Over a year later, New 2 You is still the place you can go to wander the aisles, only now it has grown to over 180 booths in the store. With the great expansion now complete, thanks to John’s construction company, JTK Custom Renovations, the store has grown from 18,000 sq. ft. to 23,000 sq. ft! Which has made room for more vendors, and hours of items to see. There’s beads and gems from around the world, hand crafted rustic furniture, beautiful jewelry, air soft guns, vintage records, and an amazing assortment of antiques you could spend hours looking at. Also added to the store is a great 50’s theme espresso stand. We are now the #1 place to buy antiques in Kitsap County, thanks to everyone that voted. People express daily how glad they are that New 2 You! is here in Port Orchard. The owners Bev Leighton and John and Becky Kranjcevich couldn’t be happier with the store, they believe none of this could have happened without the wonderful vendors, and customers. “It’s a wonderful place to find great recycled items. With the economy the way it is, people want to save money on the everyday items that they need. shared Bev. at New 2 You you’ll always find things that are new to you!

A weekend that’s taken years to plan Cedar Cove Days the product of a lot of hard work by a lot of good people By JERRY CHILDS

Cedar Cove Days Association

One Saturday morning in July 2007, my wife and I were lounging around reading the morning paper and drinking coffee. Shannon read an article in our local paper, the Port Orchard Independent, entitled “Local Author’s Map Can Draw In Tourists.” She commented about the map and article, and how fans of a certain local author named Debbie Macomber were coming to Port Orchard from virtually all over the country. It seems they wanted to see the sites and places she writes about in her New York Times-bestselling series of books about a fictional northwest town called Cedar Cove. Shannon showed me the map, which astonishingly looked like Port Orchard — because it was Port Orchard. As I read the article, I found it incredible that people were coming here from all over the country pretty much unsolicited, and said to my wife, “Hey, if they’re coming here without any prompting from us at all, what would happen if we actually did something? What if we

put on an event, some kind of arts and literacy festival and called it something like ‘Cedar Cove Days,’ and invited her readers to come?” I took the idea to our local neighborhood improvement group, the Downtown Neighborhood Association, a civic-minded collection of local citizens interested in improving our town. I asked them whether we as a group would be willing to put on such an event. The response was immediately affirmative, and so off I went to call Debbie Macomber — whom I had never met — to see what she thought. Those who know Debbie know that she is a very busy person, so after calling and leaving a message and then receiving no response for more than a week or so, I thought the issue was dead. But one Sunday evening the phone rang. I answered, and on the other end, a cheerful voice said, “Jerry, this is Debbie Macomber.” Debbie apologized for taking so long to get back to me and said she was out on tour. I told her a little bit about my idea and asked if she would be willing to meet with our group. Without pausing, she said she would

be glad to come to a meeting. And when she did, Debbie liked my idea, liked our group and so after a lot of brainstorming, a second meeting was scheduled. As she was walking out the door, she said she would have her publicist send out an email blast and ask her fans what they might think about such an idea. I have to admit, I was curious at the prospect and wondered how many people she could possibly be talking about? So I asked, “Debbie, how many people are on your email list?” Now, you have to understand my email list is maybe 200 names. So I’m thinking surely more than that, but I was not prepared to hear her Jerry Childs answer: “Oh, about 100,000.” I thought, “Toto, we’re not in Kansas any more.” The second meeting was at my house on Kitsap Street. Debbie brought along her two publicists, Nancy Berland from Oklahoma and Leslee Borger from New York. As you might imagine, we found this impressive that she and her publisher would incur the expense to fly them here. Group member Cindy Lucarelli became our executive director and the framework for Cedar Cove Days began to take shape. During these early stages (late 2007), no one knew what this all meant — the time commitments, and really, the magnitude. But, I think these things work better when you don’t. Otherwise you might not try. The Cedar Cove Days idea had received support from Debbie, but she also needed her publisher, Harlequin Enterprises LTD, to approve. Debbie asked that Cindy and I go and talk with them as soon as possible. Unfortunately, Harlequin’s corporate headquarters are in Toronto, Ontario. It was late in the year, and winter was upon us — not the best of times to be winging across the country. We had no sponsors, no money, and we were now faced with the travel costs of going to Toronto not to mention the expenses in purchasing a computer and supplies for our new organization — at this point unofficially called Cedar Cove Association. We turned to our local Kitsap Bank, basically requesting seed money. We knew this was a long shot asking for money in 2007 for an event that won’t take place until 2009. But our prayers were answered and within a few short weeks, Kitsap Bank gave us a grant that meant all the difference as we went forward. The credibility we gained by being

