Delicious Words by SOPHIE THROWER

I

PARTIES

t’s a chilly February evening and there’s excitement in Notting Hill. Amidst the trendy shops and colourful characters, 207 Portobello Road is humming with anticipation. As the doors are thrown open to the lucky diners savvy enough to reserve a table at the 27 Organic dinner club, warmth and laughter spill freely into the street. Inside, a cosy eatery beckons, where an assortment of lace cloths adorn tabletops, candlelight flickers and unobtrusive music plays gently in the background. And there’s an atmosphere of intimacy that’s instantly relaxing; it’s like being invited to dinner with your favourite Italian family. Everyone’s friendly, and not in the saccharine or hurried way that ruins so many dining experiences. Each member of the handpicked team is unflinchingly passionate about the produce; they are refreshingly well-informed about the menu, which is concise and perfect. Anyone can be taught how to pour wine or set a table, but it’s much harder to create the things that can’t be bought – that ‘certain magic’ that defines the most memorable of culinary experiences. Louise Wilkinson is the creative mind behind the catering company Delicious Parties, whose exceptionally talented and passionate chefs create exquisite food, taking the starring role at the most special of special events – from birthday 6

WE CATCH UP WITH LOUISE WILKINSON AT HER MONTHLY LONDON DINNER CLUB, 27 ORGANIC brunches to corporate lunches – and on the 27th day of each month, she teams up with the delightful Portobello Organic Kitchen and Carlo Kamchis to give you 27 Organic. The idea for Delicious Parties – first conceived “over a piece of mimolette cheese” and a glass of Sangiovese wine – is the culmination of Louise’s impressive career in catering which spans her entire adult life. From waitressing during her university years to working in an American-style burger restaurant in Switzerland, the ethics of exceptional hospitality became firmly cemented in her business plan of creating tailor-made, client-focused experiences.

FEATURE

“tailor-made, client-focused experiences” She loves “being with people and meeting their needs, offering exceptional service and going out of the way to provide guests with an amazing experience.” Louise uses her expertise as a platform to accommodate each wish, creating bespoke “menus and events that are totally tailored for you.” This flexibility continues right through to the budget, as everything from highend charity functions to intimate wedding parties are catered for, with the team doing their absolute best to realise the client’s ideal, right down to the smallest detail. In partnership with friend Carlo Kamchis and The Portobello Organic Kitchen the inspiration for 27 Organic comes from a simple belief in organic ingredients and affordability. With that in mind, Louise is working alongside Carlo, who’s channelled his Greek roots and a love of small and friendly neighbourhood restaurants, to deliver an unforgettable culinary experience in the fantastic restaurant ‘Portobello Organic Kitchen’. Every plate is lovingly homemade by head chef Dan Whitehouse, reassuringly healthy and abundantly flavourful thanks to the venture’s organic roots. As with all great food, it’s all about the quality of the ingredients, which sit cosily next to each other in beautifully thought-out dishes. On the night, Delicious Parties’ canapés featured sumptuous mini pea tarts and mushroom arancino, followed by starters of smoked mackerel salad with celeriac fennel coleslaw and piccalilli, or goat’s cheese fritter with beetroot two ways, to name but a few.

Roasted chicken breast sat alongside a potato, artichoke and rosemary gratin, steamed kale and truffle oil, facing stiff competition from four cheese potato gnocchi, and a fillet of organic salmon with quinoa, lemon, peppers, fresh parsley and extra virgin olive oil. We basked in the chatter and laughter of fellow customers, utterly replete and satisfied, leaving only when our eyelids started to droop. Two weeks later, we were still talking ardently about the food. Creating unforgettable experiences is clearly Louise’s life’s passion. Her future plans include summer cookery classes for kids to raise good awareness amongst primary school children, and a luxury lunch service allowing offices or private clients to build their own American-style brown paper bag lunch, with a variety of hedonic and healthy options. But her biggest motivation? Simple. “It sounds so cheesy, but seeing people happy when they eat our food.” The best bit? Delicious Parties are branching out from their London roots to cater events in Surrey too, making them the perfect choice for your local function. Working with a company for whom the glory of a beautiful experience is in the details, ensures a uniquely tailor-made event, fantastic service and exceptional food. And if you’re free on the 27th of an upcoming month, then get yourself to one of her sublime 27 Organic dinner clubs. We promise, it’ll be an evening you’ll never forget. COMMENT

