Summer Sutherland and Zoe Deacon have been named as February’s Young Achiever Support Scheme recipients. The scheme assists young people in their pursuits to participation at a state or national level. Summer, 16, has been selected to play in the under 18s women’s hockey national championships in Launceston.
Several playgrounds in Wodonga have also undergone renewal or
received upgrades to the play experiences within them. These parks include Alma Rogers (McGregor Crt) , Jim Matthews (Highland Cr), Bradbury Park (Clover Ave), Dr Bill Grant (Murphy St) and Jack Maher (De Kerilleau Dr). In 2018, Ernest Condon (McFarland Rd), Simon Lane (Baranduda) and Diamond Park (Lincoln Causeway) will undergo renewal or an upgrade to existing equipment.
Zoe, 17, pictured, has been selected to take part in the Hancock Prospecting Australian Trials in Queensland, swimming in four events over three days. The Catholic College Wodonga student is the record holder for the Women’s Open 200m Breaststroke at the Victorian Country Championships. Zoe competed in 10 events and won five gold medals.
It’s time to enrol in preschool Did you know you can enrol your four-year-old in preschool for up to 15 hours a week to give them affordable and educational fun? Preschool is free if you have a HealthCare Card; otherwise there is a small fee but the costs are heavily subsidised.
You can enrol for 2018 or 2019 in one of the six council-run centres across the city — Jamieson Court, Belgrade Ave, Felltimber, Baranduda, Stanley St and Southern Rise. Three-year-olds can be enrolled for up to three hours per week.
Enrolments are due back to the council by July, 2018. To find out more or to enrol your child in one of the council-run preschools, download a form from the council website or phone on (02) 6022 3022. FOR MORE INFORMATION VISIT wodonga.vic.gov.au

MARCH, 2018
Program asks who’s it gonna hurt? Wodonga man Michael Rose is determined to make a change. Mr Rose, 37, will front Wodonga Council’s Who’s it gonna hurt – an Alcohol Culture Change Project – for 12 months. The campaign is aimed at improving the drinking culture among blue collar males aged between 35 to 55 years.
The campaign will document Mr Rose as he reduces his alcohol intake – highlighting both the highs and the lows. The father of three, who would regularly drink between six to 12 stubbies a night, said he had already made changes to his diet.
“I want to be there for my children. I want to feel better,” he said. “Most of us tend to binge drink and if you don’t, you are known as the ‘soft’ one. “I’m going to use (going public) as a way to motivate me.
Community spirit alive and well
“This way I will have all of Wodonga pushing me.” Compared to the rest of Victoria, Wodonga has a much higher incidence of alcohol-related hospitalisation rates, family violence, drink-driving, morbidity and mortality.
Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie has thanked the Border communities for their welcoming efforts for two significant events. Cr Speedie said the council had received much positive feedback and the community turnout was fantastic for the recent Australian Deaf Games and the Queen’s Baton Relay.
The program has been supported by VicHealth and in partnership with Dutch Media.
“On behalf of my fellow councillors, I want to thank each person who went out of their way to learn Auslan for Deaf Games participants or go the extra mile to welcome them,” Cr Speedie said. Games organising committee chair Alex Jones said the community helped deliver the best Australian Deaf Games ever. “The support from the venues exceeded our expectations and every day was met with glowing smiles,” Mr Jones said. “Accessible venues at galleries, libraries and many more has demonstrated that it is not just about “hosting” the Games but creating an all-inclusive city for everyone from all walks of life to visit.”
Auskick boost as drainage works start Drainage works have started at Wodonga Racecourse in time for the Auskick season in April.
Footpaths will also be added to the grounds, linking the car park to the canteen and to the three grounds.
The water will be collected and used to irrigate the racecourse and the Auskick ovals.
The project will add drainage to three ovals at the Brockley St end of racecourse.
Improvements have been made to the oval surfaces to improve the drainage particularly during wet periods.
This first stage of works is part of the council’s 2017-2018 capital program.
Cr Speedie thanked all those who lined the streets or joined the community celebration as the Queen’s Baton came through the city last month. “We had such a great crowd cheering the batonbearers on and it was a fantastic day full of community spirit.” #loveWodonga #wodprojects #cityheart

Council to livestream meetings
JACK HORE WAY
Wodonga Council is seeking feedback on the proposal to rename Bond St to Jack Hore Way. Any enquiries may be directed to Wodonga Council’s GIS co-ordinator on (02) 6022 9300. Closes Monday, March 12 at 5pm.
Wodonga Council will begin livestreaming its monthly council meetings from April this year.
UP THE WALL PROJECT
A motion recommending livestreaming and adopting the associated policy was moved by Cr Kat Bennett at the February meeting. It will take effect with the move to a new ground floor Council Chamber in time for the April 2018 meeting. Cr Bennett said livestreaming would provide another way for the community to see what happened in the council chamber. “Not everyone can make the monthly council meetings and by livestreaming and then having the recordings available online, the community can catch up in their own time and when it suits them,” Cr Bennett said. “We want people to know what is happening in their city, how councillors are voting and what they are saying about the decisions they are making.”

