and Oregon over the past 10 years, with three east-region titles and a conference