BOSSY

T

he recent ‘Ban Bossy’ campaign has set tongues wagging around the world. With backing from famous faces such as Jennifer Garner, Marlo Thomas and Beyoncé, it’s a heavyweight campaign with plenty of celebrity endorsement. But behind the clever slogans and earnest faces, it questions the sexist treatment of girls and women who deign to be dominant.

© Alejandro Escamilla

Its analysis has shown that girls are twice as likely as boys to be worried about expressing leadership qualities, are called upon less in class, and between primary and secondary schools, girls’ self esteem plummets by three and half times as much as boys. Supposedly by banning the word ‘bossy’, the gender divide will be narrowed, and girls will miraculously be encouraged to evolve into the articulate female leaders of our future. American psychologist Alicia Clark noted that, “Girls experience fears and inhibitions about social acceptance more acutely,” and this is really at the crux of the issue. From experience, boys and men have a resilience to criticism that I’ve always admired. Does it ever border on arrogance? Sure, but it’s nonetheless enviable to witness someone put forward an opinion irrespective of company or criticism. There’s a reason all-girls schools are notoriously bitchy, which is simply that women are often afraid to deliver a verdict head-on, often opting to gossip or gripe in private rather than risk being dubbed ‘confrontational’. 10

boots It’s indubitable that the word ‘bossy’ is unfairly stigmatised. But in reality, the English language is full of a gendered vocabulary. Competing terms such as ‘bachelor’ and ‘spinster’ epitomise our long-standing difference in attitudes towards men and women. How about ‘cougar’, ‘gold-digger’ and ‘cradle-snatcher’ to boot? All of these will continue to run unopposed by their male equivalents, because it’s simply the linguistic reflection of an engendered society. Ultimately, it’s dangerous to make one juvenile word the scapegoat. Today, a male graduate can expect to earn 20% more than a female graduate, an average woman working full-time from 18 to 59 could lose £361,000 in gross earnings over her working life compared to an equivalent male, and just 17.3% of FTSE 100 directorships are held by women. But it’s a bit sensationalist to expect one fiveletter word to change all this. It’ll only be replaced by ‘nag’, ‘fiery’, ‘feisty’, or the most repulsive of all, ‘hormonal’. Like these, ‘bossy’ is simply a term tacked onto a woman who has the chutzpah to stand up for herself; a woman who gives direction and stands proudly alongside her ideas. So what? We should be proud to speak our minds, not busying ourselves with the eradication of one childish word while men steam even further ahead. Be bossy, be feisty, be assertive, just don’t waste time on the semantics.

COMMENT

Our editors go head-to-head in tackling the ins and outs of the “bossy” debate

I

n the end, it all comes back to our mothers. Or so some might say. Tales of terrified, world-wearied cuckolds cowed into submission by their shrewish wives make great material for armchair Freudians, who see authoritative women as the root cause in all their problems – the original sin in the story. Powerful women in our cultural imagination are hormonal and neurotic nags, foul-tempered and irrational – they represent the villains in an unrecognisable world in which women rule the roost. It’s no great leap to imagine a Rebekah Brooks in the place of a Lady Macbeth. It’s a brave woman who wants to rock the boat and take the reins. Plenty of women would be happy to dedicate their existences to 9-5 lives of cooking, cleaning and child rearing – but then so would many men. The problem lies with people of both sexes fitting too easily into the parts prescribed for them. There is a premium on “being manly” which is very different to the injunction on girls to be “ladylike”. In acting like a man, boys dedicate their formative years to walking and sitting like men. To do otherwise would be social suicide. A ten-year-old boy who hits like a girl is – at the very least – grounds for concern. And he must never, ever throw like a girl.

