FRUGAL Continued from page 6 them, and yet they seemed very much at peace. This summer I think I found a new appreciation for their lifestyle of simplicity. The majority of our experiences included very little, if zero, technology. We had more time to talk, laugh and try out new things that we had never done before (like catching a fish for Bri). Another truth we were reminded of is the importance of intentionally setting aside time as a family. Between jobs, school, play dates and commitments, it is hard to find regular time to hang out as a family. Because of the nature of writing a weekly column we were in essence “forced” to do something every week. It was a blessing to our family.
The kids looked forward to it every week. Tammy and I got in the habit of intentionally planning our week around the family instead of around the to-do list. We tried some new things we might not have otherwise (like a $5 colossal burrito) and ended up saving a lot of money versus what we could have spent on a “typical” summer with the kids. Typically we would drop a couple hundred dollars at the amusement park, nearly $50 to go to a movie, road tripping across the state would put us back several hundred dollars. By choosing to live frugally those dollars could do a lot of good in our immediate community of Spokane and the larger global world as well. We could help kids who don’t have clothes or school supplies for the start of the school year. We could help refill food pantry shelves and feed those who are
