WINTER, 2019

Off and running in new role MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Add your community events to app

It is a great honour and privilege to be able to introduce myself as your new Wodonga Council CEO.

Community organisations and sporting groups can now promote their events through the WotsOn Wodonga app.

I have had a busy first few weeks as I get to know our councillors, council staff team, community and industry partners and our state departmental officers and Ministers.

The latest update allows all submissions to be reviewed and approved by council staff before being added to the new What’s On or the new Sport and Leisure section. Clubs + Groups: People can search and find out about local sporting and leisure clubs/groups.

The Mayor, councillors and all staff have made me feel very welcome and it is obvious that I have joined a very loyal and committed team, which is absolutely focused on delivering great community services and transformational change for our city. I was fortunate to join a number of community members on the “Bulrushes to Boom town” bus tour with our expert tour guide, Mayor Speedie this week. Despite living and working in our community the tour is a real eye opener, a great opportunity to reflect on the growth of our city and the many changes that are occurring on a monthly basis – from the residential growth in Baranduda, the Baranduda Fields project, the growth of Logic as a regional logistics

making within our Two Cities One Community partnership with our Albury counterparts.

We have also delivered our budget for 2019-2020, which is open for public consultation.

Our most significant capital project will be the delivery of a new library and arts centre - this building is far more than just a library, it is a key community hub and meeting place, for people of all ages, and the new design will help transform the southern end of High St for many years to come.

This fabulous initiative has paved the way for the first ever cross-border city deal in Australia – these deals are where federal, state and local governments all work together to agree and deliver transformational projects for our community.

This budget is great news for our city, it sees us demonstrating fiscal responsibility in keeping rates low and no new borrowing, while continuing to invest in key capital works projects totalling $15 million with an additional

The pair worked on the mural alongside a large group of young indigenous people as part of the Stronger Communities Program.

“I left the design up to the kids, they have been painting their hands and pressing them onto the mural to leave their own mark,” Ms Murray said.

WHAT IS IT? The Baranduda Moonshot (TBM) is an interactive durational solo performance by Baranduda resident and artist Lyn Wallis, recreating the Apollo 11 mission and moon landing in ‘real time’. TBM will use 3D printing technology/art, object theatre, and various digital platforms, to investigate the historic legacy and personal impact of inspirational events and childhood play. TBM is essentially a re-enactment of the Apollo 11 moon mission (launch to landing) in my Baranduda backyard. Like Apollo 11, TBM is a broadcast event. It will use Facebook and its Facebook live function as a platform to share prerecorded and live content with its audience. The broadcast event/s will take place over four days (July 16 to 20, 2019), beginning with mission launch and culminating in a historic walk on the moon. Throughout the making of TBM, I will be assisted by a film/ video specialist, a local puppeteer, and as many friends as I can wrangle into my backyard. I won’t be alone on my journey to the moon: my dog Pablo will be coming with me. HOW WILL I MAKE IT? In 2019 we consider the proliferation of screen-based experience as a modern phenomena, and yet way back in 1969 the world primarily engaged with the first moon landing via screens. TBM will use only free/low cost social media and broadcast platforms and applications to reach its audience: only the mission launch on July 16 will have a live audience in-situ. Key mission moments will be recorded using smartphones and applications such as Astronaut Voice, 8MM and VHS. All of the collateral and content will be managed through free and/or user-friendly platforms such as Canva, GarageBand and iMovie. Locations will be dressed with found objects (cardboard signs, doorknobs, instruments and cellophane) to celebrate childhood play. The overarching idea is that anyone should be able to bring their imagination and pocket technology together to create magic. The mission will be launched on Tuesday, July 16, 6pm at Baranduda Community Centre. For more information visit facebook.com/thebarandudamoonshot/

IN BRIEF OVERDUE RATES

Nature issues in focus BUILDING A SHED OR GARAGE?

As the fourth instalment of the 2018-2019 rates and charges was payable by May 31, 2019, final notices will be issued for certain properties. Properties that have instalments outstanding may be referred to council’s commercial collection agency next month for legal proceedings if payment is not made or an acceptable payment arrangement put in place. The costs of any legal action can be considerable and remain as a charge against the property until paid.

Homeowners planning to construct a shed or garage, need to be aware of and comply with the following. If you are building a shed or garage with a floor area of 10m2 or greater, you will require a building permit. If the building works (including supply, installation and labour costs) are more than $10,000 and you are not building it yourself, you must use a registered builder and if the works are valued at more than $16,000, the builder is required to provide builder’s warranty insurance.

PENSION CONCESSIONS A rate concession is granted to eligible pensioners who have full entitlements for the rating period. ALIVE WITH POSSIBILITIES

A Regional Natural Environment Strategy (RNES) is being developed by the cities of Albury and Wodonga. Underpinned by a review of existing knowledge and advised by community and local expert input, this strategy will provide a cross-border regional vision for the protection, management and enhancement of the natural environment. The final strategy aims to recognise and protect the local environment and the things the community values most about it.

The plan will influence how each council manages land — like parks and reserves — and how each council uses policy and planning controls to protect the environment and how we work with the community to address the issues they care about. The first stage of consultation includes a series of background discussion papers identifying threat, assets and opportunities. The council now want to hear from the communty about the natural areas and local issues they care most about.

A series of facilitiated workshops and community drop-in sessions will provide opportunities for the community to find out more and have their say. Or use one of our online tools via the link below.

Author opens up on being a mum

Writer and sometimes dinosaur wrestler

Motherhood. It’s not always a bed of roses as Megan Blandford quickly discovered after the birth of her first born a decade ago.

Join us at Wodonga Library in August for an author talk with one of Australia’s most beloved authors – Jackie French AM.

The Beechworth mum and freelance writer has come out of the thorny bushes to give her account, warts and all, in a book detailing her own struggle with post-natal depression.

Jackie is a writer, dinosaur wrestler and wombat tamer from the Araluen Valley NSW. Her books have won national and international awards and sold millions of copies.

Megan will host a free author talk at Wodonga Library from 11am on Friday, June 21, talking candidly about moving from the corporate world into writing.

Others were eaten by the wombats. She is an historian, ecologist, dyslexic and a passionate worker for literacy, the right of all children to be able to read. She was Australian Children’s laureate for 2014 and 2015, and Senior Australian of the Year 2015. Her books for young people include Diary of a Wombat and Hitler’s Daughter, with the young adult/adult crossover Matilda Saga and the Miss Lily series and Let the Land Speak for adults. An adult author talk will be held on August 21 at 6pm. Tickets: $20, The Cube members $18.50.

Megan admitted it was “pretty amazing” to see her book, I’m Fine (and other lies), published.

“It’s been a life dream of mine so to hold that book in my hands was a huge moment and an intense feeling, especially when it’s your own personal story,” she said. “It’s not the story I set out to tell, but my personal account was the story that needed to be told.” Megan says you have to laugh at yourself sometimes and that’s

why she included some of her funny struggles. “My first baby cried a lot and I recall just putting her to sleep on this particular day and she had been screaming for ages before I got her to give in for a nap and about the minute she closed her eyes, a dog barked and woke her up. “It was the neighbour’s dog who had got into our backyard and I ended up wrapping my baby in a blanket and storming over there. “It was one of those things that at the time it seemed rational but in hindsight you have to laugh and I thought it was important to capture these moments in the book.” Her book can be found at Dymocks in Albury, Beechworth Books, at booktopia.com.au and Wild Dingo Press.
