Wodonga’s Gateway Lakes will host the Victorian Dragon Boat Championships this month. The event will see some of Victoria’s best dragon boat paddlers battle it out for both prestige and bragging rights. The state championships also prepares the crews for national racing at the annual Australia Dragon Boat Championships, which this year will be held on the Sunshine Coast.
Three race categories will be held during the championships with up to six dragon boats per event, making a total of 120 paddlers on the water at any one time. First up, there is a 200-metre sprint, which is a fast and furious dash for the line and produces some exciting finishes. Next there is a 500-metre race, which tests the fitness and stamina of paddlers.
Finally, a two-kilometre race with crews racing twice around the lake to the pounding beat of each boat’s drummer. Dragon boat racing has cultural origins in ancient China and has evolved into a highly competitive sport right across the globe. Entry to the Victorian Championships on February 17 and 18 is free, with locals and visitors invited to attend.

AUSTRALIA DAY
FEBRUARY, 2018
Our Australia Day winners
Talented softballer takes out award Wodonga youngster Ben Jones was named as January’s Young Achiever Support (YAS) Scheme recipient.
Uta Wiltshire has been named Wodonga Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day awards in recognition of the dedication and energy she has poured into the local community. Known for her commitment and knowledge of Wodonga, Uta has been a terrific ambassador for the city for many decades. Uta has worn many hats in her life. However, it is her work in the community of which she is most proud of. As well as being an active member of the Wodonga Show Society’s committee, Uta is a member of the Wodonga Council’s Place Names committee and had been involved with Neighbourhood Watch. In 2001, Uta joined the Wodonga Historical Society as its treasurer and
soon took on secretarial duties. Her knowledge and expertise of the history of Wodonga is invaluable. “I see work that needs to be done and I enjoy doing it,” she said. “I have always volunteered, even when my children were in Girl Guides. We moved a lot as a family with my husband in the Army, so now by digging up the history it makes me feel like Wodonga is my town.” Sheridan Williams, Wodonga’s Young Citizen of the Year, has been an advocate for the LGBTQI members in the community. She has been instrumental in getting the Alphabet Crews Youth Group — a social group for LGBTQI kids aged 12 to 17 — up and running again. Sheridan joined the group as she felt it was important to change community attitudes towards LGBTQI people.
The Young Achiever Support Scheme is aimed at assisting young people in their pursuits to participation at a state or national level for activities, events or competitions.
She has participated in Youth Affairs Council of Victoria regional consultations and in local LGBTQI community meetings to provide a youth perspective and voice.
Ben, 14, has been selected to captain the Victorian under 15s softball team at the national championships.
The Border Ovarian Cancer Awareness Group was named Community Organisation of the Year.
He has been playing for the Wodonga Warriors for five years.
The group is dedicated to raising awareness of this cancer, assisting women to recognise the symptoms and supporting those fighting the disease.
During his time with the Warriors, Ben has been selected as best and fairest three times.
The group, made up of many volunteers, including more than 10 committee members, has raised more than $200,000 since their inception in 2012.
He has also represented Softball Albury Wodonga in the under 15s and under 17s.
The group has also set up the Kelsey Watts Memorial Ovarian Cancer Research grant, which will finance ovarian cancer trials for the next three years totalling $108,000.
In 2016-17, he was the association’s under 14s best and fairest. #loveWodonga #wodprojects #cityheart

New immunisation dates
Join in, help keep our city clean Help our environment by joining in Wodonga’s Clean Up Australia Day at Willow Park on Sunday, March 4. Participants can register on the day or sign up via cleanupaustraliaday.org. au.
If you’ve registered and got Clean Up Australia Day branded bags, Wodonga Council will assist by picking up the collected waste.
Wodonga Council has released its monthly immunisation dates. Monthly immunisation clinics, which were held on the fourth Thursday of each month at Stanley Street, have ceased.
Send a text to 0438 698 306 with a cross street location and a truck will collect it.
A new immunisation clinic will be held at Felltimber Community Centre on the fourth Thursday of each month from 4pm to 5pm. For more information or dates, visit our website or call 1800 655 390.
Digging for bardi grubs in reserve not allowed Residents are reminded that digging for bardi grubs is not allowed. After extensive planting of shrubs and grasses in Clyde Cameron Reserve on National Tree Day in 2016, people have been digging for bardi grubs.
Welcome back Mrs Mac Wodonga Library has welcomed back its much-loved librarian and Storytime host Heather McNamara or ‘Mrs Mac’. Mrs Mac returned in January after taking long service leave for six months and enjoyed a sea change. Yvette Hawkins had been
filling in as Storytime host in Mrs Mac’s leave. Sharing the love of reading and books with children, babies and toddlers will once again be on the agenda for Mrs Mac. “I enjoyed my time away but I did miss reading to all the children,” Mrs Mac said.
There’s lots to love On Valentine’s Day, Wodonga Library is calling on everyone who loves books and reading to join in Library Lovers’ Day. Everyone is invited to enjoy all that the library has on offer including access to print and ebooks (fiction and non-fiction), magazines, interactive floor, Storytime, tech sessions, Family History Society and more. A free morning tea will also 6
be held to celebrate from 10.30am to 11am. Various interest groups also meet regularly at the library, including Friends of Wodonga Library, book clubs, Young Writers and the Manga and Anime Club. Visitors who aren’t already members can join if they wish – it’s free. You can also borrow items from any of the 100 ‘Swift’ libraries.
Mrs Mac and Yvette will again lead Storytime this month as the program returns to the library.
•
Wodonga Library will run Storytime each week during the school term for:
•
•
Preschool: Mondays from 10.30am for three to five year olds
Toddler: Wednesdays from 10.30am for 18 months to three year olds Cuddles: Fridays from 10.30am for newborns to 18 months. TO LISTEN TO MRS MAC youtube.com/userstorytime/ anytime
There have also been instances of grubbing in bushland reserves in Wodonga. The grubbing, where people dig up bardi grubs, has damaged some of the plants. The lack of grubs has a potentially negative effect on the environment but it has also ruined the work of volunteers. Many of the plantings were undertaken by Landcare volunteers and students from Wodonga Catholic College. The grubbing has occurred at both the Pearce Street and Huon Creek Road end of the reserve. The damage is believed to have occurred in November and December last year. The plants were wellestablished and were cared for by a small band of volunteers. Bardi grubs are used extensively by fishermen as bait.

