LETTER FROM THE EDITORS Welcome to our July issue of The Woking Journal! This month: we bring you our Out & About section, packed full of summer events, from family fun in the sun at Wisley to workshops at The Lightbox. Our fabulous columnist Emma C Williams asks whether modern living can ever quell our desire for a little peace and quiet on page 8. As ever, we’ve got a scrumptious recipe and our fun Puzzle Page to keep you entertained. Plus: check out our monthly News Edit of all the local goings on. We’ve had a pretty exciting month ourselves, both receiving offers of fulltime employment in journalism in the last couple of weeks. With that in mind, we’re looking to recruit an Editor for our beloved magazine. The Woking Journal has gone from strength to strength since its launch last December, and has become a treasured part of the local community. Turn to page 12 to see if you could be the perfect person to take on a thriving project… Many thanks as ever to our lovely local advertisers.

the
S O U N D “MY PERSONAL HOBBIES,” said the poet Edith Sitwell, “are reading, listening to music, and silence.” Last month, a younger colleague mentioned to me that she “couldn’t concentrate” in silence, a viewpoint that I’ve heard many times from my students. So I found myself wondering when it was that silence became undesirable. Where we live, silence is rare. As I write, there are building works going on next door, the washing machine is screaming and my husband is drilling outside. These are background commotions, the necessary sounds of suburban life, and they rarely distract us unless we choose to let them. Yet I couldn’t be writing this column if the television were on, or the radio; I even struggle with background music. Of course, it depends what I’m doing. Even I don’t need my full powers of concentration in order to fiddle about with a PowerPoint presentation. If I have some reasonably mindless editing tasks to complete, I’ll stick on an episode of Dexter to pass the time. Okay, I’ll admit, it distracts me at times; but not to the extent that I cannot
8
complete the task. Likewise with cooking, an undertaking which I find can be hugely enriched by shouting at contributors on the latest airing of The Big Questions. But reading and writing at length are different altogether, and they require my full attention. I can’t read and listen to music. I can’t write and watch television. The young people that I teach will no doubt see this as a failing on my part, or at the very least as a sign of my age; but I question their insistence that mental multi-tasking is truly possible, and the latest educational research suggests that I’m right. Building works, household appliances and handy husbands aside, I feel lucky to live in a village where at times the loudest noise is birdsong. Yet even I can find silence uncomfortable at times. If I can’t sleep at night, it’s always what’s inside my head rather than outside it that’s the problem, so I’ll plug in my headphones and blot out my thoughts with noise. Silence can be deafening when you’re not accustomed to it, and in our increasingly hectic world I sometimes fear that we are all losing our capacity to be at peace.

The
WOKING Journa l Do you have what it takes to edit a local magazine? We are looking for a bright individual, couple or small team to take over the day-to-day running of The Woking Journal. It’s a project we started with the simple aim of delivering local news and promoting independent local businesses to the Woking community, and we’ve been so excited at how the publication has flourished. Yet due to exciting new work commitments we are unable to devote as much energy as we would like to the magazine. Over the past eight months, the publication has really established itself in the community, and we know it would make a wonderful part-time project for a an artistic soul looking to explore their creativity. What skills do you need? Computer literacy Some basic design skills, preferably InDesign An interest in writing and pursuing local journalism A creative outlook and a keen eye for detail An interest in business We already have an advertising team on board, so we are looking for individuals to pursue the editorial and design aspects of the business only! This is a fantastic way to gain experience, and take a thriving local business to the next level, all from the comfort of your own home. Please don’t hesitate to contact us on 07800 658215 / enquiries@wokingjournal.co.uk for a chat! We’d love to hear from you. Sophie & Nile