able to say that we were being supported by such a fine and benevolent organization opened doors and eyes. As mentioned, we needed to meet with Harlequin and finally set up a date in January 2008. On the appointed day, we were prepared, but also a bit worried to be from tiny Port Orchard and making a presentation to a billion-dollar company. Then of course there was the part where we were not only asking for their favorite author’s hand, but oh by the way, could you throw in thousands of dollars as well. Our new friends at Harlequin, however, were wonderful and made us feel welcome. They love Debbie, and have been out here already to visit and help us plan. I have always been a fan of our Canadian friends to the north but, after this trip, I have to say I’m now a big fan. No wonder Debbie writes for them. Come August, it will be our turn to extend the hospitality and warmth. I know that everyone by now must recognize the great gift and opportunity that has been bestowed upon us by Debbie. Cindy and I have taken the Cedar Cove Days story on the road, visiting mayors, city councils and local nonprofit groups — anyone who would listen. We presented our event idea, sought civic cooperation, and in many, many cases, forged partnerships and relationships. The experience has been heartwarming and colorful to say the least! Our fundraising has brought in significant grants and donations: Kitsap Bank, Harlequin Enterprises LTD, Washington State Tourism, The Seattle Foundation, Kitsap Community Foundation, Delilah Rene and the City of Port Orchard, to name a few of the largest. I can remember wondering how, when Kitsap Bank first stepped forward in late 2007 with our first grant, where we ever were going to find enough donations and support to put on this $160,000 event. But we did. This is as much tribute to the town as it is to Debbie Macomber’s immense popularity. It truly has been an amazing thing to see our town come together on so many fronts. Heck, they even repainted the whole downtown! To see our community mentioned in newspapers throughout the country would not have been possible without Debbie. And yet I believe there will be other opportunities and that Port Orchard’s day in the sun, Cedar Cove Days, is not the end but the beginning of even greater things. Our future belongs to the visionaries who not only have the imagination to dream but the dedication to make these dreams come true. Who don’t just talk about change but make it happen. While our lives will be back to normal come September, things will never be the same. And this civic trip will never be forgotten.

Cedar Cove Days’ will conclude with old-time sock hop Legendary Northwest band Junior Cadillac will headline celebration’s keynote event Cedar Cove Chronicle Staff

For many of us, the Sock Hop will be the culmination of Cedar Cove Days — the party, the woop-it-up, the let-down-your-hair opportunity for our guests, sponsors, volunteers, and locals to celebrate in true Northwest fashion. And the featured artist for the event will be Junior Cadillac. Who is Junior Cadillac? They are a fabled Northwest band that has been playing nearly 40 years, belting out the songs and sounds one would expect coming out the fabulous 1960s. They have a horn section, great harmonies, and toe-tapping rhythm that can’t be ignored. They come from the early Pacific Northwest band scene that was like no other and includes the likes of the great

Ray Charles and groups such as Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Kingsmen, The Wailers, The Sonics, Don and the Goodtimes, Merrilee Rush and the Turnabouts — to mention only a few. When we were planning events for Cedar Cove Days, Debbie was the one who said, “We must have a Sock Hop! For those of you who don’t know the origin of the expression, it came from our school days when dances were held in the gym. Because of the basketball floor being sensitive to street shoes, everyone danced in their socks. Eventually the expression came to mean the dance itself. And so be sure and join us Saturday night at 7 p.m. We will indeed be having Debbie’s Sock Hop, officially called the Rock Around the Block Sock Hop.

Longtime Northwest favorite Junior Cadillac will be featured at the sock hop.

Cedar Cove quilt to be auctioned off by Sidney Gallery One-of-a-kind item autographed by Debbie Macomber Cedar Cove Chronicle Staff

The Sidney Museum & Arts Association (SMAA), in connection with the Cedar Cove Days festival, is raffling off a “Cedar Cove Quilt” inspired by Debbie Macomber’s popular book series. The Sidney Gallery is the inspiration for “Harbor Street Art Gallery,” mentioned in several of the New York Times-bestselling Cedar Cove book series where two key characters, Mary Ellen Sherman, Harbor Street Art Gallery manager and Jon Bowman, local northwest artist, meet and form a lifelong relationship. The “Cedar Cove Quilt” was designed by Pam Heinrich with the design approval of Macomber and Harlequin Enterprises, LTD. The quilt depicts the houses on the covers of the Cedar Cove Book Series, and also incorporates the Olympic Mountains and Sinclair Inlet, scenic vistas seen from downtown Port Orchard, aka “Cedar Cove.” The quilt was pieced and quilted by Sinclair Quilters, a group of 16 northwest women who have been quilting together in Port Orchard for more than 23 years.

SMAA Executive Director Jud Turner, Debra Danielson, Pam Heinrich, Virginia Collins, and Sinclair Quilters met at the Sidney Gallery on July 13 for a special presentation to Macomber of Raffle Ticket No. 1, as Macomber autographed the completed quilt, making it a true one-of-kind collector’s item. The Sidney Gallery’s August Gallery Show will feature northwest local artists to include photography, water color, oils, ceramics and fiber art. Raffle manager Virginia Collins, is selling the tickets for $5 each. Tickets are available at the Sidney Art Gallery, which is housed in the town’s original Masonic Hall. During the Cedar Cove Days event the Sidney Gallery will be open extended hours Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are available through Aug. 30, and Macomber will draw the winning ticket at the Cedar Cove Days closing ceremonies at Port Orchard’s Waterfront Park on Aug. 30. The SMAA, a nonprofit organization founded in 1970, is dedicated to preserving local history and fostering the fine arts. The association established and maintains the Sidney Art Gallery, the Sidney Museum, and the Log Cabin Museum. Proceeds from the quilt raffle go to support the association’s mission. The quilt may be viewed at www. sidneymuseumandarts.com

