Main Street polishes the State Main Street Program silver for celebration ◗business
saved, budget uncertain The Washington State Main Street Program appears to have survived the worst of the state budget cuts. Last week, the Main Street bill (SHB 2704) passed the Senate 45-0. The legislation moves the Main Street Program from the Department of Commerce into the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. This week, legislators talk more about funding. The House budget moves the program to the
new department and reduces its funding from $120,000 to $44,000 for 2010. The Senate budget also moves the program, but provides no funding. “The last piece is the budget and the FTE piece,” said Mari Mullen, Port Townsend Main Street executive director. Boosters hope for a $100,000 budget and one full-time employee. “That will give us a year to regroup,” she said about future state funding.

Port Townsend’s Main Street Program does not get money directly from the Washington State Main Street Program. But without a state program, Port Townsend and the 10 other of ficial Main Streets (plus about 80 other communities) in Washington would lose national accreditation, along with access to resources and private investment that protect historic downtowns and enhance the job base.

resources more efficiently. The Jefferson County Public Health Department also was certified as a green business, the first local government agency in Jefferson County to receive certification. The health department minimized paper use and incorporated sustainable business practices. The Green Business Program was developed to recognize local businesses that integrate environmentally sensitive decisions and use sustainable practices in their day-to-day operations. It is funded by the Washington State Department of Ecology. For more information, call Jefferson County Environmental Health, 385-9444.
Silver is a grand color for the Port Townsend Main Street Program, celebrating 25 years in service this month. The Port Townsend chapter is celebrated as a state and national leader in the program, reflecting a community with strong volunteer support for historic preservation and small business. The local program’s annual membership party is 5:25-7:25 p.m. Thursday, March 25 in the four-story Mount Baker Block Building, the chapter’s home since its inception. Special guests include David Kahley, who served for three years as Port Townsend’s first Main Street director. Port Townsend’s Main Street was one of five pilot programs established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1985, along with programs in Pullman, Centralia, Olympia and Longview. “Our organization is very proud to have served our community for a quarter of a century,” said Susan Windle, program president and co-owner of Forest Gems Gallery. “Twenty-five years ago, it was a sleepy place, with buildings in need of repair and businesses which had difficulty surviving the winter. The restoration of the buildings, strategic planning, and successful marketing and promotions have helped put Port Townsend on the map.” Public government, private
