Friday, June 30 to Saturday, July 29, 2017
Bones of Contention Eddie Kneebone Bones of Contention is a series of paintings created by the much-loved late artist Eddie Kneebone. He developed these works while undertaking his Master of Education and working as an Artist-in-residence at the Wodonga Institute of TAFE. The series of large format acrylic paintings will be exhibited at Arts Space Wodonga as part of a collaboration between Arts Space Wodonga, Murray Arts and Wodonga TAFE. The series explores the Dreamtime period and the realities and impact of colonisation, specifically pertaining to the North East and Upper Murray Region of Victoria. The works reference specific events throughout colonisation until contemporary day. Kneebone has left the final canvas intentionally blank. “We all have a chance to assess the future and see who we have really become and who we want to be,” Kneebone said, urging us to paint our own depiction of Australia and its people tomorrow. Opening: Eddie Kneebone’s Bones of Contention, 2005, will be officially opened by Scott and Leanda Kneebone, two of Eddie Kneebone’s three children. Friday, August 4 to Saturday, August 26, 2017
Furious Riding: The Kelly Women Narratives Janet Goodchild-Cuffley Furious Riding: The Kelly Women Narratives challenges the usual male-only perspective of the Ned Kelly story. The works in the series place women at the forefront of the narrative. Janet Goodchild-Cuffley’s 26 paintings reference Sidney Nolan’s Ned Kelly series of 1946-1947 in format and shine a particular light on several of his most iconic works. Janet has spent many hours researching details to undertake this project, and can now accurately place these women and their stories into history where they rightfully belong. The paintings in this series are colourful, vibrant and evocative, and tell the Kelly story from a unique and refreshing perspective. Opening: Saturday, August 5, 3pm to 5pm Not just Ned: A performance by Two Friends Productions will consider the adventurous lives of the women around Ned Kelly. Wednesday, August 9, 2017, 11.30am and 6pm. Cost: Students $5 plus one accompanying teacher free. Adults $10. Family of four $25. Soundscapes Abi Thompson Soundscapes explores the idea of another dimension within the traditional landscape. A soundscape can be defined as the unique auditory environment that surrounds a listener and is intimately identifiable with notions of place. A soft breeze through fallen leaves, birdsong, the crunch of footsteps in frost-bitten grass and the murmur of a stream all evoke a time and a particularity of experience. The works in this exhibition see Abi Thompson break away from working with the landscape in a silent and introspective manner. She sees these works as a return to plein air, where she has used multiple media and immersion in the landscape to alert all the senses. Opening: Friday, September 1, 5.30pm Artist talk: With Abi Thompson Saturday, September 2, 10am Wine and Watercolours: Join exhibiting artist Abi Thompson in a workshop focussed on the art of the watercolour. ... like a dog without a bone Nicholas Kleindienst Heidegger’s Dasein is thrown into the world, finding its facticity as the given conditions of that world. That is, a Being finds itself existing in a physical position and the conditions of that position set the Being’s parameters for existence. Authentic existence, according to Heidegger, is when a Being realises its own existence rather than an existence ascribed from outside, by das man, a proverbial They. Taking Aesop’s fable of Themk Tortoise and the Hare as an example of breaking free from the conditions of one’s existence, the exhibition questions the possibilities for living outside of one’s facticity. Opening: Friday, October 6, 5.30pm