COMMUNITY
FEBRUARY, 2018
No idle hands here
Community in action Number of members: 65 Fundraising target: New purpose-built Men’s Shed in Wodonga (stretch target of $230,000) Funding sources: • Victorian Government ($60,000 men’s shed grant) • Wodonga Council ($10,500 from the Community Access and Budget Funding allocation) • Donations and sponsorship from community organisations: $34,000 • Donations from corporate and business sponsors: $43,500 • Internal fundraising: $52,700 In-kind support: Estimated between $140,000 to $180,000
The new Wodonga Men’s Shed in Jamieson Court stands as a reminder of how a community can come together to build a dream. Desperately needing a bigger space as their membership had expanded, Wodonga Men’s Shed members started fundraising in January 2016. Less than two years later, their new shed — nine times bigger than their old home in Emerald Court — is one of the best purpose-built Men’s Shed facilities in North East Victoria. Wodonga Men’s Shed chairman Adrian Adair said their success came down to the in-kind support and donations from the community.
“I don’t think we thought we’d ever be so successful,” Mr Adair said. “Our members held barbecues, sold kindling through APCO and repurposed wheelie walkers selling them for $20 each. “A lot of our internal fundraising came down to the skills we had. “One of our members is a retired landscape gardnerer and he designed and did all the work in our gardens.
Mr Adair said the group applied for government grants but also sought funds from community organisations such as Rotary, Apex, the Old Boys Hostel, Masonic Lodge and many more. Wodonga Men’s Shed is always looking for members. “Blokes when they retire, they sometimes don’t know what to do with themselves,” Mr Adair said.
“For a bunch of 65 blokes, it’s an amazing effort to have so much success.”
“They can come down and get involved with the handson stuff like our bird nesting boxes or sanding and oiling preschool equipment.
Phase one of the project included a target of $230,000 for the build and fitout of the facility.
“If they need to have a chat, there is always someone here who is willing to listento them.”
Does your community group need a funding boost? Could your organisation use up to $3000 to make a difference to the community? Community Impact Grants are now open and allow the community to make a difference by tackling social and health issues. The program aims to empower community organisations and individuals to grow ideas in an innovative and creative way, ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES
as well as looking to improve the city. The grant can tackle issues such as obesity, family violence, mental illness and drug and alcohol-related harm. Community organisations and notfor-profits can apply for up to $3000. SITE Disability Services used their grant last year to build a stronger,
more-inclusive community while Border BMX Club spent their grant on an amazing community event. You can also use a grant to enhance arts and culture or to address environmental sustainability. Individuals auspiced by a community organisation can also apply for grants. The grants help to strengthen
programs and services that meet the community’s needs. They also encourage people to volunteer or participate in their community. Grant applications close at 5pm on Thursday, February 22. FOR MORE INFORMATION wodonga.vic.gov.au/cigp

Create, paint after school Drop in after school to Arts Space Wodonga to Just Paint. Get creative with a variety of painting materials and tools. Just Paint is perfect for kids who love art and want to experiment with a variety of ways to express themselves creatively.
Just Paint is on every Wednesday during the Victorian school terms from 4pm to 5pm except during installation weeks when the gallery is closed. It costs $10 per child per session. Just Paint is for primary and secondary students.
Inherited objects as art Inheritance offers a tactile exploration into personal identity and genealogy. The exhibition comprises sculpture, recycled and reconstructed textiles and ‘inherited’ objects. The crocheted and embroidered organic forms suggest mutating cells –
altering in shape and spilling out of teacups, ornate silver trays, vintage teaspoons and antique pocket watches. The artist also reveals her acknowledgment and acceptance of possessing an inherited gene mutation. Inheritance runs until March 10.

The courtyard and surrounding venues will be brought to life between 5pm and 8pm with entertainment and activities, as well as delicious food and drinks. As well as live music, Wodonga Library will be transformed in the world of Dr Seuss.
Visitors can try their hand at juggling, ‘fishing’ for red and blue fish, or creating their own silly rhymes. The Cube Wodonga will also be hosting Rev Head Slot Cars in the north auditorium where parents and children will be able to compete against one another.
Historic site in your own backyard A huge part of Australia’s history is right in our own backyard — but have you taken the time to visit? From 1947 to 1971, more than 300,000 migrants passed through the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre. Today, it is estimated around 1.5 million people are descendants of former residents from the camp.

The sessions are at 2pm and 6pm.
On your way to the weir during March long weekend, why not stop in and experience the stories nd history of the centre first? Join one of our guided tours, enjoy a self-guided tour or take the suitcase trail. Bring a picnic and play a traditional game. Guided tours are $11 for adults, $9 for children and $25 for a family of four.
