YAKIMA – Beginning and advanced birders will learn a new way to identify birds at a Yakima Area Arboretum workshop on Saturday, March 6, presented by Andy Stepniewski and the Yakima Valley Audubon Society. The workshop, which begins at 9:00 am, introduces you to bird songs and calls as a method of identification. It starts out with slides, songs and calls of local birds you probably already know; then progresses to songs and calls of local birds you may not know. Using the iPod as a tool helps with this process. Nobody would say “birding by ear” is an easy way to bird identification, but becoming aware of bird songs and calls adds another dimension to time in the outdoors.

THE TRIBUNE BEFORE 12 noon
TUESDAY
Following the in-class session, participants will venture out to the Arboretum's natural area for a short walk to identify singing and calling birds. Be sure to bring your binoculars so you can visually appreciate the birds you hear. A true story tells about a famous birder, who was blind, yet identified more than 70 species of birds while walking in Ohio one spring morning. You can become well versed in birdsongs, too. Expect two hours of lecture and 30-60 minutes' of outdoor walking. Dress for the weather. Bring binoculars if you have them. Call the Yakima Area Arboretum to register (509-248-7337) and get ticket information. All proceeds will benefit the Yakima Area Arboretum. The Arboretum is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, which relies upon gifts and contributions to maintain its current programs and services.
