The awards provide an opportunity to recognise the great work being done by people in the local community.
Young citizen nominees must be Australian citizens and aged between 16 to 25 years on January 26, 2018.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has reviewed and updated bushfire hazard mapping in the planning scheme. This mapping came into effect from October 3, 2017 and updates the Bushfire Management Overlay applying criteria developed by the Victorian Government, the CFA and CSIRO. Within Wodonga, about 500 properties have been added to the Bushfire Management Overlay while some have been removed and more than
200 within the overlay will be affected by the changes. These landholders were notified by mail during October.
Not-for-profit organisation Aware Industries was named the Wodonga Community Organisation of the Year for its work improving the lives of people with a disability. The awards will be presented at the council’s Australia Day celebrations on Friday, January 26, 2017. Nominations close on Friday, December 1 and should be made on the nomination form at Wodonga.vic.gov.au or by phoning the customer focus team on (02) 6022 9300.

The Planning for the Wodonga Hills Strategy and masterplans were adopted by the council in a 4-2 vote at the last meeting. The final motion passed by the council was to adopt the strategy and master plans, establish an advisory group, formalise agreements with user groups and review the strategy in three years.
Wodonga Mayor Cr Anna Speedie said the documents provided vital direction in managing the environmental values and usage of the hills that ring our city.
“We know, and what we’ve seen throughout this process, is that people are passionate about our hills and we know they value and enjoy what is our biggest community asset have to offer,” Cr Speedie said.
The final amendment is expected to incorporate two documents (the Leneva-Baranduda Precinct Structure Plan and the LenevaBaranduda Development Contributions Plan) into the Wodonga Planning Scheme within the next 12 months. These documents will then guide development in the coming years.
“Our community will continue to have an input and each project will be suitably and appropriately assessed as per the implementation plan in the strategy.” The council regularly meets with key stakeholders and land managers.
Amendment C121 and all associated documents can be viewed online, with hard copies also available for viewing at the council offices, at Wodonga Library, and at Baranduda Community Centre. VIEW AMENDMENT makewodongayours.com.au

Inflatable and aboveground swimming pools are becoming increasingly popular with families as initially, they appear to be an inexpensive alternative for swimming entertainment especially for toddlers and young children. Consumers need to be aware that any pool capable of holding 300mm (30cm) of water requires a building permit and must be designed, constructed, installed and maintained in accordance with building regulations and the Australian Standard (AS 1926.1-2007). Seven toddlers have died because of drowning in the past 12 months. Small paddling pools are often not regarded as dangerous but children can drown in as little as a few centimetres of water.

Don’t leave kids in cars
While adopting a puppy into your family may be fun and exciting, owning a dog comes with a great deal of responsibility.
Leaving children unattended in a car, even for a short period of time, can be fatal. Figures from Ambulance Victoria have revealed November to March was the busiest period with an average of five call outs to a child left unattended in a car per day.
Firstly, you need to choose a dog that is right for you and the costs involved. The Domestic Animals Act 1994 was introduced to promote animal welfare, the responsible ownership of dogs and cats and the protection of the environment. Under the Act, dog owners have a number of responsibilities to abide by, or risk being fined. Dogs aren’t allowed to wander outside your premises, must be
registered each year if they’re over three months and mustn’t cause any nuisance to neighbours.
With hot temperatures looming, it is a timely reminder for parents and carers not to leave children locked in cars.
You must also pick up after their dogs in public, no matter when they do their business – on any roads or streets, nature strips, parks and reserves.
The Victorian Government is working with Kidsafe and Ambulance Victoria to increase awareness of the dangers of leaving children in parked cars.
In 2016 Ambulance Victoria were called to a staggering 1562 callouts for kids left in cars, with: •
toddlers making up eight out of 10 kids left in cars
•
one out of five kids requiring medical treatment, including 15 who were taken to hospital.
Despite heat warnings and significant penalties, an average of four kids a day are being put at risk. In the worst of these cases, firefighters rescued children from a locked car before they were treated by paramedics. CITYLIFE