boss·y - (bô’sē, bŏs’ē). adj. boss·i·er, boss·i·est. Given to ordering others around; domineering. boss’i·ly adv. boss’i·ness Traditional gender roles dictate that it’s the men who are thrown in at the deep end. Some rise to the challenges of the position handed down to them from the day they receive their first Lego set and football; while their sisters play with dolls and bake cupcakes, reluctantly, yearning for train sets and toy tractors. But is it not all just playacting? Did we really come into the world with identities as fully formed as we like to believe? Or are we destined to perform the parts that we recognise from books and TV? Or from our own parents? Which brings us back to mum. And dad. I suppose it comes down to who wears the trousers. They are our biggest role models after all. And if you believe that behind every great man there’s a great woman, then in life, both have largely equal parts to play – one awkwardly-fitting leg for each, if you will. And, ultimately the key is finding a pair that fits both people. Some will always want to drive the car. Others prefer the passenger seat. But there’s immense power in being the map holder. Because it’s the person with the map who dictates what the driver does with their feet and hands. We imagine a world in which everyone can choose their part. But it’s really not up to us. We can, however, choose our terminology.

FORWARD THINKING Staying in control of your finances is all about planning, writes Penny Cook While some of us like to keep our options open and only ever plan as far as the next weekend in our lives, unfortunately with tax that approach doesn’t work. Penny Cook is a Chartered Tax Adviser who specialises in providing tax advice to individuals and businesses and has being doing so for over 30 years. ‘When it comes to tax planning, thinking ahead and getting all the right tools in place is essential,’ she explains. ‘Tax changes constantly so it is important to get up to date advice to minimise exposure to tax.’ There are some changes we already know will take effect on 6 April 2014 and Penny explains a few of these. The government recently announced that the Inheritance Tax threshold- the nil rate band for inheritance tax - is to be frozen at £325,000 for individuals and £650,000 for couples until at least 2019. The value of the estate over the nil rate band is taxed at 40%. 'House prices means this is a particular issue in the south east, but careful planning can substantially reduced exposure to IHT' added Penny. Main residence relief - For a long time the last 36 months of the period the property was owned has been treated by 14

Penny Cook is director of Aurora Tax Services Ltd in Woking

law as ‘deemed occupation’. For example if you were only absent from the property for the last 36 months of ownership before selling it, there should normally be no capital gains tax to pay. From 6 April 2014 this period of ‘deemed occupation’ will be reduced to 18 months. Personal pension contributions - To qualify for income tax relief, investments in personal pensions are limited to the greater of £3,600/UK relevant earnings, but also to the annual allowance. This allowance (£50,000) reduces to £40,000 from April 2014. There is also the opportunity to use unused relief from the previous three years. At Aurora Tax Services Ltd we aim to work with you to minimise your tax liabilities and maximise your wealth. For a free no obligation initial discussion please contact Penny Cook on 01932 352310 or email penny@aurorataxservices.co.uk.

Smoked salmon herb scones with horseradish cream, caviar & dill JACQUELINE WISE

Hooray! Spring has finally sprung! Soon it will be time for garden parties and BBQs; why not get your guest’s taste buds tingling with this simple canapé recipe? This month I am sharing one of my most popular menu choices, perfect for parties whatever the weather may hold…

1 Preheat oven to 220 degrees. Sift flour, salt and

baking powder, add herbs and butter and either rub together or blitz in food processor until fine breadcrumb texture.

2 Add milk gradually, using a palate knife to stir and cut across and under mixture until soft dough forms, knead gently so it holds together.

3 Use a 3-4cm circle cutter (or shot glass if you

don’t have one!) to cut rounds, place on greased baking sheet and bake for 5-7 minutes until risen and golden. Cool and cut in half.

4 Cut and fold salmon into squares, place on top of scone halves.

5 Whisk double cream into soft peaks, add pinch

of salt and horseradish, squeeze on to salmon using piping bag or just spoon on.

6 Add caviar on one side of cream and a sprig of dill to garnish.

INGREDIENTS