Yes, a throw back to the days of old; in conjunction with Kitsap Classic Cars, Buck’s A & W Drive-In and car clubs from throughout the area, we will be holding a classic car cruise. The route will lead from Buck’s on Mile Hill, down Bethel and then onto Bay Street, finishing at the festival area on the Port Orchard waterfront. Anyone with a classic car can participate by showing up at Rick’s no later than 5 p.m. And while no one knows for sure how many cars will participate, estimates range upwards of 100 cars. This is classic car Wednesday up at Rick’s so this is a Cedar Cove Days extension of this favorite summer pastime. On the waterfront, the cars will park in the festival area as we will play Cruisin’ Music from the Main Stage. Those who have gathered can enjoy the Lion’s Club Burger Bash and Root Beer floats provided by Bucks. The Cruise begins on Wednesday at 6 p.m. If you’re on the road during this time, please give was to this classic car procession that is sure to be a real treat for all who can remember those early days...

SUNDAY

In an effort to introduce our Cedar Cove Days guests to Port Orchard’s businesses, organizers have created the first annual Seagull Walking Tour. Numerous stores and shops throughout the city are participating. When guests check in to pick up their event tickets at the Welcome Center, they will also receive one raffle ticket, along with a list of participating businesses. Ticket holders can explore the town and discover the many opportunities available. They then choose which store and gift they most like, place their entry into the raffle jar at that business, and hope they win! There is one gift awarded by each establishment. Each business will conduct the raffle drawing on Saturday morning, Aug. 29, and will notify the winner by phone. Please be sure to provide the number where you can be reached during Cedar Cove Days on your raffle ticket.

Once there were mermaids ... really Cedar Cove Chronicle’s editor recalls his brush with something strange early in his career By JACK GRIFFIN Cedar Cove Chronicle

It was a time in the great Northwest when there was an abundance of natural resources. Massive forests ran down to the water in most areas with trees hundreds of years old. Local streams produced huge salmon runs and seafood was seemingly inexhaustible. In the mountains, Bigfoot was elusive as always, and nature did a good job of holding her many mysteries close to the vest. It was a simpler time in the 1950’s. We accepted things as they were and enjoyed the beauty and splendor that had been laid before us without questioning the gift nor the giver. We thought things would never change, but one summer it did. I was a reporter for The Chronicle and had been assigned to follow up on a report that two mermaids had beached just west of Lighthouse Point. This seemed inconceivable because the

mermaid colony kept to themselves and no one could ever recall seeing these beautiful creatures up close. In fact, other than the older generation, most of the youth of the day thought the stories about these sea beauties to be folklore. As I approached the point in my car, I noticed a crowd gathered on the shore, so I quickly hurried down to the beach to see what was happening. To my astonishment, two mermaids were prone on the sand, not moving nor showing any signs of life. I was awed to be in the presence of such wonderful creatures, but had a sickening feeling in my stomach at the possibility that they were dying or even dead. Someone had covered them with towels. I wasn’t sure if that was for their modesty or to preserve their skin and scales. I yelled for someone to go find Doc Wilson. He was the town doctor and provided the best care a small town like ours could hope for. In fact, the doctor had been known to even render help to the local farmers when their livestock would turn up sick. The closest veterinarian was a boat ride away in Tacoma. However, that would soon change as the new Narrows Bridge was about to open in the fall. Doc lived just down the road on Kitsap Street and hopefully would get here quick. If anyone could help these poor, hapless creatures, it would be Doc. So we waited. For a moment, I thought I saw some movement in one of the creatures. Several onlookers gasped, but when I leaned in closer, they remained still and I had my doubts as to what I had seen and

“If I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes — and taken a picture — I wouldn’t believe it either. whether they were still alive. Doc Wilson arrived with great fanfare, lead by Sheriff Reilly, his patrol car lights flashing and that noisy siren blaring. This was a big deal around here, and the sheriff was always sure to be right in the middle of any big doings. Doc hurried down to where we were standing and crouched down to examine the mermaids. As the sheriff leaned in I could barely hear what they were saying, but when he stood up, he shouted, “Get a stretcher, they’re alive! The crowd cheered and everyone stepped back as Donnie Whitehall the town ambulance driver came into sight pulling his stretcher and carrying what appeared to be a cot. They immediately loaded the two creatures onto the gurneys and then moved quickly to the awaiting ambulance. In just a few minutes, the mermaids

were whisked off to what I assumed would be Bremerton Hospital. But when I called the hospital later that afternoon, they had no record of any mermaids being admitted and the receptionist actually laughed at me. I took the insult as unintentional and decided to go by Doc Wilson’s. He operated out of his house on Kitsap Street. Doc wasn’t in, but his wife Hazel said something about him going with an ambulance to Seattle and that he would be home late. I never could get a straight answer out of the Doc or Sheriff Reilly for that matter, about what happened to our two mermaids. In fact, I am sure most people would have doubted the events of that day but for one thing. I took a picture.
