Mammogram service temporarily ends Sacred Heart Women’s Health has temporarily discontinued its mammography services coach, which travels to area locations including Ritzville. According to a letter faxed to East Adams Rural Hospital, mammography services ceased as of Oct. 9. The letter also states that a new coach is in the making, with the new vehicle expected on the road in late 2010. The letter cites multiple situations that led to closing the current coach until the new vehicle arrives:

the vehicle has 190,000 miles, requiring frequent and costly maintenance; and the film-based technology is no longer able to provide quality output as digital mammography became the standard five years ago. According to the letter, Inland Imaging, LLC, operates mammography screenings in four Spokane locations and one in Deer Park. Appointments may be made by calling (509) 4554455 or (800) 826-2944.

Vaccine: H1N1 flu shots arrive Continued from Page A-1 • Anyone with a weakened immune system • Anyone with certain muscle disorders (such as cerebral palsy) that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems • Anyone in close contact with a person who has a severely weakened immune system • Anyone with a long-term health problem such as heart disease, kidney or liver disease, lung disease – including asthma, diabetes or other metabolic disease or anemia and other blood disorders People with the above conditions should receive the inactivated vaccine. Individuals who have a severe, life-threatening allergy to eggs or to any other substance in the vaccine should not get a flu vaccine. It is important for individuals to inform the person administering the vaccine of severe allergies or of ever having an allergic reaction after a flu vaccination. In addition, the person giving the vaccine should be informed if someone has ever had Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), a severe illness that causes paralysis.

These may not be reasons to avoid vaccination, but the medical staff can help individuals decide. Those who are moderately or severely ill may be advised to wait until after they are recovered to get the vaccine. There is usually no reason to wait for vaccination for individuals who have a mild cold or other mild illness. The health department is advising that getting vaccinated for seasonal and H1N1 influenza as soon as the vaccine becomes available is a good idea. Children who are vaccinated against H1N1 virus before their 10th birthday need two doses given at least four weeks apart. Adults and children age 10 and above only need one dose.

Seasonal flu differs slightly in that children who are younger than nine years of age and getting a flu vaccine for the first time, or who got vaccinated last year but only received one dose, will need two doses this year. Adults and children nine and above only need one dose. Individuals may get seasonal flu and H1N1 vaccines on the same day if both are available; however, individuals cannot receive two nasal spray vaccines on the same day. A seasonal flu nasal spray and an H1N1 nasal spray need to be separated by a period of at least four weeks. For additional information, contact the Adams County Health Department at 659-3315 or (509) 488-2031.

Open burning season begins Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 2009, in the City of Ritzville limits and in Adams County Fire Protection District No. 1. The season ends in the spring when vegetation starts to dry in the warmer weather. ACFPD No. 1 Chief Scott Kembel reminds county residents that burning is allowed only for yard waste, and absolutely no burn barrels are permitted. A call must be placed to the sheriff’s office before area residents start to burn and again when the fire is extinguished. Maximum size of burn piles is four feet wide by four feed deep by three feet high. Burning permits are required and are available at Dennis Morgan’s office, 120 West Main Avenue in Ritzville. Within the city limits, it is legal to burn natural vegetation as long as guidelines are followed. For more information, residents within city limits should contact Ritzville Fire Chief Andy Lefevre. County residents in ACFPD No. 1 should contact Kembel. All burns must be extinguished by dusk and smoke must be kept under control.

Bids will be opened this week for the erection of the new school house at Ralston. Work on the school building in Washtucna was completed this week. The floors have been oiled and all the painting is done. The building is ready for use. W. A. Gildersleeve received word that machinery for the electric light plant in Washtucna was shipped October 8 from San Francisco. Wilson Ford, the electrician, is busy wiring houses and preparing to install the lights. County Engineer H. W. Pettijohn says there will be about 20 road crossings on the line of the new railroad out of Ritzville. The engineers are making overhead and under crossings wherever possible. There will be about 10 of these, and the remaining will cross the county roads on a level with the road.

The new U.S. 10 freeway around the Ritzville city limits should be open by November 15 if there are no severe changes in the weather, a spokesman for the state highway department said recently. Stars of last week’s bowling activity at the Airport lanes were Bob Blodgett and Henry Steinmetz. Blodgett capped his three-game set with the highest game seen at the lanes this season – a big 257 to give him a 617 scratch total for the evening. Steinmetz rolled games of 190-209-222 to lead his team to an important three-point win. His 621 scratch total is the first 600 series of the season for the City league. Left halfback Klaus Wiebhe and right tackle Dale Knuth were named back and lineman of the week by vote of the Bronco squad after their smooth performances in the Pomeroy game last Friday night.

Sutton, who thirty-seven years ago was made an Odd Fellow in the local lodge, was present at the Tuesday night meeting. Ritzville Lodge No. 58 presented Mr. Sutton with a thirtyfive year jewel. The old house at the corner of Adams and Broadway, built by Wm. Snyder, former Ritzville merchant, more than forty years ago, is being torn down, and the lumber will be taken to Washtucna for another house Mr. Snyder is erecting. The work of razing the old landmark is being done by Frank Benward, A.L. St. John and A. T. Little.