Wodonga Council has received funding through the Victorian Government’s Graffiti Prevention Grants. Professional artists to work with young people to create two large scale art projects. The council is gauging community perceptions around graffiti and street art before and after the project.
Join hills advisory group Following the adoption of the Planning for the Wodonga Hills strategy and associated master plans last year, Wodonga Council is seeking nominations for its new Wodonga Hills Advisory Group. The group will provide advice to the council on aspects of the environmental sustainability and community use of Wodonga’s hills and to guide the implementation of the Wodonga Hills strategy. Four community members will make up the ninemember group with representation also from the CFA, Department of
Water Environment, Land and Planning, Wodonga Urban Landcare Network and the Aboriginal community. Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the consultation for the hills strategy showed the community valued and loved the hills surrounding the city. “In developing the strategy we heard from many different people, from horse riders to walkers, to parents and young people,” she said. “Now we want those people to come forward to help us take the strategy forward, to prioritise what’s
important in the actions set out in the strategy and how we protect, enhance and manage one of our city’s greatest assets.” Interested residents should head to the council’s website to download an application pack. Applications close at 5pm on March 23. The council is also seeking nominations for one of the four resident positions to be a chairperson of the group. Residents requiring further information should contact Chief Executive Officer Patience Harrington by phone on 02 6022 9202.
CBA CAR PARKING PLAN There are 3322 car parking spaces in the central business area. The Wodonga CBA Car Parking Strategy reviews the parking and access in the city centre and how it might be improved. Have your say on the draft strategy before March 21. GATEWAY ISLAND The council is undertaking a review of the Gateway Island Master Plan. Find out more at displays in the library, community centres and council offices or online. A drop-in session will be held on March 7 at the Bluestone Cottage at La Maison Cafe from 2.30pm to 8.30pm. SMOKING LAWS Wodonga Council is seeking feedback to determine the effectiveness of the implementation of the new no smoking laws. The smoking ban was introduced in 2017 and the council wants to determine the effectiveness and attitudes to the laws. GO TO OUR WEBSITE FOR DETAILS AND TO HAVE YOUR SAY: makewodongayours.com.au

IN BRIEF DO YOU USE BPAY VIEW? Wodonga Council is able to issue rate notices via BPay View directly to your personal internet banking portal. Register through your internet banking site.
Register, take care of your animals
With the growing popularity of shipping containers being used for storage, Wodonga Council is reminding residents of the rules and regulations of their use.
If you register before the notices go out then you will receive the notice directly into your internet banking site and will receive a notification either via SMS or email to say it is available for viewing.
A building permit is required to install a shipping container when it is to be used as a building, such as a shed, storage or dwelling.
PENSION CONCESSIONS A rate concession is granted to eligible pensioners who have full entitlements for the rating period. This concession increases according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and is shown as a government concession in the financial area of the rates notice. If you hold a card that grants you full entitlements and have not received a concession for the property that is your sole place of residence, you need to fill in and return the application form for a rates concession. You must return to us in person at the Hovell St office and bring your card to be sighted. Forms are also available at customer focus for completion and processing. Residents will also need to apply for a general local laws permit and Civic Services will determine if the container is suitable on that site. With the annual pet registration renewal date fast approaching, Wodonga residents are being reminded to register their four-legged family members by Tuesday, April 10. Wodonga Council Team Leader Compliance Craig McClanahan said all pets, including both dogs and cats, must be registered by that date or owners risk a $317 fine. “Registration renewal notices will be distributed shortly, giving owners plenty of time to register their pet prior to the due date,” Mr McClanahan said. “It is also a timely reminder to ensure your pet’s

The council urges those owners to do the right thing by their pets by registering by April 10.

VOLUNTEERS
MARCH, 2018
Honouring value of volunteers VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS These awards consist of three components: 1. Recognition of an outstandingly effective volunteer as the Volunteer of the Year; 2. Recognition of individual category winners; 3. Recognition of an outstandingly effective team of volunteers as the Volunteer Team of the Year.
Giving back to the community and helping those in need is what drives Wodonga’s Pam Roth. Pam volunteers her time with the L2P Learner Driver Mentor Program with Junction Support Services, Australian Red Cross patient transport and with the Office of the Public Advocate as a community visitor. Being named as Wodonga’s 2017 Individual Volunteer of the Year was humbling, but Pam is urging residents to nominate a worthwhile volunteer for this year’s awards. “When I won the award, I was totally surprised,” she said.
“I was really honoured to receive the award.
and (when I volunteer) I feel like I’m really helping someone.”
“A lot of volunteers don’t want accolades, but it is nice to be recognised.”
Pam volunteers with L2P, helping young people to get their licence, for about two hours a week. She volunteers with Red Cross for one day each fortnight and with the Office of the Public Advocates when she is needed.
Pam said she believed volunteers were the backbone of the country. “I’ve been a volunteer for about 14 to 15 years,” she said. “Without volunteers, a lot of events and programs couldn’t even go ahead,” she said. “I feel like everybody at some point in their lives needs a little bit of help
“With the L2P program, a lot of the young people wouldn’t get the licences,” she said. “When they get their licences, it opens up the world to them. They have opportunities that they normally wouldn’t get.”
Wodonga Council is now calling for nominees for the 2018 Volunteer of the Year Award. The Volunteer of the Year awards are presented to volunteers for their outstanding contribution to the community in the Wodonga region. Awards are given to recognise excellence in voluntary service and are intended to enhance public awareness and appreciation of the quality and depth of voluntary service in the community. volunteers. It enables us to talk to other organisations, which are also out there seeking volunteers.
In fact, he has 110 of them on his books who regularly contribute to the packaging, distribution and delivery of food at the Wodonga organisation.
“We are always working with other organisations because there is a crossfertilisation or an exchange of volunteers.
There are also a variety of other roles. As part of of the recruitment of volunteers, Albury Wodonga Regional Foodshare attends the Wodonga Volunteers Fair. Mr Matthews said the fair was invaluable to charities in the Border community as it helped to deliver a variety of solutions. “It’s a good event for us.
